Right out of the gate the game's theme of breaking typical Zelda conventions shows. The moment you hop out of the shrine of resurrection and view the vast depths of Hyrule is mesmerizing. I believe this moment is iconic. The Great Plateau is a game design marvel. Tutorials in open world games are just a hindrance but you can see how the developers crafted a wonderful tutorial. The Great Plateau teaches you about shrines, towers, Guardians, and combat. It has an abundance of detail so exploration in it makes it enjoyable. It's the most linear part of the game yet it still feels non-linear. You can attack the shrines in any order, discover enemy encampments and gear at any point. I appreciate how the game sets up props you can use in combat situations that highlight the superb physics engine.

After The Great Plateau, the game truly opens up. The fact you can go and destroy Ganon at any point is amazing because it lets you play the game at your pace and skill. I think Hyrule is a regionally very diverse and it contains so much to explore. I'll admit after 70 hours it becomes a little repetitive because you just go finding shrines, korok seeds, and towers. However, those first 70 hours are magical. Finding overworld bosses, watching enemies detailed animations, finding crazy loot, and discovering wonderful landscapes is so addictive. Climbing, especially, is extremely fun. Breath of the Wild is at its best when this beauty of exploration glistens off the screen.

Combat in this game is overall pretty good. The environments in the overworld when you use the physics engine for creative kills is super rewarding and fun. The normal swordplay with the 3 main variants of weapons is fun. The one-handed sword, spears, and two-handed heavy swords are fun at first. The perfect shield bash has fairly strict timing, especially compared to Skyward Sword's mechanic. The problem with combat is the perfect dodge. It works really well with swords and two-handed swords however with spears the timing feels bugged and too easy to use. The flaw in the perfect dodge is apparent to the final boss. I won't spoil anything but I will say that many times I found I performed a perfect dodge that didn't deserve to go into the cool matrix-esq animation. The main flaw with combat is weapon durability. I found that in early the durability was fun because you could smash your broken weapons into an enemies skull and pick up other weak weapons on the fly. However, in the later game, you have really strong weapons that feel like they break way too quickly and sometimes it's hard to find equally rare weapons. I understand the reason why durability is in the game. It makes you master a multitude of different weapons and I think it does achieve this. I don't think durability is as bad as people make it out to be but it does have some flaws. The bow combat is snappy. On the mention of quick and snappy, the UI, at least for hot keying weapons, is very fast and efficient. Overall combat in the game is good but there are some things the developers could have done to make it better.

The shrines and dungeons in the game are a mixed. The incentive to beat them is basically to obtain new skills and increase your heart and stamina capacity. Too many of the shrines are combat oriented. They become stale really fast. There are some really astonishing puzzles in the shrines and I found the main bulk of them to be excellent. I especially appreciate the ones that can be broken by using the mechanics the game gives to you. The mechanics the game gives are the runes. All three of them are used very well throughout the world, however, sometimes Cyanosis is a tad underutilized(but just a little). Anyways, I think it is a positive when you can use them to break puzzles because it highlights the beauty of multiple solutions. My main gripe with past Zelda games is that too many puzzles are one solution based. So this is a positive. The negative however are some of the shrines that having nothing but a chest. These shrines are good sometimes when a quest getting to them is really long and strenuous. Yet, some are a little too easy or short thus making the reveal of the shrine being a chest one kind of underwhelming. I won't spoil too much but the dungeons are really good puzzle wise, Length wise they are disappointing especially if you are a hardcore Zelda fan and have experienced some long amazing dungeons. The design of these dungeons is amazing, however somewhere in development length was discarded. The bosses are pretty good and don't rely on using the one dungeon item to beat them, like other Zeldas that are infamous for doing that.

I won't go into the story much but it's pretty shallow. For a game like this, I think it overall works because with such a non-linear structure it is hard to create an engaging story. It's not terrible but I still think something was missing to make it good.

The game is great but not flawless.

    1 - Ocarina of Time
    2- Skyward Sword
    3- Wind Waker
    4- Breath of Wild
    5- Spirit Track
    (?)Majora Mask
    (?) Between Worlds

    Abstract:

A Sandbox of Zelda is very easy. The world is dead, no animals, no clima, all is empty. Tecnichally poor but beatiful (but poor). With food and weapons (you can find easily in any place on Hyrule) you are God mode, and you cant die. Very easy game. The Story... regular.

Good game, yeah, good, no perfect or the best in the world.... o no, only good. My list of game of zelda, in order I prefer, is:

    1 - Ocarina of Time
    2- Skyward Sword
    3- Wind Waker
    4- Breath of Wild
    5- Spirit Track
(?)Majora Mask (I dont play it but i will)
(?) Between Worlds (I dont play it but i will)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My feelings on this game are terribly mixed.
Good: a truly excellent open world, beautifully designed, artistically gorgeous, endlessly explorable. It brings fresh life to the now-standard idea of an open world. The new Link is full of personality for a guy who never really talks. NPCs are charming, quirky, and often funny, and exhausting their dialogue options is always worthwhile. Kass and Paya are personal favorites. The physics engine was incredible! One thing they really did right was in all the little details. There are plenty of joyous surprises for those who want to experiment and explore. So let me repeat--this is an excellent game, and it's worth you time. A superlative game, compared to others on the market. It is not, however, without flaws, even quite serious flaws.

Bad: The enemy variety is uninspired. A handful of enemies that are repeated endlessly, with different skins and colors. Unlike previous Zelda games, you won't find any redeads, wallmasters, poes, or any unexpectedly terrifying monsters like Dead Hand from OOT. No scary enemies or creepy dungeons where you might hear the telltale shriek of a redead paralyzing you.

Hand in hand with that is the boss variety. Unlike previous Zelda games, there aren't new and exciting, visually impressive bosses that challenge you to use the skills and tools at your disposal. You fight the same boss 4 times, and then again as the end-game boss. Over and over, with slightly different elemental powers. The final boss looks like it's trying to pass for a monster in Yharnam--but if I wanted to fight Yharnam monsters, I'd be playing Bloodborne, not Zelda. It's nothing like Ganon. It doesn't have the crushing difficulty to match a Bloodborne enemy anyway.

Combat quickly becomes lackluster with the frustrating weapon durability mechanic. Rather than encouraging variety, it encourages you to use your worst weapons the whole time for fear of losing your good ones, or the ones with elemental powers that you need for special enemies. The master sword's "energy limit" is some serious garbage too. A breakable master sword? Really? In the end, the durability mechanics turned the MS from the Blade of Evil's Bane to the Blade of Chopping Down Trees Because I Don't Want to Waste My Other Blades.

The story is often charming and could have been great, if they had put more focus on developing a compelling story. But, like the music, it's so downplayed it's barely noticeable, so that when the occasional familiar Zelda element slides in, it feels weirdly out of place.

The music is not very memorable, and nothing like the sweeping epics of its predecessors. Once in a while, a familiar tune will play, and in the final castle, it finally comes in full-force. But it feels like a fun musical Zelda reference in a non-Zelda game. Jarring.

Dungeon variety is woefully nonexistent. Arguably the most impactful element of the franchise's incredible legacy, sprawling, complex, rich, and sometimes nerve-wracking dungeons are part of what made the series so famous. They're iconic. But they're totally excised this time. You have shrines, 120 samey mini-dungeons with repetitive puzzles. And you have divine beasts, 4 samey, slightly larger mini-dungeons. There's no variety to them at all, nothing to make them even visually distinct and interesting. Even exploring the beautiful open world begins to lose its appeal when you realize that the only rewards you will find are shrines and korok seeds.

I could go on. But it boils down to this one sad, strange feeling. There's a difference between shaking up convention and straightforward iconoclasm. And this game falls too hard toward the latter. Utterly gutting the series icons gave us a breathlessly beautiful product, with nothing under the surface, least of all a Zelda game. Maybe it sounds trivial, but I find that Link's redesign is not only one of the worst offenses, but emblematic of the underlying problem. They took Link's iconic green outfit with his pointy hat away, reportedly because it doesn't "look cool." Sure, in isolation, there's nothing especially cool-looking about the green tunic. But it DOES look cool--because it looks like Link, from the Legend of Zelda, and Link is cool. He makes it look heroic. There are lots of cool-looking video game characters out there, but there's only one who looks like Link. The attitude among the devs that said Link isn't cool-looking enough is the same attitude that said Ganon needed to look like a Soulsborne villain. It's the same attitude that took away deep dungeons, exciting bosses, creative enemy designs, and cool weapon variety. It never felt like I was playing Zelda. As an open-world RPG with a barely passable Zelda skin, it was neat. But it soured so fast I was feeling heartbroken by halfway through the game. It's sad to see the devs disregarding the legacy of such an important series. In the end, what makes Zelda so special was gone, and that, for me, outweighed the joys.

Nintendo decided to change its approach in terms of game structure for the latest Legend of Zelda game. The series has always been an open world adventure but with a regular path of progression which spurs the storyline forward. Aside from various skips and breaks, the game progresses in a certain order. Breath of the Wild (BotW) takes the open-world approach to the next level. When I first booted up the game I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Having seen the previews for it, I had a rough idea of the gameplay style but nothing could have prepared me for what I got from this game. Upon stepping out of the Chamber of Resurrection and seeing the massive world Nintendo had put before me, I was left speechless. Normally with open world games there is so much to do and explore that I often find myself feeling overwhelmed. But this was different. Instead of feeling brain-cramped with everything going on, I felt a surging sense of excitement.

Despite the occasional technical issue/lag spike, this is by far one of the best games I have ever played. The only other thing I could think of that holds it back is the lack of button remapping and the atrocious English dub, which can thankfully be changed to the original Japanese track after a free download. It deserves all of the praise it has been getting. Kudos to the developers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is the ultimate Zelda game, as it's challenging in a way that it isn't frustrating and it is very satisfying. The scenery is beautiful and the characters are really interesting and you feel like you are making a real impact in the world. The cutscenes and voice acing are on point and surviving in this world is a fun challenge, as it can be difficult without the proper equipment and the blood moons are a challenge itself.

The story feels unique while keeping the same core of the original games and the open world is not only beautiful but massive, and the shrines are a fun challenge that test not only your combat skills, but also your intellect.

I got this game yesterday and I haven't been able to put it down since and if you can, i'd recommend picking this game up as this will give you endless fun for ages!

I've spent so much time searching out and completing shrines (or not and just saving them as travel points). There are so many special points, but I think my favorite part so far was jumping off a mountain, soaring down on a paraglider, and landing on a wild horse. Whatever you want to do, you can do it.

I don't get all the complaints about frame drops, etc. I'm too old for that crap as I remember the leap from the Atari to NES to Playstation. Graphics do not make a great game, though BOTW is stunning. The bottom line is that great gameplay makes a great game. So many of the best feelings I've had playing video games have been replicated here but in a much deeper way: the sense of openness I got playing GTA 3 years ago, running around avoiding large enemies or skip traveling like in Xenoblade Chronicles, playing off of every structure like in the old Tony Hawk series, interacting with the world (and just getting lost) like in Minecraft, that feeling of exploration and loneliness from Metroid, Of course, this is all wrapped up in that awesome Zelda lore that so much of us have loved for so long.

Like every piece of entertainment and art, this game will not be for everyone. But for some of us, this game will be the best we've ever played.

The freedom to explore, and the rewarding way they designed exploration makes for a very fun experience. The Story is good so far, but minimal in a good way. The combat is fun and varied, and the cooking system is really fun to mess around with, but also crucial to being able to take on harder fights. The weapon system is good too, took a little getting used to, but it's fun using different weapons so frequently, and they are varied enough to provide a lot of different styles of combat.

Cons: The frame rate does dip frequently, for a game running at 720p you would think they could hold that down better, but I understand the hardware of the wii u isn't amazing by 2017's standards, and the fact that it seems to run so consistently playable across the Wii U and the Switch is a testament to Nintendo giving us Wii U owners one last gem for our console before fading into obscurity. The Menu interface is also a bit tedious at times, as you will open a chest with a weapon in it, only to be told you don't have enough room so the chest closes, you have to open the menu, drop one of the weapons you have, reopen the chest, including the open animation, and then get the item. Those are my two legitimate complaints, this game is very enjoyable, and if you have a Wii U, this is a must own, even if you wait to get it. It runs about as well on the switch.

It's too soon to say it's the best game ever, or one of the best games ever, it hasn't proven it has the staying power "best game ever" needs, (imo) but I can see months or years from now, having that conversation because this is Skyrim done right, in the world of Hyrule and I think most people who like open worlds and Zelda games, and everything in between will find much to enjoy here, while finding few things to really take them out of the experience.

I think that I have put enough time since picking it up to review now. It's very rare that a game I feel so excited about managed to meet and even exceed my expectations. Many will claim that Ocarina of Time was the best Zelda game, II think that I have put enough time since picking it up to review now. It's very rare that a game I feel so excited about managed to meet and even exceed my expectations. While the layout of buttons took some learning since actions were switched from what I'm used to, after two hours I think I can say that it really works. Many will claim that Ocarina of Time was the best Zelda game, I personally held Majora's Mask as my overall favorite and it got me addicted in a way only few games managed to. BOTW has achieved this very same feeling.

With the exception of larger ones, every tree can be damaged, cut down, climbed(all of them can with this), Every bit of grass serves as help for stealth or fire spread. Thunder Storms have a positive, negative and neutral affect. Hinders climbing, benefits stealth, can be an advantage or disadvantage to you or enemies who hold anything metal. There are so many little details in this game in so many areas that I don't have room to fit all of them in this limited review.

Now more than ever does Egorapter's sequelities on ocarina truly shine through with his criticisms that get addressed in this game and prove how much better Breath of the Wild is and stands over the best of the past. I feel like I'm actually in a wild where I have freedom which is on par or greater than how I felt about Skyrim, the sheer amount of combinations and options I have in traversing and combat truly excel this experience to a new bar for me. The Sheikah Slate really shines through with the abilities that it gives as tools you will frequently make use of in your own creative ways to solve puzzle and engage in combat. The game even makes me laugh like when I came across a bokoblin using a wooden Mop against me or another being picked up and hurled at me by a bigger enemy.

Cooking was something I almost never did in Skyrim and yet I find myself more engaged in it here as I feel Nintendo balanced all the survival elements so well. The fact I have died over and over while learning tells that this game is not the breeze that Ocarina of Time up to Skyward Sword could tend to e. I believe this is a game that I could still die on even after playing it for so long. What little issues like frame rate drops are almost complete insignificant to matter at all. This is my new favorite Zelda game and possible in my top 5 list of my favorite games of all time. Being Zelda gets it no bonus points here, Ignoring the title entirely and focusing on it as a game on it's own is what many would call a benchmark. Well done Nintendo. You recreated my Fond Memories of Majora's Mask all over again and bigger and better than it was before.

On top of the Great exploration elements the difficulty feels just right. As someone who loves dark souls the timing with the shield parry and dodging feels great and rewarding for stunning and leaving your foe open and reminds me of that series especially with how easy you can die. Does it reach Dark Soul's Level? Not quite but to be honest I think the level of difficult is just right for this game, it's not too punishing and is pretty fair. due to all the ways you can use the environment to your advantage and the option to flee when you feel you need to.

The climax effect feels effective for actually making the player want to switch up clothing and makes them feel like they matter outside of cosmetic changes and the perks some give are really helpful. like for example I have a bandana that recharges the stamina meter much faster and due to how much i use it that really feels like a benefit I'll keep putting it on to use when I need to. The quests and npcs have not been bugged or plagued by any issues which is a huge relief after all of Skyrim's bugs showing that development time was put to great use for polishing.

The fat I can choose to go about battles in creative ways also increases the replay value. For example I used stasis on an explosive barrel, I pulled out a leaf and struck it a few times sending it hurling off my platform into a treehouse-like fort of bokoblins which blew everyone of them off their feet. This was one of many examples of creativity on how I'd like to attack that I really appreciated that this game gives. The fact you can use the circle bomb and the square bomb separately at the same time and use stasis and Magnesis or any of them together one after the other can create for some great options to. I have the Wii u version as i didn't want to wait for the Switch later this year but I must say I don't feel like it's technically inferior.

There is very few things I can think on that Nintendo course improve on with this new direction. I could give examples like allowing us to set fire to an entire tree fort with bokoblins or being able to cause mud slides with creative things on cliff sides but in the end this is merely N's first game in this new style and that's what new games are for. as for BOTW, I will be playing it for years to come.

I would give my experience so far a 10/10 but the problem I have with this game is the occasional fps slowdowns that I've been experiencing especially when in villages and the game is rendering other humans. It can dip as low as below 20 fps which is really unfortunate and distracting. I am hoping for a patch to fix this if that is ever possible.

Just another modern open world survival element **** game with a half-assed Zelda skin. Not a bad game by any means, but completely average in every way possible. The only thing that makes it stand out is it's lack of game breaking glitches that plagues the market today. Unfortunately you're forced to play it on one of many awful controllers, so there's that to deal with...

That being said, after putting 80 hours into this game (with still around 25 shrines to go) I can easily say that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, has taken over as my personal favourite game of all time.

The first thing I loved about this game was that there was no bs. Within a minute you are fully into the game. This is something I hate about modern games, since I have an extremely low attention span. The second thing I loved is that even though the Great Plateau is meant to be a tutorial area, it doesn't feel like it in the slightest. That was another thing I dislike about modern games (especially Skyward Sword) was that they baby you too much. Not this game, and I loved every second of it. Usually I cannot stand when a game does too much hand holding or too much story/exposition. But this game understood that it should be more about the GAME then the BACKSTORY. They didn't have to tell me why I should defeat Ganon for 30 hours like in previous Zeldas, they just showed me an image of Ganon in Hyrule and that was more than enough of a motivator.

Now I'm sure some people like more story heavy vs. game play heavy games (like Uncharted, Until Dawn, Skyward Sword), but for me personally I much enjoy as little story as possible, which is possibly why I loved this game so much. It is--not trying to sound too cliche--the game of my dreams.

That being said, I played it on the Wii U, and had a fantastic experience. From everything I've seen the Switch version is not THAT much better and even though this game is unbelievably fun, I think you shouldn't waste the money on a Switch, between all the problems it's having and the lack of games, it makes sense to wait a year to pick it up.

In conclusion, in my personal opinion this game is a masterclass in open-world design and in elevating the game play over the narrative. My only complaint is that I wish there was more, but that's more of a compliment than a complaint, and so I give this game a 10.

I was very disappointed after playing Skyward Sword (the last 3d Zelda game released) which threw away almost every thing I loved about the series and was afraid that this game would fail my expectations. I could not have been anymore wrong.

The only bad thing I can think of is that the game sometimes the game has frame rate issues which is more of a problem with the hard ware rather than the game itself, but if you can look past them you'll be in for an experience that you will never forget nor ever have again

I'll admit, I'm in the minority, but I personally don't care much for open world games, and I don't like RPG's. I do love Zelda though. Ocarina of Time is the best game of all time, and Link's last outing in a Link Between Worlds was nothing short of pure genius. I even liked Skyward Sword a lot. But those games were about varied gameplay and puzzle solving. In prior Zelda's there were constantly new items and abilities that would change the gameplay. Getting the hookshot didn't just change where you could go but it changed how you could solve puzzles, how you could travel, and how you could fight in a way that made the game feel slightly different once you got the hookshot. There isn't that varied gameplay in this entry. There's something to be said for having all your abilities available so soon in the game and being able to travel wherever you want immediately, but they did sacrifice gameplay variation for this. From start to finish the gameplay never really changes or is varied much, and that is very different from any other Zelda. I did mention earlier that I like puzzle solving elements of Zelda games, and that is what is very good about this game. Previous Zelda's often only had one way to solve a puzzle, this games unique physics engine has made it so you can solve a puzzle in a variety of ways. That is very cool. But it takes 35 minutes to traverse to the puzzle because along the way you break 1 shield and 3 swords, have to cook 3 meals and die Dark Souls style 4 times from random enemy camps. This thing is a time pit, and not in a way that I like. Skyward Sword had varying temples and lands that were very artistically inspired. Breath of the Wild is inspired not by art, but by nature. And I can understand that appeal, but the flashy, highly stylized and varying elements of Skyward Sword appealed to me a lot more. I wanted to like this game, but I'm nearing the end I just haven't found it as enjoyable as any Zelda I've played before it. A miss from Nintendo in my book. Expand

I recognize its weaknesses, such as the lack of music, mediocre storytelling and voice acting, and simplistic combat (with insanely easy bosses). But none of that really bothered me because exploring is just so fun in this game.
The experience reminded me of MGSV, where I think the gameplay carries the game. In my opinion games should not be reviewed on how well rounded it is, but on how well it executes what it sets out to do.

Yep, that's pretty much the reason I didn't give it a perfect 10; the soundtrack is so subtle on the Wii U, it may as well not exist (it just feels louder on Switch). But let's move away from comparisons; and with that, I mostly mean "FPS" whining. You will not find that here. I bought a Wii U because I like games as a form of entertainment, not a replacement of reality; I am not looking to escape reality in amazing 60fps-4K glory. So let's move on. (and if that's not a good reason for you, I respect your need to escape... this game is not for you)

This is by far the best game on the Wii U, and wonderful "swan song" to the console. The farewell to the console reminds me of Twilight Princess on the GameCube. After Wind Waker initially disappointed some hardcore Ocarina of Time-Majora's Mask fans, Twilight Princess redeemed the light that was WW with a lot of darkness. So where does Breath of the Wild (BotW) fit between two remakes and a spin-off (Hyrule Warriors)? Perfectly after Skyward Sword.

So then, my impressions after more than 10 hours playing, which isn't a lot for this game (think Skyrim playtimes and you'll get it):

Soundtrack: Sweet. Tender. Subtle. For the first time, a Zelda game places its focus on environment before music, and though, for a music lover like me, it was sad.. this is actually quite in tune with games like Witcher 3 (from which it takes a few elements). Do not expect to be awed by the soundtrack unless you play with headphones.

Story: This game is FREEer than Skyrim, and so is the story. Yes, you read that right. The open world model for this game is a combination of Skyrim and Witcher 3. Your heart containers, your equipment, your stamina, and your.... food dishes?....... are what keep you from going wherever you may please. You may want to go up to that really high peak because, heck, "throat of the world, baby!" but that's not going to happen with that thin shirt and pants, and that pot-lid-for-a-shield and rusted blade... and the baked apple you stole from that old guy. Sure... you can sneak, but when night time comes, good luck with the 172HP goblins and your little twig that does 1 damage. As with all Zelda games, there are too many sidequests to count. Oh wait... that's not what Zelda is known for. Well, looks like now, it will be. Say goodbye to a series where the only sidequests were grabbing bugs or taking frogs that could spoil to a witch living behind a village.

Controls and AI: This can be challenging with so much going on. Thankfully, some of the cool mechanics, like stopping in midair to shoot an arrow (as seen in first preview trailer of game) and being able to fast travel at any time (ANY TIME... hear that Bethesda???) help tremendously in the fight against the darkness. I place AI in the same category because this is something not often talked about. The AI in this game is one of the most advanced I've ever seen in any open-world RPG or Adventure game. A huge part of whether you make it out alive in an encounter or not, will be based on how well you know your controls and your on-hand-equipment/abilities. That being said, at no time do the controls feel difficult/unmanageable, or like a failed experiment and excuse for selling new peripherals (looking at you Skyward Sword, with your bs MotionPlus).

Longevity.... I'm pretty sure people who put value to what they spend money on, will be spending the rest of the year - until Christmas - switching between BotW and Horizon ZD (if they own a PS4). This game has so much going on, you begin to stop wondering how far you've gotten... and well, it doesn't tell you.

Tips and Advice: If you do not own a Switch (or won't own one for a while) and DO own a Wii U, Purchase this game. This game, along with a handful of others, is the reason you bought a Wii U to begin with, and sighed twice for those HD remakes...

If you own the game and have just started or not gone too far, do your best to NEVER look online for walkthrough help. This game deserves it, and you will enjoy it more. When you use walkthroughs in free-roam games, you are virtually placing your game "on rails." So what's the point?

Last thoughts: This game is clearly a rebirth to the series, as many other franchises have been "rebirthing" (Tomb Raider, God of War, etc). Consider this game as a brand new experience, and you will love it. Look for the past in it, and you may be disappointed. It's really a matter of one simple choice: to allow yourself to be surprised by something that turned out different than you, and the rumor mill, expected.

As a Zelda fan, I consider Breath of the Wild a good game but it's not as perfect as most reviewers say because:

    1. Poor acting choices (Zelda)

If you decide to include a few (and just a few) voices in the game just do it right! Zelda has always been one of my favourite characters since Ocarina of Time. She was mysterious, daring and somehow cool. I'm so disappointed with her ridiculously trembling voice that no one can believe nor take seriously.

There are a few other issues with the game but Zelda's voice is something that could have been chosen right easily!

    2. Frustrating climbing

It rains a lot in Breath of the Wild and whenever it rains, you can't climb. It's that simple. I was stuck on an island with no shrines around and no way to make fire but I wanted to explore it anyway. All I could do was wait a long while until I was able to climb to keep checking the island. Another good example is when you are near the top of the mountain and then it starts raining and you fall all the way down. Lovely! To make things worse, 90% of the terrain requires climbing.

    3. Disappointing dungeons (including the mystical ones)

I firmly believe that they are the worst in the series. Mostly, they are superficial and gimmicky.

    4. Awkward inventory system

You have to eat food to restore hearts and stamina in a pause menu which feels very awkward to do while climbing and fighting. Also, all weapons break easily so you have to hold right to open the weapons menu and select another weapon in the middle of almost every single fight, which literally breaks the action.

    5. Technical issues (choppy frame rate and game freezing)

Noticeable technical issues don't make a good game bad but they are detrimental to the enjoyment of the game, period.

    6. Visuals are good and bad

Some places look quite good, like the beaches and sea, while other places look not exactly pointillist but just blurry a la Skyward Sword.

    7. Music (where?)

Seriously, where's the music? All you are going to hear most of the time is some short harmonies (no, it's not your phone's notifications) or background sounds. And why did they replace the old ranch music with the new and much worse one? Zora's music is still awesome but it's drowned in the water and can hardly be heard.

    Conclusion

I still like the game quite much regardless of its issues but after over 80 hours I can't see why it should be considered the best Zelda game ever. Reviewers will admit this eventually, once enough time has passed by. There are a few articles daring to say so already. I think some hidden Switch marketing is the reason for many websites to crown Breath of the Wild. Nevertheless, it's a good game that is so overrated.

Want to follow the main quest tracker? Go ahead. Want to find out what that giant flying thing is way off in the distance? Run for it! Want to try storming the final boss right off the bat? Sure, good luck! There is so much freedom in this game, and with only a small handful of exceptions, you can go anywhere right off the bat. Only once or twice have I found a challenge that required me to complete something in the main story first to unlock its secret.

As for the main story, I absolutely loved it. I want to keep this review spoiler free, so I won't go into the details of the story itself, but there were times where I started tearing up and considered making my assault on the final boss before finishing the rest of the story. I loved all the main cast of characters. They each had their own personality that made them distinct, and I even appreciated the one character that got on my nerves due to their attitude towards the events of the story and towards Link himself.

The gameplay is actually pretty unique for a Zelda game. They have improved on every aspect of combat and exploration in the series. At first, I was a little concerned that your weapons, shields, and bows all had durability, but it actually helps overall. You have to go into each fight with a strategy. You have to think about your inventory and decide whether it's worth fighting that pack of bokoblins for what could be in that chest or if you'll end up worse for wear due to the encounter. If you're skilled enough to perform some of the more advanced combat techniques (which the game will teach you if you explore enough and find the correct shrines), you can go into combat with some more confidence, as long as you know you've got weapons that will last the encounter. There's also so many small details about how Link interacts with the environment that makes everything that much more enjoyable. You have to think about what you're wearing when entering certain environments or weather conditions. Wooden items will combust in the extreme heat, and metal items will conduct electricity in thunderstorms. Enemies are also much smarter than in previous games, which in turn makes the game that much more difficult. I normally pride myself on completing Zelda games with zero deaths, especially in the titles that keep track of how many times you see the Game Over screen. In my first time through the game, which took about 30-35 hours of play over the course of the first week of release of the game, I actually lost count of how many times I died. This game is not easy, but I will argue that it is fair, and that there are no deaths that seemed to come out of nowhere. I knew that trying to climb a tower protected by super-powerful Guardians would require a good amount of skill, but I never expected to die 10 or more times trying to climb it, only to keep failing and opt to attempt it another time.

Graphically, this game is beautiful. I absolutely love the art style of the game. While the resolution of the game is only 720p at 30 FPS, I never minded that. To me, visuals should enhance and enrich the gameplay and story, and this title does that perfectly. Each of the landscapes is beautiful and fun to explore. The shrines are a very unique style that is so completely different from the rest of the world that they really stand out. The character animations are all fun and charming. It's very clear when Link is out of his element and needs to change outfits due to the climate. It's just fun to get lost in the world and see what sorts of environments or landscapes you can find.

This game does have some flaws, however. I've encountered a few places where I encountered some very bad framerate drops, especially in combat. These were very few and far-between, however, and I wouldn't put that against the final score. One other thing I saw was a couple of soft-locks when things did not load appropriately. This only happened twice to me, and one was actually quite funny, because a character did not load for a cutscene, and their dialog did not appear in turn, causing Link to stand around unable to do anything while the rest of the environment moved around him. A reset of the game put me back into a save about 30 seconds before the cutscene, and the character appeared appropriately this time.

Overall, Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games to come out in the past decade. It really brought me back to the memories I had growing up playing the original Legend of Zelda, and a return to the open format that helped inspire so many open world games we have now. This is easily a 10/10.

It has been a long wait, but it was certainly worth it. Breath of the Wild isn't like any other Zelda game, it has similarities to the original Zelda on the NES. Hyrule itself is massive, a vast open plain ready to be explored. It has to be one of the biggest areas of land in any Zelda game ever, it may even be bigger than other open world games.

That's not to say the game is perfect, it does have its flaws. In the WiiU and Switch versions, frame rate can be an issue. And so can the camera at times. And, as this game was built on the WiiU, the 2nd screen is absent on the Switch version.

If you have a WiiU, I'd get Breath of the Wild on that system. It gives the console a fond farewell, and also saves you £280. In my opinion, there is no need to get a Switch just for Zelda.

I can't tell you how many times I've had my jaw drop at something I accidentally stumbled upon and just went "what is that? WHAT IS THAT?!?" It's probably been over half a decade since I've felt so addicted to a game. While I would have liked more character development for the four champions, Zelda herself is more well-developed than any character in any of the previous Zelda games. Nintendo really made an amazing character with her. She's multidimensional, she has multiple character arcs, and it's all presented in such a creative way. They even give Link some character development, in a way. You would think that giving Link personality would ruin the character, since he's supposed to be the silent, "blank slate" protagonist that people project themselves onto. But once again, it's done so smartly that it does wonders for the character's likability. All-in-all, an absolutely amazing game. I look forward to seeing how Nintendo tries to top this one. Expand

The Shrines can bring tonnes of fun if your a fan of the dungeons in Zelda
You can take pictures of all the great in-game places
Shield surf down a mountain until you succeed
    Find all the mini bosses
Excellent combat system in that weapons break not allowing you to use the same strat over and over
I think stamina is a great way of making sure people don't break the game from the get go
    WORLD IS HUGE
And this game does let you go where ever you want to go with limits like for example, you can go and fight the final boss with a stick and nothing else, you will likely die and the stick will break but you can still do it
There is also no order to the story of this game it isn't linear at all you don't even have to participate in the story of this game to win (all though I recommend participation) you can do the dungeons in any order and those who complain that this game is bad for having 4 dungeons, this is my question for you. Have you played Majoras Mask?

I highly recommend this game and will give it a 10/10
You should definitely get this game and experience it for yourself because that is the honest to god best way to play this game is on your own and without someone telling you where to go and what to do

So after playing the game over the past week and finally beating it, I think I can finally give my full opinion on this game.

For starters, this game is about breaking traditional boundaries in the Zelda series and giving the player near endless amounts to explore, do, and find. It accomplishes this goal pretty darn well, besides some areas that felt somewhat empty, I found myself constantly sidetracked from an initial goal only to remember 30 minutes later that I had been collecting Rushrooms to deal for some cold hard rupees. Jokes aside, the expansive and detailed world has tons to do and many varying environments to explore, find items, and loot in.

Old school fans can feel right at home with the traditional Zelda style puzzles, hidden treasures, and despite the game only having 4 "main dungeons", the 120 shrines scattered around Hyrule for players to find and solve varying puzzles using the new Runes mechanic definitely challenged my puzzle solving capabilities on some occasions.

My few gripes about this game come from some odd gameplay choices from the developers, such as my slight problem with how fast weapons break. Despite the fact that the game throws weapons at you constantly, I personally found a few weapons I preferred and wished they could last longer on the battlefield. Another problem I had with combat was how little diversity there was in weapon attacks and animations. I felt like greatswords at least should have their own attacks instead of being lumped in a category of just "2-handed weapons" along with clubs and the like. Also I had hoped that there would be more quicktime / slo-motion attack options after a perfect dodge instead of mashing Y for a flurry strike.

In other departments there are the frame drops that many others have mentioned which I encountered fairly frequently here on my Wii U version, but this sort of thing will bother some people more than others. Also the sound design felt empty in a lot of places, with only a few faint piano notes as background music. I know the devs said they focused on this ambient sound to accentuate the environments, but I felt like it didn't fit the gameworld in some instances. (The main game theme, however, is amazing)

My other main gripe is a small lack of that heavy story-driven feel that gave life to many games in the series' history. Without getting into spoilers, I personally never felt too invested in the narrative since many of the cast of characters players will meet get lackluster screen time and development.

Overall, my smallish gripes with some gameplay and story features are easily forgiven by the sheer amount of adventure and genuine fun I had exploring Hyrule, hunting and cooking meals, solving dungeons and shrines, finding treasure, collecting strong gear, and fighting tough enemies. I would easily recommend this game to any Zelda fan new or old, hardcore or casual, as it is simply a great experience.

    My score: 8.5 (rounded up to 9) / 10

It's a good game. Not a 10 though, unless you are a fanboy.

What makes this game good is it's gameplay. Surely a 10 in that regard. A game of this size and length needs, at least imho, also a story to keep you invested. In that regard Zelda is only mediocre. Graphic wise it's also just in an average territory. Not that I would rate graphics too high in a rpg though. Overall I think

That also means that I played for a week before I realized the game has stock Zelda tropes like faeries and dungeons.
I was too busy taking weapons from enemies I should have been too weak to beat to actually play the main storyline. I was shocked to discover the game had -people- in it after I stopped goofing around and finished the initial tutorial. The game is that vast. It makes previous games in the series look paltry in comparison. And the crazy thing is, there's still something to do around almost every corner. The game is rife with sidequests, collectibles, heck, just unlocking the visible area on the map is a challenging, nuanced game of its own.
Luckily you're allowed to teleport to a set of unlockable "shrines" once you've visited one. This helps make the game world more navigable, and it can also get you out of tough situations.
Multiple complex systems like the map or cooking potions and meals from field ingredients work almost seamlessly together. I started to think seriously about the economics of breaking my sword to finish a quest and get an item. Is it worth it to throw out a weapon for this reward? How valuable is it? You can tell the game's creators somehow put as much thought into the environments as the creatures, people and items in them.
The save anywhere system suits the game well. You have one manual save and about 5 auto-saves that trigger when you do something like open a chest or enter a new area. I've found myself taking risks and backtracking to my manual save when the end result wasn't worth it. The auto-saves are well-timed and pretty forgiving, but you can't get too comfortable with only them. At least once, my auto-save loaded me into a den of monsters way too strong for me to fight that also just killed me.
The frequency of death is kind of fun. I've found myself losing battles, then starting over and winning without taking a hit. The diverse amount of strategy can involve stealth, environmental attacks like exploding barrels or pushing boulders, putting distance between your enemies or just running up and swinging the sword wildly.
While it was presented as the first Zelda with voice acting, speech is pretty scarce, even in scripted events in the main story. The few characters who have spoken lines often revert back to text-only dialogue with a default laugh or grunt playing over the speakers. They could just as easily have done no voices at all and the game would not have lost much.
The missing gamepad features are a big loss, and the constant blinking of the gamepad screen is a distraction, but after a while, you give in. Some losses are egregious (I had to type using an analog stick for the first time ever on wii u) and some are merely inconvenient. A gamepad map would have been perfect for this game, and it existed in an early trade show demo. Navigating the inventory is clunky (you overshoot the section you wanted at least half the time); some touch features would have been helped immensely. Nevertheless, the game is so immersive that you overlook these minor flaws.
Everything works together like a big, enjoyable organism. I keep finding myself miles away from a task I intended to complete an hour ago because I was distracted by something interesting that I stumbled upon. I frankly can't put it down. It's so immersive that I get annoyed when it rains because I can't climb as well, and joyous when I stumble on an item I need. It has sucked me in for dozens of hours and I'm quite happy to let it.

The physic and attention to detail is groundbreaking. I remember playing FF15 and noticed the water surface became frozen when you cast ice magic, that if Noctis was standing on the water, he couldn't move for a while coz his feet were planted on the ice. BotW took it to a whole new level.

Breath of the Wild doesn't hold the player's hand through the experience, you're free to go where ever you want.
That said, through the incredibly well thought out and subtle game design, Nintendo still manages to guide a player through to make good choices and gives the player almost imperceptibly subtle nudges in the right direction to keep the player moving forward towards areas of the world that will provide a challenge, but not overwhelm the player.

If ever there was a game that shows how impeccable Nintendo can cater to an incredibly large demographic, while providing a game that focuses on removing dull elements and adds in everything that makes other open world games enjoyable and merge it with the puzzle solving and unique world interactions only Zelda titles offer, you get the crowning achiemevents that steers focus towards empowering the player with exciting and interesting interactions, while placing far less emphasis on uninteresting video game tropes like photorealistic graphics or icons and arrows on the horizon leading the player directly where they need to go.

Nintendo shows that they truly are the greatest video game developers in the world.

I watched a youtube video a while ago, it explains that each event is spread out by exactly 40 seconds. That source of praise for some is probably a large part of why I hate the game. The game survives by using it's metronome like action to turn you into a mindless zombie. Because of it the exploration is not fun, it's just easy to lose track of time doing it.

The main reasons this series gets undue praise is that it's absorbing and big. Both act to the detriment of the game.

Continuing with the absorbing nature of the game, the pacing of 40 seconds actually acts to the detriment of the exploration. Dead space is important, and constantly spacing things out by roughly 40 seconds means there is no dead space. Everything is routine. Furthermore the content that you come across every 40 seconds is not of any value. There rare things that do have value are often pointed to directly by waypoints.

This leads me to my next point, the world is big but vapid. There's not enough dead space in the game, but you could also say the majority of the game is dead space. There's so much stuff in the game but almost none of it has any merit. Exploration only works if there's something to find, and the few worthwhile things I found do not make it worth wading through the hours and hours of worthless things to find.

That's most of my criticism for the game, the core gameplay isn't fun because the finding of things in regular intervals lulls you into a trance that makes you not cognisant of the environment and there's just nothing of value to find.

Aside from that THE ENDING SUCKED. Nobody of their right mind could like that ending, an easy bossfight makes all the work of freeing the divine beasts feel redundant and afterwards you're greeted with a second boss-fight that barely surpasses a cut-scene in difficulty.

Princess Zelda gets next to no characterisation despite me hearing praise for her character repeatedly, and honestly development for her would be far better rewards for exploration than a shrine. That said, what bits of development we do get are also terrible. They're barely better than her staring at the camera and explaining "oh boy do I feel like a failure because I haven't been able to summon the power of the goddess". If we were given a lot more cutscenes that were less direct about it, it would've made her into a far more compelling character.

The shrines are complete garbage, I'm literally looking at a review that calls them "fun". The biggest challenge in the shrines is sitting through the loading screen at each end.

Every town is marked on the map, making stumbling upon them impossible and they're most of what's worth finding.

Your horse is basically never around (unless you buy the DLC) making traversing long empty fields a pain. It'd be great if we could mount a large wolf-like creature that'll follow us up cliffs.

Your powers don't start recharging until you've used up all three charges and don't progress any further even if you use the in-game time-passing functionality.

All in all I regret my time with BOTW. Lame exploration, lame world, lame story, lame shrines (which add up to about 8 hours of my 70 hours in game), lame Princess Zelda, lame horse, lame experience. There are a few quests in the game that work, and a few divine-beast related cutscenes and I really like that each town has it's own musical theme but that's not enough to carry a 70 hour game that isn't fun.

Positives: The flexibility, beauty, and game playing is fantastic., class leading. Just the whole game experience and how it has all come together is just brilliant, and most importantly fun! I find myself getting distracted a lot from my original goal, but after over 60 hours of play, I'm still enjoying it and still have plenty to do. I would say based on shrine and boss completion I'm about half way through the game, and I'm still discovering new things.

Negatives: Some have complained about frame rate issues, I've only run into a slow down moment once in the 60 hours of play, and they has included some pretty intense gameplay or graphically demanding areas. So, seems fine to me? That is more or less my only complaint. The only other minor niggle is that sometimes it can take a bit of time going through the inventory and dropping weapons you don't want to pick up a better one, some sort of hot swap mechanism built into a patch would be great.

NPC also changes their reactions to current weather, making them more dynamic.
The music is excellent executed, appearing just when it should to be, and dungeons were nicely updated.
Maybe the main story is not as strong good as in Ocarina Of Time, but it makes you play the game until the end.
This game is one of those that you have to try if you really like video games.

I've died so many times in so many different ways and each time it was cool.

I would think that running through a big open field would be boring but they make sure that, even hidden in the grass, there are all sorts of useful things or I never noticed that pinwheel on that stump there. What is that? What does it do? I'll put a star by it and come back later. How do i get up there? I never tried climbing to the top of that before and, sure enough, there's a 10 things i discover on the climb and something at the top!

If you don't discover something hidden, or a puzzle, or treasure at an unexplored area then you will discover 10 on the way there.

What do these do? This looks interesting. Next thing you know it's coming to life and trying to kill you! RUN!

I'm not going to go too much into detail, because I still highly recommend this game. It's a great remaster of the Zelda franchise, and it brings back many memories from the other classic Zelda games.

The world of BotW is massive and beautiful. At first, I was worried that the open-world aspect of the game would make it feel empty, but instead I found that it is jam packed with detail. Everywhere you look there are small details, unique npcs, side-quests and interesting secrets to find.

Graphically, the game matches its amazing world design. BotW is the culmination of 30+ years of game design and it really shows. Every area of the world is unique and the incredible use of graphics technology turns everything you look into an amazing view. LOD pop-in isn't very noticeable, and the way grass is rendered and moves when you run through it is great. Unfortunately, all of this taxes the Wii U, and the console frequently throttles down to 20fps in certain areas. I'm looking forward to playing this game 10 years down the road, when Nintendo remasters it on a 4k console.

The largest failure was the disappearance of traditional dungeons in BotW. The Divine Beasts aren't enough of a challenge and aren't long enough, to be considered 'dungeons'. At least, not in the classical Zelda definition of a dungeon. In every Zelda game, you could always count on delving into amazingly detailed and designed dungeons, with interesting and challenging puzzles and bosses. BotW fails miserably here. The development time that could have gone into making epic dungeons was spent on small single-puzzle 'Shrines' that pose almost no challenge. I hope that the future DLC will be focused on bringing back epic dungeons, because without them this game only feels like half a Zelda game.

Overall, I love this game, but I wish Nintendo would have slowed down, and taken a little more time to develop it. I also wish they had hardware powerful enough to run this game at 1080p. I'm looking forward to the DLC, and I hope that patches can fix the fps drop issues.

    also
it has a lot of sadness, and a lot of funny moments aswell,
link is a character that feels like he gives a **** and zelda is also very much an alive character,
the other characters have rich story behind them, and in total they are interesting,
looking at you sidon and mipha, god i they are so fking adorable,
    well what next
    the story,
the story is good, and as already said, its sad, you feel for the characters, and holy hell i felt two or three times like i could give a **** myself,... i mean you find it rly sad when you see their fate, how things turned out, i mean you basicly lost everything, and you realize how poor ass link realizes that more or less too,
you also have a great overworld, and dozents of shrines, some are even hidden behind puzzles,
like a maze, escort, golf, and so on,
sometimes you see a dungeon and think, crap,... how do i beat this now, and then after you find one solution that might not even be the intendet one, you think either, man i am awesome, OR man i am retardet,...
    overall,
    the game is just cool,
and yeah you even have mechanics from metroid now in this game, like the scanning, its now photographs, and you can read little things about the stuff you have a photo,
and in generall, the tools can be used in a schocking ammount of ways, IF you put some time into it,

i guess my review is a bit weard, but trust me,
    if you like zelda,
    or
    open world,
nintendo typ games ( yeah i think nintendo is kinda unique)
if you like a game in which the world feels interesting,
    or survival

The world is massive, with something new to see or do around every corner. There are imaginative monsters scattered throughout the beautiful land of Hyrule, some of which require unique tactics to overcome. Occasionally, you will even run into an enemy base that you can conquer to obtain treasure. Next there are the shrines, which basically serve as miniature dungeons that you can find isolated across the map. The game smartly rewards you for discovering them, as you can then fast travel back to a previously registered shrine whenever you want to. Once you've completed the puzzle(s) a shrine has to offer, you are presented with a spirit orb that will allow you to increase your health or stamina after you have 4 of them. On top of that, the puzzles themselves were typically fun and inventive without too much unnecessary backtracking. On the other hand, the Temples/Divine Beasts of this game were usually pretty long, while still managing to retain the cleverness seen in the shrines. The one exception to this would have to be the Gerudo Temple, as it could be somewhat difficult to tell how your actions effected the Divine Beast itself. Not to mention that I encountered a few texture glitches here, causing me to fall inside a rock pillar on top of the Beast's back end. Another slightly frustrating quest in this game would have to be the Yiga Clan Hideout. While I liked the idea of having to sneakily distract the guards, I found it to be a bit more tedious than it should have been. The main thing was that you couldn't save your progress at all here, and since there were two rooms you had to go through, it got really annoying to have to traverse through the first portion again and again after getting caught. A simple solution would be to patch in an autosave feature that activates after the player gets through the first room, hopefully making this location a lot less repetitive than it is now. Still, these are just minor blemishes on a game that I have enjoyed almost every second of, and it's without a doubt worth every penny you'll end up spending on it. Expand

TL;DR buy a Wii U or Switch for the game. It's worth it.

Graphics: 10/10. Perhaps not the most *technically impressive* graphics ever featured in a video game, but absolutely the most beautiful I've seen, even at 720p/30fps (with drops to 20fps, but the "oh noes it sux" for frame drops are drastically overstated). It looks like a masterfully rendered Gouache landscape painting in every frame. Yes, you can get much, much higher detail levels with a high end camera in the hands of a teenager who doesn't know what makes a good photo, but you'd hardly call it beautiful next to a classic French landscape oil-painted masterpiece. And this game is a masterpiece of artwork. Not just straight-up graphics, but the scenery design frames landmarks and points of interest wonderfully from vantage points.

Moment-to-moment gameplay: 10/10. It's a huge world and thus the density of "stuff" isn't going to be very high. But that's kind of the point. I see that thing there, I want to get there. How do I get there? You've got choices. Find a nearby high point and jump down with the paraglider. See if you can scale it directly (almost every surface allows you to climb it directly, limited only by a generous stamina bar, which can be supplemented with food for virtually infinite climbing). See if there's another way around without climbing. (and there often is). Going downhill? Ride your shield like a snowboard.

Combat: 10/10. Since becoming an adult, I've never played a Zelda game besides the original and its dark horse sequel where I died in normal combat outside of boss fights. But in this game, I'm getting my butt kicked over and over and over . . . and still coming back for more. And unlike other games with "difficult" combat, it's not frustrating and it never, ever feels cheap. There are cleanly denoted rules about how fighting works, and no enemies ever pull moves without giving a clue in their animations about what exactly they're going to do. You have well defined choices, and lots of them at that. Try to make a break for it, attempt to block or parry, attempt to dodge just in time in order to open up a flurry rush attack, check for options in the environment that can drastically change the combat (i.e. detonate explosive barrels . . . which incidentally doesn't work when it's raining . . . or pick up metal parts with Magnesis ability and swap between slamming enemies with it and using it to block movement), try dropping bombs into their encampments, try throwing your nearly-broken weapons for critical hits at a distance, etc.

Story: I haven't completed it yet so can't give a number rating, but so far it's engaging. Since the game offers complete freedom to do things in any order you want, a lot of the narrative comes through recovering lost memories.

    Other notes:

I miss the classic "Zelda Music" that usually sets the franchise apart from everything else. The music instilled a sense of adventure into the games. But in this one, the sense of adventure comes from within, and from the beautiful landscape over this big beautiful world.

Weapons are a consumable. This frustrates many people. I see it as a big positive in two ways, though -- since the game offers complete freedom, it prevents the player from obtaining an end game weapon and making the rest of the game too easy, and it makes a huge change in how you approach conflict.

The thing that sets this apart from every other open world game is that it's designed around physics systems. It isn't a game of finding locks and keys, where the lock happens to be big blocks, distant switches, high ledges with grapple points etc. and the keys are, respectively, a power bracelet, a projectile weapon and a grappling projectile, etc.. It has complete physics systems that make their way into normal play. A chopped down tree will float down a river, and you can stand on the tree for a makeshift raft. Round bombs roll down hills. You roll rocks or logs to mow down enemies downhill. You freeze time on an object and impacts add up, essentially allowing you to play golf with boulders. Fire spreads organically in the omniabundant grass, will be blown around by the wind and will create updrafts to lift you into the air with your paraglider. And then the weather changes and all of a sudden you need a different set of strategies because climbing and fire don't work in the rain, metal weapons and armor will get you struck by lightning, and wood will burn in volcanic heat. After you get decimated in standard combat over and over, you'll start looking around at the environment and realizing that there are dozens of possible approaches, and all of them are better than treating it like your regular adventure game.

The trial shrines are mostly very entertaining to solve. I'm personally rather dissatisfied with the motion control ones, though those might interest others. The single boss/ancient battle I have partaken in was very well choreographed, challenging and fun. Vah Rutah and all it entailed kept me on my toes the whole time.
The mount system is very interesting, what other game has you break in your mount? That is unless you demount a monstrous rider and steal his horse like I did.
The fact that you can do that, is amazing, and a credit to the positivity of the game, it doesn't limit you artificially, the only limit on you in this game is you.

This is the first Zelda game I play and it has left me interested in playing some of the older ones.

Best game I ever played. The graphics are not realistic but this is a very different art style and for me it is better. Sure it does not look as realistic but it looks incredibly beautiful. I need to check out more Zelda games as I have a new favorite. The open world is incredible and the music is some of the best.

The frame-rate drops aren't that noticeable but one issue is freezing, it only last like three quarters of a second but can get a bit annoying when in a heated battle.
Weapon durability can be annoying at times but adds this quest almost to find and take weapons from enemies or chests to use against them.
The story is amazing with many compelling characters it makes the story whole. Yes there are parts with mediocre voice acting but there's also really good voice acting like from Rivalli or Urbosa, their voices were done really well and never seemed flat.
I also loved to see the characters that I grew up loving, like Impa playing a semi-large role in the game.
This game deserves every bit of hype it got and is definitely 10/10

I tried this game quickly and I really don't understand people saying that the graphics are beautiful. I know it's hard to criticize Zelda games but if it shouldn't be really. If you love something you want it improved. And you have it improved by removing the flaws.

Some flaws I have found that retract a point from a game that would be easily a 10/10 without them:

    1. There is opportunity for excessive grinding. That is not bad per se, because it is purely optional, however, it is not made very clear to the player themselves that the grinding is purely optional. As a result it may take you about 40-50% of the game length at least until you realize "hey, I don't have to actually grind everything", if you are not into that kind of thing (of completism).

    2. The Z/L-Targetting system of Zeldas is still quite imperfect. Since Ocarina Of Time, it offered opportunity both to be easy to use but also to be clunky. Sadly, even in 2017 this problem has not been completely eliminated. Certain enemies might not be targeted exactly as the player intended or they may lose focus unintentionally. The optimal way to use it is to use it too delicately for its own good.

    3. The avoidance mechanic has a flaw which is not apparent at first. While technically it is flawless, it is in practice, because it depends on the animations of the actual enemies. As a result you may either misjudge how you need to dodge an attack without being necessarily your fault, or learn every animation and its response in the game by heart which is not usually fun.

All in all the game still gets a 9 out of 10 of course. It is way better than 90%+ of games out there. But if you don't see its faults the series may devolve into being worse.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a fun new entry into the Zelda series that remarkably departs from the formula set by the other 3D games. Though many choices have been questionable, the overall experience is one of quality.

In BotW, there are no more dungeons. Instead you have around 120 shrines (which are just puzzle rooms), four divine beasts, and Hyrule Castle. Hyrule Castle is the closes the game has to a legitimate dungeon, and even in that respect it falls flat. The divine beasts function more as a large puzzle with a boss at the end. So if you play Zelda for their fantastic dungeons, you'll be disappointed.

Combat was hit or miss, often you're fighting the camera. You see, your hops are relative to your position and the camera angle. Holding back on the stick won't do a backflip, you have to hold toward's Link's back. In certain fights, this becomes a frustration as the camera angle rapidly changes making that back hop you were planning on doing become a side hop, causing your dodge to fail. Other than camera issues, the actual combat itself, and the freedom allowed within it are refreshing. Your runes have many creative combat uses, the environment can change how certain elements react (like rain making lightning more potent), and allowing the player to jump whenever allows one to easily close gaps with a leap or make use of higher ground more easily.

Combat brings along the worst part of the game. Durability. In BotW everything you use (weapons, bows, shields) has durability. Unfortunately, weapons last a grand total of no time before they break and you're left fumbling through the menu to grab another. Not even the Master Sword is free from this, use it too much and it'll be "depleted of energy" and you'll have to wait for it to recharge. The biggest issue all this creates is that you'll never ever want to use any cool weapon you pick up, because you'll be afraid it'll break, and by the time you'd ever need to use it.. Well, you're now at the final boss and the Master Sword is all ready to go then.

BotW unfortunately has a major issue with fps. It seems to use double buffering vsync, if it can't maintain 30, then it immediately bumps down to 20 as the next stable target. In normal running around and exploring, this is mostly fine. But, the minute you enter combat or a town, things start chugging. Towns consistently run 15-20 fps, and fighting is all over the place. You can have 50 fights fine, and then the next will have multiple freezes as the Wii U tries to figure out what "stable framerate" means. Given the dev time, and the fact that BotW was developed for the Wii U first, this is completely unacceptable. They should've held stable framerate above visuals.

Despite these questionable decisions and technical issues, the overarching gameplay is great. BotW has one of the best sandbox set-ups out there. Literally everything is up for you to discover. While they do use the Ubisoft tower approach, you actually have to find things from the tower, rather than have towers spew out the entire map with store, objective, secret, and brothel locations, This gives BotW an organic method to discovery. On top of that, the vistas and environment are beautiful when the framerate is stable. Enemy animations and AI are top notch, with enemies learning your tricks and trying to use them against you (such as kicking bombs back at you). The armor system is nice, allowing a customization look.

Voice acting makes its first foray into Zelda, and is hit and miss. The VA's for the King, Urbosa, Daruk, and Rivali are pretty good, while Zelda and Mipha's VA's are very meh. The soundtrack, when it plays, is fantastic. The problem is that the soundtrack doesn't play very often, which is a damn shame.

The story itself is the epilogue really. The climax happened 100 years ago when you got your ass kicked. You discover most of the story through an interesting, and slightly frustrating, picture hunt. You find areas on your camera that give you memories, on top of the random ones you get right before each beast. Your adventures culminate in you then storming the castle and fighting Ganon.

Ganon, like most Zelda final bosses, has multiple forms. The first form you fight is a fantastic fight. It combines moves and techniques from every boss you've fought to this point and was the one time you don't fight the camera. It made the combat system shine and makes sure that you've got a good handle on it. His second form, on the other hand is disappointing. It's a big pig that can't hit you unless you literally stand there. Zelda marks spots on him to shoot, and you shoot, culminating in you flying up and killing him in slow motion. While the finisher was cinematic, it was a bit of a let down after the fantastic first phase.

Overall, BotW is a great game, with many flaws. If you have a system to play it, buy it. If you don't, wait for the Switch to get more games, the

The puzzles have been good, the combat is exciting and super satisfying, and the mechanics are spot on to complement both. The story has been very little so far (and that is totally up to me) but I see where they are going and the way they weave the story elements into how and why you are playing is genius. It makes going out and discovering the world engaging. And that is the best thing about this game, Discovery. This is the quintessential adventure game that rewards the venturing out and wanting to explore. I want to turn every corner around the mountain sides, I want to run through all the blades of grass in the prairies, I want to step on every grain of sand in this world to discover whatever it is that is out there for me. But the game also gives you the freedom to forget about venturing out and just engage in the story, but in doing so you will still be going on an adventure surrounded by discovery. And that is why this has been nothing but genius developing all around. And what makes this all the better is that I get to play in this world anywhere because of the Switch. In my home office on the big tv, on my couch while someone else is watching tv, or while falling asleep in bed, I can get my fix of Zelda. The only bad thing I see about this game is that I don’t think I can play a past 3D Zelda game again, I would just be wishing I was playing Breath of The Wild. Expand

-The graphics and environment is beautiful.

    - The way you can interact with the environment and people is a nice touch. Such as catching the grass on fire, damaging trees, people fearfully reacting to you aiming a bow at them, catching your arrow on fire when standing next to a camp fire, etc. Not very impressive in most cases as there are other games that allow the players to do so more or less but still it's nice to see the developers including the level of detail in this title.

-Weapons breaking after hitting a enemy 3-4 times gets annoying at times.

-Soundtrack is good is some areas while others tend to repeat and gets annoying after hearing the same music playing over and over again.

I can go on but I'm just going end this by saying the game is worth the buy.

A great addition to the modern era Zelda games. The open world is vast, varied and beautiful. There really isn't much to complain about. My few minor gripes are the very quick gear degradations and the somewhat repetitive orb dungeons. Aside from that the game is near perfect. Only the insane could not enjoy this long and rewarding return to Hyrule!

I will weight my review in 3 areas. Overall impression, Gameplay, and Graphics. I will not dock points for performance as mentioned above i played this game for Wii U. This is also 100% my opinion of the game based on my experience so far. i have not read a single review yet as i want to have the least biased review possible.

    Overall Impressions:
The game starts off with a voice speaking to link. I was surprised that a Zelda game could finally have some sort of voice acting. It was also nice that the game doesnt force you into pointless tutorials, the game teaches as you play and become immersed in the world around you. after you leave the starting room, the title appears and introduces you to the massive world you will soon explore. Overall a decent start to the game. The starting section of the massive world however is linear at first with little to do except power through.

    Overall 2/3

    Graphics:
The look and atmosphere of BOTW is stunning, even on Wii U. The world seems to be alive. plants regrow, the textures look well designed and the sound track is incredible. Not much else to say here

    3/3

    Gameplay:
While it is refreshing to depart from the old Zelda formula, this does have its clear flaws. Alot of element of gameplay are simply borrowed from other games ex: Elder Scrolls, Far Cry, Assassins Creed. But what the game does barrow makes sense for an open world game. The Combat leaves much to be desired. I enjoy learning my enemies and figuring out how to use my weapons to win a combat, this quickly becomes tedious when constantly switching to different weapons when they break. Crafting is bare bones with little customization and some enemies can attack from what seems to be outside of the render distance. What first impressions i had and the appearance of the game makes up for lacks heavily in overall game play. i found looking for new weapons to be more of a chore. Perhaps the biggest drawback to the combat is the lack of rolling. Im not against changing the zelda formula, i welcome it, but removing such a useful game play mechanic made my experience suffer greatly. Just try to play any Dark Souls game without rolling at all. you cant. Links powers on the other hand are creative original and fun to experiment with. On a final note, WHERE DID THE DUNGEONS GO?????? its just simple and easy challenges like, 1 puzzle or 2 despite being hundreds of these locations in the game. this just seems like lazy game design to me.

    1/4

    Final Score 6/10

I enjoy this game, but it still leaves much to be desired. i have been a Zelda fan for years, and i praise all additions to the series. But i think there is a long way to go, i hope Nintendo can at the very least going forward(for a new zelda game), bring back the roll, fix the weapon degrade system and include ACTUAL DUNGEONS.

Anyway, this game is a **** gem. If you are into the true open world genre. This game can't really be compared to fc, skyrim and horizon as this game is not linear in any way except the first few shrines. In FC, skyrim and horizon, you have loads of unlockable side quests but the main quest is still linear. In breath of the wild you can run straight up to the main boss in your underpants, if you please. Alot of complaints are about the "emptiness" of the world. There is no emptiness in the overworld. There are 120 shrines to find and 900 koroks, well hidden throughout the map. And besides that, you can always find resources for elixirs in the tall grass. Critters like hightail lizards and restless crickets. Or even chop some wood or farm some wheat or rice. Mine some ores and gems. Clear enemy camps for treasure. It's riddled with things to discover.

The durability system is somewhat irritating to start, but quickly becomes a nuisance. Enemies always drop weapons, you learn where to find the good ones *cough*sheikahsensor*cough* + the legendary blade.

It's not a perfect game. There is none in existence. I'm not saying you should buy a switch just for this game if you're not THAT into zelda or open world/non linear games. BUT I will highly recommend this game to people who have already bought a wii u or a switch. And maybe to people who have a 200$/€ to spare for a wii u and zelda. It's a complete game changer for the series. But not perfect.

Außerdem ist die "Framerate" nicht sehr stabil, was mich jedoch nicht arg gestört hat. Jedoch im ganzen betrachtet ist es ein Sehr gutes Spiel.

Breath of the Wild can’t be compared to the likes of The Witcher 3 or Skyrim because it’s not trying to be those games -- it’s a Nintendo game -- and series -- all grown up. It has a lot to offer and will keep you engaged for lengthy periods of time. If you’re playing on Switch as you absolutely should be, then you can also Zelda wherever you go. It’s arguably not the best Zelda game, but damn, it might be the most polished, and the most ambitious.

Does it have the best combat system in the world? No. Is it the best looking game out there? No. Does it have the best RPG soundtrack ever? No. Can the game make you feel like you are eight years old again? Hell yes. It certainly had that effect with me. It has been a long time since exploring, fighting, and adventuring has so consistently brought a smile to my face. Breath of the Wild is such a wonderful experience that once you play it, you will likely never look at open world games the same again.
