RENT if you can at first, because 60 bucks is a bit steep for this!

One of the most unique, colorful and fun games on the Wii U hands down, really addictive with more free content coming soon. This is a "must have" game.

It's not going to be a system seller but for Wii U owners like myself that are constantly trying to justify buying a Wii U splatoon is a great game, it wouldn't work as well on any other system.

I'm not a big fan of multiplayer games, but this game has a revolutionary, exciting, fresh mulitplayer mode, i am not disappointed at all! The gameplay is fun on many ways. You can level up, collect coins, buy new weapons and gears, and obtain different abilities, lovely! There are few maps (Very nice maps!), but there will come more soon.
The soundtrack on this game is amazing too, it's so different.

The graphics and psycics are sweet on this game, you can almost feel and smell the ink.

There is also a addictive mini-game while waiting for a battle start on multiplayer mode, i will give a big plus for that too.

This game is easy to learn, and fun to master. Good job Nintendo, as always!

New IP from Nintendo and they hit it out of the park! I wont explain the concept of splatoon since you can easily find a trailer or video review that will do that better than me, but I will say that the game does everything it tries to do extremely well. The weapons are surprisingly well balanced, and even with only a handful of maps and 2 multiplayer modes every game feels fresh.

The weapons are surprisingly well balanced, and even with only a handful of maps and 2 multiplayer modes every game feels fresh.

In multiplayer lobbies fill up fast with 8 players then they get divided randomly into 2 teams. after the match is over the teams are shuffled, dropped players are replaced and you go again. Some people complain about the lack of voice chat, but in this case while i wont argue that voice chat could have been utilized well here, I honestly dont feel like it detracts from the experience. games are fast and maps are pretty tight, if you need to be told what to do, or tell someone else what to do its probably too late already.

Ranked mode adds a nice refreshing take on king of the hill, its fast and frantic. This mode has more competitive matchmaking with a c- through a+ rating system. you gain more points and experience for winning but unlike in standard turfwar you will often gain no exp and lost ranked points if you are on the losing team. The only exception here is if the time runs out rather than the enemy team winning by holding the objective for 100 seconds.

Lets talk single player. The single player here is a real unsung hero. The levels are well designed, the story surprisingly deep. The story mode teaches you everything you need to know about the games mechanics to jump into multiplayer, but does so without resorting to putting you in wattered down death matches with enemies. The turf war scenario or splatzone (king of the hill) mechanics are never used once in the single player. It has its own gameplay identity focusing more on movement mechanics, and platforming.

So some will argue that the game was shipped "incomplete" because nintendo is releasing new content steadily over the summer (and presumably beyond), but honestly the game was solid out of the box. Dont get me wrong it wasnt the most robust experience ever, but Ive paid 60 bucks for way worse games with way more content and much less quality. This game was great out of the box and gets better with every content update.

I'm not big into online multiplayer games, but I've sunk many hours into Splatoon since it was released last week. It's a lot of fun. Just don't expect local multiplayer because it doesn't really have that (yes, there's a 1 vs. 1 mode, but it's not very much fun).

Ditto for the games campaign which can be found by walking to the Manhole next to the ramp leading to the Lobby and friend battles are as simple as just sending them a friend request from the Wii U's main menu and just selecting the Battle With Friends option at the lobby when they're online. It's clear that many of the negative reviews either don't really have the game or turned it off 5 minutes in since all of this is explained in game shortly after the tutorial level. Expand

I’d be the first to admit that when Splatoon was first shown off at E3 2014, I wasn’t exactly excited. I mean, the game looked cool at least, but I was nowhere near as hyped as most people. I mean, the game looked cool at least, but I was nowhere near as hyped as most people. As more and more information about the game was released (such as the single-player campaign), I became interested in it. The thing that really convinced me to get the game was the Splatoon Direct.

The main mode of the game is Turf War in which, you guessed it, tried to claim as much turf as possible in 3 minutes. You control strange creatures known as Inklings which use three types of weapons: shooters (or guns), chargers, and rollers. My favorite kind of weapons were the shooters as they covered a lot of ground and offered good offense. You’re more likely to win with the rollers but you were basically defenseless when using them. As an Inkling, you shoot ink on the ground and walls as well as swim through your own ink to move faster. This gameplay really separates Splatoon from other shooters out there and makes it feel even more unique than it already is. The colorful style of the game is also a contributing factor to this. Turf War was easily my favorite mode of the bunch.

As of the date this review was made, there is only one Ranked Battle mode and that is Splat Zones. You only unlock Splat Zones once you get to Level 10 which was a bit high to me. I think Level 8 or 9 would’ve been reasonable too. Unfortunately, I was a bit less disappointed by this mode. It doesn’t feel worth all the effort getting to Level 10 which, believe me, takes forever! In this mode, there are areas on the stage your team must control for 100 seconds total. The concept looked interesting at first but soon I found it was more hectic and frustrating than just being simple fun like Turf War. I will try out this mode on occasion every now and again but it’s definitely not forgiving.

Surprisingly, I had absolutely no lag while playing through Splatoon’s online modes. As you’ll spend most of the game playing online with others, it’s good Nintendo focused on making it as smooth as possible. I did have a few communication errors but none of them were during the match—they were all just in the lobby. Speaking of the lobby, the main area you’ll be exploring here is Inkopolis. It was pretty easy to get around since it was straightforward. If you don’t like finding the right shop everytime though, you can just click it on the GamePad which was super helpful.

I really enjoyed the story mode, though not as much as Turf War. It seems every level introduces a new idea like Super Mario 3D World. Yes, the levels are linear but that’s never bothered me in past games and they definitely didn’t here. The bosses really stand out as a unique part in the mode. You really had to think about how to defeat them which is something I really appreciate in this kind of game. For something that has online modes as its main focus, I was surprised by how much I liked the single-player campaign.

Battle Dojo is Splatoon’s only local co-op mode which was a bit of a shame as I was hoping for some co-op Turf War. You can do two-player online in Smash Bros. so why not here? Maybe in some future DLC. In Battle Dojo, you have to pop as many balloons as possible. They’ll appear in 20 second intervals on the stage you’re playing on which is plenty of time. Battle Dojo does feel like it goes on for quite some time but I’m pretty sure you won’t be playing it that much anyway. Not that it’s bad, it’s just not the most memorable aspect of the game.

Overall, Splatoon was a very interesting game. We rarely see new IPs by Nintendo but this game for sure should encourage them to continue making them. While Turf War stands out as being my favorite mode of the game, I really enjoyed the story mode as well as the co-op Battle Dojo at times. The only thing I didn’t really like was Splat Zones but I can look over that. The online is smooth and the gameplay is super unique compared to other shooters.

I am not too sure how to sum up my thoughts and feelings on Splatoon as they seem to change slightly with each play session I have with the game. Lets start with the good aspects:

I am not too sure how to sum up my thoughts and feelings on Splatoon as they seem to change slightly with each play session I have with the game. Lets start with the good aspects:

*The controls are absolutley spot on. Tight coontrols are very important for this kind of game, and both the motion controls and the traditional analogue stick methods work very well, with no lag. If you can get used to the motion control scheme (it took me about an hour of play for it to click) it is the superior option. The level of precision that can come form slight tilts of the gamepad is better than even mouse control for shooting.

*The animation is flawless, all running at a slick 60fps.

*The cental game idea of claiming territory through paint is imaginative and fun, and makes the game (which is essentially a third person shooter) feel so fresh and new.

*The game pad integration is really good. With the lack of voice chat (see below) being able to see what your team is doing on the gamepad and then instantly jump to their location is a great touch for adding more strategy to proceedings.

    Now the bad:

*Lack of modes. At launch there was only a single online mode. Another mode was unlocked a few days after release, and yet more are promised in the coming months, but I can't rate the game on what could be released later. The single online mode at launch is good fun, but with a 3 minute timer it is far too short. Often you feel like you are just starting to get a grip on the current battle when it ends abruptly. The single player is surprisingly good for what is essentially an online game...but it is pretty short (should last about 5 hours).

*Lack of voice chat. I HATE voice chat in most online games as it generally just decends into teenage brats shouting obscenities at each other. But in a game like Splatoon which is about teamwork, not being able to communicate with your team is a major let down.

*Clunky interface. There are lots of small annoyances with the UI, such as having to listen to pointless chit chat from NPCs when all you really want to do is buy something, or even just jump into a match. There really should have been a skip button to avoid hearing all the pointless dialogue.

As I said, it is hard to sum everything up as every time I play I generally have a new feeling about the game (sometimes better, sometimes worse. Overall I think it is a fun game, but it doesn't quite feel like a first party Nintendo game...It feels more like a good indie game, or an e-shop title.

Fun, just an absolute blast, One of the best online games I've ever played. More fun and balanced than any online shooter I have ever played. No camping, no spawn deaths, turf warfare draws up literal lines of battle on the field. The style of play and design of the game is fast and an absolute blast. It is simply brilliant.

What a unique and enjoyable game. The objective of painting more turf than your opponents is so enjoyable, I just can't get enough. I've played hundreds of hours of M rated shooters and enjoy Splatoon more than any of those. Granted, they really aren't even comparable in many ways.

The ability to turn into a squid an swim in your own ink adds such a great dynamic to the gameplay.

The ability to turn into a squid an swim in your own ink adds such a great dynamic to the gameplay. Firefights are a lot of fun when you get creative with the ink. When you and an enemy end up fighting over the same turf, you've got to take them out if you want to put more of your ink down. So you get creative and spray up the walls and swim up and behind your enemy and shoot them down! It's a blast.

The variety of weapons is excellent. I actually appreciate the fact that weapons are automatically paired with a sub weapon and a special weapon. It allows the weapon classes to be more balanced and forces you to exploit the pros and cons of each weapon class.

This game is the most unique online gaming experience I've had, probably ever. Great job, Nintendo.

Enter Splatoon, a truly unique experience I never knew I wanted. The object is simple; cover the level with more ink than you're opponent. I had fun from the beginning, simply running around shooting ink everywhere, and had even more fun as I developed more complex strategies on an hourly basis. The Seapunk aesthetic added a wave of 90's nostalgia (the terms "fresh" and "booyah" are prominent), and the animation and fluid simulation is... well, they're just REALLY fun to watch.

Now the lack of content is a HUGE elephant in the room: only two multiplayer modes, and two levels to be exact. But Nintendo's promised free content over the next few months, and I'm definitely having enough fun with those two levels and two modes to keep me busy until then.

The online mode is non-stop fun, with more unique weapons than Halo, CoD, and Battlefield combined. The reason for this being that every weapon is not only optimized for killing, but also for painting the landscape. There is nothing like the roller in any other shooter, and every other weapon has a unique twist as well.
    _>>_
Though there are few levels at launch, they are unique, especially when considering the controls of the game. Swimming up walls as a squid in ink is something that requires consideration. Added to that being a requirement for ink to be present in the first place, and the few levels suddenly feel like many levels. Being able to super jump to any ally also serves to differentiate this title from ALL OTHER shooters.
    _>>_
The controls in this game can either be the standard dual analog that every shooter uses, or it can utilize motion controls for even greater precision. I started off just giving the motion controls a try, but quickly found that they provided a precision only otherwise found in PC mouse+keyboard shooters. Now I play with motion controls at all times.

The story mode feels like it is a modern version of classic single player games from famous games of yesteryear. I found myself comparing the world hopping to Super Mario 64, and Banjo Kazooie. The worlds are also similar to Super Mario 64 in that they consist of floating platforms in a void, and falling off means re-spawning at the last checkpoint. I loved it for its more lighthearted gameplay compared to the monotone shaded and "gritty", or "hard core" shooters that are currently the hated norm. My only complaint is that you are limited to one weapon type, which is essentially a sub machine gun that shoots paint.

Splatoon is what people deserve: a shooter with good base that lacks on everything else. No local play besides a silly mode of popping ballons at 2015 is just plain idiot. No bots and no splitscreen, no good shot'em'up. But the worst of all is the people saying this is a masterpiece. It could have been a good game but the lack of basic things make Splatoon a mediocre game.

I haven't had this much fun in a very long time. Nintendo shows there could be more than just picking off people in your typical shooter. More maps, modes and gear will be available in the future without a season pass. Voice chat is sadly unavailable but to tell the truth there hasn't been one instance where I found it completely necessary. The rounds are delivered in these small sweet doses that doesn't drag on.
Having to exit the lobby to just change your load out is very inefficient and needs to be adjusted as well as having classes.

Splatoon delivers on the fun but the lack of content holds it back. Nintendo has already started releasing content at no charge just 3 days after release which is a positive sign. Let's hope Nintendo will address issues that have to do with voice chat and even the weapon selection between rounds a reality.

Click on their names and expose that they have only ever left one review in their entire history of being on Metacritic, so I call Troll on that.
In my original review I wanted to stress that I'm not interested in shooter games, and especially not interested in voice chat option in any game because in my experience it has been mostly annoying listening to racist, misogynist, and homophobic slurs, and/or being told where to go and what to do by a complete stranger. What makes the lack of voice chat succeed even more is that the matches are extremely short, they are always with random people, the game play is so simple and manic there is no way of guessing the other team's moves and then there is the ability to use the touch pad to launch yourself to a player who taps the commands, "C'mon" or "Booyah"... what other communication does someone need? It's not like a shooter at all, it's more like capture the flag aka Turf War. You don't get points for shooting the other players, just covering Turf. Also, I want to add that this is the first time I have ever felt like the game pad has been put to great use with the motion controls adding superior aiming and a sense of immersion that has me totally addicted. What most reviewers also don't say much about is the single player mode where it sometimes feels like a 3D platformer along the lines of the Mario Galaxy series, which are pretty huge boots to fill! So combined with the Ranked Battle mode, the General Mode, the General Mode with friends, the local two player mode, and the single player adventure, I'd say we got the game of the year right here!

This game would be a blast if more care had been put into the meat of the title as much as the aesthetics.

As it stands, it's a really good game, albeit one hampered by Nintendo's desire to stay in the year 1992 at all costs when it comes to multiplayer. This wouldn't be an issue if it were not for the genre of the game itself, but a shooter in 2015 lives and dies by its' multiplayer offering, for good or bad. And it needs to be solid on release too, because the multiplayer community for games die off quick when it has no depth to keep it coming back for more (see Evolve for evidence of this).

I can see it dying off really quickly, I really can. I'd recommend avoiding and picking up cheap for the single player experience in a few months, because there really is nothing to be had here for someone looking to invest time in multiplayer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Splatoon is Nintendo's next big IP. I am one who was fully anticipating it's release with excitement and when I got my hands on the game after work the day of release, I was not disappointed. The game's controls are flawless and easy to learn, but a bit tougher to master. One will learn this as they play through the game's online mode, Turf Wars. The more one plays, the more one starts to pick up on methods that help him or her traverse the environment faster as well as how to combat opponents more cleverly. It all takes practice.

While mastering the controls helps players grow into more menacing foes, there is also a "seemingly" never ending supply of clothing and weapons that can be purchased at stores found in the main lobby of the game. A nice feature that the game contains is fast earning currency. Play some games and it is not difficult to rack up thousands of the in-game money. When one has their fill of online-play, he or she can go shopping and raid all the shops, which include a weapons shop, shirt shop, shoe store, and headgear store. All clothing is ranked from 1 to 3 stars, at least from what I have seen so far, and these stars symbolize that specific piece of clothing's "power." Essentially, the more stars, the better the piece of clothing. This is because clothing comes with perks. Usually pieces come preinstalled with a perk, such as increased speed while running, or the ability to locate mine traps, etc. The more stars clothing has, however, the more perks the clothing can earn. I have bought some clothes that reach up to 4 different perks which greatly enhance my stats. I am a particular fan of the defensive perk and the invisible squid perk which boost my defenses against enemy fire to help me stay alive longer and allow me to "super jump" to the side of my teammates without the other team noticing my arrival.

While online battles are definitely my favorite part of this game, the single player story mode is very charming and a lot of fun. It is not incredibly difficult, so it will not turn away players who may not be very adept at playing video games, but it also feels exciting enough to keep seasoned players feeling the mode is worth while and enjoyable. Each level that one plays through is unique and usually has obstacles related to a specific theme. For example, one world I played through has small sponges that, when filled with ink, would expand for myself to traverse over into new areas. Another area had propeller platforms that would move while ink is being sprayed into the propeller blades. By having a variety of environments and keeping each design radically different from the next, this keeps the gameplay feeling fresh and innovative. I am always left wondering what is next and I must keep playing to find out. The bosses found in the story mode remind me of bosses found in the Pikmin franchise. They have wonderful character designs and exploitable weaknesses. One boss has a large cylinder body and a nozzle for a nose and fires large purple paint balls at its enemy to attack. By splatting the bellybutton-like tentacles on its side, one can send it into a state of unconsciousness so that finishing blows can be dealt to the main tentacle sticking out of its head. Completing this task three times in a row will defeat the boss.

Lastly, I have also been lucky enough to get my hands on the three Splatoon amiibos. Each one offers specialized versions of the story mode, but unlike one has seen before. The stages are the same, but the objectives and means of completing the objectives are not. For instance, the Green Squid amiibo firsts asks the player to complete the very first level of the story mode by utilizing the power of a "Special Weapon" called the "Kraken." The Kraken is usually used for short burts of time, when a special meter is filled in battles during turf wars. However, in this challenge, the kraken is used to traverse the stage quickly, because the player is left with a fast ticking timer. If the time runs out, then the player loses and has to start all over. While I hate to admit it, I ended up losing my first try, because time ran out just before I reached the end of the level. I was quick to play again and win and had a great time doing so. When enough challenges are completed, the amiibos will reward the player with in-game currency and upon beating special boss challenges, will also give out special weapons and armor. These new weapons and armor can be used in turf wars and can be leveled up to gain new perks. My favorite is the alien-looking armor that the Green Squid amiibo gives the player upon completing all the special missions. The armor turns any Inkling into a cool cyborg-looking player which looks real nice in turf wars.

Overall, I truly believe this game is an experience unlike any other. The game's only flaw is how addicting it can be. A definite must-have for Wii U owners and I am excited to see how this franchise will evolve over time.

I have to admit I did think this game was going to be fun but quite mediocre. In actuality its much better than that. It really is a simple idea and it works really effectively.

The basic is that your are a squid/child. Changing forms to reload squid ink. You have a gun that shoots a coloured ink, you can turn into a squid to dive into the ink and reload your ink or you can run around as a child shooting. Squid form also allows you to scale walls providing it is covered with your ink. Sounds odd, it really isn't and immediatly makes sense.

There are 2 main ways that you can play this game depending on your mood (currently). The first is via the single player mode, take on a variety of missions in puzzle based platforming using the ink in your gun. The second is via online play, Turf War mode the rules are to cover as much of the map as you can with your colour ink, if that means knocking off the opposition to do so then so be it.

Where Nintendo have been clever is that they have managed to make a family friendly 4 v 4 shooter that isn't violent at all and is just different enough to appeal to the most avid shooter players. Yet again they have done the thing that they always do best, create a likeable character base and create a game that can appeal to almost anyone.

I have been constantly playing this game since I bought it, over some other huge titles that I have also purchased. I feel that this would be a brilliant game for eSports as well.

Where it loses a point and this is my only bug at the moment (which may well change) is it needs more maps and maybe a couple more modes as well. As there is an area that says MODE I do reckon that they is an intention to add more, i haven't read too much on it but I would love to see something new in order to keep it fresh. Should that get introduced I would be happy to put the score up.

There are a lot of negative comments about their being a problem with the fact that the WiiU doesn't have a head set so you can struggle without communication. This is apparent but the games are so short, i dont think there is really much need, the concept is so simple I dont think communication would help. The teams are mixed up each round anyway so it would be hard to put anything in place. I just dont think the WiiU is that sort of consoles anyway.

If you have a WiiU and like online play, you NEED this.

Yes, this game's multi-player maps, skins, and general options are slim at launch. BUT the gameplay is innovative, intelligent, deep, and most importantly, a blast to play. While certain mechanics are borrowed from past Nintendo titles (the single-player feels like if Mario Galaxy and Portal 2 had a rebellious late 90's baby), it all comes down to a rich experience that is a thrill to play.

I'm writing this as an adult that puts in about 4 hours of video game playing a week at max. Like Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and even co-op titles like Mario 3D World, I see myself coming back to play this for years to come. Do I care that content is limited at launch? Not really because I don't play on sitting around for hours upon hours playing it. Instead, I'll boot it up once a week or so, be excited when I see new content and enjoy playing the most fun shooter that I've played since Golden Eye.

And don't think that I only enjoy this because I'm a casual gamer. I've played video games for over 25 years at this point - sometimes addicted, sometimes casually, sometimes with absolute wonder at graphical improvements and total immersion. This game isn't Earth-shattering. But I know that I have years to look forward to with it and that if the world catches on, that Nintendo will have a hit with parents, kids, and teenagers who are cool enough to be open-minded about this.

When it comes to online multiplayer, it's incredibly fun and addicting even with the low amount of online content. And I really loved that the game doesn't have in-game voice chat, because in online battles that short (3 minutes), the voice chat is absolutely unnecessary, distracting and because the fact you only need to make a strategy for your equipment makes the strategy with the other players useless. If you play online, just sit back and ink all the place, forget about dumb strategies that are more focused on killing the other players than covering the most of the stage with ink. 3 minutes, 4 vs 4 players, tiny stages, only equipment strategy, and shoot, shoot, reload, shoot, shoot, repeat. If you feel that the Mario Kart 8 online races aren't chaotic enough, play Splatoon and you will know what chaos is.

And while Splatoon borrows from a number of genres, it's truly a unique experience and the most fun I've had in a long time playing a multiplayer game. We need Nintendo innovating and pushing game design. Let the other companies push technical specs, I like my games smartly built. Many of the complaints people have seem to be intentional design decisions that I appreciate. The lack of voice chat can be frustrating, and perhaps they should have included it within your friends list, but I love not having it. There is no toxic community, which is appropriate in an all ages game. And if they were to give players an option to turn it on or off, it would then force me to decide between handicapping my team or dealing with that toxicity. Now its a level playing field. And while teamwork is essential, its difficult to NOT be useful in some way, no matter what you're doing, and its pretty obvious what you need to be doing at any time due to smart design decisions.

Lobbies launch fast. Really fast. So fast that I get annoyed because I'm trying to play the silly little mini game. Online play has been seamless and lag free in matches with people from all over the world (another issue if there was voice chat: I don't speak Japanese).

There is ALWAYS something to do. No enemies? Shoot paint. Enemies? Shoot paint. In the lobby? Play the addictive mini game. The complete lack of down time keeps me playing far longer than I intended. Yes, you have to leave a lobby to change equipment, but you can jump right back in. This would only be annoying if playing with friends. And yes, it can be frustrating when you wind up on a team with four sniper rifles, but it makes for unique experiences that only have to last for three minutes. Besides, this game is fun win or lose.

Weapons are entertaining and balanced. Some require more of a learning curve than others, but I've seen all perform well. Others complain that there are only five maps and Nintendo limits these to two options every so many hours. But there isn't a single map that I dread playing. They're thought out and well designed. The player base has already learned the maps and that's a good thing. They've gated off more game modes until the player base has enough experience with the game. That's also a good thing. It won't be long before Nintendo releases free new content.

Ultimately, this is a game that I truly can appreciate. As a dad, I like that I can play a genre of game that I would otherwise not be able to have around my kid. As someone who burned out on shooters a long time ago, Splatoon is revitalizing. It seems silly, but Nintendo's little game about shooting paint may very well be my game of the year. Keep innovating, Nintendo.

Lack of stages is a problem, as well as modes, but there will be more of both every week or two weeks, so no need to worry about that. It is a highly recommended game that can stand on its own tentacles alongside Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. Expand

Nintendo definitely has a winner with this IP. They have turned the online shooter genre on its head with some really smart twists. Having the winning objective be covering the biggest area with your team's paint color instead of number of enemies shot changes everything.

After burning out of other shooter mainstreams such as Halo and COD this game comes as a breath of fresh air. The content is vast, given all the variables you can add to your gear, and the way the offline content links with the online content is genius. The way the single player content influences the online portion of the game is everything I wished Halo and COD would have done back in their heyday.
I have seen that most backlash to the game emphasize the lack of online chat. I honestly did not miss it, if I have any wishes to enhance the online play would be the ability to change your choice of weapon on respawn in case you found that you had too many of a particular type of weapon in your team.
This should be a system seller along with Super Smash Bros Wii U and Mario Kart Wii U...

I thought I'd want voice chat, but it's utterly not necessary, and in fact would get in the way. The action is incredibly fast-paced. You can see all of your teammates on the map and jump to them at will, and you know where you help is needed because this is a turf war, not a game purely based on killing other players. Killing it certainly a component, but frequently the team that focuses on kills loses the 3-minute match.

The only major issues I've had with it is a lack of single player content (Which there has been no hints of new content being added for single player), and low FPS in the lobby area. Despite the fact that they're goobers who can't play games like this (and in fact never have before), they're on winning teams, having fun, and the best part is I don't have to wonder about the message I'm sending by letting them shoot people in the face with machine guns, there's no cursing in the game dialogue (BF is the worst for this), and there's no squeakers filling the VOIP channel with insults, cursing, or racial epithets.

    This game is fantastic.

BTW, I don't know what it is, but the soundtrack is oddly infectious. From the weird little squid hip hop, to the really very groovy dub that plays during match setup.

Lastly, the weapon and gear customization is surprisingly in-depth. There's a decent amount of weapons and clothes that give you certain abilities as you level up, and you can really make a load-out your own.

But there is a MAJOR problem with the game currently, and that is how bare-bones it is in its current state.
So here's the rundown of the content in Splatoon. 3 minute online turf wars, singleplayer campaign, local 1v1 balloon battles, amiibo challenges, and only FIVE maps. You can't do 1v1 online against a friend, ranked battle is not out yet, no other game modes such as capture the flag or something like that, and there's only about one-third of the amount of maps acceptable for a $60 game. Now, keep in mind that there's going to be free content updates in the future. But for now it's a little bit short of content.

I'm enjoying Splatoon so much and have already played for 5+ hours in under a day, but my advice to you is to wait about 3 weeks- 2 months to buy it.

As for voice chat, it genuinely would not be suited to the game as it stands. Maybe if there are different modes in the future, or longer rounds, it would be useful. but, as is, it is not missed. The game is too fast-paced to make tactical decisions as a team.

This game really does find new and ingenious ways to play. Swimming along quickly, steathily, up walls, etc. You can creep up on people, go face on. Whatever you want.

The attention to detail is sublime, as the ink grabs what moves over it - players, weapons, whatever.

I love that teams get scrambled each round so that each game is different. The variety of weapons is great. Nothing I have come across yet is overpowered.

For once it's not about K:D ratio. You win the game by covering the map in paint, not by killing the most.

There are so many things this game does right, it's just so much fun.

As for what it does wrong:-

Can't choose weapons or kit between rounds.
Should have map selection feature like in Mario Kart 8.
Needs more game types (coming in a couple of months).

As for what it does right:-

    Small teams.
    Quick rounds.
    High energy.
    Fast-paced.
    Well-rounded.
    Balanced.
    Easy to pick-up.
    Hard to master.
    Looks great.
Use of gamepad is excellent (see the map covered in paint, launch to your teammates, etc).
Focus on the map and environment, not on kills, although kills help your team cover the map in paint.
    Lots of customisation.

    In short: BUY THIS GAME!

Theres a single player campaign that contains some imaginative and enjoyable boss fights but its overall fairly short and basic. Obviously the main attraction is the online multiplayer, but sadly right now it has only two game modes (and i'm being generous since its basically just ranked and unranked) and a mere 5 maps. The lack of maps is further exacerbated by the baffling decision to only make 2 of them available at any one time, switching it up to a fresh pair every few hours. Add to this the short length of the battles (3 minutes) and you are going to get familiar to the point of tedium with the maps very quickly. Whats more these maps are not especially huge, intricate or varied either. Theres the usual level progression, weapon upgrade etc stuff as well as headgear, shoes and shirts you can buy that come equipped with special abilites but overall its pretty shallow stuff. The lighting quick pace of the matches and the same two maps being repeated over and over especially makes it hard to really maintain interest for extended periods of time, feeling more like something you dip into casually for half an hour here and there.

I gave the game an extra point just due to the fact that the amount of content will increase over time. However at this very moment Splatoon is simply too one dimensional to justify being a full price purchase when held against the gaming world norms of 2015.

Nintendo made a straight up fun shooter and they pretty much streamlined how stealth could work in a videogame. This is Nintendo at its accentric best and while to some its not ideal, for those who embrace it, it is thoroughly charming and functional.

Splatoon turns everything on its head and this is likely because many modern gamers have been bought up with the same cookie cutter shooter experinces. The blueprint for these games has hardly changed and people take this for the "Norm!"

If the game gets the after launch care (Which is planned) with more gear, maps, weapons, stages etc... Then Nintendo have an absolute Gem of an IP.

The sound track is fun, the single player is a really creative platformer like adventure, and it's such a colorful and unique title like nothing else I have ever really played. Everything from the skater gear to the Nickelodeon like ooze that shoots from your gun has a lot of charm and it just has that bit of magic that can hook you from the get go with an interesting level of depth that can make even the most competitive gamers giddy with excitement.

I bought this game on launch day and tried out the trial, and it is the BEST new game Nintendo has put out in 14 years! Free online that actually works! Well done, Nintendo, this is a must buy!

In my time that I've played Splatoon., I can confidently say that it is a FUN game. Really fun. And while there is a lack of content, Nintendo does have plans to trickle that content into the game in the months to come, so we don't get so bored of it so quickly. But for the content that is available, it is top notch. The Turf Wars are quick, fun, fast-paced matches and leveling up my Inkling and customizing it's clothes and weapons are addicting. I'm always left wanting more clothing to mix and match to not only buff up my Inkling, but make them look stylish as well. Overall, I see great things in the future for this game. With a couple weeks of free DLC and new modes and such, this game is going to be a great success. Great job, Nintendo. (And for the people whining about voice chat: It doesn't need it.) Expand

There’s nothing else quite like it, nor the cathartic dopamine jolt to be had when you squid-skim up a paint-smeared quarter pipe, an Inkzooka at the ready, leap over the edge, take aim with your weapon, and reduce a startled opponent to goo.

We waited a bit before giving a vote to Splatoon, but after three months, the game is full of new weapons, has some awesome new modes, and it's still really, really fun. It's a WiiU killer app, one of those games that are not only extremely original, but so well made they utterly deserve a big and supporting community. If you have a WiiU and want an atypical shooter, this is the game for you.

Please don’t just look at the score and “meh” Splatoon, because this online shooter is the best thing that happened to Wii U in a long time. It just needs some major updates, because on arrival it’s just 75% of The Game of the Year. [09/2015, p.46]
