There's a lot of potential for Splatoon to become one of Nintendo's best new properties, but its first offering leaves a lot to be desired and is extremely light on content, usability, and basic features. The motion controls are awful and the kind of thing you would have expected designers to abandon after the early Wii days. The biggest issues with Splatoon's usability seems to stem from nobody actually trying to approach the game as a normal user would. You can't adjust game settings from in a level or even from within the single-player hub world. You have to quit out of the level and then out of the single player hub world to get back to the main hub world to change something as simple as the camera settings, but that forces you to re-watch an unskippable series of scenes where you're told about the available maps in multiplayer mode. Given the extremely limited number of stages, that's not even helpful. You're not allowed to actually select which stage you play on, so the fact that the stage icons show up on the screen where the game assigns you to a match does everything that scene does without the interruptions.
The characters themselves are super stylish and cool but their world is just kind of a simple cartoon Japan and doesn't carry the style through. I'd have much rather they created a world that fit these characters and was as unique as they are. I was expecting to build up to beaches or places where the ocean is crashing in or coral reefs encroaching onto dry land, but there's none of that. You never get any different weapons or abilities either, so even though the campaign is extremely short and you can beat in a day or two, it feels stale by the end. Story-wise, there's really no distinction between the good guys and bad guys. The bad guys are evil because they want to enslave some creatures to power their dying city, versus the good guys who want to enslave these creatures to power their thriving city. There's a good way to do the "we're not so different, you and I" plot, but the game doesn't seem to be aware of its hypocrisy or acknowledge it in any way. Plus, the Octolings have way better design than the Inklings so I found myself more attached to the bad guys than my own allies. The character themes don't gel or relate to the core game either. The game makes a point to call out that all the Inklings care about is fighting and fashion, but the final boss is a DJ so there's a weird disconnect there.
With such a minimalist single player campaign, you soon find yourself in multiplayer but it quickly wears thin. Multiplayer doesn't seem to have the faintest hint of any kind of matchmaking. When I was level 2, I was going up against a team of players ranging from levels 9 to 20 and in the 4v4 match, two of my teammates immediately dropped out. Your level limits what kind of weapons and loadouts you can have and also your stats and abilities. I'm sure none of the higher level players are happy when I show up because my rank means I'm using stock weapons and my stats are lousy. There's no pre-match interaction or set-up, so you can easily load into a battle where everybody is using the same weapon and nobody can play off strengths and weaknesses. You're not even allowed to change weapons between matches.
It's super grindy to unlock items for multiplayer but at the very end of a match, you can get a communication error and nobody will earn any experience and you get nothing for the match because even though you were transitioning to the results screen, the game counts it as a disconnect. There are only two maps per mode (and you're restricted to one mode until level 10), so the grind itself is incredibly tedious. I bought the game Thursday evening and by Saturday night I felt like I'd seen everything it had to offer minus unlocking new weapons that don't seem all that different and new stats from gear. I can only play three or four matches before turning the game off because it's getting tedious. I was really hoping that given the lessened focus on killing opponents, there would be some kind of cooperative mode where you're working together to fulfill a mission or join forces against a giant boss or something. Instead, it's just two modes with only two possible maps at a time each and lots of grinding. Even after all that grinding, there isn't much variety in the weapons, which is a place the game really could have shown off some style with Ratchet and Clank-levels of weirdness.
Splatoon feels like it could be the start of a great franchise thanks to the style the characters have, but it also feels like nobody considered how actual users would play the game, interact with menus, try to strategize or communicate with each other, or want different modes to play. If we find out that the game was supposed to be a Christmas release that was yanked up to summer to try to drive some interest in the Wii U and that's why it's so unpolished and bare bones, I would have no problems believing that.

The campaign is short but satisfying, the Boss Battles are unique and the Final boss is one of the hardest in gaming history.

The Splatfest are the best part of the game, engage in bloody battles to protect your favorite topics, from Dogs vs Cats to Transformers!!

No doubt, one of the best games on the WiiU and a system Seller.

A great game that demonstrates how games can provide longevity with more content, Splatoon's gameplay is an absolute blast to hear about, and a absolute blast to play. It's still got it's fair share of gripes (Rotation can be a double edge, horrible weapon balance), but it's definitely one of the best games I've played this year.

Splatoon is a very tactical shooter and it requires communication. there is also a poor variety of weapons and modes like I mentioned before. My biggest complaint is that when you have splitscreen there is only one mode you can do you which is balloon pop which sucks. there are only 2 players max for splitscreen and for online there are only 4 v 4. why not 5v5 or 6v6. this game still has a lot of potential but it still lacks tons of content there could be in this game Expand

When this game was announced I had a feeling I was going to enjoy it. But once I actually tried it, I was blown away. It looks amazing, plays great, and the multiplayer often becomes HIGHLY competitive (in a great way). This is, in my opinion, THE shooter (that isn't quite simply a shooter) to own on the Wii U!

It's to reliant on the internet:(. Every thing you do on it needs the internet and unfortunately not ever one has quick enough wifi to play the game. Like what about the people who live,in the country and don't get good enough reception how are they going to play? The only good thing I can say about the game (because I can't play it) is the colours.

To all the people who don't like this game because of the missing voice chat: Nintendo didn't build in a voice chat because they didn't wanted and they don't want that the players offend each other. So please stop hating this game because of that.

With the 2.0 update, this game is becoming so awesome.
The best is the character's design, the gameplay, the concept and the number of weapons to choose.
The worst, the campaign because it is too short and the fact that it does not have voice chat.
But, for me, is near to perfection. Thank you, Nintendo!

Unlocking and upgrading gear gives you something to work towards at all times. While it does have a few flaws (namely only two maps being in rotation in multiplayer at a time and not being able to switch load-outs without exiting your session), splatoon is a masterclass in putting a fun twist on an otherwise homogenous genre of games. Like, really good. I read some reviews claiming it’s very barebones for the high price and I can somehow see it, but now, when I write this review, this game got enough updates to put some meat on the bones and so it is clearly not an empty, hollow skeleton it was at the release, so… Right now, if you think about buying this, I rise a thumb up and recommend because SPLATOON is FUN.

The whole idea of making their very own online shooter that will be non-violent (as much as the genre allows!) was a daunting task to put it softly, and yet, they managed… The game is whimsical, colourful, funny and most importantly, ridiculously exhilarating, right now it is my #1 game for stress relief! Why? Let’s take a brief look…

    --- Look and Feel ---

The game looks like a candy! It’s absolutely beautiful in every possible way… Yes, it is not next-gen graphics, it does not strive for realism, it does not provide astonishing light effects and some mind-boggling details to focus on. It doesn’t have to, because it knows what it want to be. And it want to be a bright, enjoyable world full, bah, rich in colour and this light mood that makes you firmly believe that even if you do shoot others into explosive oblivion of ink, it’s more a game, a fun play than actual fighting and fierce competition. Characters are just charmingly cute, the details and rich choice of their customization through outfits adds a big and delicious touch of personality to each Squiddo…

Arenas are quite different from each other, well designed and most importantly, beautiful to look at! Even more attention to detail was put into… The ink! The whole painting the land process looks real, feels real and matched with great music and sounds effects give you this delightful “get dirty and wet with the paint” feeling. Animations are also on point, smooth, nice… Enjoyable.

This is a beautifully looking game in the very Nintendoish way. Bright, happy, colourful.

    --- Cogs and Gears ---

So, the game is still pretty bare, but bear with me (no pun intended… perhaps!). As for online multiplayer shooter it still lacks some essential tools, like the long awaited teamspeak which will never come due to two issues – first, there are no regional separation, and so you can have a mixture of all languages in a single team. Hoping all of them will talk English is selfish and vain. Secondly, and I understand Nintendo here, is the vile hatred and pure acid it would bring… Show me ONE online game in which players are polite, not-swearing wads. Nintendo want none of that in their colourful game on the consoles for families, right?

Putting that aside, the game still do not have rich selection of Arenas (it’s hardy Q3A…), the special abilities on the gear offers miniscule bonuses and the gear is made in such a way that any chance to make builds is horribly squandered and the weaponry, when quite balances, does not really offer anything extremely unique in feel. Which is fine, because thanks to that the games are more balanced. It might piss off hardcore players who expect game solely based on skill, but Splatoon never aimed to be “Nintendo variant of Quake”, but a light, quick shooter to have some fun. And they surely did that well.

    --- Fun Factor ---

Oh gosh… Plenty of that here! This game is insanely fun and basically thanks to this elusive and hard to define factor I am giving it such a high grade. On the first look it might feel a little wonky, a little empty in content, easy to burn through… And, on some level, this is true. However it is very important to notice, that even when you are piledriving through the game, it always remain extremely fun. Each fast paced match is thrilling and awesome. You very rarely feel that there are some defeats that you cannot win through if you pull your act together (and usually it happens only if one of your team member is AFK or disconnect). Even the repetitive maps have surprisingly high refresh rate, as you rarely focus on the arena alone, and more on the fast paced play going on, trying to cover it all in ink and splat some fools that come to your sight… Even extremely simple and straightforward single player campaign is so fast-paced and breakneck you do not really find yourself thinking “well, this is dumb” but rather “woo-hee, here we go!”.
All in All, Splatfest is growing nicely. New maps, new modes, new weaponry is coming as we speak, the game expands… And I still continue to love it and I feel better if during a day I burn 30-40 minutes splashing ink around.

I like how there's festivals (splat fest) but I still feel like there where still connection issues even after the delay... I don't think a 1vs.4 match is fair, but otherwise it's a good game.

Splatoon has totally revolutionized the shooter genre, with it's amazing paint based mechanics, and has delivered a knockout blow to the endless stream of cookie-cutter, rehashed games appearing on the other consoles.

This is hands down the best game of the year. If you own a Wii U, you MUST own this game.

Here's my review, I'm going to pick at some criticism of people on this game and give my own thoughts. I bought this game at the EU retail price of $35 (like captain toad), which I think is a steal considering how much content this game is getting and how long you can stay invested in it.

Here's my review, I'm going to pick at some criticism of people on this game and give my own thoughts. I bought this game at the EU retail price of $35 (like captain toad), which I think is a steal considering how much content this game is getting and how long you can stay invested in it.

1: The game has no voice chat
Because we all know how nice it is to be cursed out by squeaky 12-year-old boys (implied sarcasm). Nintendo wants to keep player-to-player interaction to a minimum for obvious child safety and profanity reasons. Putting open voice chat on Splatoon would ruin Nintendo's reputation. However, I do not understand why they don't allow it for friends who are playing together like in Smash. Maybe they will patch it in sometime in the future.

    2: No party system
You can join your friends if they are playing a game, but your teams are assigned randomly to avoid good players herding together and destroying all randomly selected opposition. I think this is a great design choice. In the coming expansion players will be able to go versus against pre-assembled teams, outside of the random lobby.

3: You can't switch your loadout during a match
In fact you can't do anything during a match, not even adjust your camera sensitivity. Why? Because you are playing a match and you should focus on playing and learning your weapon load-out. I think it's an excellent way to keep players in the game somewhat forcefully and make them learn how to play their weapon. If you allow people to change their load-out during games, it will be a constant schizophrenic mess of people testing weapons and then throwing them in the corner as soon as they get splatted.

4: The single player is short
Well of course it is, as this is a completely multiplayer centric game. Considering some weapons require you to beat the single-player campaign I'm actually glad that it's short.

Thinking back on how relatively incomplete this game launched and its pricing, I'm also suspecting a completely rushed launch. The number of maps was lacking and the game has constant connection issues. The lag is atrocious at times. This ends up with the server often deciding that two people splatted each other at the same time, or that you get splatted by a sniper without even seeing the aim pointer.

What it boils down to are the fun mechanics. You paint the floor, and the enemy can't walk in it. This makes the front lines of the battle and any enemy movement clearly visible. The respawn times are short and you can "jump" to your allies by simply touching the game pad. There is simply no end to the pvp if you don't want it to. Speaking of the game pad, as a mouse guy I love the precision that motion controls offer me.

There are as many play styles as there are weapons in this game. Trying to learn them and optimize them with the right clothing boosts is a lot of fun to me. The clothing is equipped with a main skill boost and up to 3 sub skill boosts. The same clothing will always have the same main boost, but the sub boosts are assigned randomly. Three sub-skill boosts combined make up for one main skill boost.
You can re-roll these random slots, so creating a set of clothing for a particular weapon and play style is highly beneficial in my opinion.

You can sink a lot of time into this game. I keep finding myself coming back to it and the total playtime is up there with smash. The game is certainly lacking in local multiplayer options, but I suspect they will do more for this in the future. The core game is very solid, completely unique and fun. Leave the devs to simmer a little longer if your shops are asking $60, but at $40 and below it is absolutely worth it.

Don't underestimate these cute Squids because they can pack quite a punch!
You have a choice between a Boy or Girl inkling, while most people go with the girl I chosen the boy because I am in reality a boy. After you pick your eye and skin color ypu are dropped into a easy to learn tutorial. You can choose to have Stick or Motion controls but I went with the motion controls because I think it has a rather smooth Sensitivity and feel to it. After beating the tutorial you are dropped into Inkopolis the central hub of Splatoon. Here you can buy weapons and gear from the 4 major stores or check in with the Squid Sisters. And this is were your journey begins. In my opinion I'll give this game a 9 out of 10 for it's multiplay and a 7 out of time for the single player.
Multiplayer is Really fun and addicting and could waste alot of your time. Many critics Complain about the lack of content but with August update that adds more Clothes, weapons, better matchmaker, and a level increase from 20 to 50 I would highly recommend this game if you came here for the multiplayer. But if you came for the Single Player you will be a bit dissapointed with the lack of content in single player. Overall I'll will give this game a 9 out of 10!

I can safely say that the answer to that is a complex one. Splatoon is a really well made game, designed to be accessible for kids but still fun enough for the ‘hardcores’ to get into it. During my time with it, I became totally invested. I played the entirety of the singleplayer, found all the collectible sunken scrolls that show backstory, did half of the Amiibo challenges I’d unlockedI can safely say that the answer to that is a complex one. Splatoon is a really well made game, designed to be accessible for kids but still fun enough for the ‘hardcores’ to get into it. During my time with it, I became totally invested. I played the entirety of the singleplayer, found all the collectible sunken scrolls that show backstory, did half of the Amiibo challenges I’d unlocked and played up to level 10 online, with various weapons.

So let’s break it down. The core of Splatoon is all about the competitive online multiplayer. When you boot up the game you design your Inkling and are then immediately encouraged to head into the multiplayer. There are currently two gamemodes – Turf War, a deathmatch-like mode where the real goal is to cover as much of the ground with your colour ink as possible, and the (currently ranked-only gamemode) Splat Zone, where you have to capture and hold two zones. Unfortunately the ranked mode is currently locked away until enough people have been playing the game and hit level 10. A huge and essential mechanic in battles is that you can squid jump to a teammate, letting you quickly travel into the heat of battle. No waiting around or slowly travelling to where you want to be – see a teammate on the Wii U gamepad and -WHEEEEEE- squid jump over there! The action is fast paced, the matches are short (only 3 minutes), it’s a perfect combo. Swimming through the ink is also a hugely important feature that speeds up your squid by a ton – but watch out, you can’t swim through your opponent’s ink!

One thing I don’t quite enjoy about the multiplayer is how maps are handled. There’s plenty of maps available, but they’re on a constant rotation of two at a time every two hours. This is of course just my preference, and I haven’t really seen anyone else complaining about this. When the maps change, you get a quick and quirky cut-scene with Callie and Marie, the fabulous Squid Sisters who are essentially squid celebrities. These two characters are great, oozing personality and charm. You can even find their studio in the main hub of Splatoon and see them – they sometimes even wave at you.

You start the game at level 1, with a standard ink shooter and low-level clothing. But fret not! You might feel like a squid in a barrel at first but after a couple matches and a few levels up, you’ll be the jetting to the top. There’s three unique weapon types; roller, charger and shooter. Chargers are sniper rifle-like weapons that require a brief charge before firing. Rollers are basically paint rollers that cover a huge part of the ground in ink as you move forward – you can also flick ink at your opponents with a quick tap of the fire button. Finally, the shooters are the generic ink guns. They come with all kinds of stat changes, such as with rapid fire or explosive ink shot abilities. My preference is the roller type weapons, but there’s a handful of shooters that I find exceptionally fun to use.

You’ve also got the sub weapons. These include various kinds of bombs, homing bombs and support items like splash walls that allow you to fire out of them but don’t let opponents fire in. One of my personal favourites was the Squid Beacon that allows you and your team to squid jump to wherever you place it. The final part of your arsenal is special weapons. These include Inkzookas (self-explanatory right?), and the Bubbler, a bubble shield that blocks attacks for a short period of time. These are all in one loadout that can’t be changed. When you select a weapon, it comes with the sub and special weapons – this system is brilliant, it evenly levels the playing field for everyone and means that you have to play to that loadout’s strengths

Your clothing is completely customizable though. You can mix, match or look completely odd, it’s all up to you. There’s a huge variety of clothing including actual Japanese branded clothing, and you can also unlock a handful of clothing and weaponry from the singleplayer and amiibo challenges

The singleplayer is a series of 25 levels and 5 bosses against a mysterious enemy known as the Octolings. Each level has a hidden scroll that tells you more about the world of Splatoon, whereas each boss gives you a blueprint for a new, custom weapon. I’ll avoid spoilers so I won’t specify, but completing the game gives you two full sets of clothing (three pieces per set, 6 pieces per set).

The singleplayer levels are very impressive though. Despite the campaign’s short runtime of about 2 to 3 hours, each level brings a new mechanic to the table and then experiments with it. For example, one level brings in the sponge block that you can fill with ink to expand it. Later, you have to use a path of them to traverse a gap. In later levels, you’ll have to climb sponge blocks while fighting off enemies that can shrink the blocks back d

I check my ammo, find that it’s adequate, and take a deep breath. Finally, I leave cover with all guns blazing. Then I get squashed by a paint roller. My killer gives a resounding cry of “Yeah!” and continues his rampage. Splatoon is a game unlike any other, to put it in layman’s terms. It’s the first original game from Nintendo in 14 years and its first shooter, and it certainly shows it in the amount of fun I’ve had with it both online and off. But is it worth a purchase, and is it worth picking up the failing Wii U console for?

Splatoon takes place in a post-apocalyptic future in which the Earth is populated by half-human, half-squid/octopus hybrids, called Squidlings, and one where warfare is fought with ink. Its cities and people take after Japanese architecture and conventions, and the biggest craze amongst young Squidlings is a sport called “Turf War.” In it, two teams of four scramble to cover as much of the arena (but only the floors, mind you) in their team’s colour using all sorts of weird and wacky ink-based weapons. Either that or you can simply shoot the enemy themselves to make them explode in a satisfying splat. Don’t rely on this too much though, as enemy ink will slow you down and make you more vulnerable to damage. It doesn’t match your outfit, either. They change between a Kid form and a Squid form as well, which buries them inside the ink, making them go fast (I hear the red paint makes you go faster), or concealing them entirely if you stand still. Jumping out of ink in an ambush is incredibly fun, and makes you feel like some kind of jungle warrior. This crazy hobby is how you’ll be playing the online component for the time being, but this mechanic of colour-based combat carries over to the single-player modes as well.

The single-player campaign centers around your squidling, who has been recruited in secret, and rather hastily, into a one-squid army dedicated to stopping the nefarious plans of the Octolings. The Octolings resent the Squidlings for winning a war long ago, and want to take revenge. They do this by capturing Zapfish: Small, sad-looking things which power the Squidling’s civilisation. These Zapfish are recaptured at the end of each level, and you need all of them in a level zone before moving on to the next one. But the last Zapfish in each zone is guarded by a boss, and they’re some of the most well-designed bosses I’ve seen in a long time. Each of them is difficult enough to feel like a challenge, but not too hard to feel frustrating. The final boss in particular was a real toughie!

This lack of seriousness can be seen in the game’s visual style and soundtrack as well. It’s refreshing to see colour be used as a primary mechanic in a shooter, and the overall aesthetic of the game is bright and imaginative. The soundtrack is also sublime, and one I’ve already downloaded! It sounds like a mix between Musato Muzika’s Crash Bandicoot 2 soundtrack, 70s British punk rock, and human music. These components all add to the overall originality that the game has to offer, and proves that Nintendo’s still got it when it comes to ideas.

Splatoon is a game that the Wii U desperately needed. It is an original IP that breathes fresh air into a stale genre and a game that makes Amiibo purchases viable (if arguably mandatory). It’s certainly a fantastic online game, but it’s nothing worth buying a Wii U exclusively for. If you already have one you have no excuse not to pick this up, but this won’t make you leap off the fence in order to take the dip and buy one. The Wii U needs a few more games like this in order to do that, but it’s a step in the right direction. I just hope that the next game (and let’s face it, there’s gonna be another one) improves on the formula and doesn’t make the same mistakes this one did. But for now, it’s one of the Wii U’s strongest titles and one of the most fun games you’ll play this year.

The game concept is *fresh*(haha, see what I did there?), it's innovative, it's not JUST another shooter. I will list a few problems with the game:
    - Limited content: Splatoon started out as only 1.8 Gigs, but free DLC (Not really DLC, you don't have to download anything) comes almost regularly.
    - Online Communication Failures: You're in a Turf War/Ranked Battle, only to find out one of your teammates got disconnected, this happens a lot.
    - Splatfest: DEAR GOD, SPLATFEST. The concept is great: Two teams will fight for 24 hours, to get their team the most points possible. Here's the issue: Popularity of one team counts towards total points. During the second splatfest, our team would've won 52% to 48% if it hadn't been for Popularity of the other team (which was 63% to 37%). Also, the matchmaking isn't really good for splatfest. Which brings me to my next point:
    - Matchmaking: Does this even exist? The teams are chosen at random, yes, at random. 4 Rollers VS 4 Ranged can very well happen, You can be stuck with beginner while the other team is at max level, and due to connection issues, YOU CAN GET OUTNUMBERED BY THE OPPOSING TEAM (max 4 on both teams).

Besides that... Splatoon is an amazing, addicting game! If you're not that good at 3rd person shooters, there's still an option for you: The Roller. The Max Level is 20, which may be low, but it takes a good while to get there. The music in this game is amazing, there's nothing really quite like it. The game's single player is FANTASTIC. I recommend playing it, especially if you're new to 3rd person shooters. It's not easy, but not too difficult.

I would give this game an 8.5, but Metacritic doesn't let me.

Splatoon was a disappointment, sadly. I had high hopes for this game due to all the hype surrounding it, but I was really let down. Lesson learned: (again?) Don't trust the hype for online shooters.

    ONLINE GAMEPLAY:
Everything is level gated, Players of max level have an enormous advantage in equipment and weapon choice.

You have no freedom of choice to choose the map you would like to play, you are limited to two maps every few hours of which one is selected for you at random. If you don't like those maps, too bad? Come back later? Not an acceptable answer in my opinion.

Weaponry comes in sets, this means you are often stuck with a sub-weapon or special you don't enjoy using just because you like the main weapon, there is no option to customize the sets.

Supers are attached to weapon sets and can be amazing (the kraken - invincible and instakills) or completely useless (killer wail- gives too much warning)

Matchmaking is completely random and you will frequently end up fighting against players who have maxed out their rank and are wearing finely tuned gear even though you just started playing.

Customization of your look is almost non-existent, as you must choose your clothes based on the primary bonuses they provide. Almost everyone seems to be wearing gas masks, camo hats, and blue moto boots.

You are not rewarded based on your individual progress so much as on if your team of random people were able to collaborate better than the enemy team, you receive a large point and money bonus based on victory or losses, so if you had the highest score but your team was asleep, you are punished. This is especially the case during the mandatory event "splatfest" where you are awarded half the splatfest rank points for losing than winning, and if your overall team loses the event you receive half the upgrade items that the winning team did.

There are a few obvious contenders for "Best Weapon" in the game, so you see these weapons in almost every match. Aerospray, Gal, and Carbon roller come to mind.

Most weapons are one or two shot kills, so often confrontations are all about "who was behind who" or "who has longer range than who"

Splatfest events ARE MANDATORY. YOU MUST HAVE MANDATORY FUN CITIZEN. NO YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY OTHER MODES DURING THIS TIME OF MANDATORY FUN.

    SOUND:
I hope you like unintelligible "squid-pop" consisting of an annoying high pitched nonsense language, and the same few songs OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

No voice chat for friends or premade groups. Hope you have skype or teamspeak!

    VISUALS:
Not bad, the graphics look pretty good on this Wii-U title. You don't get much time to admire them in the actual game mode though since every second not smearing everything in your color coded ink is essentially defeat.

    ONLINE CONNECTION ISSUES:
Unless you have a very fast internet connection you WILL have problems with Splatoon.

Connection lost, "why isn't my ink showing up" and "why is everything the enemy's color now it was mine a nanosecond ago" were frequent problems, especially when playing with people who were obviously overseas.

Requires an always on internet connection to access most options such as stores.

    SINGLE PLAYER GAMEPLAY:
Probably the best part of Splatoon, but sadly very short and you can 100% finish it in an afternoon.

Normal enemies are ridiculously easy as they are COMPLETELY unaware of your presence if all you do is hold the squid form button and throw grenades. Bosses are the only challenge, and those are still rather easy to defeat. The final boss however does become almost tedious by the time you reach his final form.

The weapons in this mode actually feel really good and you can customize your loadout, as well as upgrade it.

Content is locked behind the purchase of three specific amiibos, your collection of amiibos besides these will do nothing, so much for first party games supporting your amiibos.

    FINAL WORDS:
I am glad nintendo is trying new things, but I would like it if they took the time to review other games of the genre they are getting into and perhaps cut out the really bad bits such as leveling up in an online multiplayer versus game.

If they just have to keep levels in, then perhaps they should gate off maximum level players from playing against people who just started, and some kind of score based matchmaking system that does not pair you with W33DG0KU420 who is too busy doing bong rips to touch his controller VS a team consisting of maximum level players from japan who've had a long time to practice at this game and are almost guaranteed to cause weird lag shenanigans. VERDICT: Rent/Borrow. Enjoy the single player mode for an afternoon, ignore the online component. Do not buy.

Splatoon is gaming at it's best: It dares to be different, it doesn;t try to hard to make sense, it gives the middle finger to realism and focuses solely on pure fun.
The online works almost flawlessly and wait times are very tolerable.
Reviewing this 2 months after release it is safe to say Nintendo made good on their promise to release more content and releases of new levels and weapons continues to flow. Splatfests, occasional competitive events are a hoot too.

Now, you have CoD, your standard shooter, where you shoot with no particular goal to follow other than to shoot people, but Splatoon, on the other hand, is a game where shooting people isn't the goal of the battle. If you don't know, Splatoon's main mode involves you spreading your ink to cover turf, and the team with more area covered by the end of the match wins. On top of that, you can swim through your own ink as a squid to go faster, and covering ink also gets you cash that you can spend on weapons and gear, and it levels up your gear and your Inkling (That's your player by the way). The game also has a one-on-one multiplayer mode, but I didn't find it to be too fun, because first off, the objective of the mode itself is boring, and you can only choose from a predetermined weapon and gear setup. The game also comes with a single player mode where you can even unlock new weapons, but it didn't last me that long. If you manage to level up to level 10, you can participate in Ranked Battles online, and if you can manage the insanity, you'll be rewarded with a huuuuuuge amount of in-game money. If you can't, then you've wasted your time and you get nothing. But the game as a whole offers a huge amount of variety, and even if you manage to get everything, achieve level 20, beat story mode with all upgraded equipment and all the scrolls, and get to rank A+, I bet you could still have the urge to keep on playing the game. Auch die Auswahl zwischen Standardkampf und Rangkampf finde ich persönlich als ziemlich gut. Was mich beeindruckt ist, dass man diesem Spiel auch einen Funken "Jugendslang" verpasst hat. 2. Lack of content. The selection of ink guns is decent...fairy average in-fact with most 'shooters', but other gear and maps is lackluster. You can buy different gear through amiibo...thankfully this at-least isn't pay2win.
    3. Matchmaking. When you manage to get into a server, (extra busy on saturdays), you will likely find yourself on completely imbalanced teams. This is assume everyone actually connects, which seems to be an issue about 5% the time. Other cannot join to balance out the teams once the match has started...so be thankful it will only last 3-5 mins.
    4. Don't like the music? Too bad, you have no option to turn it off.

There are a fair bit of positives to the game as-well...like originality, nostalgia (if you enjoyed water/paint gun fights) and cute factor. Other than that, this is not a $60 game...it's worth 30-40 at best.

The lack of face-to-face interaction generally means I simply don't have as much fun as when I gather friends on my living room to play, for example, extended sessions of Super Smash Bros. What I am big on, however, is great gameplay, and in that regard Splatoon made me a believer. Thirty-five hours in, I'm utterly enthralled by its endless stream of addictive three-minute ink-shooting matches, and I'm convinced this new franchise is going to be a massive player in the Nintendo IP roster going forward.

As you're probably aware, Splatoon is a third person shooter with a focus on online multiplayer matches. When it comes to shooters, however, I don't think there's ever been anything that plays quite like it. You play as inklings, squid-human hybrids that shoot ink instead of bullets, and while you can (and certainly should) shoot opposing players, the focus is on covering the battlefield with ink. It's a genius approach for a couple of reasons: first, because it positions the shooter genre into Nintendo's family-friendly approach in a convincing and utterly addictive way. Secondly, the "shoot the environment" mechanic is a great way to make novice players feel useful even in a highly competitive environment, as it's more about clever strategy than it is about precise aiming.

Splatoon was launched with only one online multiplayer mode (called "Turf Wars"), but has since gotten several free updates. As I write this, there are two other online modes available, with a few more planned for the next months. At this point, we have already experienced a "Splatfest": an online event that makes players pick sides and battle it out for their team on a big day-long stravaganza. All of this makes the game feel like a living, breathing thing, rewarding early adopters and keeping the hype ball rolling well beyond release. It's a smart strategy that has been compelling me to keep playing.

Of course, the game also has an offline side: it consists of around thirty levels of inkling war against their hated octoling enemies. The level design is simply astonishing, throwing loads of clever twists on the ink-shooting formula as stages go on. There's an overworld to explore and find new stages, but most of those stages are very linear; some, however, are more open affairs, in which your character has to fight octolings in larger environments much like the online multiplayer modes. It's a mixture that certainly works, even if I'd have preferred more of the latter than the former.

The single-player mode has another crowning jewel, though: the boss fights. They are five overall, and they're all so entertaining that I got genuinely surprised. When it came to the final boss battle, my expectations were through the roof... yet the game somehow managed to surpass them entirely. I won't spoil anything here, but suffice it to say that it's a lenghty, challenging, and massively fun war against what's probably my favorite character in the entire game. It's probably a bit early to say, but I'm guessing I'll forever look back to it as one of my favorite boss fights of all time.

There have been criticism thrown at some of the game's quirks, such as the lack of online voice chat (which would be useful to some, even if it's not really my thing) or the poor local multiplayer options (and I fully believe a Goldeneye 007-like four-player split-screen mode could be absolutely fantastic). Taken for what it is, however, Splatoon is nothing short of a rousing success for Nintendo. It's innovative, it's addictive, it's got great graphics and music, and this is why it's probably one of the games people will always bring up in the future whenever talking about the Wii U. If you're on the fence, absolutely give it a shot.

These wonderful aspects are buried in issues. For starters, it is a game based on teamwork with no ability to communicate. It's sort of like driving a car with no wheels. The weapons are great, but really imbalanced. So all of that work, and clearly there was a lot, in making each series of weapon unique and interesting is wasted by having to favor the same handful of weapons over and over. The servers are another major issue. Maybe this is because of the wireless-only feature of the wii u, but at peak hours both for the US and Japan the servers disconnect about 60-75% of the time. I'm buying a USB adapter and hoping this will help, but it is absolutely not an issue with my internet. I've checked it in every way possible and this only occurs in this game, none others. Admittedly, when I first heard of Splatoon, I wasn't that excited for it. I've never been a big fan of shooters, and generally I'll only play them if I enjoy the storyline and characters. I've never been a big fan of shooters, and generally I'll only play them if I enjoy the storyline and characters. Splatoon truly is unlike any other shooter I've played though. People accurately describe the online multiplayer as the Mario Kart of shooters, but I would equate the single player mode more to Mario Galaxy, for some fairly obvious reasons.

The single-player mode felt overlooked at first, as the game starts you off by urging you to go to the multiplayer lobby and merely mentioning a "weird old dude" off in a corner of the hub map. Once you go there, though, a funny and irreverent story begins, and you're suddenly out to save Inkopolis. Along the way, you can pick up orbs that go toward upgrading your weapon suite and collect scrolls that both provide you with some history regarding the game world and blueprints for weapons you can later purchase for online play. The story also culminates in a surprisingly tough final boss fight that is extremely fun and satisfying, albeit a bit repetitive.

The story mode is not perfect, though. The levels are wildly creative and a blast to, well, blast through, but the story is over after only a few hours. Luckily, you can add new challenge modes with Splatoon Amiibo support, but this is something I've yet to try, and needing to purchase a separate set of figurines to unlock (admittedly very worthwhile, or so I hear) content could be a turn-off for many. Another sticking point with single-player is that you're forced to use the same gear and weapons all throughout, so all those different guns and pieces of gear you can purchase and use online are forever barred from single-player, which makes it feel limiting. What single-player does have over multiplayer though is creativity. Actually, a lot of common things you'll see in single-player will never show up in multiplayer at all. Lastly, although the story is fun and goofy, there's absolutely no weight to it at all. It feels like you're just going through some practice grounds and honing your skills while the occasional boss comes along to get in your way. Your goal is to save Inkopolis, but you never really feel like you're actually doing that.

On to multiplayer, where the vast majority of play time will be spent. I'm one of those people who looks at lack of voice chat as a blessing. We've learned with voice chat can be like from the likes of other popular shooters like Halo and CoD, and I'm of the opinion that it's not a bad idea to avoid that here. Online can be hit or miss I think. For one, you can't even start purchasing new gear until you hit level 4, which involves participating in a number of online matches. Level 4 comes quickly at least, and it's offset by the fact that you need to do online battles to gather money to purchase new gear in the first place. The real sticking point is the lack of variety in maps and modes, especially early on. Until you hit level 10, which can take a while, you can only participate in Turf Wars. Turf Wars are fun, quick matches where two teams of four battle to cover the highest percentage of the ground in their team's color of ink. Inking walls does not count toward the percentage, but can be a good help for reaching unclaimed or enemy territory. This, and the other online mode, is a lot of fun because it flips the script on what's deemed important in the shooter: not gunning down your enemies at every opportunity, but rather claiming more control of the land than your enemies. It's a refreshing mechanic that can easily appeal to players who aren't too fond of typical shooters, like myself. "Splatting" other players can still give you a nice benefit or two though, like getting them out of the area for a few seconds, and when you splat someone, an explosion of your team's ink bursts forth from them, potentially helping you cover extra land. When it comes to the results screen though, amounts of splatting, whether you were splatted or doing the splatting, is relegated to a minor sidebar that has no bearing on how well you did in the match.

The other mode, a "king-of-the-hill" style game, is basically the same as a Turf War, except the war is over one or two particular areas of a map. This mode can only be achieved after hitting level 10, which unlocks Ranked Battles where this mode appears.

On the negative side, there are a scant amount of multiplayer maps. I haven't counted, but I think there are only 8, and the maps rotate every few hours for some reason, so you're stuck with 2 for Turf Wars and 2 for ranked battles until the game switches them again. This lack of variety makes playing online a bit of a drag after a while, especially if you're stuck with maps you're not too fond of.

All that said, Splatoon is a very fun and creative game. It feels rather lacking so far unfortunately, but never have I had so much fun and felt more joy playing a shooter before picking up Splatoon.

Splatoon does everything it can to show the cold, stagnant winter release lineup that it isn't afraid to splash in its own territory.

Splatoon isn't without its issues however, there are less options in this game, for instance you can't change weapons mid-game or in the lobby, there also isn't voice chat and there are less maps out right now. Nintendo said they would be dropping more content soon. This issues are minor given how awesome and new this game is. Instead of soldiers, we have squid-like human characters and they shoot ink, not bullets. However, this game is not unique by how it looks, but the gameplay is very different from the offerings in the genre. The main online mode called ''Turf War'', put two teams of four people to battle themselves and the winner will be not the one that kills the most, but the one that paint the scenario the most! but even not counting points, killing is very important to bring an opponent back to the spawn point to retard their work, and to help to do that, there's a lot of ''Mario Kart'' like items such as a rocket that hit the ground exploding ink or a invincible giant squids that kills by just touching the opponent. Those items vary according to the weapon the player choose.
So it's a fun, original and very simple concept, that's easy to pick but involves some strategy to succeed. I had and i'm still having a blast playing the online matches, but i can't help noticing how limited are the online options. Why i can't create tournaments like Mario Kart 8 or choose the team i want to join? Fix it Nintendo! Otherwise Splatoon multi-player would flawless.

To conclude, even been a online multi-player focused game, Splatoon also has an amazing (and short) single-player campaign, that use the mechanics from the multi-player but in a different style, a mix of platforming/shooter, with lot of cool levels, ideas and bosses.

Go get Splatoon! It's simple, fresh and fun. Call of Duty fans, don't get intimidated by the cutesy of the squids, give it a chance.

I will admit that I am very disappointed my the local multiplayer the game currently has. The Battle Dojo would be so much more fun if it could be 4 player or more local co-op. If it was on online option as well that would be cool too. My hope is that in August the game will have that aspect improved.

I have had very little with connectivity for online ranked or non-ranked matches. About 3-4 times I got the boot but it is rare. Most of the times I only wait 1 min at most to begin the match.

The single player campaign was tons of fun. The final boss was tough and enjoyable to defeat. Oh and great music too!

The amiibo content was also tons of fun. I have beat all the levels with the amiibos except for the final boss with the long range weapon. I really really wish this content was not locked behind the amiibos but I knew I was going to get the 3 pack so I knew I would have access to the content from day 1.

I wish the single player campaign could have at least been local co-op too. My son would have had tons of fun playing with me instead of watching me. He had a tough time with some of the levels so playing with him at the same time would have helped him big time.

Bottom line: If you own a Wii U and you like shooters, buying Splatoon is a no-brainer. If you don't have a Wii U, this game + Mario 3D World + Bayonetta 2 + Mario Kart 8 means it is time to buy one.

Their new IP shows of impressive graphics, mostly tight controls (the jump button feels poorly placed and optional gyroscope aiming is a touch awkward and gimmicky), and addictive matches. With a interesting twist on how you compete Nintendo has brought gamers a shooter that is both unique and fun even if some issues get in the way.

With the focus of the game being on multiplayer the campaign isn't all that exciting. It basically just serves as a way to show off the game's shooting mechanics. It's solid all around, but outside of the boss battles there isn't that much exciting going on. It's brief, easy, and it doesn't take long until you notice the repetition starting to set in. Not even the enemy Octolings which have the same powers you do are all that interesting to fight. They are just as easily blown away. The huge boss battles are quite fun even if they are just a brief and easy as the rest of the game. The exception to this is the final boss which suffers due to dragging on for too long. Toppling these giant bosses is a treat and I wanted more from the game in that department.

Overall the campaign in decent, but not terribly remarkable in any way. Probably the most disappointing part though is that it, along with the game as a whole, lacks any sort of personality. There are characters and a very thin story, but both just come off as intrusive and uninteresting. "Inkopolis News" is the worst offender and is just plain annoying. With no way to turn it off or skip it I'm left mashing the A in order to skip all the dialog and get through it as quickly as I can. While the stylistic vibe of the game doesn't give it much of a personality (which is a big disappointment for a Nintendo game) it does add some unique features to the gameplay. Specifically the multiplayer portion.

Like I said before the focus is on the multiplayer and that is where the game delivers. The game's brief matches will have you jumping back in again and again. The goal of matches is not to shoot the other people, but to shoot the ground. Whichever team covers the map with more ink wins. Obviously you are able to shoot other players and "splat" them, but this new twist on how you approach matches gives the game a unique feel that makes it more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been. Matches reward you with coins and experience, both a which are used to get your hands on new gear.

The game puts a lot of emphasis on fashion. However buying new clothes for you character is more than just a way to look different than other players. Each item of clothing comes with special perks like increased ink storage or faster movement which will help you create a play-style that suits you. The same goes for weapons. Choose the giant paint roller and you've got a character more suited to covering as much of the map as possible as opposed to combat. Choose the "Shickling" sniper riffle and you'll be more effective as a player who takes out enemies from afar while other players focus on inking the map.

All of this versatility along with regular "Splatfest" events make for a very fun multiplayer experience that can and most likely will keep you coming back. Especially with the promise of more content coming in the way of free DLC. A few odd little missteps here and there like the lack of voice chat are noticeable, but don't ruin the experience. The map being included on the gamepad sounds lie it would be more useful at first, but then you realize that all it will do is pull you out of the action by taking you eyes off of the screen. Games like COD and Halo have done the exact same thing the gamepad does here, only onscreen right in the corner. I never used this gamepad feature once outside of spawning on my teammates location after being splatted. The lack of VC isn't a huge issue, but it would have made this team-based shooter a little more satisfying had they given gamers the tools to communicate and come up with effective strategies. Overall though it's not really a noticeable non-inclusion.

While a few minor missteps, a disappointing campaign, and missing personality do bring the game down they don't change the fact that "Splatoon" is an all around good game. It's a fun twist on the multiplayer shooter genre and has the potential to be incredibly addicting. While I wouldn't say it's worth buying a Wii U for this is definitely a game very Wii U owner should have in their library.

    I give Splatoon a 7.9/10.

The multiplayer is just amazingly fun, you can play over and over just for fun or on a more competitive level with great dept.

Some may argue the content seems "lacking" but there is a good reason for that, Nintendo is steadily releasing new content (maps, weapons, events) every now and then to keep the game fresh, Also there is no game in game voice chat, but there is really no need for that.

If you want a great meaningful story you won't find that in Splatoon, but if you want cleverly fun mechanics, wacky characters, and lag free, fun, competitive multiplayer this game is for you.

You can reach max level in multiplayer in about a day and a half of decent play time. There's no skill or rank based matchmaking so fresh level 1's can find themselves dominated by a team full of level 19's and 20's with everything unlocked in the game. Spawn camping is easy to do on several maps (the skatepark, for example) with roller and inkbrush spam. Nintendo has opened up two new maps but there's still only a total of 7 and you can only ever play 2 per mode per 4 hours. Since the game pairs you up with no regard to location, rank, or skill, the lag is absolutely horrendous as you end up with players from all corners of the globe. No real transparency on the scoring system means the map might look like your team has won but, in reality, the other team beat you by several percent. Vendor gear resets every 24 hours and after a few days you'll start seeing repeats. The first Splatfest is coming next weekend but it only lasts 24 hours! Single player is novel but also short. Easy to beat in one session if you really wanted to. This doesn't even get into the $35 amiibo paywall for more single player content.

It's colorful and charming for a while but ultimately shallow and vapid.
By the time the August Update hits only the diehards will be left.

Splatoon is very exciting, original, and tons of fun to play. However, it isn't perfect in design choices. Just so you get a taste of my gaming experience, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy, and I've had extensive experience with other multiplayer shooters such as competitively playing Gears of War and Halo, and having spent a fair amount of time with other shooters as well. That being said, Splatoon is a huge breath of fresh air and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise and stop you from trying this game. If you're reading this, you most likely know the way the game plays and all those details so I won't bother going into that. Just know the game feels great and there's tons of weapon variety and such to change the way you play. Now let's address some flaws. Some say this game lacks content. I have been one of these people but now that I've seen Nintendo's actual approach I no longer believe so. Let me just start by saying I'm not particularly a fan of the approach they took at launch and these past 2 weeks, but there is sufficient content now at the moment of typing. So the thing is, Nintendo had 9 maps, 4 (I think) other weapons, and a 3rd mode finished at the time of launch, they just decided they'd rather release it over time. In the last 2 weeks we've gotten 2 of the 4 left out maps, and 3 of the 4 left out weapons already. I don't like this approach but there really isn't a lack of content like others make it out to be. Overall the game will have 14 maps, 4 unique modes I believe, which is not lackluster AT ALL. Also you can only play 2 maps for each game mode in every 4 hour interval. It was fine at first, but now that we have 7 maps its a bit annoying, especially when you want to play a specific mode and you have a 50% chance to play that exact same map again. Another issue is not being able to change loadouts while waiting. The newscasts don't really bother me. Overall though the community for this game is awesome in the sense of the posts, graffitti, and the constant updates of content, and the splatfests to get everyone involved. Don't listen to others. This is one of the most original and exciting games I've played in years. Please do give it a shot. Expand

The graphics are on par with most other Wii U titles, they don't seem to get better or worse and I really believe they have already hit the limit of what the dated hardware can do and that is sad considering this is supposed to be the next Gen system for Nintendo.

As much as I don't want to believe it I think Nintendo, like this game, is short lived and soon forgotten all together. After 4 months I am willing to bet very few will be talking about this game.

The game allows players to customize their stats by purchasing in-game clothing items and weapons but you must achieve level 4 prior to being allowed to shop. This can be done rather quickly in online battles, it only took me 30 minutes to get there. By that time I knew what my play style was, I knew what weapons I would want and what stats I wanted to boost. I purchased a hat, a pair of shoes, and a shirt that added to my play style. I chose the type of weapon that suited me well. The idea that a player has to wait until level 4 before being able to do these things was a bit off-putting at first but after achieving that goal it all made sense. It is a brilliant tactic that illustrates the genius behind Nintendo. They understand gaming like no other company. This attention to detail is what makes them great. My parting bit of advice is that you should get this game, you should get a Wii U. The greatest games of this generation are on the Nintendo console. And there are so many more coming. Expand

Despite the lack of initial content, Splatoon is a killer app level title for the Wii U, once again proving that Nintendo has never exclusively been about Mario and Zelda. Get yourself out there and get this game!

It is a fun new IP by Nintendo, very creative and I had a lot of fun with it while it lasted, however there are many shortcomings to the game that just shortens its longevity. Firstly, the lack of content really limits this game. I have played this game for maybe a week now and I am beginning to grow tired of the existing modes and maps. It is a really fun game and it is very disappointing to see its potential limited by this.

Secondly, the ranking system in Ranked Battles is flawed. For a competitive mode such as Ranked Battles, the ranking system is based on how your team performs, not how you individually perform. This defeats the purpose of an individual ranking system and Nintendo cannot just turn a blind eye on this. I don't have any drive to raise my rank because I know that it can be affected any second by poor players in my team.

Lastly (this is a minor gripe), but I am a huge fan of the charger weapons and I feel like the charger weapon is too underpowered. Maybe if they removed the line of fire when you're charging, it will make the charger a little better?

I am giving this game 7/10 due to its creativity and its potential, but ultimately it still feels like Nintendo rushed this game out to compensate for LoZ Wii U not coming out this year.

The 4 minute timer in turf war makes the action fast pace and the ability to launch to team members makes sure that your never mindlessly swimming around. Platoons concept is that you have to cover the ground with more ink then your opponent. The idea is unique and fun. The multiple weapons along with the customizable gear with stats allows for the perfect setup for your play style. The single player, even though it's fairly short, is very fun as each stage throughs something new that works with the games mechanics very well. The coop mode where your playing with a friend is pretty boring and would of been better if it was more like turf wars. When you reach level 10 you unlock ranked battles which is a different gamemode called splat zones which is a lot like King of the hill but instead of standing on the site you have to paint it an and in some maps there are 2 zones. Some weapons have specials that allow to change the course of a battle like the ink strike or the ink zooka. The three types of weapons: the splatter gun, the roller, and the charger allow for a different type of play style everytime. In multiplayer there is no voice chat which isn't a big deal but it would be cool to develop starts with your team or call for backup on a certain area of the map. Overall Nintendo's first new IP in years is great and with the three amigo's that add more content the fun keeps on coming. It may be the best game on the wii U and it deserves the 9/10 rating. For everything else though it seems to work fine. The weapons feel good most of the time, but some special attacks are much better than others; see ink strike.

Content: Only 2 maps at a time in a single rotation, this is a very Nintendo decision. Maybe Nintendo was afraid of players not learning the maps thus they came to make players do the same ones over and over again? I haven't gotten though the entire 1-player campaign but so far it seems great.

Other: The menus in this game are great, which are located on the gamepad. The game has a major hub world you can walk though (kind of like the tower in destiny), or you can simply select who you need to interact from the gamepad. This feature is great, I actually don't know how to find some of the vendors due to only selecting them though my gamepad.

Some Bad: No voice chat sucks, but my and some of my online friends are used to it sadly (with MK8 and Sm4ash). Not being about to change out loadouts between battles is also annoying. I've seen suggestions about having 3 or so loadouts mid battle, which would totally suffice.

Splatoon isn't perfect but it comes pretty close, which is an amazing feat as it's a first game in an all new IP from Nintendo. Here are my quibbles that drop it down in score:

    Minor:
    - Inability to change equipment while sitting in the matchmaking screen.
    - Inability to back out of the matchmaking screen without shutting off the Wii U.
    - Motion/Gyro controls are horrid and way too twitchy even on the lowest sensitivity, The game shines with twin stick controls, however.
    - Initial repetition of the maps. Yes we're getting more soon, free, on a regular basis but after one afternoon I've seen 4 maps until I'm (almost) sick of them. I can't imagine how some people reached level 20 in the first 24 hours without getting burned out.
    - If someone gets disconnected or just doesn't play, you WILL lose. 3 on 4 is unforgiving, and heaven help you if you lose more than 1 person.

    Major (Update):
Although I originally rated the game a 9, I've dropped it down to an 8 due to one issue:
    - Longevity: Although the weapons are (more or less) fairly balanced and the maps probably some of the best arena maps I've played since the heyday of the arena games in the early 2000's, I've hit a wall with Splatoon simply because I've (almost) run out of things to do. At time of typing, I've reached max level in multiplayer, I have maxed out 3-star gear in all gear slots, have 100% completion of the single player (all upgrades, all 32 sunken scrolls [27 stage, 5 boss]), and I have a very small handful of amiibo challenges to finish. Bear in mind that I DID NOT play marathon sessions to achieve this. I generally got to play for an hour or two a night since release and even had a few days where I didn't play at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm still picking up the controller and playing, but for how long remains to be seen.

    Personal gripe:
    - amiibos. I had no problem with amiibo's prior to Splatoon but the way these amiibo (disclaimer: yes, I own them), unlock content rubs me the wrong way. Yes, the content they unlock is just remixed versions of the existing single player campaign, and yes the end rewards are cosmetic only. However, there is an AWFUL LOT of replay value that they gated behind the amiibo! Essentially the single player campaign could easily be doubled in length IF you have all of the amiibo, which isn't a given as the Squid is packaged in bundles in both North America (3 pack only) and Europe (bundled with game only). There's no guarantee the Splatoon amiibo will ever work in future games, either, one of the few redeeming qualities of the amiibo platform.

These issues aren't gamebreaking and, if you own a Wii U, you're doing yourself a great disservice if you don't at least try Splatoon. It's a game that has something for everyone while remaining family friendly.

    A final comment:
People complaining about voice chat, just stop. 3 minute matches on condensed maps do not lend well to deep strategy. The time you'd spend trying to formulate a plan would just put you further behind the other team. Plus, everything you need for on-the-fly strategy is right there on your gamepad. Voice chat would only open up the game to the most toxic elements of the community and make the game far less family friendly than it is.

It's fun, creative, fast-paced, and what's perhaps even more genius is that it allows anyone--skilled or unskilled--to succeed. This is a phenomenal feat if you are the game's primary demographic.

Alas, if you are a gamer who actually cares about improving and competing, it is also Splatoon's downfall. They have an almost meaningless "ranked" mode, which is essentially a cluttered, frustrating, uncoordinated version of king of the hill, with paint. The control area is small enough that one ink strike special will mitigate a team's possession, which seems weird to me. Because it's Nintendo, they were very careful to insure that nobody had too much of an advantage with skill alone. Rollers are a great equalizer for people who have no gaming experience or hands, and the gear bonuses appear to be totally randomized to ensure you don't get any smart ideas or feel inclined to play with an outfit that you actually like.

You cannot communicate with your teammates online, and players are often afk or disconnected on account of Nintendo's lackluster server configuration. In a 4v4, this is typically a death-sentence for the unlucky team. You play with a mix of people across the world, which sounds neat, but any seasoned gamer will realize what it actually means: a mix of pings on a mystery server that people on one half of the globe or the other will have the advantage in.

The game's other big flaw is that you can't seem to play with your friends locally unless you want to do the vastly inferior 1-on-1 balloon popping game. There is no local cooperative play, no split screen, and no ability to even play with your friends online, because while you can join their game, it's seemingly random which team you are on.

At the end of the day, it's a fun game. You'll play it, have fun with it, grow frustrated at its blue shell equivalents, and wish it was more than it is. But you'll play it and have fun with it.

It's a WiiU killer app, one of those games that are not only extremely original, but so well made they utterly deserve a big and supporting community.
