This game is okay. Not as good as some of the previous ones but still good. For some reason, Mario Tennis Ultra Smash feels...a little rushed. I really don't know if Nintendo was trying to do. Maybe they wanted to release early? The character selection is good. The graphics are okay for the Wii U. The controls are okay but I can screw up at times. The courts are simple but fun. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash isn't the best Mario Sports Games (The GameCube and Wii ones I enjoy more) but I'd say it's worth getting ONLY if it is $40 or less. I think $50 is a bit too much for this title. Months ago, I was lucky enough to find it for $30, which is what the price SHOULD be. As of this review, I play it quite a bit these days. I'd say it's a fun game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While disappointing compared to other entries in the Mario Tennis Series, I still enjoyed Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash quite a bit. While the modes are scarce it was nice to have online play available and Mega Battle was pretty fun.

However, there is no tournament mode, story mode or anything like that. There is no awesome opening cutscene like Mario Power Tennis for the Gamecube and there are no cool side games including Ring Shot, a classic, and the fantastic Super Mario Tennis from the 3DS Mario Tennis Open. The lack of modes is the biggest problem here.

However, the gorgeous visuals and quality gameplay do redeem this game quite a bit for me and I enjoyed mastering it as best I could. Overall, a pretty good game.

Rather than program in numerous different specials for different characters, they'd rather there be one with little to no substance.
The online is next to dead of course, with no one having been on, even AT release.

Overall, this game is just a shameless cash grab from Nintendo with no care or effort put into giving it substantial content. If you want a tennis game done RIGHT, go play Sega Superstars Tennis for the DS.

While doing this review, I'm also doing a full video review about this game on my Gaming channel "Niko Amii" on youtube, trust me, i'm trying to be as nice as I can here; i'll save the true anger for that video.

To start off my review, I will start it as nicely as I can. This game is a Mario Tennis game. There is Mario characters in it, and there is tennis in it. Because of this, i'm giving it a 4 because it is what the title said it is, but beyond mario plays tennis, this game has nothing to it. Anyways, onto my full review.

When I first put this "game" into my Wii U, the title screen popped up and from there on I knew I was going to be disappointing. Even the opening screamed "Help me, i'm unfinished". Literally like not a single animation, I was seriously confused. So after I pressed start, I realized there was only 4 modes to play, and all of them seemed uninteresting besides online mode and the ability to train and use my amiibo. So I was like ok, fine. I invited my cousin over to try out the game with me, and we were satisfied with the classic tennis mode where we could practice before playing online together, but our happiness ended there. We joined the online multiplier, and each time we waited for a 30 second - 1 minute match, it took roughly 5 minutes. This was a sign that scared me deep into my nintendo loving heart. No one bought this game, and now no one will face me online. So we finally got into our first match, and it lagged a lot. Between the lag and the constant 5 minute wait for a match (which only lasts like a minute or two), the online mode was ruined for me too. There is like a knockout mode and a might big ball mode too, where you can hit big balls instead of regularly sized tennis balls, neither of those modes were fun or interested me either.

If you are a huge mario tennis fan, I slightly recommend this game, you are most likely better off keeping your money to buy Xenoblade chronicals X or the new Fire Emblem game when they come out. The game lacks context, there is no Tournament mode or really anything fun to do in it. And if you don't have a friend or amiibo to play with online, you can't play online either. So you literally just play with yourself, literally.

The game is pretty, but the content is as shallow as a puddle. I'm a huge fan of nintendo, and I hold high expectations for them. I hope with the next mario sport game, they get it right.

There seems to be no reason for this game existing. 3DS tennis had things to do, GC had memorable animations and a real tournament, this thing just has scaling changes for no benefit or use. In the history of video games, tennis is what started it all so if the game was NOT mechanically sound I'd be disappointed. Graphically yes, it looks good but it's the typical graphical stylings of the Mario games which means it would look very similar on the 3DS (and, in fact does when compared to Mario Tennis Open from 2012).

Graphics and mechanically sound core gameplay alone is not worth a full retail AAA-studio price tag. It's not even worth the recently reduced-by-$10 price tag. I strongly encourage anyone interested to do what I did: rent it, spend a couple days playing it, then return it to your nearest Redbox or Gamefly. You'll see everything the game has to offer and be tired of playing it after only a few hours. I give it a 4 for being competent in graphics and core gameplay but the lack of content and almost non-existent replay value keeps the game from being worth any more.

If you have a 3DS, buy Mario Tennis Open. It's not the greatest but it's ten-fold better than this in terms of replay value. If you don't have a 3DS and want a Mario Tennis game, buy one of the Wii U's virtual console offerings.

The game modes are shallow at best, and there could have been one or two more characters at the least. The lack of motion controls is frankly baffling, as well. The Mega Mushrooms are interesting for a little while, but soon become fairly dull. If you're going to use power-ups, there should be some variety.

The toads also throw the mega mushrooms way too frequently. There really is no depth to this gamemode at all. Mega ball rally has you hitting a ball back and forth as it gets smaller. This mode is a little boring but is fun with a partner. If you want to play alone, good luck since the AI will use the chance shot sometimes making it harder to hit the ball!!! Knockout challenge has you beating a bunch of opponents as they increase in difficulty. Thats pretty much it except for the fact that you can train your amiibos for online play here if for some reason you want to save data for mario tennis instead of smash bros. Classic mode is the best mode which is just normal tennis, this has the least amount of cheap plays and is the most balanced but then again it’s just normal tennis which makes you wonder what the point of mario tennis ultra smash is. The game is played in the same stadium no matter what and it very generic looking. You can change the court to different textures which affect how the ball bounces and moves but that's it. No gimmicky stages like in previous Mario Tennis games. The last mode is online which works fairly well and is fun to play. Too bad due to poor sales i don’t expect it will be easy to find opponents after the first month of release. You can also gain star points from any mode which can only be used to unlock characters and terrain or extra lives in the knockout challenge and removing all replay value in this game. The game looks great but there isn’t anything to it that make me feel that a lot of effort was put into it either. There is no story either!!!! This is one of the shallowest games in terms of content that Nintendo has ever made. It feels rushed to make it out for the holiday season. There just isnt anything there to keep you coming back. This is a dust collector game in the Wii U’s library which is a real shame. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash gets a 4/10 -Infinite Expand

The game lacks different modes, such as a tournament mode or special games and diverse and creative courts, instead sticking you in the same stadium with different skins. The character roster was only decent, but still questionable in some areas. The so called "new" mechanic of the Mega Mushroom is just a stale idea that's was already used (better) in Mario Kart Wii and the Ultra Smash move is just a glorified flat shot that's harder to hit. Overall, this game is an empty game lacking everything long time Mario Tennis fans love. You're better off getting the N64, GameCube or even the 3DS Mario Tennis titles. Expand

El juego es de por si muy divertido, las mecánicas de los distintos goles hacen que sea muy adictivo. De todas maneras el contenido local es escaso, eso esta claro. El online funciona bien.

As an Xbox gamer, I give Nintendo deserved props, Gamexplain previews had a bit of slanted misinformation (catering to a "nerdier" Nintendo “fan” which frowns upon games considered too "mainstream", so variety or party games get shafted.)
Ultra Smash isn't ‘barebones’; it has a decent amount of activities, even local and free online multiplayer ranked modes.

Ultra Smash isn't ‘barebones’; it has a decent amount of activities, even local and free online multiplayer ranked modes.
Ultra Smash has 3 minigame/alternative modes, while streamlined, most complaints were nitpicks copy/pasted from one outlets clickbait preview.
Other games had more minigames (con), but weren’t as tightly woven into the core game as it is within this game (pro). With classic simple mode, there’s technically 4 minigames. The gimmicks courts include Ice, Sand, Pink Fast Court, Mushoom Bounce, Morph, Arrows).
The Mushoom mode is one of the core minigames and is based around the risk/reward factor of a mushroom that makes your character giant and more powerful briefly.
Items shots return as chance shots featured in Standard Classic mode, featured on the main menu. This features longer matches of doubles / singles, with No Megamushrooms. This is a great place to practice the core elements of the game, as Knockout Challenge will require you to understand this: you can't always rely on the Mega Mushroom advantage.
KnockOut Challenge is the core single player mode, Ultra’s reworking of Smash Bros 4's single player mode with elements of crazy hand modes, a money earning system used as you advance through an endless stream of challenging players. The courts and skill required steadily increase with extreme difficulty. Once you hit 14 or so wins, you face an overpowered boss character with extra abilities. It is based around chance shots, and mega battle mushrooms. This mode will eventually provide you with opponents with star skill advantages over your character. Save coins for rematches!
This doesn't include cutscenes, cups like its predecessors (or stadium aesthetics), however these are Nitpicks. Being real: this doesn’t take much away from the game. Cups are replaced with rackets which are presented to you when you lose a match (each represents a win. You can use your money to retry matches or spend on unlockables (which can be achieved or paid for through the “Challenge List”) Achieving is more rewarding.
Mega Ball Rally is based around a floaty basketball : moves slow, then faster as it decreases in size. Whether you win or lose, you gain extra points for keeping the ball going. Winning is easier in singles games, however is challenging on gimmick courts.
Classic Simple mode is a tribute to MarioTennis64, which removes almost all techniques except y-button power shots. (No chance, mushroom, charge or jump shots).
Amiibo training is a pokemon style training minigame and can drop in/out at any time. You can unlock custom skills from The Challenge List.
Cons: No ‘Friend’ list, some occasional minor lag, Could have slightly emphasised more on the importance of return charge shots and the choice of return shots to lessen effects of chance shots (whether purple or blue). But players will learn.

For me very good game! I don't understand why people hate this title... Game is more realistic like a simulation, not so much arcade than last Mario Tennis titles. It's ok :) A lot of fun and many hours spend!

It's still better than Sonic Adventure. It's also better than Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Unleashed, and every other 3D Sonic game that has ever been released.

I'm sorry, Nintendo. It does have good graphics, but it's not good. What I think is that Nintendo rushed this one for the hollidays. If they delayed the release to Summer of 2016, it would probably be more successful. This game has lack of modes, and I've done enough research for this game. Tennis lovers, go ahead and buy it, but I'm waiting until Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.

While the game's bloom is great, the controls work fine and the game functions well enough. The game is missing far too many assets from the game that pre-dates this by 10 years. Honestly, just play power tennis on your gamecube or pick that up on ebay for 40$ instead. *Dashie's gameplay was funny as **** though*

My friends and I have played Mario power tennis on the GameCube for its competitive play, The core tennis mechanics have disappeared which makes 2v2 non competitive at all. The really bad specific things:

-You can no longer fault on a serve. what gives? -Returning a drop before the first bounce has no consequences (previously it would go out of bounds). This effectively makes the drop

My friend got this and I wish he could get his money back for this terrible game.

The core mechanics of Mario Tennis have potential but there is simply not enough here to justify more than a few hours of entertainment. I can't recall ever seeing such a light return investment on a full priced game.

This game is just empty. There are few game modes which are either boring or too short. The only thing this game has going for it is the amino functionality which is actually quite useful for once. This game has no replay value and I have no wish to return to this game whatsoever. This game simply feels rushed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I own this game, and I play it, but it's quite a bore. There's barely anything to do.
    How to fix the game:
    1. Have a meter in Mega Battle, kinda like the one in Mario Sports Mix. When the meter builds up, then your character can have the option to turn big.
    2. Have an in depth RPG story mode.
    3. Have a tournament mode with a final boss if fully beaten.
    4. Have a mode with minigames.
    5. Add in around 4 more characters.
    6. Have most of the courts be in different settings and change the structure for some of them.
    7. Have an option to turn off Chance Shots.

The content that's there is decent, but the lack of interesting and diverse modes and the fact that previous Mario Tennis games had more to offer is a disappointment.
