Shahra pleads with Sonic to save her world from the powerful evil genie, Erazor Djinn. As the story unfolds, Erazor confronts Sonic and pulls him into his evil plans. Sonic has a limited time to deliver Erazor the seven World Rings and save the storybook world. Navigating a world full of obstacles and enemies, from Erazor’s genie minions to dinosaurs, players use a bevy of core moves to keep up the pace. Holding the Wii Remote horizontally, players tilt the controller left and right to control Sonic's signature speed. They jump, perform sliding stops, pull off wicked homing attacks with a snap of the controller, and even walk backwards with a tilt of the Wii Remote. Players also hop aboard winged pots and fly with a vigorous shake of the controller. They launch themselves from catapults with a whip of the Wii Remote, surf through rapids on tree trunks and even pilot flying carpets in the race to restore this storybook world before all is lost. Players navigate 100 missions within eight wildly varied worlds, gaining new moves and abilities along the way. As players progress through the game, Sonic's abilities can be strategically equipped based on the demands of the mission ahead. From a boost called Speed Break to an ability called Time Break that slows the world around him to a near stop, Sonic needs every trick in the book to make sure Erazor Djinn stays in the storybook world. In addition to the single player adventure, Sonic and the Secret Rings offers 40 mini-games that support up to four players. Showcasing the abilities of the Wii Remote, players will use the controller as a violin bow, an ax, a canoe paddle and dozens of other motions to compete in these easy to pick-up-and-play games. 1. It has points where you must grind for levels much like an RPG. It’s also not for people with short attention spans, and its difficulty at times (just a touch below Sonic Riders’s learning curve—you’ll have to practice stages over and over to get them right) makes it not for people who give up at challenging games easily (poor folks). Still, none of these points makes this entry any less valid.

By no means perfect, but it's still a fantastic game that finally gives the blue blazer the sort of fast-paced, slick action he deserves. It's tricky to master but once you do it really shines. [Mar 2007, p.62]

Sonic finally delivers what the fans have been waiting for - simple, speedy action! [Apr 2007, p.68]
  4. The missions provide plenty of challenge with a steep learning curve and little forgiveness. Even the multiplayer provides a decent demonstration of what the WiiMote can do. The only truly awful aspects come with the horrendously crafted controls and camera.
  5. Because of their speedy nature, Sonic games really necessitate fresh surroundings, and especially in an on-rails game, different locales help to give the feeling that you’re actually progressing. Unfortunately, because of that these forced challenge levels work against the game, and that’s a shame, because otherwise Sonic and the Secret Rings may have very well been that comeback game Sonic has desperately needed.
  6. 60
One of the first fun Sonic experiences in some time. The overall experience of navigating through Sonic and the Secret Rings doesn't manage to bring the series back to glory, but at least it gives it some life.
  7. 40
Loose controls and repeating levels marred what could have been a break out hit for a series that desperately needed one.

I haven' finished it yet but I've played it enough to get a good taste of the game. There are still aspects of it that need improving like the dialoge. And it's a little frustrating that you don't get the soul gauge until the 4th level, but overall it's a good experience that you can't just blast through like other Sonic games. Expand

The camera is dismal and the artsy angles and inability to manually change lead you to tear your hair out, especially when you need to go back wards. The levels are unrewarding, with little imagination; Try repeating the same level 10 times because you don't know where to go. Controlling Sonic is also a nightmare too. To reverse you need to tilt the Wiimote on its back, which leaves all the buttons out of reach. Definitely try before you buy. Expand

On one hand, the controls suck, the mission structure is awful, the upgrade structure shouldn't have existed just to make the controls better, and you hear the main theme EVERYWHERE! On the other hand, the locales are interesting, the party mode is fun, the bosses are mostly enjoyable, the story is good, and the music is always as good as ever, despite Seven Rings in Hand repeating everywhere. I personally say spend your money on something else. Secret Rings definitely isn't abysmal, but you could've done more with your money. Expand

Sure it looks nice but the game does all the flashy parts automatically for you and leaves you with the grudgings. It's a linear, on rails experience that asks you to steer left and right and jump. You will constantly find yourself tutting in anger as something so simple as walking backwards or even stopping is a major challenge in itself. Boring cut scenes, repetitive tasks and nothing making you want to play. It's only redeeming factors are the not so bad soundtrack, pleasing to the eye graphics and a good sense of speed and adrenaline but everything else has no soul. Gameplay, simply, doesn't exist. You basically hold the wiimote sideways and tilt it left and right to turn, then thrust it forward to jump. The clever developers put steps You basically hold the wiimote sideways and tilt it left and right to turn, then thrust it forward to jump. The clever developers put steps at the end of platforms to stop you walking off, but that would have been preferable to walking up to the step to jump, thrusting forward, hitting the step and not jumping. Because of the tilt turn mechanism, sonic has the turing circle of Africa, (and no reverse) so he falls of the side of the platform as you try to go back and have another go. When you do repeat the section you then over compensate and jump far too early so Sonic doesnt make any of the the longer jumps. over and over. Then you have to attack enemies by the use of the same thrusting gesture. 'Wait til the target goes Red then thrust' it tells you as you walk past the fucker and its not turned red from green and thats if you can see the fucking target. Fight and jump the same movement? WTF Not a game in any way shape or form, just a series of shitty frustrations only made worse by the completly piss poor use of the wiimote as any kind of control device. I honestly dont know how anyone associated with this can sleep at night with the knowledge that they made this game or even think it would be a good idea to release it. i cant give it any kind of rating, but i have to so it got a big fat Zero Expand
