Online play is very laggy. The roster is actually a downgrade from Brawl, something I thought I'd never see in the Smash Bros series. Overall it just feels very lazily made, especially with many of the new characters reusing existing mechanics, and 20% of the roster having a counter as one of their B attacks now. The controls feel slippery and imprecise.

A lot of people who don't like the game compare it to Melee, but I don't even care about that. It stands as a bad game on its own.

Fun game as long as you're with friends, but that is about the only time. 8-player smash, the game mode everyone was so excited for, but I knew was gonna suck. I constantly lose myself. 6-player smash was okay, but 4 remained the best. Online mode is ok. The new maps range from good to bad. I hate how the stage will do more damage to you than the person you're going against. I hate how the stage will do more damage to you than the person you're going against. I found myself just using the final destination mode on every stage because the new stages blow, ESPECIALLY the Pac-Man stage. The new character additions are meh. I felt they added more characters to the series that don't really need them since they aren't as popular. Not trying to speak for everyone, but every person I have talked to about this games roster said they would have preferred more characters from the Sonic series, the Donkey Kong series, the return of Lucas, the Metroid Series, or the Star-Fox series. The game modes are a disappointment. Most of them are just returns from its predecessors, but they aren't as fun. They ruined Classic Mode. I was so excited to go through it but now its just horrible. Why did they remove going through battles in one go? It isn't a "Classic" mode if they modified it so much. Also, no adventure mode. What were they thinking? Single player in Brawl only lasted for me because there was a story mode. Playing tons of pointless matches alone will only last for so long. Playing Smash with friends, however, is always a fun time. That's where every flaw is negligible. No matter what you're doing, as long as you're playing this with a friend it should be fine. In my case, though, multiplayer is fun but loses its flare in about 45 minutes to an hour before I start getting bored of the same thing over and over again. My friend who I normally play with can play for hours, so I guess that says something. A solid, polished game- undeserving of its god-like praise in my opinion. Expand

That said, naturally there is no way I am going to give this good score as it is now, if anything i am being generous as basically whole game is rather broken for me. hopefully nintendo manages to make online better, I shall raise my rating then. This game feels at first like it should be good, but for a game with emphasis on player-vs-player duels (the single player modes are absolutely anemic compared to Brawl or Melee), it's off in very subtle ways. There are situations in *every match* where something happens to a player that no one involved can explain - and this is with items off!

Nintendo (Namco?) has spent a lot of time trying for character balance, but they've missed the larger boat of a fighting game that feels responsive and satisfying. I wanted to like this game, but I just can't.

Smash is back, better than ever. The mechanics are much more quick-paced like Melee as opposed to the sluggish Brawl physics. However, while the core requirements are meant, a few minor things do irk me about this title.

For one, all but 9 characters are given to you at the start. While that may sound awesome initially, I found the rewarding system of character unlocks was all but gone in this title.

Secondly, the Classic mode is pretty weird this time around. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems to be some strange battle royale system that's never adequately explained.

Lastly, and this is the biggest issue, the target smash system. Target smash was in its prime back in Melee when each character had their own, charater-specific stages. In brawl, they pussied out and gave us just a few generic stages that could be played on with any character. But in SSBWiiU, they completely ruin this once mighty minigame. Instead of breaking the targets yourself, you launch a bomb across a field into a group of structures containing targets (sound familiar?). The result is a train wreck of an experience. The glass cage which surrounds your starting platform seldom ever breaks, resulting in all too many infuriating explosions at ground zero. On the off chance that you can actually manage to propel the explosive through the cage, what follows is an underwhelming cutscene of an explosion. The Target Smash in this game just isn't fun; it's a poor man's Angry Birds.

However, SSBWiiU is filled to the brim and above with content, and anything I haven't mentioned above works flawlessly and provides more entertainment then the past installments put together. It's been a while since I felt so in need of video game time, most games aren't that addicting to me anymore. But this title keeps calling me back. Now if you'll excuse me...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. These games are supposed to be fun and be a crossover of the main cast of various videogame franchises. Well, to me, this game...AND Brawl fails to meet this. Now compared to the 3DS ver. this one IS better, but not by far. Brawl first introduced a story mode. But guess what? Sakurai decides to remove the story mode they've been working on for this game because 'people are watching it on YouTube' which is as vague as anyone can get.
Now In SSB-64 and Melee we had new characters that retain their popular voices, likeness, and design, and the returning characters experience the same. But someone not right in the head decides that Twilight Princess Link (Akira Sasanuma) is more notable and more recognizable in the Zelda franchise than OoT Link (Nobuyuki Hiyama). The fact that Hiyama didn't voice Link in that game is why people hated it, same went with Twilight Princess Ganondorf (who sounds like he has a cockroach in his throat while inhaling copious traces of helium). They bother to remove Link's Illusion Stab but character who don't need, let alone deserve it, have mash-attacks (like King Dedede, Palutena, Pit, Bowser Jr, Diddy Kong, etc). Not to mention since it's TP Link we are literally FORCED to use the Gale Boomerange which royally sucks. They downright give out too much transformation attacks as Final Smashes (which are mostly downright useless). They apparently had the gall to replace Marth's Shield Breaker with this pansy Thrust of the same name. Lucina is pointless, she literally has the EXACT moveset of Marth, NO DIFFERENCE, not even speed or DMGwise! Upon getting the game, unloicking characters doing events, hr contest and classic mode, there is NOTHING for you to do. Target Blast is a joke, it is really nothing but luck purely. And what were they on to think adding VILLAGER from Animal Crossing would make sense. His side smash is LITERALLY him dropping a bowling ball in front of himself. I can't even comprehend how he can even charge that attack! I'm also tired of the challenges forcing you to be someone that sucks. ie: to get this reward k.O a giant bowser with Tiny olimar in less than 40 seconds!) OLIMAR sucks. He has no reach and even his smash attacks do nothing against him. People are going crazy over this game and I think it's undeserved. This game would be far greater if it had this:
    NOBUYUKI HIYAMA Link
    TAKASHI NAGASAKO Ganondorf.
    NOTHING from Twilight Princess.
Roy and Pichu back (either as a character or assist).

Hell, people say this game added a ton of new modes. No they didn't all the new things you get is: Target Blast, Torphy Rush, Smash Run/Smash Tour (which is really stupid, they barely even explain how much of any of it works), 8-player smash, special orders, and stage builder. Just how miniscule these modes are don't even make much of them worth a single mode in countenance(I'd barely consider them as two modes in total). The Mii Fighters are demeaning. 'There are so many people I can't add so you can create them yourselves as a Mii fighter' says Sakurai. Right, right, So I'm sure I can give a Mii red, blue, pink, or even purple hair, right? Nope, the most you can get out of hair color from miis is blonde, brown, light brown, black, and auburn. The Gunner is a more of a Samus clone than anything. The Brawler is clearly Ryu from Street fighter. The swordfighter is the worst, ALL OF HIS ATTACKS are centered around being ninja-oriented, especially with him constantly having his sword being held in reverse grip most of the time. Why can't you create the moveset why can't you clone from an existing ACTUAL fighter? And to top it all off the Mii Swordfighter's Final Smash SUCKS. He raises his sword and shoots out a myriad of blade beams. But what's that? The Mii Brawlers gets a Dissidia-Omnislash Style final smash. You'd be lucky if Swordfighter's baldebeams even smash an opp. It's worthless. Not to mention. What's the point in creating a fighter if he has NO VOICE? Why can't you just select from a preset voice for custom characters or choose your own from the console memory/sd card?
Bottom line is Melee's easily better.

The game looks fantastic, plays fantastic, and the soundtrack (like usual) is awesome.Classic mode is pretty cool with different intensities and choosable routes. Stage builder is more customizable than ever and is easy to use, but it would be nice if you could do 8-player battles on them. Some of the new characters are awesome like Rosalina and Luma, Mega man, Pacman, etc. They balanced OP characters from brawl *cough* Meta Knight. And the new items are fun.
If you were used to the controls from its 3ds counterpart, the grab has changed and is now the ZR and ZL and shielding is R and L. This threw me off as the 3ds 's default grabbing was L and default shielding was R. I am aware you can change the controls under a name and select the name before playing, but with gamemodes like smash tour and events, I am forced to use the default controls, which I will always screw up using. That was one of many flaws this game hosts. The content feels sort of lacking, with no story or adventure mode to play through, instead you have many gamemodes that either are stupid and not needed or just boring. All-star mode remains unchanged from the 3ds version, aside from facing fighters in reverse-chronological order. 8-player mode was a welcome concept that allows more than 4 players to join in, but if you are playing with all 8 players it is too chaotic and the maps you are restricted to play on seem a little odd. Crazy orders are pretty fun, but master orders seem rather unnecessary and I feel like they were just put there as a content filler. Smash tour is pretty boring and very disorienting as so much is going on at once, and the stats and fighters on your team are extremely small and hard to read.
You are given way too many characters and stages already unlocked off the bat which are way easier to unlock compared to previous games, which takes a lot of the fun, challenge and replay value out of the game. There are too many retro stages (which aren't even organized/separated from new ones) and not enough new, creative stages. Cool characters like Ice Climbers, Snake, Lucas and Wolf were ripped from the roster in replacement for stupid clones like Dark Pit and Dr. Mario.
Easily the worst part of the game is the online. I don't even bother playing free-for-all matches as all it takes is one person with a bad connection to turn 2 minutes into 6 minutes of laggy hell and if you try to leave you are temporarily banned. It is beyond me why 'For Glory' free-for-all matches and team matches are timed. However 1-on-1 for glory matches are quite smooth and thankfully are stocked.

Let me reiterate by saying, this game is great, but far from perfect. I would rate it 7.5 out of ten but since that's not possible, for now, it is a 7/10.

As an avid Smash Bros. predictor, I was slightly disappointed that the roster wasn;t bigger, but it strikes a balance never seen before in a Smash Bros. game (no completely overpowered characters that have been discovered so far), and customizing character's abilities and specials adds a butt-ton of replay value.
The new modes are all pretty fun too (including Smash Tour, as long as you have a friend with you), but they can get stale after a while. I suggest rotating what you do to provide a bigger variety in gameplay experience.
The stages are incredible- the best of any Smash Bros. game to date. And we get a ton of great music scores to boot as well! Well over 50% of them are going to be going on my phone.
Overall, it makes some slight but successful changes to the Smash Bros. formula and is a blast to play with friends. I give it a 9.5 (rounded up to a 10).

Well it's a smash bros game so it is bound to be good, but is it really that good?

My overall experience so far with the game has been of slight disappointment, about the same I felt with Brawl but for slightly different reasons. I'll list my biggest gripes to let you know what I find frustrating about the design of the game:

First and foremost - when you have three generations of a game that have taught you that the backmost left and right triggers are for shield, and the closer smaller trigger button(s) are for grabs, why would you go and change that for the wii u controller? And not only that, but this is the most ridiculous part of all - why would you make it so the only way you can change controls is to assign them to a "name", and then give you absolutely no way to choose a default name for your controller or login? That makes absolutely no sense, and is mind numbingly frustrating to deal with when you forgot to change your name in the bottom left before every match or game mode, and you go to execute a block, roll, or grab, and the buttons are reversed from what you've grown to learn for nearly a decade of a games existence. That's an automatic -2 from the score right there. No excuse for them to overlook this, you can't tell me not one person in that entire company could have thought this to be a bad game design decision.

My next issue is the removal of the adventure mode in favor of this smash tour mode. Smash tour mode simply put is just lackluster. It is too rng based and there isn't much skill to be had here, I guess they wanted to make a mario party type hybrid mode in the game? I'd be fine w/ it if they still included the adventure mode, which in my opinion was incredibly fun in melee/brawl. You can't even choose the difficulty level on the ai opponents for the board game mode, so clearly it was rushed out, the whole game seems like it was released a bit early to be honest. -1 for the exclusion of adventure mode and addition of rushed modes that don't really work that well.

There is also lag present in the game, which should just not be happening in this day and age for console games. You know exactly the hardware your game will be running on, if it is lagging as often and as badly as it does. -1 for this.

There are other minor qualms I have but the above are mainly why I have to detract from the score. The "good" has already been highlighted by enough reviewers already that I don't need to go over that, but I am mainly writing this review to give you a little more realistic view of what you are getting with this game, if you are irked by the type of things that irk me.

    PROS

    # Its Still the same Smash Bros that we all got around the couch for in the Gamecube and Wii days, It strikes the right balance as being faster than Brawl though not as fast as Melee, just that right balance that I like

    # The character roster is impressive, one of the strongest I've seen in a fighting game just outside of Marvel VS Capcom 2, I especially like some the new characters, I really grew fond of Shulk and Pac-Man rather quickly.

    # 8 Player Smash is really fun, my personal preference is 6 as I feel that's the right balance of players on the field without being too chaotic.

    # LOTS of unlockables, they will certainly keep you busy for weeks on end.

    WHAT I DON'T LIKE

    # The Menu's are a bit tricky to navigate, the fact that some buttons are smaller than others and not very well titled makes them a bit of a hassle to navigate.

    # Lots of recycled assets in the form of Stages and Music tracks, while they are nice to see return I would have appreciated a bit more originality.

    # Smash Tour is lame. Its too randomised and a bit of a slog to be enjoyable. My friends and I tried it twice, the 2nd time when we knew what we were doing and didn't go back to it..

    # Classic mode shares a really annoying gripe I have with Kid Icarus: Uprising, and that is when you die the difficulty is automatically lowered. URRRGHHH DON'T F*****G DO THAT SAKURAI, IT FEELS INCREDIBLY CONDESCENDING AS IF THE GAME IS SAYING: "Oh its too hard for you? Let me make it easier" NO!!! I want to learn from my mistakes not have the experienced dumbed down.

I just got this game today after MONTHS of hype, and I have to say...it definitely was worth the wait!.

Pros: Obvious thing first, the graphics are gorgeous! The game runs at 1080p and 60 frames per second (most of the time, there is lag during online), the colours are extremely vibrant and the animations are masterful! The gameplay and controls are really easy to pick up and learn,

The gameplay and controls are really easy to pick up and learn, if you have played Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii or the 3DS version of this game, you will master the Wii U version without stress.
The amount of fighters and stages has increased diversely from Brawl and even has more characters than the 3DS version. All of the stages are really fun to brawl on and there isn't a single stage I didn't like.
There are tons of new challenges to complete, more trophies and many familiar game modes (Classic, events, stadium, all-stars etc.) return, some with slightly new spins and others in their original former glory!
One of the main new modes in the game is 8-player smash, which allows you to play with up to 7 other friends or CPU controlled characters, I personally found 8 player smash to be a lot of fun, I haven't had the chance to play with friends yet, but I simply cannot wait to do so!

    Cons:
Not all of the new modes are awesome, I personally found the Smash Tour mode to be tedious and I personally wouldn't want to sink any of my time into it.

Overall, Super Smash Bros for Wii U is a fantastic experience, it is by far the best game of 2014 (The only other game from 2014 i have played is FIFA 15, and who would give that a GOTY award?) and because of this game alone, there is absolutely NO reason the Wii U shouldn't be selling well.

10/10 (The problems aren't even worth mentioning as they are so minute and don't take away from the experience)

This is one of the greatest game ever made. The soundtrack is undeniably the best in video game history. it includes the best tracks of Nintendo's (and third party companies) history, which would make this the best soundtrack ever on its own, but it also includes several remixes of old tracks that sound AMAZING! Look up Spark Man Stage music on YouTube and you will know what I mean. TheyThis is one of the greatest game ever made. They even decided to go ahead and remix music from Mario Kart 8! A game released a few months ago on the Wii U as well! That's called dedication. Anyway, the gameplay has been perfected from past games. Remember those characters in Brawl of Melee that could spam their regular combo? Yeah, screw that, those aren't found here, thank God. The roster of characters is astounding, including characters like Mega Man, Pac-Man, Rosalina (a personal favorite of mine), and even MewTwo in the near future. Also, when you get above 100% in damage, your fighter now has a smoke effect that instantly warns you when you are at risk of being killed. Also, when you attack an opponent when they are at a dangerous health, they now emit a red spark letting you know that they would probably die then. The maps in this game are the best I have seen in a Smash Bros game, or any fighting/racing/party game. They are all unique in cool ways, like how the Mario Galaxy stage has its own special gravity along the planet, and the Mario Kart 8 stage puts you up against the track at different angles so the karts can do massive damage from multiple locations. Unlike the 3DS version, the stages that returned from past games were much better than stuff like Jungle Japes on 3DS (lol wat). In terms of new game modes, there is so much new stuff here. First, they expand on the returning modes by adding competitive/co op multiplayer to familiar game modes. Also, classic mode is changed drastically. It features you on a game board advancing based on how well you do. Target Blast is okay. It certainly isn't as good as before, but it is still decent. They should have included the old mode, but whatever. All star mode has been improved from the 3DS version since you don't have to jump over the door to get to the health items. The door is on an elevated platform, so you can walk under it to get to the items. The online mode is the best ever with it actually functioning unlike Brawl. It features For Fun and For Glory, depending on how good you think you are. The game has SO MANY CONTROLLER OPTIONS. There is something in the controller department for anybody. The only problem i have with this game is that the blowing item thing from Skyward Sword is ridiculously OP. Buy this game. Give Nintendo all of your savings even though the game only costs $60. Just consider the rest to be a tip for making this masterpiece in the first place. Expand
