    Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut does not stand out as much as its predecessor did, which is no shame as this is a game that features a good balance between exploration of locations and backtracking and Shantae's magic spells and transforming skills are delightful. It could go further on the boss fights and in terms of content but that doesn't stand on its way of being a very enjoyable game for those who like exploring and backtracking in a metroidvania style.

    The DSi remains the truest platform for Shantae: Risky's Revenge, visually and ergonomically, but this Director's Cut edition is somehow a more accessible way to (re)discover the charms of our irresistible belly dancer.

    Pirate's Curse is very much better, but this game still has some really great charm. One section is filled with directionless need for backtracking and shop items, which was pretty poorly designed and frustrating, hence the lower score. I also thought for a game called Risky's Revenge, there was a distinct lack of Risky. Other than that, this was honestly a very good game, especially for its age.     Progressing in the game requires getting items from caves randomly located around the game's map. You're rarely told where the items are, or what they're called beyond occasional cryptic hints.
    For example, you're told to go to dungeon C, but when you get there, there's a gap you can't cross. There's no one there, just a gap. You jump the gap, you die. Turns out you need a powerup that's next to dungeon B that's not mentioned. You might call this nonlinearity, but really it's just wandering around, hopefully going in the right direction and praying you enter the right cave with the right powerup.

    Oh and the port needs a map button like crazy. The DS version apparently uses the second screen as inventory, so you can just poke a map button. In this, it's only accessible from the pause menu and the second screen is not used.    … Full Review »
