Pretty uninspiring, the main game has a few small improvements over the DS title, but there is zero replayability value. once you've done everything, the game kindly tells you so and it's time to put it on the shelf forever. What happened to all the awesome multiplayer minigames from the DS version?

This game is the best 2d mario game I've played, but it's also the most frustrating, but it's that certain kind of funny "I can't believe that just happened" frustrating that doesn't get you too angry. It's also generouse with extra lives to make up for the constant dieing.

While the single player is dissapointing, it's very un ambitous and has few good ideas, the multiplayer is a as much fun as any Mario title. The DS game is arguably better, with more imaginative levels, the latest console 2D Mario game is dissapoiting, but still a solid and good platform game, and has some of the best multiplayer co-op action on Wii, only beaten by the likes of Monster Hunter 3.

I love battling Koopa Kids, and the final Bowser boss fight has to be up their with the best boss fights in a Mario platformer. The game also has a multiplayer mode...but that's where it falls flat. Characters can bounce off of each others heads, and the levels start to feel very cramped in multiplayer. There is also not a lot of item variety, and when a Nunchuk is plugged in, the on-screen directions still act as if the Nunchuk is not plugged in. This confused me in the beginning. On the plus side again, the 3 Star Coins hidden in each level mean that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will keep gamers entertained for a long time. So, overall, I'd say that New Super Mario Bros. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a pleasure for longtime fans of the series like myself, with fond memories of the first four Mario titles on the Nintendo Entertainment System and SNES. The simplified control scheme uses only the Wii Remote held sideways like an NES controller, and works pretty well, though for an old-timer like me the "shaking" required for several of Mario's moves takes some getting used to. I also found NSMBW to be much more challenging than I expected; several levels took me quite a few tries to complete, but the game is very generous with 1-Ups and power ups, so there's no major frustration to be had. Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of trying multiplayer (which, like most Wii titles, is local only); an online multiplayer co-op or competition would have been most welcome. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is heaps of fun to play! It's one of those games that you can sit down with your friends playing for hours, trying to get every last coin, star, and powerup. The multiplayer is really solid, the level design is great, and the graphics are, well, Mario. Although it's not the hardest game in the world, you will need to replay levels over and over to get it perfect. And that's just it. The replayability is one of the best parts of the game. There are some levels of this game that you can play as many as ten times in a row, and not get bored of. However, the best experience is when you're playing with two other people away from everything else in the world. Just sheer Mario, super-fun, platforming gameplay. So, if you're looking for a super fun game to play, buy this for ten bucks somewhere.
(Although, and as much of a Mario fan as I am, I find games like Super Meat Boy to be more fun. If only that game had multiplayer.)

Let's start and talk about each mode, the single-player modes are fun as always but I do like the multi-player in this game even though it could a little too hectic at times. The difficulty is also good, it starts out easy but it actually does get fairly challenging later on, but it's nothing that will make you freak out or rage quit for the most part (With some exceptions *cough cough*World 9-7), however you will probably never see the Game Over Screen in this game because of how frequently 1-Ups show up in this game. The graphics are good for the most part they are nice and cartoony and really what graphics in a typical Mario game should be. I also like that we see the Kooplings again, it was good to see them return after not seeing them since Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (or Super Mario World if you don't count spin-offs). One problem I have with this game is that I think that it is recycling the same world themes in this again off of the DS game and other level types, I really think that if you are going to have the word "New" in the title, you should have some "New" things in each entry and I see that the later games on 3DS and Wii U have the same problems in fact those games recycle music from this game (which I think is absolutely blasphemous for a video game today), of course I don't think any NSMB game that came after NSMB Wii should exist, I think two was enough. I feel like this is one of those video games that is trying to please too many people at once; this is due to the fact that it plays everything incredibly safe. The difficulty isn't very hard (although, I will say, I did one hundred percent complete this game, which was quite taxing); the final boss fight is laughable (even in the second phase) and all of the other bosses are quite similar. The individual levels are fun, though, and are, clearly, handcrafted with care, showing off level design that is flexible to each player, allowing multiple play styles to succeed. Contrarily, the bosses are simple: Just jump on each of them three times; I understand that this is a Mario game, so they need to be accessible to a wide variety of audiences, including the younger, more inexperienced market, but that doesn't mean that there can't be anything for the more skilled players. The soundtrack is very iconic and exciting to listen to, it has its own personality in a cute way.

Lastly, multiplayer works very well, and it's the best way to play the game.

Wii may not be the best platformer out there, but it's still very much a fun one. In this game we take control of Mario and friends to save Princess Peach.....plot summary over. (it's a Mario game what'd you expect)

Presentation wise the game is pretty good though that's about it. In fact the lack of originality is this game's biggest issue. The world themes are the same as NSMB for the DS and if you know that game, you'll know that they're pretty generic. Not to mention the graphics while pleasant, aren't anything special and the innovation is non-existent. The music also isn't one of Mario's strongest, though there are still some bops in here. My favorites include the athletic theme, map overworld themes, final boss, and end credits music. If you're looking for a platformer that breaks the mold, you won't find it here. That said, this game makes up for it with its controls and level design.

Mario and friends control really well and in a platformer that's especially important to me.. There's plenty of moves you can perform as this game incorporates moves from 3D Mario games. it may seem like a lot but it won't take long to get used to it. It's fluid, varied, and satisfying. To make things even better we have the power ups. All of them are winners. The classics are as fun as ever and the new ones are great additions. The Propeller Mushroom can be very handy to gain heights and it comes with a nifty drill move to rain death from above. The Penguin Suit has a really fun slide ability and is able to freeze enemies (which makes the Ice Flower obsolete, oops). Overall the controls are very satisfactory and the power ups are fun.

The levels themselves are also very good. There isn't anything that special about them but they're at least mostly consistent in quality. Some worlds are more fun than others (World 5 and 8 are my favorites while 2 and 6 are my least favorites) but there is none I dislike and their gimmicks do enough to set them apart. The best way to play these levels is to speedrun them. It's really satisfying though not all levels are designed for this playstyle and I did lose most of my lives due to recklessness. Though to be honest, unless you're extremely impatient, you won't lose many lives.

This game's difficulty curve is mostly balanced. There's a small difficult spike here and there but it basically starts off easy and by the end it's mostly standard. This also applies to the boss fights which aren't all that great. Each world has two fights with a Koopaling. The first fight all play mostly the same. Really easy to dodge attacks and three hits before death. The second battles are more interesting and a few can get rather tense but they're nothing that special still. The exceptions are the Bowser Jr. battles. These are still not that hard but they're all satisfying. (Especially the second one) Also the final boss is sick, If a little easy. So if you're looking for a challenge, then you'll only find it near the end of the game. Though if cooperation is your only weakness, then don't play this with three other players.

Multiplayer is a great addition to this game. I played this with one other person and it was fun. (Especially the sabotage) Plus the mechanic that allows you to go into a bubble at any time to save you from harm or a bottomless pit is rather useful to help younger players to get into Mario...(or cheat). So definitely consider this for some good multiplayer fun. Fair warning though: More than 2 players will more than likely lead to chaos.

The last thing I wanna talk about is the completion process. The only thing you need to do is find all of the secret exits, collect all the star coins, and AVOID THE SUPER GUIDE AT ALL COST!!!. (Trust me) I think this is definitely worth it as it forces you to go off the beaten path at times and come on, who doesn't love collecting shiny things? The reward for 100% all may not be very special but this is a case of the journey being the real reward. (But the star coins do unlock some other things that are really cool)

Overall, I'd still say this game holds up. There isn't anything amazing or original about it and it's on the easy side but even ignoring my nostalgia it's still a consistently enjoyable game. The controls are satisfactory, the power-ups are mostly strong, the levels are generally well-crafted, the presentation is still good, and the multiplayer is fun. It's not the best 2D adventure the king of platformers has to offer, but it's still a fun one and a great intro to the genre.

Score: 8/10 (probably a high 7 at best but I have nostalgia for this one. It's the first game I ever beat. Cut me some slack. :D)

That would be like if you weren't allowed to eat until you turned five or something. What if I wanted to rent this game and only play through it once, or play one stage before going to school? Well, I guess I'll have to beat the entire game to get the best out of it. I only planned to write a sentence but this is a HUGE problem, I mean WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! As far as the rest of the game, it's what you'd expect from a mario game. It sucks that most star coins require powerups or really specific platforming to get. To quote another review I've read "maybe I'm not Japanese enough, but failing the whole thing because I messed up once just doesn't work for me. This game is frustrating as hell, the ice levels in particular, but it's the kind of Demon's Souls frustrating where you want to say "just one more try" and than fail a thousand more times, but fortunatly it's generouse with the 1ups so actually dieing wouldn't be much of a problem. This game is really flawed, but it's the best 2d Mario game I've played, so check it out if your in to it. Technically the game looks fine for the Wii, the childish art direction adds a lots of charm to all Nintendo's platformers but it lacks originality in the level design (almost no use of the motion controls) and the boss design as well. On the other hand the games doesn't have any bug like always with Nintendo.

Concerning the gameplay once again the lack of innovations can be a bit annoying if you're not a fan , but most of all I find the character a bit clumsy and jumps aren't as perfect as in Donkey Kong for example, this was really the biggest lay down of this game for me. I don't explain how they didn't nailed this part, because generally they do, for the first time in a Nintendo platformer I was frustrated by the controls.

Story wise, well you know what to expect from Nintendo, all the Super Mario Bros could be considered as a perpetual reboot considering the lack of consideration for what happened in the past, anyway the story is as simple as it gets, if you're looking for an interesting one don't buy a Mario game. Concerning the length of the game you can expect between 12 to 15 hours to finish all the levels at 100%, which is a good average for the genre.

In conclusion I don't consider this game interesting if you already know Super Mario Bros unless you're a Mario fan, the Wii offers better experience of the same genre (Donkey Kong, Kirby). And even for newbie, I think the first games (if you don't have the hardware there's a collection available for Wii) are better choices. I might be underrating the game a bit, but I expect the best from an old franchise like this one and I was disappointed by its gameplay and the lack of risks in game design.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't remember much of my experience with this game when I played it 9 years ago and I was 7 years old. Now that I finally decided to play it again thanks to a friend of mine, I can say I had a pretty good time. However, it's nothing amazing.

The ideas introduced in this game tend to either work or don't. The Propeller Mushroom and Penguin Suit are cool, but other power-ups like the Ice Flower seem redundant (since Penguin Suits are utilized almost just as much) and the Mini Mushroom are super underutilized as opposed to the DS game. I'm also not a big fan of the level design. My least favorite levels tend to be gimmicky, like the ones where you tilt the Wii Remote. Unlike games like Super Mario Galaxy, where they managed to make this fun, (in my opinion) they aren't fun at all here. The Multiplayer just outright failed. You already know why.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii doesn't really feel very inspired if you ask me, as it just takes a big bite out of the DS game. However, this game at least does enough to stand out from it. (Which is something I can't say for any other New Super Mario Bros. game after it) This is the first Super Mario game that didn't entirely have its own identity.

The good parts of this game are legitimately pretty good though, and the highlight for me has to be the final boss, where Bowser grows huge and attempts to kill Mario in cold blood as he tries to escape him. The presentation is nothing to write home about, but the graphics look decent, and the soundtrack is perfectly average. (With the exception of the Staff Roll and some of the World 8 themes, those are great)

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a good game, but there are Mario games I would choose over it. I will admit that this is one of the better New Super Mario Bros. games.

My main problem with NSMB Wii is that it is just too much of the same. Some levels (especially those early in World 1) look like they have been lifted straight out of NSMB on the DS, and the general feel of the game doesn't feel revolutionary and fresh like the Galaxy games. The only gameplay element I will seek to praise here is the addition of the Koopa Kids, Bowser's 7 'other' children - they add variety to the game, though sadly not as much as the varied and interesting bosses of NSMB DS.
I will agree some levels in this game are frustrating (particularly some of those in World 2 which had me literally screaming at the TV), but thankfully this game is not as easy as the cakewalk of the DS prequel.
All in all, an OK game, but for something truly special and/or revolutionary, reach for Mario's 3D Wii cousins rather than this slightly lacklustre 2D edition.

This game has absolutely no right to exist. I've played it 100 times before. Even with some creative new levels, and enjoyable moments it can't stop me from feeling like Nintendo has been milking the same game for far to long. I love Mario games don't get me wrong, Galaxies 2 is one of the finest 3d platformers I know, this is because it does things I haven't seen before. Hell No. Expand

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is just not as fun as the originals. I do like how it has it's own new items and controls utilizing the Wii remote but it is still just not as fun. I would only say it is fun for a little while but then you lose interest. If you are looking for a Mario game for the Wii I would recommend Galaxy and Galaxy 2. New Super Mario Bros. The game can be too difficult in some Worlds. If you have completed all the normal levels in a World but lose all of your lives on the castle then the game makes you beat all of the levels in that World over again as the game only saves after you beat a castle. There should have been a feature to where you can save the game and come back to that save when you lose all of your lives.

So-so, graphics are OK, but the gameplay is not so enjoyable as it could be, in my opinion. Kirby Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Super Mario Galaxy (1 + 2) are really great with their gameplay and mechanics. If forget about the aforementioned games it is a good game, but in comparison with them, it is not so great and enjoyable. This is really the start of Mario being less and less inspired in each mainline 2D game. I think the reason Nintendo hasn't released a brand new traditional 2D Mario since 2013 is because they are out of ideas. NSMB brought Mario back to 2d in some exciting ways, NSMB2 had a unique theme even if it was a bit superfluous, and NSMB U and Luigi were just better designed and had better controls. Because NSMB Wii was designed four 4 players, the levels are empty if you play single-player. At the end of the day, this is not a terrible game by any means, you can still have some good fun with friends while playing it. It gets around a 5-6 for lack of creativity. I hope whenever Nintendo decides to make a traditional 2d Mario again that they don't just reuse assets from the NSMB games and aren't afraid to get a little weird and wacky with their art style, themes, level designs, and music. This is still a decent time, but it's lost its luster due to the sheer amount of New Super Mario Bros games we got afterwards.

To say this sucks is to say you hate gaming, this is the 3rd best 2d (2.5d, whatever it's still in the 2D realm) mario game i've played. Next to SMB3 and SMB1. The story is the same, the gameplay is awesome, as typical mario games are. The graphics are suited for 2.

New Super Mario Bros Wii, the lukewarm cocoa of Mario games. I'll admit I have a soft spot for this game, since it was one of the first games I had ever owned, but calling this game one of the greatest platformers on the system is a bit of a stretch. To a console that is home to Super Mario Galaxy, Wario Land Shake It, Raving Rabbids Go Home, and Donkey Kong Country Returns...this game is certainly, the least interesting of the bunch.

The story, Peach is kidnapped on her birthday. Go save her. This game may have stellar controls, colorful graphics, and decent level variety. But ambition? Not a trace. Once you've seen one New Super Mario Bros game, you've essentially seen the rest. Because most of the level themes and enemies are practically identical compared to the previous entries, it's hard to find a reason to replay this one unless you have family multiplayer nostalgia like me.

This game may be responsible for introducing me to the Super Mario franchise, but without any thematically impressive cutscenes like in those other platformers I mentioned, its hard to get a feel for what this series is all about besides good level design. I want something to think about during the journey. Bowser's new secret weapon, hints about returning bosses, some new villains...a title like New Super Mario Bros feels very deciding when barely anything about the game feels new.

I will say the most stand out features about this game include the chase with Giant Bowser, the King Bills that appear in the final stage in World Nine, and the boss fights. But other than that, it's more a Mario game to just play to win. The only reward for one hundred percent completion is endless item mini games, it's a bit lame. Unless you have some friends to join you for the ride, you're better off just sticking with New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. Its all you need.

It's a decent 2D Mario platformer. A lot of chaotic fun with a group of friends.

  1. Enjoying Mario in the genre that saw him born is always a great pleasure, even if you are not a fan of the platform titles. Nintendo returns to its specialty: to offer hours and hours of fun by giving us games with their own personality and a shellproof gameplay.

That sense of cohesiveness isn't always present in New Super Mario Bros. and it makes for an uneven experience that's difficult to score.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is an excellent game with friends, and I had a great deal of challenging fun with the solo mode. But if you’re looking for a new Mario adventure that’s tailored to creating the maximum amount of fun for just one person, you’ll have to wait for next year’s Super Mario Galaxy 2.
