Mario makes his way into the multiplayer market for a main game in the series, very successfully. It is even better than New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS. It is better because it has a much higher difficulty and you can play the game with 3 others at once!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fun game! Even if you play this single player, it is a worthy entry in the Mario series.

The bulk of the fun comes from multiplayer. While it can be frustrating at times, especially with newer players, the fun factor increases as people become more comfortable with the game. In a nutshell, it's a traditional 2D Mario game with multiplayer but you don't have to take turns. It's a fantastic experience.

So why not a 10? The difficulty. I don't mind difficult games. I have fun with easy games as well. The problem with this Mario game is the first 8 worlds are relatively on the easy side. The difficulty goes up progressively as you move from world to world but it is still manageable. The problem I have is when you successfully collect all of the star coins from Worlds 1-8. After you accomplish this, a special World 9 opens. The difficulty in World 9 almost gets to the point of not wanting to finish the game. It can get extremely frustrating. Again, I don't mind difficulty in games but I was completely unprepared for World 9. If you want to finish the game (and I did), be prepared to be patient and be almost perfect to complete this World.

Other than this one minor gripe, I recommend this game for everyone!

A very good single player game. Although most levels don't seem to be built for multiplayer, playing with others is still fun and chaotic. The controls are spot on as usual in any Mario game. There many very creative fun levels and some very dull unimaginative levels as well. Perhaps with better level design suited for multiple players my score would have been raised to a 9/10. Game play, graphics, level design, items, bosses and even Yoshi make this a top notch entry into the Super Mario Bros. franchise. It's possible to breeze bye the game. Completing it 100% however is another story. The multi-player experience will prove an enjoyable and frustrating one.

One of the most beautiful features in the game: in each level there are 3 special coins, sometimes visible, sometimes hidden; if you take all the coins in every world, something happens......So, I don't understand again who gave a negative score. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a pleasure for longtime fans of the series like myself, with fond memories of the first four Mario titles on the Nintendo Entertainment System and SNES. The simplified control scheme uses only the Wii Remote held sideways like an NES controller, and works pretty well, though for an old-timer like me the "shaking" required for several of Mario's moves takes some getting used to. I also found NSMBW to be much more challenging than I expected; several levels took me quite a few tries to complete, but the game is very generous with 1-Ups and power ups, so there's no major frustration to be had. Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of trying multiplayer (which, like most Wii titles, is local only); an online multiplayer co-op or competition would have been most welcome. Expand

The basic concept and design has barely changed, but level design in brimming with new ideas. There are some new power-ups, including the propeller, which lets you soar into the air for a short amount of time. It sounds cool, and it is, but it's also a cheat in my opinion- it ruins many of the star coins.
The next new power-up is ice mario. This lets you freeze enemies then chuck their frozen bodies at other enemies. This is a good power-up, though the good ol' fire flower beats it by a mile. Lastly there's penguin. This is merely ice power with a few extra abilities. So it's not really new. The fire flower also returns, good news for any mario fan.
One of the biggest additions to New super mario bros wii is multiplayer. This is great, chaotic fun due to players getting in the way of each other. While this may sound bad, in reality, it just increases the challenge. But while someone powers up, gets hiy or dues, the screen freezes for a split second. So if you're making a jump when that happens, the momentary freeze will de-sync your jump, probably cause you to plummet to your doom. This results in largely broken multiplayer.
The graphics and sound of NSMBwii are good, but hardly great. The music is the same sort of bubbly, predictable, but catchy tracks you heard in New Super Mario Bros, while the graphics are a bit disappointing, even for a wii game.
Level design, meanwhile, is the mario we've come to know. Every single level is created with skill, offering a decent challenge and throwing in many different mechanics, though I was disapointed in the lack of many uses for the wiimotes motion sensing.
The bosses are the same ones from mario world- the koopa kids. Each has a twist that changes it from an average boss fight to something special. Every single boss is different and well thought out.
In conclusion, NSMB wii is a fantastic game, and one of the best 2D platformers on the wii. It does have flaws- mainly broken multiplayer and lacklustre visuals and music- but overall, it's a challenging game any fan of platforming games will enjoy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is heaps of fun to play! It's one of those games that you can sit down with your friends playing for hours, trying to get every last coin, star, and powerup. The multiplayer is really solid, the level design is great, and the graphics are, well, Mario. Although it's not the hardest game in the world, you will need to replay levels over and over to get it perfect. And that's just it. The replayability is one of the best parts of the game. There are some levels of this game that you can play as many as ten times in a row, and not get bored of. However, the best experience is when you're playing with two other people away from everything else in the world. Just sheer Mario, super-fun, platforming gameplay. So, if you're looking for a super fun game to play, buy this for ten bucks somewhere.

Let's start and talk about each mode, the single-player modes are fun as always but I do like the multi-player in this game even though it could a little too hectic at times. The difficulty is also good, it starts out easy but it actually does get fairly challenging later on, but it's nothing that will make you freak out or rage quit for the most part (With some exceptions *cough cough*World 9-7), however you will probably never see the Game Over Screen in this game because of how frequently 1-Ups show up in this game. The graphics are good for the most part they are nice and cartoony and really what graphics in a typical Mario game should be. I also like that we see the Kooplings again, it was good to see them return after not seeing them since Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (or Super Mario World if you don't count spin-offs). One problem I have with this game is that I think that it is recycling the same world themes in this again off of the DS game and other level types, I really think that if you are going to have the word "New" in the title, you should have some "New" things in each entry and I see that the later games on 3DS and Wii U have the same problems in fact those games recycle music from this game (which I think is absolutely blasphemous for a video game today), of course I don't think any NSMB game that came after NSMB Wii should exist, I think two was enough. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is better than the first game in EVERY WAY. From the gameplay, graphics, to EVERYTHING ELSE, this game is a blast to play. The only thing I hate about this game is the difficulty spike (World 5 & 8.......just saying) and the "too chaotic and cheap" multiplayer mode.

Making an improvement over the "okay" DS title New Super Mario Bros. was crucial for Nintendo...and you know what? They pulled it off.

The biggest new addition in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is 4-player multiplayer. Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad (Bucken Berry), and Yellow Toad (Ala Gold) are playable. It's a shame that the first player still always has to be Mario but it can be overlooked.

It's a shame that the first player still always has to be Mario but it can be overlooked. Multiplayer is a bit too hectic at times for my taste which is why I always prefer single-player in this game.

The bubble mechanic featured in multiplayer is a great addition if this is the first Mario game you've ever played. A more skilled player can race to the goal while you're in the bubble. Of course, another person can pop the bubble at any time, making it a bit unpredictable. The level design in the game can ranges from grassland, desert, and beach to ghost house, lava, and poisoned forest. These kinds of levels are featured in almost every Mario game, but for some reason it seems a lot more varied than its predecessor.

The famous Mario foes, the Koopalings return from Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. They all have different attack patterns and their fights are really unique. You fight against each one twice. The first fight is always really simple but on the second fight, the wizard Kamek appears and gives them a special power or changes up the terrain. The bosses in the game are designed incredibly well and the final boss *no spoilers* is fantastic and does not disappoint.

My only true problem with the game is the difficulty. The game can be a bit tough at times, especially during multiplayer which is why I wouldn't recommend it. Your character might not respond at times to the controls but it's an extremely rare occasion. The difficulty isn't a huge problem as it was fixed in later New Super Mario installments.

Overall, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a huge improvement over its predecessor with great level design and arguably even better bosses. It definitely deserves a spot in your Wii library.

I can't even review this game. Not because it's terrible, it's just so dull. It works perfectly fine and if you love Super Mario Bros. 3 and want what amounts to a remake, here you go. But it's just not my thing (I was always more of a Super Mario World fan).

Of course, Princess Peach is captured by Bowser and you have to save her by going through 8 worlds and beating Bowser and his kids. Here's a description of each world:
World 1: The enjoyable and easy grassland world with Princess Peach's castle in it. Enemy: Larry.
World 2: The desert world that is a bit harder than World 1. Not really hard and partly enjoyable. Enemy: Roy.
World 3: A fun snowy world that is easy and very enjoyable. Enemy: Lemmy.
World 4: The beach world. I personally hate the beach world the most because you have to go under water in some levels and enemies like purple cheep cheeps are down there and I hate them. Enemy: Wendy O.
World 5: The poisonous jungle world. I love this world a lot. A bit hard and super fun. Enemy: Iggy.
World 6: The mountains world. Partly hard and partly fun. Enemy: Morton Jr.
World 7: The sky/cloud world. Quite fun and in between easy and hard. Enemy: Ludwig Von.
World 8: The volcano/lava world. This world has Bowser's castle in it. Mostly hard. Enemy: Bowser.
After completing those worlds, you continue to World 9 which is a star world.

I feel like this is one of those video games that is trying to please too many people at once; this is due to the fact that it plays everything incredibly safe. The difficulty isn't very hard (although, I will say, I did one hundred percent complete this game, which was quite taxing); the final boss fight is laughable (even in the second phase) and all of the other bosses are quite similar. The individual levels are fun, though, and are, clearly, handcrafted with care, showing off level design that is flexible to each player, allowing multiple play styles to succeed. Contrarily, the bosses are simple: Just jump on each of them three times; I understand that this is a Mario game, so they need to be accessible to a wide variety of audiences, including the younger, more inexperienced market, but that doesn't mean that there can't be anything for the more skilled players. NSMB brought Mario back to 2d in some exciting ways, NSMB2 had a unique theme even if it was a bit superfluous, and NSMB U and Luigi were just better designed and had better controls. Because NSMB Wii was designed four 4 players, the levels are empty if you play single-player. At the end of the day, this is not a terrible game by any means, you can still have some good fun with friends while playing it. It gets around a 5-6 for lack of creativity. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't remember much of my experience with this game when I played it 9 years ago and I was 7 years old. Now that I finally decided to play it again thanks to a friend of mine, I can say I had a pretty good time. However, it's nothing amazing.

The ideas introduced in this game tend to either work or don't. The Propeller Mushroom and Penguin Suit are cool, but other power-ups like the Ice Flower seem redundant (since Penguin Suits are utilized almost just as much) and the Mini Mushroom are super underutilized as opposed to the DS game. I'm also not a big fan of the level design. My least favorite levels tend to be gimmicky, like the ones where you tilt the Wii Remote. Unlike games like Super Mario Galaxy, where they managed to make this fun, (in my opinion) they aren't fun at all here. The Multiplayer just outright failed. You already know why.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii doesn't really feel very inspired if you ask me, as it just takes a big bite out of the DS game. However, this game at least does enough to stand out from it. (Which is something I can't say for any other New Super Mario Bros. game after it) This is the first Super Mario game that didn't entirely have its own identity.

The good parts of this game are legitimately pretty good though, and the highlight for me has to be the final boss, where Bowser grows huge and attempts to kill Mario in cold blood as he tries to escape him. The presentation is nothing to write home about, but the graphics look decent, and the soundtrack is perfectly average. (With the exception of the Staff Roll and some of the World 8 themes, those are great)

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a good game, but there are Mario games I would choose over it. I will admit that this is one of the better New Super Mario Bros. games.

    - new power ups. Bringing Yoshi back is cool, adds diversity to the gameplay

    - the numbered platforms where you had to kill enemies to keep the platform afloat was neat.

    - the spin koopa cart boss fight was kinda fun

    - the wiimote controls feel great. The dpad and buttons are perfect for platforming.

    - underwater level with luminescence jelly fish was creative.

    Bad

    - not being to save after each level was annoying. Replaying levels that I’ve already beaten just to return to the level that I lost is repetitive and not fun.

To say this sucks is to say you hate gaming, this is the 3rd best 2d (2.5d, whatever it's still in the 2D realm) mario game i've played. Next to SMB3 and SMB1. The story is the same, the gameplay is awesome, as typical mario games are. The graphics are suited for 2.

New Super Mario Bros Wii, the lukewarm cocoa of Mario games. I'll admit I have a soft spot for this game, since it was one of the first games I had ever owned, but calling this game one of the greatest platformers on the system is a bit of a stretch. To a console that is home to Super Mario Galaxy, Wario Land Shake It, Raving Rabbids Go Home, and Donkey Kong Country Returns...this game isNew Super Mario Bros Wii, the lukewarm cocoa of Mario games. I'll admit I have a soft spot for this game, since it was one of the first games I had ever owned, but calling this game one of the greatest platformers on the system is a bit of a stretch. To a console that is home to Super Mario Galaxy, Wario Land Shake It, Raving Rabbids Go Home, and Donkey Kong Country Returns...this game is certainly, the least interesting of the bunch.

The story, Peach is kidnapped on her birthday. Go save her. This game may have stellar controls, colorful graphics, and decent level variety. But ambition? Not a trace. Once you've seen one New Super Mario Bros game, you've essentially seen the rest. Because most of the level themes and enemies are practically identical compared to the previous entries, it's hard to find a reason to replay this one unless you have family multiplayer nostalgia like me.

This game may be responsible for introducing me to the Super Mario franchise, but without any thematically impressive cutscenes like in those other platformers I mentioned, its hard to get a feel for what this series is all about besides good level design. I want something to think about during the journey. Bowser's new secret weapon, hints about returning bosses, some new villains...a title like New Super Mario Bros feels very deciding when barely anything about the game feels new.

I will say the most stand out features about this game include the chase with Giant Bowser, the King Bills that appear in the final stage in World Nine, and the boss fights. But other than that, it's more a Mario game to just play to win. The only reward for one hundred percent completion is endless item mini games, it's a bit lame. Unless you have some friends to join you for the ride, you're better off just sticking with New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. Its all you need.

This is just your average platformer, nothing special. If you like Mario, or 2D platformers in general, it's pretty good

  1. Enjoying Mario in the genre that saw him born is always a great pleasure, even if you are not a fan of the platform titles. Nintendo returns to its specialty: to offer hours and hours of fun by giving us games with their own personality and a shellproof gameplay.

That sense of cohesiveness isn't always present in New Super Mario Bros. and it makes for an uneven experience that's difficult to score.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is an excellent game with friends, and I had a great deal of challenging fun with the solo mode. But if you’re looking for a new Mario adventure that’s tailored to creating the maximum amount of fun for just one person, you’ll have to wait for next year’s Super Mario Galaxy 2.
