I highly recommend it for gamers who like to spend a lot of time on games, and are interested in the story. Expand

The story is a roller coaster of emotions. Filled with rich characters, surprisingly adult themes and exciting twists. The world and it's characters are really well written. XC2 also has one of the best video game soundtracks I have heard. You will be listening these songs long after you finish the game. I would also strongly recommend to check out the story DLC Torna the golden country. It fixes many of the issues original game had and expands the story. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is not for everyone though. For example I can see how the occasional over the top humor and inconsistent visual design on blades might turn some people off. Combat system is not the easiest to learn but when you get a hang of it you will love it. For me the game is solid 10/10 but it is not perfect. Expand

This game expands upon everything from 1, improving it, the combat is faster, the story pacing is better, the side quests are more fun to do, don't get the wrong impression over a couple of out of context jokes that didn't quite land. Definitely the best JRPG out there

One of the best aRPG and best game in terms of story and OST in this generation.

My gametime now is 244 hours and i complete this game twice and do mostly of sidequests, battle system is still entertaining. Can't wait for DLC.

The only bad thing in that game is bad optimisation.

    Buen juego aunque tecnicamente mejorable.

This game's story isn't as good as the original's, but it's still an incredible game. Although it has a slow start (most games of this genre do) it does an extraordinary job of getting you invested in the world and the characters. I recommend looking up a guide explaining the combat since the game does do a great job of it, leading many people to get confused and quit early on.

While certainly there, the game is a lot more than that. The combat is incredibly deep, though it takes a while to understand everything, so I suggest looking up a guide for understanding the combat. The story is incredible, with one of the best casts I've ever seen in a JRPG with incredibly well written likable characters and tons of crazy plot twists to keep to engaged. The gameplay, while is a bit bloating mechanics wise, is also really fun. The game is massive, with an insane number of things to do and minigames to take part in along with a gigantic world to explore. The music is also god-like and one of the best in gaming, surpassing even the first xenoblade chronicles. However, the game does have some flaws. The beginning is very rough and tutorial heavy, with all of the combat mechanics not unlocking until early chapter 4. (the game has 10 chapters) The game also has annoying gacha mechanics. Luckily you cannot pay for more rolls with real money, (unless you count the free rolls you get with the DLC, which includes tons of other things) so that's a plus. It also allows every new playthrough to be unique with the different blades you get, (basically JoJo Stands or Persona) which determine movesets and such. However, if you are going for 100%, you will need EVERY unique blade, which is hell to get. Another issue is the field skills, which arbitrarily lock off locations (including story-required areas) until you get the specified amount of field skills, which require a lot of tedious grinding and maybe a bit (or a lot of) luck. The last issue is that for about half the game you have an incomplete team with one of the characters part of this small 3-person team being a gimmick character that a lot of people don't like who requires a whole bunch of grinding to make good. You finally get your forth party member at the beginning of Chapter 5, though they don't stay around too often due to plot (constantly leaving and joining the party during Chapters 4, 5, and 6) and don't permanently join you until halfway through Chapter 6. The fifth and final party member is even worse, not joining until the beginning of Chapter 6, a little more than halfway through the game. Other than those small issues the game is absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend it for any fans of RPGs, open world games, or anime. The lore is also super interesting and I highly recommend looking into it if your interested. It shows a whole new perspective on the game you'll never notice otherwise. 8.7/10. Expand

Though, subpar voice direction, unnecessarily sexualised character designs, and obtuse and confusing tutorials keep this from being one of the greats. What I think is most important to stress (apart from the gripes above) is that this isn't a game for people with a hatred of anime tropes and that this certainly isn't the easiest game to get into; the battle system refuses to open up completely until about a dozen hours in and you're much better off watching a video explaining the combat than trying to figure out what to do from the limited and downright infuriating tutorials that the game provides.

Generally, the game gets better as you continue on, with voice direction improving and the battle system becoming more complex for those who wish to engage with all aspects of it. The ending is fantastic and the narrative feels completely resolved by the time the credits roll. Suspend your disbelief, give the game some patience, and iron out any problems you have with the battle system early on and you'll have a great time with this game.

    2. Battle system is innovative but lacks proper tutorial and cannot look back again. PPl who don't want to rely on external help might be turned off.
    3. The field skill relies on Blade, which relies on gacha and luck. The other annoying thing is you can equip only 3 blades then have to swap them around to get the needed skill to unlock or obtain the items from the field. Kind of clumsy, unpolished system.
    4. The story is dropped down for the sake of open worldness.

In conclusion, the new ideas in the game are promising, but it lacks polishment and unfriendly to newcomers of rpg and non-hardcore players. I feel they are keeping it for a remake or definitive version. If you are into MMORPG, you can check this out. If not then might wait for the remake with quality of life improvement.

It wasn't until about 60 hours in until I finally mastered the combat system (after quite a lot of googling) and by then the fights didn't have to last for ages (which they did up until that point). Up until that point it was really just the story that kept me going, but after that it "clicked".

The only negative thing I have to say about the game is that the side quests are a drag. They're absolutely dead boring for the most time and more often than not simply not worth it.

I think if they had fixed the side quests, and polished the game in some other aspects, it'd been an absolute masterpiece.

Many people may disagree when I say this but this game is a masterpiece that is better than the first game in almost every way. The story could be a little better and maybe some designs could be less "shut off the TV when mom comes in the room", but these are flaws that I can very easily overlook. Despite a weaker story than the first game, there's still plenty of great moments. The story could be a little better and maybe some designs could be less "shut off the TV when mom comes in the room", but these are flaws that I can very easily overlook. Despite a weaker story than the first game, there's still plenty of great moments. The Titans are beautiful landscapes to walk around on and do things. Side Quests can be repetitive but who cares about that when they give you a reason to explore the game more and fight more of its enemies. There also genuinely good side quests, like the Blade Quests that give you insight on some of the optional characters in the game. The combat is amazing. I can be hard to wrap your head around at first but its really deep and some of the super bosses can be really hard but satisfying to topple. I consider it one of the 2017 Switch greats along with Breath Of The Wild and Odyssey. Pick it up if you haven't. You wont regret it. Expand

Really wonderful game - from music, through characters and story, to wonderful world, for me this game is one of a kind, and i can't wait for the next title from Monolith, great job guys. Btw Pyra was my first Waifu, pretty weird actually since i never cared about those things, but i was really in love in her, amazing game.

I'll be honest, the beginning of this game is pretty boring. You need to have time to play up to chapter 4 for the story to really start going and grab you, but when that happens this game is one of the best out there.

Originally, as a fan of the first Xenoblade, I was not sure if I should even play the game. It has some big flaws, like a slow start, bad tutorials, and horrible visual character designs, but the good parts of the game were so good, that despite all the issues that would completely ruin any other game, I was still able to enjoy this game.
Gameplay-wise, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 follows a similar philosophy as the first game, but with a lot of changes, that make the gameplay feel like a new experience.
One of my main issues with JRPG’s is that a lot of times, you will need to grind, especially if you are focused on the main story. However, in this game, you almost never need to do that. Even if you are under-leveled it always feels like you have a fighting chance. Unlike the first game, where enemies that are more than 5 levels above you feel impossible to beat without special items, in this game you can be quite behind in levels compared to the enemy, but if you have developed your blade affinity charts and have ok items, it always feels like you have a chance, by making slight changes to your strategy.
Furthermore, even if you are the type of player that tends to do every single side quest before fighting the first boss, you will not be significantly overleaved, as part of your exp is stored as bonus exp, that doesn’t add up to your actual exp, and can be consumed in inns. Essentially you have control over your level. Lastly, with the addition of challenge land with the DLC, the game truly tests your understanding of the mechanics, and you are encouraged to come out of your comfort zone and use different setups.
Sound design: xc2 has probably my favourite soundtrack of any game. The music always matched up to the area you were travelling, or the boss you were trying to face. And then there are tracks like drifting souls, which are true masterpieces (speaking of drifting, Nintendo, pls fix joy-con drift). Lastly, although the voice acting starts off bad, and improves later on (the screaming of the main protagonist remains bad until the final 5 minutes of the game, unfortunately), the Bri’ish accents are refreshing, compared to the more commonly used American voice acting in other video games, and give help differentiate between the different races.
Story: Without spoiling much, the story starts slowly, and has a lot of cringe scenes, which can be a turn off for a lot of players, focusing mainly on developing the characters. But by the end, I felt like this was one the best stories in any game, worthy of being a sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles. While the first game focused mostly and developing the main character, xc2 does a great job of developing the story of all characters of your party, which made me much more interested in the story of the game, and how their characters arc concluded.
Conclusion: This game has some flaws that can potentially push off a lot of people, but for my money, this is the best game I have ever played. I would recommend this game to fans of long JRPG’S, and especially people who like the first Xenoblade.

Since cinematics, ost and story plot are simply amazing (something that went bad in Xen.. X), the main point you have to care about is the gameplay, which is IMO hard to perform well, very complex and sometimes messy, but after all, you'll get a lot of fun.
Monolith helps you a lot among the game with full of tutorials (you can even be in a tutorial after 20 hours of playtime), then if you expend many time on it, you won't be afraid of the gameplay.
Something negative to say about the game, IMO is about the english dub which feels really uncomfortable and inaccurate. It just doesn't match with the characters and scenes. Anyway, you can solve this by downloading for free the japanese voices from the eShop.
After all, I love so f***ing hard this game, although i would like to rather it with 10, there are some silly problems like handheld screen resolution or frame rates at some points which makes me to be objective and rate it with 9.
Anyways, it's a JRPG master piece any RPG fan should give a try.

-World Building (Alrest is a cool world and just the concept of living on titans is really fresh/unique)
-Cutscenes (Holy... It feels like i'm watching a really good movie and the immersion is amazing)

    Liked:
-Battle Mechanics (It's confusing in the beginning but after you play for a long time you will master it and pull of some insane combos with your party)
----->You get tutorials even in the very end of the game...

-Character Designs (Both main party and the rare blades are well done)

-Blade Quests (Love the cutscenes! It tells you more about who they are and what they can do)

-Heart to Heart (Loved the choices and how each one plays out! Some are comedic while some are learning more about everyone in general)

    Meh Meh:
-Blade Summoning (Its integral to the story and I'm fine with it; the problem is getting rare blades in general and it involves a lot of a luck) ---> Maybe about the same as FGO xD
-Side Quests (Pretty much what you find in almost every game; pretty inconsistent in terms of the how good the side quests are)
-----> Pretty much walk back and forth

I could spend a lot of time talking about in depth of every single thing but it would take ages to write xD

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a masterpiece for me
It is not a game for everyone since there are some complex mechanics especially the battle system where you have to spend a lot of time in it to master

I highly recommend it to those who have a switch and are looking for a JRPG masterpiece cause it definitely was one kind of an experience that I will not forget

If you're a fan of JRPG, there is no reason to miss this game!!!

I'm about 30 hours into Xenoblade Chonicles 2, and I am having a blast thus far. As someone new to the "Xeno" series, but someone who enjoys JRPGs, this is a big win for me. I have a few gripes about the game that force me to take a couple points off (I think it's really an 8.5).

    Pros:

Really fun, engaging, combat system. That being said - it's a pretty complex battle system, with a lot of different chains and abilities that happen with the press of 5-6 buttons. You really have to be aware of your surroundings too. Want to tackle a strong enemy? Make sure you clear out the smaller ones before you engage or you risk dying after 10 minutes in battle because you aggro'd another enemy and they killed you.

I'm really enjoying the story so far. There's lot of typical JRPG cliche's, but I enjoy the character interaction and overall story so far.

The world is beautiful. Each titan is very unique, and even though we're confined to one titan (continent), we get the feel of a huge open world. Uraya has so many different, and awesome, color schemes working in it's favor. It really is a treat to run through the different titans and do some exploring.

There's a lot customization and progression options as well. I admit, it can get a bit confusing with all the different types of experience for leveling up your weapons, affinity charts, character level, etc. But it's got depth. Depth and different ways to diversify a gaming experience are so important for me.

    Cons:

The graphics are sub par. The art direction for the game is great, but I thought we'd have better graphics considering what I've seen already from the Switch.

The map - for a game where we're exploring so many different areas and following quests, the map becomes more of a hindrance than a tool. The only way to pull up the map is to say you're going to fast travel somewhere. The minimap is small and even if you bring up the large overlay, it's not very helpful. Some arrows on the minimap would be awesome for quest direction, because the waypoint system isn't that great. There are times where the waypoint would be in the middle of the screen but it'd say I was getting further away from it. It's a little weird.

English voice acting is hit or miss. I enjoy it for the most part, but there's some voicing that feels so out of place it ruins the immersion a little bit.

Would love to see a bit cleaner UI, or at least the ability to customize. There's a lot going on on the screen anytime you get into combat, which is expected. But I don't think they did a great job making key parts of the UI visible through all the chaos, such as HP bars or numbers not really catching the eye. There were several times I didn't realize one of my party members died until I consciously checked the side of the screen.

Sexualization of female blades, people, characters. I'm sick of seeing this in games, and we get a lot of it in XC2. Not only that, but there's so many cutscenes where it zooms in on a character's cleavage, or rear end. It's just not needed, or wanted.

Overall, I'm really enjoying Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I would love to see an update that makes the minimap a better tool and a bit of cleaning up the UI. I like the story, I like the customization, and I absolutely love the combat. There are many complaints of battles taking too long, but I'm okay with that based on the way the complex combat system works. I think if you're a fan of the series, or JRPGs in general, then this is for you.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a good game riddled with technical issues and poor game design choices. Never have I played a game so frustrating, and yet found myself coming back, I would imagine that some do not ever want to play this game again. Let's dive into the issues of the game.

    The party AI:
The AI in this game, particularly the hero characters in your party, are extremely stupid. Tanks will try to run around enemies, and run off of cliffs. Healers will stand in environmental poison/fire and die; when you res them they don't move from the spot, and die again in the same spot. I've never played any previous Xenoblade games but if these issues were in the past games it should have been fixed by now.

    Hardware and Software Issues:
Nintendo advertises a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Pro Controller, which is cool and all, but it doesn’t work with the game undocked (THIS ISSUE HAS NOW BEEN FIXED AS OF 12/23/2017 VIA UPDATE). This game also has major issues rendering parts of the game particularly when you fast travel to certain areas, like Tora’s house.

    The UI map interface/quest design:
The map in this game, in its current state, is terrible. Not only is it hard to figure out where you are due to the enormous sub menu you must dig through, the quest indicators at the top provide little to no help, especially later in the game. The quest design from a gameplay perspective could also use a little tweaking; after hours of doing a chain quest only to find out the final part is gated behind your blades field skills seems like a low blow. Not only that but you have to hope you have the right field skills because if you don’t, it’s time to open core crystals for an hour looking for blades that have the skill you need to complete the quest. This is particularly annoying in a couple of the MAIN STORY quests, because you cannot progress until you have certain field skills and level them to certain levels. Thankfully there is an update that will happen for some of these issues (like the map UI) late December. (UI MAP HAS BEEN FIXED SLIGHTLY VIA UPDATE 12/23/2017).

    Save your game often:
There is a random crash which is happening to many people in the later chapters of the game. As many people know this game doesn’t have “save points”, like so many other JRPG’s do, to remind you to save. So, if you’re mid-dungeon and have to leave the game for whatever reason don’t forget to save. If you do forget to save you’ll find yourself wanting to flush this game down the toilet; have fun slogging through the previous hours of your life leading up to that dungeon all over again if you die at the boss or anything else.

Despite it’s many frustrating technical issues, and design choices, it still manages to be a good game from a story, and exploration perspective. It’s worth a try, but don’t be surprised if you put this game on the shelf and start playing something else for a while; especially after your tank runs off a cliff side just before you’re about to kill a monster for the first time.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has it all: memorable characters, deep story, a beautiful combat system and the best OST of 2017. When I started playing it I found the combat system interesting and I was lost trying to figure out how I should play the game but it didn't bother me because I know what a JRPG like Xenoblade can offer, and I patiently spent the first 2 hours walking around and looking for info on in-game tutorials about the combat. The game rewards the player a LOT if you understand the mechanics in combat and once you understand it all, it's so satisfying to play it. And I recommend you to download the "Japanese voice pack" on Nintendo ESHOP, I played all Xenoblades in English but the English Voice acting on this one is not good enough for me. So I recommend playing on Japanese VA and english/spanish/etc subtitles.

Next, we have the world design. It is superior and better than Chronicles and Chronicles X, where you can find a good variety of different monsters and some special monsters (tyrants).

The story telling of this game reaches the perfect score of the first Xenoblade, with charming characters and memorable enemies. The story has a meaning and there's no need to play the first one in order to complete the story on this one, but I'd recommend you if you have enough time to play Xenoblade Chronicles 1 before starting this one. If you don't have the time, don't worry, you can enjoy it just as I did!

And what I should say about the music... it is perfection. Mitsuda, Kiyota, ACE+, ANUNA,... It was amazing, the music topped the perfection of the xenoblade franchise, each track reflects every place, location or situation.

I'll finish this review writing that this game deserves a solid 10 forgiving the flaws that it has, because it is such a unique game... I'd recommend this game to all JRPG fans without a doubt and if you are not into RPGS, give it a try! But I must warn you that it's hard for a non-jrpg lover to understand the mechanics, you must be brave and try to understand it, but I assure you that it will be worth your time thanks to the story.

I'm 32 hours into the game! - I'm absolutely Loving it! It is a very very in depth game - I can only assume the poor reviews are from people who can't grasp the concept of learning to play a game.
I'm loving the voice acting btw. Visuals are gorgeous. The Soundtrack is astounding and entirely matched to the game itself. Yes- it is very Japanese in play style but here, that totally works

Fantastic Job Monolith and Nintendo! I;ll be playing this for 100s of hours and I look forward to the DLC battle and Story modes forthcoming! :)

A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]
