I couldn't play this for more than an hour before I had to beg blockbuster to take it back, pretending it was damaged. It's so monotonous.

This one is... Interesting! The unusual controls are something that can be adapted too with enough time, even if I feel this is an over-emphasis on this motion controls. Making me backtrack to continue in a stage where moving backwards is a trial, and the camera doesn't turn around so I'm constantly running into things I couldn't have possibly seen coming. 2. Trapping me in tiny rooms where I must homing attack annoying enemies to leave, and all Sonic wants to do is run into the wall, if Sonic controlled more like the usual 3D Sonic game with a bit of motion control here and there, than this game would be much more fun, but as it can get extremely frustrating in the later levels, I won't be coming back in a hurry. Great Visuals and Soundtrack though. Expand

This is and wonky game too control but I had fun with it, story's ok, soundtracks ok, bosses are ok, the gane is just ok, it's strangely overrated, whereas black knight gets much more negativity when that game improved just about everything this game did, yet that one gets **** on, makes no sense!

This is the most mediocre Sonic game I've ever played. On one hand, the controls suck, the mission structure is awful, the upgrade structure shouldn't have existed just to make the controls better, and you hear the main theme EVERYWHERE! The gameplay is OK, but there's a problem that the story doesn't show "the real sonic adventure" for the Sonic fans.

Wow - I purchased this game because the box says its multiplayer. Guess I should have read the reviews. Chopping logs just doesnt cut it my friends. Now, to be fair, we just picked up the game and my son has only been playing it for maybe an hour, but the endless and relentless - try jumming this time, try short jumps now, try walking backwards, now try bashing these guys.. ohh you missed one - you failed - redo the whole course...each seperated with 5 menus and totally annoying music ohhh man just burns me! We cant advance until we finish this Lost Prologue training thing which has you practicing moves in a vortex wormhole thing.. jeeze I thought we were past this kind of thing - just throw us into a real level already!??? We will figure it out! Wasnt that one of the cool things about sonic? Just throw you into a situation - up to you to figure it out. Much more interesting than having a jumping/bashing course shoved down your throat - we'll learn as we go people. Also how can people rate this game so highly with all the flaws? This game is not as catastrophic as Sonic '06 or Sonic and the Black knight, so that's a good start. Overall the game is between a good and okay game. Why? BECAUSE THE CONTROLS ARE ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!!!!
Sega wanted to make a new Sonic title for the Wii with good motion controls, but how did they screw up there? Well neglecting the Nunchuk of course!

History is really no big deal. Not terrible, but more bad than good. Gameplay is bad compared to other good Sonic games. It's quite repetitive and boring. If the game had cutscenes, it would be a little bit more involving, but no, they decided to make it with pictures, and that sucks. Resuming: The game has a bad history, it's quite repetitive and not involving.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When nintendo anouced the wii, SEGA made one of the most underrated sonic games ever, Sonic And the secret rings. I really enjoyed this game In fact I read a bunch of reviews before buying it and saw some people comparing it to sonic 06, REALLY? anyway, let's get to the game, first off the story, this game is not your average sonic game instead of being in the regular sonic universe sonic is in an Arabian knights based setting, this game started what was known as the sonic storybook series which were two storybook based games on the wii. All of the characters like tails, knuckles, eggman, etc, are Arabian knights lookalikes and are referred to as names of characters from the legendary story. this is a sonic game where eggman is not the villain, the villian is an evil genie named Erazer who wants to erase the Arabian knights world forever. I really like this story and think that it's a great spinoff for the sonic series, this game is about as simular to sonic games, as super mario sunshine is to mario games, it's a completely new environment and the only thing remaining from the series are rings, that's it. Now moving on to the gamplay, This game uses the wii remote sideways and you tilt the wii remote left and right to steer sonic, it's like playing a racing game on the wii with just the wii remote. you jump by pressing the 2 button, and do a homing attack by thrusting the wii remote forward. yes I admit that these are not the best controls in any sonic game ever, but they are at least decent and fully playable. This game has some of the best level design in a sonic game, levels like sand oasis, and levitated ruin are all great, the graphics are some of the best on the wii and this was the best looking game on the wii at the time of it's release. and the music is great, I love seven rings in hand It's one of my favorite songs in a sonic game. now here's some things that I don't like in the game, sometimes it can get really frustrating, I mean one mission in pirate storm took me over 3 days to complete with about 80 attempts, And I really did not like that mission at all. and you don't just play stages like in the other sonic games, there are about 10 missions and you have to complete about 7 of them before you can unlock the next world, The first mission is run to the goal like a basic sonic stage, but after that, their will be some frustrating and horrible missions where you have to make it to the goal without defeating any enemies, or don't break any jars, or defeat a set number of enemies. And then there are the bosses which are okay, they're basic bosses in 3d sonic games, you just hit the weak spot a couple of times then you're done. and then there's party mode, it's basically a Mario party game but with sonic characters in it, it's like sonic shuffle all over again, only this time it was fun, yes it's not as good as the mario party series, but it's very close. Sonic and the secret rings is one of my favorite sonic games, and one of the most underrated sonic games ever, just because it came after sonic 06 doesn't mean that it's anything like sonic 06. I highly recommend this to all sonic fans. Expand

I've played all of the sonic games and I say this game deserves to be in the dark age of sonic. I'm giving a deserving rating trhat this game isn't a bad sonic game. but its hell not a good one, If i rank sonic the hedgehog 06 at a 1 and sonic adventure 2 or battle a 10 this deserves a 5 its the inbetween of a bad game and an ok game. its a solid entry but not good enough to spark my interest

Well, this game is good, not great, but good. We've got a very long campaign, with a good story, the presentation is sweet, and the gameplay worked very well. But of course, every good thing MUST have it's haters, for the sake of hating. Ugh.

Similar to many of other 2005 to '09 Sonic games in that it has one of the series' best stories. It strays from the usual gameplay and gives us use of the Wii's motion controls, which are kind of janky, hence the 9.
However, the story, the cutscenes, the graphics, the amazingly fun multiplayer party mode, and enjoyable single-player campaign make this an extremely solid Sonic experience.

The multiplayer mode surprised me at first and is sure to keep your family and friends entertained. As far as the levels and bosses go, there is a great variety but whereas some are challenging and fun, others contain time-wasting missions and horrible objectives. I've played almost all the sonic games, and I have to say this is probably the worst. It's the controls that kill it. Sounds good in theory, but unfortunately it's like steering an old car with broken steering and no reverse gear.I've played almost all the sonic games, and I have to say this is probably the worst. Controls aren't nearly responsive enough, and the hit-and-miss homing attack will have you tearing your hair out in frustration and you fall to your death time after time. For the life of my I can't understand why the devs didn't allow alternative control schemes, such as the classic control or even steering sonic with the nun-chuck. Mario Kart does this, Sonic and the secret rings doesn't. Some good ideas here but at the end of the day the controls are virtually a game-breaker. Expand

While Sonic and the secret rings looks nice on the wii, It's hard to get past the ridiculousness of the strict tutorial that proceeds to make you relearn every game mechanic the has been created in the last 20 years. Combined that with a cumbersome menu system in the tutorial which instead of just automatically bumping you to the next lesson made you troll back and forward through unnecessary obstacles just to reach your next boring objective.

Secret Rings could have been something somewhat decent if it wasn't for pure interface design choices that just drains any enjoyment to be had.

I've had my share of bad Sonic games: Sonic 06, Shadow the Hedgehog, even Sonic Heroes wasn't that good to me. But none of them come as close as this abomination of a Sonic game. The plot for the game is very far out there: I've seen pretty crazy concepts for plots before, but nothing like Sonic going into a story book to save the Arabian Nights. The new characters in here are just as bad. Shahra is very poorly developed, and Erazor is one of the worst villains I've ever seen in a video game. the gameplay doesn't help either. It gets very repetitive when all Sonic can do is go constantly forward, and go left and right in a straight pattern, and the control use of turning the wiimote forward and sideways to move around feels extremely unnatural. The graphics, even for an early wii game, aren't that great at all. the characters look like plastic, and the environments look very bland. Another thing I absolutely hate is party mode. the party mode in this game tries so hard to be a Mario party clone, and it fails terribly at that. Even with all these things, however, there is one thing I can say is fairly decent about the game: the soundtrack. Most Sonic games have soundtracks ranging from good to amazing, and this one is no exception. I don't really like the main theme of the game, but everything else about the game is pretty catchy. But even with a good soundtrack, Sonic and the Secret Rings manages to fail terribly on story, gameplay, and control. this is by far the worst Sonic game I've ever played, and I highly recommend staying away from it. The StoryBook team seemed to take a radically different approach here; choosing to use corporate history rather than mascot history in it's development. The On-rails arcade action was in my eyes a vast improvement for the sonic series considering many of the 3D games coming before it. The Added RPG element however was a bit of a hindrance, although finally achieving that sonic speed is an effort well earned while playing through the game. Another plus in it's lineup were the visuals in which for the time, were stellar from a 3rd party company. The cut-scenes although not CGI, added to the story element of the game, which for me was for all the better. The one MAJOR roadblock in the game for many players was the bi-polar difficulty encountered progressively through the game. If your looking for a better than average sonic game, with a bit of challenge, this is your game. Expand

Now to the real reason why I gave this a 1/10: The control is TERRIBLE. Sure, I didn't mind it in Mario Kart Wii, but it's so awkward here, jumping included. You have to press B to stop and charge the jump. You STOP to charge a jump. This is Sonic the Hedgehog. But then I found out that you have to do missions to progress, which is just the same stages, with a different objective.

Also, there's a party mode that I don't care for.

When you start out Sonic plays horrible. The learning curve for the controls is hard and even when you get good at it, you will often be thwarted by the developers stupidity. For instance, you will be racing. Then suddenly Sonic is locked into a room and forced to fight enemies which he has already passed by. Does sonic turn around and race back to deal with them...no, instead sonic has to backstep alllllll the way back (without a camera change so you can see what he's backstepping towards mind you) Provided that your lucky and don't back up into an enemy with a sword, then you can kill your enemies and proceed. This is probably the one major flaw of the game - you will find in some places the developers didn't either polish the camera angles up or make the controls actually intuitive. I felt writing a letter to the developers cause sometimes I was so angered by what an AMAZING game they could have had. Instead they get an often enjoyable one that is more than occasionally frustrating. This game reeks of "omg, we're spending too much money on this game. Lets just finish it up for deadline and see if we get enough money to make a better sequel" - that said, if there is a predecessor (where they actually polish it up and take some pride in thier product) then I am SO going to buy that game. -Everything is on rails
-Sonic is intentionally handicapped in order to push the RPG mechanics. You need to "level up" for Sonic to actually play well.
-The final boss is insanely unfair and poorly designed.
-The mission structure makes most missions unfun due to the separated structure of the levels and makes it nearly impossible to know what missions to do next in order to progress unless you use a guide.
-The mario party esque side mode is completely pointless and adds nothing to the experience. Also has terrible controls.

BUT, the gameplay is almost as bad as Superman on the N64. It's irresponsive. Sometimes, a ring would be right in front of me and I'll struggle just to grab it as Sonic wiggles around. You also now need to charge up before you jump, which kills the momentum and make precise platforming more difficult for no valid reason. So yeah, a game that would have been better as a movie, but as a game, it fails miserably. A good presentation means nothing if the gameplay is garbage, which is the case here. I can't even suggest it to hardcore Sonic fans. A game that's better watched than played. Expand

Before you read, know that this is the second Sonic game whose main quest I ever beat (first was Black Knight), and will always be nostalgic for me. Now, to the game.

This is in my opinion, the worst Sonic game ever made. Say what you will about Sonic Boom Rise Of Lyric, at least the act of moving and jumping is easy. Secret Rings can't even get that right, with later missions requiring precision that the half-functional clumsy controls can barely provide. Plus for some reason, jumping requires Sonic to stop, essentially ruining one of Sonic's most defining characteristics: Momentum.

Of course the abysmal controls would be easier to swallow if the level design was good, but of course this isn't the case. In several cases the player will be left wondering what exactly are they supposed to do to avoid a specific obstacle or reach a particular red ring. Either the players put up with more poor design, or the poor controls in order to be rewarded with...more of the same. Except for the final boss fight which introduces more tacked-on gimmicky controls to master, as if the player hadn't suffer enough.

This game was rushed, Sonic Team was divided in half to work on this and Sonic 06 at the same time. But that doesn't excuse this game's poor quality. Sega knew this was bad. Sega knew Sonic 06 was bad, Sega knew Shadow the Hedgehog was bad, and they never got their affairs in order once and for all. Sonic continues being hit or miss to this very day. But no matter how terrible their games have been, this one takes the cake in my opinion. How any single game can be worse than almost any game with a jump button is frankly an achievement in of itself.

When a game is based on press the button in the correct time, the controllers should work properly, but this is not what happens. There are skills to "improve" the Sonic's moviment when you get experience, but these things must already be in the main control.
The theme song plays always when you finish a mission. The song is good, but it is cloying because of it.

To stop Sonic, you should press a button, this is really frustrated.
A lot of missions are just the same stage before, but a rampage variation or another kind of mission.
    About the story... silly.
The game is really fun, but the wii remote are not configurated to play it.

Terrible controls, a disposable story, and all around just not fun at all, Sonic and the Secret Rings is no less than a novelty that should be avoided immediately.

This game is a mess, but can be fun when it works. Right off the bat, the controls are a mess that barely work half the time. This heavily hurts the game and made the other minor flaws shine much worse. There is also lots of messy level design, with time when its hard to know where to go, and sometimes boost pads that run right into spikes and just bad choices that screw things up. Moving backwards is also a mess. The game also does a bad job of explaining things, such as there is no way to know which levels you need to do to advance and you have to just try random ones until a cutscene activates. The game also fails to explain how to customize your abilities, which is a cool part of the game but is never explained well. On the good side, the graphics and level themes are both good. When the controls work, there is fun to be had in some levels. The story is alright, and the boss fights are cool. The game itself I give a 5/10, but the inclusion of a party mode with minigames bumps it up to a 6. Expand

Геймплейно это runner, но не смотря на корридорность игра всё равно бросает вызов и нет, не из за управления, которое на мой взгляд вполне себе хорошее для Wii. I remember being super excited when I got the game, and enjoying my first few hours of playing it when I brought it home. But I guess I realized it wasn't worth my time, because on my old save file it says I only put in a few hours. I have tried on about four separate occasions since then to really get into this game but I just can't bring myself to do it. I can take about two and a half hours of this game before wanting to curb stomp Sonic. The game's menus are a nightmare to navigate, the progression is awful, and the controls hardly function half the time. The story, as per usual with Sonic games, is insanely goofy to the point where I can hardly keep a straight face. But probably the worst part of the game is the fact that it tries to seem longer than it is by making you redo stages over and over again with really minor changes, so it starts to feel extremely tedious. Some hardcore Sonic fans will defend this game, because, if we're being honest, they'll pretty much defend anything Sonic-related, but this game misses the mark on pretty much everything. The one exception to that is the graphics. Honestly, for a pretty rushed Wii game with not a huge dev team this looks pretty good, not much I can find fault with. But graphics alone can't save this game, and neither can nostalgia. Expand

The gameplay can be really fun most of the time but the only problem I have with it is that they rely too much on the motion controls. I didn't mind it until I had to make Sonic go backwards at some points to progress and can be a hell controlling but you can get used to it if you put some effort into it. Overall the story of the game is really good, gameplay is solid and the controls can be wonky to control and can be such a hassle to deal with if you're not used to playing on a Wii. A game that would take awhile to go back to playing but still a fun experience. 6/10 Expand

The controls in the adventure mode are stressful, since the game does not detect the controls well, and playing becomes practically impossible, even sometimes it damages the minigames, and you cannot say that it is your fault, because for example, I when using Wii Sports, the controls go perfectly, but in Sonic and the Secret Rings, it becomes unplayable, only comparable to Sonic 2006, but this game has at least something to highlight Expand

  1. An encouraging sign that good Sonic games can still be made. I had a tremendous time exploring the different stages and the skill points add a bit of depth to an otherwise straightforward game.

Although Sega deserves praise for Secret Rings' innovative single-player adventure, the less said about the four-player party mode, the better. It's another low-budget "Mario Party" rip-off that stretches out a few weak gameplay concepts into multiple multiplayer contests.

By no means perfect, but it's still a fantastic game that finally gives the blue blazer the sort of fast-paced, slick action he deserves. It's tricky to master but once you do it really shines. [Mar 2007, p.62]
