If you want a fun party game this is a great choice… you have the “brand” of the Olympics plus the characters you know (and at least some you probably love). The controls aren’t overly taxing which can be a negative if you like a challenge… but are great for when you just want to enjoy the game, especially with friends.

Mario & Sonic are at it again, and once again the game series breaks its personal best. Although the lack of content is still an issue, this time all the events are planned carefully and the online multiplayer gives something for the lone sportsmen, who don't want to enjoy the newest Nintendolympics in the living room. I'd give this title a bronze medal for effort. [Aug 2016]

Mario & Sonic go back to basics in this new installment of the long-running franchise. Now only a few buttons will suffice for all sports, in a way that reminds closely the gameplay of old Sega arcade titles such as Virtua Athlete. Also, the new "Duel events" add random items, so typical of the Mario Franchise, to three sports for a more "party" approach. However, it could have packed some more sports and scenarios to compete, as it falls short in that regard.

At the end of the day, I enjoyed what Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Wii U tried to deliver. While the limited amount of events are the major downer here, I had fun playing them alone or with my friends. They found unique ways to represent the events, which is what matters at the end of the day. I do expect that the majority will be disappointed with the lack of specific Mario and Sonic touches, which is totally justified.

It appears to be aiming for family gaming, but just a little more depth would give it more longevity. What’s here is good, but not worth running to the shops to buy.

Mario & Sonic At The Rio Olympics 2016 is a solid entry in the series that will provide some undemanding multiplayer fun, as well as a modicum of single player enjoyment. However, a few too many missteps, from the lack of online to some events that don’t hit the mark, unfortunately stop this from being anything but overwhelmingly average.

A quite average sports game with better and worse moments, its core is based on repetitive and mediocre minigames unfortunately. You can play it, when nothing else is around, otherwise you can skip this game without no regret. [Issue#265]

    Fun game!

The events feel they have a lot more depth and polish on them compared to previous Mario and Sonic Games which will make you want to coming back for more.

The upside everything you play will offer some great fun, the game looks fantastic and runs beautifully at a stable 60 fps. The downside is no competitive online feature just leader boards and while there is plenty to unlock, there isn't a main campaign or story mode.

The hub world is beautiful and filled with life and new characters join in on the fun however its only on certain events you can play as them.

Soccer and rugby have to be my favorites, along with volleyball. Grab a few friends and you'll have a grand time. Alone you'll have a blast with the events and unlocking new content/items but if you're looking for a main story mode then you're better off getting the 3ds version.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is a step up from the disappointing Sochi 2014 but is still not up to the quality of those experiences found on the Wii.

However, the motion controlled games on the Wii have been turned more into timed button-pressing games which adds more skill into the events. The multiplayer is also very good with Football, Rugby and Volleyball being the biggest events here. These are very fun but leads into the biggest flaw with this game.

There are NO dream events. These were the best part about the franchise but are completely absent here. Its such a shame as it would have been really nice to see HD versions of older games from the Mario and Sonic franchises. Instead we have Duel events which do offer some added variety but I did not enjoy Volleyball in this mode. Football and Rugby were both excellent for multiplayer and were the highlights here.

Overall, this is a good game. But London 2012 has far more variety and is the better option for the summer Olympics.

Although it manages to escape mediocrity, it ends up being OK... Also let me quickly talk about the arcade edition of the game. It's fine, but you can just run on a tread mil in a gym whilst looking at Mario & Sonic footage on your phone and you could've gotten the same experience. Expand

Same thing as London 2012, but with less content and now the Dream Events have been taken out and replaced with Duel Events. This is my least favorite

This one is in the lower middle of the pack, but this game loses points for me because it represents the end of 30 years of authentic Olympics-themed video games. 2016 was the first games since 1984 that did not get a realistic licensed game. Instead, we got this cartoon and only on Nintendo systems. Expand
