I look at the characters face and they are emoting very strongly and I can just imagine what the japanese voice track would sound like, but that is not given as an option in the game. The story has interesting ideas in it, but the way it is presented is quite bad, with characters flying in to save the day at the last moment, having previously given no indication they could fly. the way it is presented is pure deus ex machina, before the first chapter starts. The environments are cluttered and busy right from the offset and came across quite overwhelming. there aren't even any artistic cues to help environment traversal. at one point there was a set of stairs that led to the objective but because of the angle and the colour of them, they looked just like one of the crates that littered the area. This is a small subset of numerous issues.

The game is bad. so bad it is shocking.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is easily one of the worst jrpgs I've played to date, and I've played a lot. The reasons are many and unfortunately by the look of the Pfff *user score* alot of paid or fanboi reviews artificially bumping up the score. XBC2 is a beast of a game, tedious, boring and downright frustrating to play, but has charming characters and a great story assuming you can force yourself through the morass of downright obnoxious game designs and flaws.

XBC2 suffers from having far too many game mechanics in play, the game world being poorly constructed with areas having widely different monsters in them, with extremely huge level gaps which often could pop up and wipe your party at a moments notice if your not paying attention.

The combat system is unnecessarily and overly complicated with combo after combo after combo being the only real way forward, regular trash mobs often taking several minutes to beat because your arts always reset after each battle making for a substantial uphill grindfest. Consider XBC2 a single player MMO similar to FF14 but with far slower character progression and levelling, this would be the closest explanation on how this game plays out.

The control system is often janky at best, trying to navigate narrow ledges or jump on certain things often leaves your character bugging out whilst the quest system clearly enforces another very obvious grinder for relatively little rewards, but the player does them anyway because its content even if ultimately time consuming and unrewarding, an early case and point is having to rescue a Nopon from monsters, then fetching wood then going back to the quest giver then finding another Nopon then either paying 30,000 in gold or doing another fetch quest to find rarer wood then going back to the original quest giver for 300g / 200 exp reward and a few measily items, bullcrap like this is unfortunately common.

The character designs, story plot and sound though are at least par or even above par and for the switch do the system some justice but ultimately are heavily let down by everything else the game has to offer.

The interesting thing about this game though, it does have the addictive qualities of MMos because it really does feel like your playing on, and that is the only source of fun you'll have most of the time just pretending you'll run into other players to take on a unfair or frustrating raid boss that can cheat or cheese the player resulting in countless wipes until you decide just to overlevel that boss.

Blade grinding again, is another severe uphill grindfest - not only is there a significant amount of cores to find making it almost like pokemon, you'll have to level and grind them up before they'll even be even remotely useful.

The character designs present range from extremely bland and forgetabble to extremely try hard at "moe". The voice acting is atrocious, do not play it in English at all, use the Japanese voices, and the repetitiveness of the voice clips is grating. The combat is a real mess of useless combat functions, QTEs and needlessly padding itself out to appear more complex than it actually is. The battles take extremely long too, far more longer than they need to and it makes getting through battles a complete slog where you're just wailing down the enemy sponges while watching autobattle play out. You can't even move when doing autobattle either which makes it even more restrictive. The combat is also very slow compared to the two previous Xenoblade games.

The graphics are vastly worse than Xenoblade X on the Wii U, which is odd considering the Switch is more powerful than the Wii U, and it takes an even bigger hit when on undocked mode, a blurry pixelated mess with FPS issues across the board.

The use of different artists doing the character designs creates a huge inconsistency design wise, as everything looks like a mismatched hodpodge of characters like they belong to different games. It's utterly jarring, and the overuse of pervy anime tropes got eye roll worthy real quick.

Mi conclusión es que un juego de la pasada gen como Skyrim no debería verse mejor ni ir más fluido nunca salvo que el juego de Switch tenga un pésimo trabajo o esté inacabado como es el caso de Xenoblade 2.

GAMEPLAY: Game barely handles 30fps. Every game mechanic is poorly tutorialized (despite the numerous tutorials) and horribly designed and has no respect for player's time.

Blades are basically like a cross between party members and equitable weapons. Your weapons come in the form of essentially 'spirits' which fight with you in combat. There are about 25 unique characters you can get, all with distinct personalities and storylines. The issue here is that except for the few you get as part of the main story, the process of acquisition of these characters is cancer. Rather than having awesome recruiting quests, finding these guys hidden throughout the world in awesome side quests... they are random drops from a consumable item. That's it. It's a gatcha system and the odds are not in your favor. It's ridiculous. They put what are essentially PARTY members behind these in-game loot boxes and it's absolutely awful. This alone would make me say that this game is unfinished garbage.

Blades have skills called Field Skills (like super strength and jumping really high). You might think, cool, that could change how I interact with the world! Wrong. All they are, are arbitrary skill requirements that act as keys for nodes throughout the world. Don't have some arbitrary skill at level 5 available? Too bad. It's just a way to arbitrarily lock you out without any real gameplay implications. Leveling these skills can also be a nightmare, depending on the blade. They are basically like HM's from Pokemon, except they have even less gameplay impact and you have to level them up. It's such a pointless and boring system that summarizes my opinion of this game: it lacks any kind of engaging or interesting gameplay outside of combat. It all boils down to grinding out these various "RPG" systems that have no real gameplay impact beyond resource acquisition and menu navigation. Missed opportunity doesn't even cover it. Field Skills shouldn't even be in the game.

This game has a myriad of stats and hundreds of trivial consumables that are just about worthless. You use those consumables through an asinine menu called the Pouch (which allows you to consume one consumable at a time for an hour). This system should be completely ignored, except for the fact that it's integral to character progression. Each character has favorite items, which are required to discover in order to progress certain abilities. The only way to figure this out is to GUESS their favorite item.

Quests are intensely uninteresting with about as much effort as basic MMO quests. Exploring the world is pointless. Despite being beautiful, it's filled with nothing. Since every single thing in this game is based off of RNG drops and lootbox systems, the most interesting thing you're going to find is a treasure chest with random loot in it. There is no meaningful way to explore the world (no skills that make navigating the world interesting as you progress). It's clear that this was what they attempted to do with Field Skills, but that's a complete failure. It's another open world game with nothing in it. The map is horrible for a 2D map and completely ridiculous for a 3D map. It in no way shows elevation or anything else you would expect in a game in 2017. The compass is wildly inaccurate. It's also filled with insanely high level trash mobs that make no sense and are completely ridiculous. I saw several level 70 bunny rabbits just hanging around outside the first town. Not only does this make exploring tedious, it also completely wrecks verisimilitude. You're telling me, I just killed this crazy "powerful" boss, but there is a bunny that can one shot me right outside?

Combat, while being over complicated, is very boring. Once you learn it, it's just the same combos/skill rotations every battle. No battle is different from any other battle. I never once, in 30 hours of gameplay, felt like I had to adjust tactically to the fight. It’s trivial, boring, and more about micro-managing your personal skills than actually engaging with an enemy or behaving tactically.

STORY: Story is hackneyed, cliché, tropy anime garbage. It’s pandering and cringy. From the really embarrassing character designs that just scream horny 14 year olds, to the fact that every character is as shallow as the character trope they inhabit, this story is just an embarrassing joke. I’m constantly rolling my eyes and I actively hate every character because of how pandering it is. There is nothing good about it. They didn’t even ATTEMPT to lip sync the characters to the English actors, either. Frankly, it’s one of the worst RPG stories with some of the most bogus hackneyed characters I’ve ever seen.

CONCLUSION: This is a generic JRPG, with pandering characters, overdesigned mechanics that lack any sort of tactical depth. It is filled with game design missteps and missed opportunities. It violates every concept of good game design and is overall a cancerous waste of time.

The only reviews i found for this game before purchasing it were written by die hard fan boys how would gladly suck this games dick for days at a time if it possessed one calling it a "stunning master piece" while only really going into depth on the environments and nothing else. Speaking of which, the environments are needlessly big and that coupled with a way-point system that is vastly inferior to other such games more than a decade it's senior ( Ex. Borderlands 2) and if that weren't bad enough there is an area in one of the games maps that it totally inacessable unless you manage to fall down there and miraculously not die whivh i managed to do and i found just as filled with enemies as anywhere else and that moment was when it became clear to me that most of this games develpment was completely focused on its environment which explains the severe lack of polish the game so clearly suffers from. The combat system while i will admit is extremely satisfying (far more so than xenoblade Chronicles. X) most of the necessary combat mechanics are left up to figure out for themselves as the tutorials are just long and drawn-out bricks of text that: do a poor job explaining how battle is to be conducted efficiency, do not test out your understanding of said mechanic unlike many other games in the same genre (ex. Southpark: The stick of truth, Persona 5, etc), and unlike these games the tutorials are not rereadable AND on top of that the A.I. for both friends and foes is totally incompitant with me being able to sneak past many foes who were practically stairing me right in the face and with my healer barely doing her damn job. The voice acting is some of the worst i've ever heard in a video game with performaces ranging from mediocore to down right awful with the english script not being much better awkward-lines-a-plenty and the absolute butchering of even the most common of englsh phrases however there is a
free japanese voice pack that clears this problem right way. The story i'll admit is VASTLY superoir to that of the previous xenoblade instalment with the sound track along being leagues better as well as far less anoying with the sound actually being adjustable this time around. Another thing i'll give this game is the design of the games many blades with even the lower quality blades all feeling unique much like the plethera of guns in the Borderlands games and the higher quality blades all have very unique and creative designs, however even with all this in mind and the fact that i was just literal inches away from finally completing the story i couldn't stop myself from become fed up with the sheer wieght of this game's flaws (many of which i have not listed here due to the fact that i'd rather put this disappointment behind me as fast as i possibly can) which like many other games of its sort only grow worse and more apparent as the story progresses and promptly wiping every last trace of this abortion of a game from my switches harddrive including the save data as i have no intentions of ever returning to the world of alrest and if im being honest this game just seems like it was designed by pretentious art student who really just wanted to make an anime (which i would totally watch if they obtained better voice actors and a better translator).

Ok let me explain where I'm coming from and why I gave this game such a low score.
I'm a huge RPG fan and have played every major series from Baldur's Gate to Final Fantasy and Zelda series.
I absolutely loved the new Zelda on Switch and enjoy most but not all JRPGs. Storyline is very important to me, but graphics are not. I also believe that strong narrative and story progression as well as introduction of new game elements needs to be done right for the game to be successful and fun. It's in these last elements where XB2 fails miserably.

    Let's start with a story:
From the beginning up until where I am in the game now (about 50 hours in) it feels like it was written by a hormonal Japanese teenager with absolutely no understanding of human relations. The characters are bland, boring and plain weird. Lost in Translation kind of weird. This goes beyond some of the weirdest writing I've experience in some of the Final Fantasy games and is just way too distracting.
The characters don't help this either, they're way too overdramatic and extreme with some being absolutely unrealistic protagonists or antagonists. Nothing in the story really made sense so far and some of the "twists" are fundamentally dumb. Every little encounter ends with a Deus Ex Machina like solution that makes no sense whatsoever. "Oh so we are losing the battle and now suddenly one of us is going to uncover a hidden potential that nobody thought we have and basically defeat an overwhelming foe, that also didn't really appear that overwhelming from the get-go, oh and all of this in a 5 minute long cutscene"

Music and sound - too extreme and much too distracting. Having your character announce his every move in every single battle (with battles lasting up to 5 minutes) is just plain stupid.
Music is okay in some parts, but way too dramatic in parts where it shouldn't be. Very badly executed for the most part. I more or less play with sound completely off now.

Game elements and overall gameplay: this is where the game fails the most I think. Up until about 40-50 hours in the game, you are still "learning" - the game throws mandatory tutorials at you with some of the mechanics such as chain attacks that could have been learned from the onset in 2 minutes. As you walk through various levels, you'll find a huge mix of mobs from very underleveled to extremely overleveled that will one shot kill you all the time. There's no reason for such level design and it helps nothing in the game - it's just very poorly designed overall. The battles are way too long and even when battling monsters 10-20 levels below you, you'll waste time with monsters that always aggro you.

At this point, I'm only trying to finish the game because I paid the full price for it but I honestly deeply regret it and hope you don't make the same mistake. This game is absolutely not what many people make it out to be, I feel like we're just all stuck in the deep buyer's remorse and need to justify this pile of crap as something worthy.

Ok to be fair, I thought I'd mention a few things that this game does well too:
The world is large and varied, although there isn't much to do in it unfortunately other than walking and picking up occasional loot or battle monsters.
The battle mechanics are somewhat original and the variety of character builds is good.
The battles can be challenging and rewarding, but because they can also be super boring, it's usually more of the latter not so much of the former.
There is a lot of variety in terms of weapons and classes/skills, but this of course assumes you like the battle system.
There are a lot of monsters and various designs. Seeing such a variety of creatures is impressive. If only fighting them wasn't such a chore.

Overall this game to me feels like it's an early beta of an RPG that's trying to figure out the monster placement and the storyline. This is not worthy to be released as "top RPG on Switch" as some have claimed it was.

I may have eventually enjoyed combat if I had stuck with it long enough, but I was unable to watch (or listen to) the horrid character designs that looked like they were made by a horny 13 year old and unable to listen to voice acting so bad I'm convinced someone got conned by the actors who did it.

I loved the first Xenoblade, I was looking forward to playing this when it first released. After getting a Switch recently I can finally play this game. But it gets more and more frustrating the more I played. Keep in mind I did not finish this game, and I probably won't. I played up to chapter 6 and I pretty much had enough of the artificial limitations that was put in everywhere of the game. The random blade spawning is bs! The Affinity Chart is bs! Field Skills limitation is bs! The map and quest waypoint marker system sucks!
The blade spawning and Affinity Chart feels like they are taken from free-to-play games, maybe that was what Monolith was planning to do, where you can buy premium coins to get guaranteed rare blade crystals and affinity boosting items. But for whatever reason (maybe seeing the backlash at EA) they didn't implement that. So we're left with a system that was made tedious for the purpose of encouraging purchase but have no way of purchasing the premium items. I would rather they had the ball to put that into the game.
The field skill gates doesn't even make any sense, they gate the side quests, which should be giving you field skill points. I was doing a rare blade quest and it requires Botany lvl 7, who would have that by going through a normal playthrough?! On another side quest I need to talk to an NPC, it requires Girl's Talk lvl 3 WTF?! How is even talking gated behind the fking field skills.
So what I'm left if is just the main story, which was alright up to chapter 6. But now I'm stuck because all the enemies in the area I'm in suddenly became level 80 after a certain cutscene, so I need to either grind 20+ levels or stop playing. I think the choice is pretty easy.
Before I played this I saw many older posts also mentioned this game was disappointing, but I didn't think it's that bad. It's like all the new stuff they added to this game was made for monetization, but they didn't actually go through with it. I rather they just put in 30 unique blades in the entire game (no random blades) you grind money to get it, none of this lootbox stuff. No Affinity Chart at all, blade skills should be manually chosen by the player (using up experience points). No field skill requirements, that should be completely scrapped. I know this is probably not realistic as that would pretty much be remaking the entire game's progression system. So I'll probably never finish this game.

    -Mercenary missions are repetitive.
-Like the 1st one, most of the game's sidequests are fetch quests.
-Su much anti-Qol elements. For example, Merc Missions can be cleared only with in-game time, not real time. So, If you start an 15 minute mission, close the game with 10 minutes left and return to it 10 minutes later, You'll still have 10 minutes left. Seriously?
-Tutorials suck, they don't explain game mechanics well... and you cannot re-view them!
-Graphics are bad. Also, who thought giving different artist for different characters in a 3D game was a good idea? Characters feel imported from other games, they clash with each other and the rest of the game, making the game's style inconsistent. Same goes for NPCs.
-Portable mode is just... argh, my eyes are bleeding!!!
    -English voice acting is earbleeding.
    -Battle lines are repetitive.
-Too much irritating anime stereotypes, clichès and tropes that ruin the story.
-Character design sucks sh*t, especially Rex, Pyra and Mythra.
-Characters are stereotyped and unlikeable. I dislike the entire cast, especially Rex, Pyra and Mythra. I hate them with a burning passion!
-Excessive fanservice, like moments where the camera pans on Pyra and Mythra's bodies, even in serious moments. This is a game made by perverts for perverts! Disgusting!
-All of the forementioned story and character-related flaws make the game a cringefest.
The only good qualities of Xenoblade 2 are the music and the world's atmosphere, but those two aren't without flaws, too: for example, I hate the music you hear in the infamous Mythra sleepwalking scene.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is not only the worst game I've ever played on Switch, but also one of the worst games I've ever played in my entire life. I hate it with a burning passion, I regret buying it. Had I the chance, I would not onlt go back in time and avoid buying it, I'd try to delete it from existence!
I've played 1 and X too, and while I disliked them too 2 was leagues worser. To be honest, I realized I never actually liked Xenoblade games: other games or even watching stones are more entertaining than this smoking sh*t of franchise. At this point, I'll definitively skip 3 (and I'm glad I'm skipping it looks like some people are disliking this too). I think this franchise is overrated, as well their developer Monolith Soft (but not when they make other NIntendo games as I love BotW), and I think they should stop with Xenoblade and make something completely new and fun, not another niche garbage like Xenoblade.
In closure, I absolutely advise you to NOT BUY Xenoblade Chronicles 2. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!

Outrageously awful. I cant believe anyone thinks this is good.

Possibly the worst writing ever put into a video game. Eeeeveeeryyyyone taaaaalks reeaaalllllyyyy ............. slooooooow ........... aaaaand with draaamaaatic ........... paaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuses. Half the characters (Including the main cast) have outrageously thick accents from various areas of britain. Its so bad

There is sooooo much time wasted on cutscenes with no facial, awful switch graphics and super slow awful voices.

Stay far far far away. Possibly one of the worst games ever made.

Quite possibly the worst 6 hours of an RPG I have ever played.
The English V.O is embarrassingly bad. It feels like each actor recorded their lines years apart from each other. The animation system makes every character suddenly jump into their walk animations. The on-boarding process just throws random gameplay elements at you without any rhyme or reason.

The characters are your basic pervy anime tropes, and if you are into lingering cameras on anime breasts, well do I have the game for you. The Christian symbology is so in your face, I'm embarrassed for the writers. "Child of Adam? Wow. Hacky writing.
To top it all off, they do not tell you how to save the game at any point while you are playing it. After twelve hours of playing this drek, my system updated and turned off, deleting all of my progress.
Truly, a horrific experience start to finish.
If you like a game with even a reasonable unique story, look elsewhere. Play Zelda for another near until something good comes out.

Mediocre Game with turtle paced story. Combat gets decent near the end and my god the English Dub sucks ass. Whoever gave the green light for the VA choices in this game should be shot and hanged.
They went from a great game in Xenoblade Chronicles 1 to a generic lowest common denominator shounen anime fan servicey game. WTF. Way to lose more customers than gain some. SMH

Actually xenoblade 2 would be a wonderful game. BUT, the fighting system is so bad! Exclusively Quicktime events ..... what I hate about it? you always have to gaze at the edge of the screen instead of being able to observe the wonderfully animated figures. Since the coolest graphic helps nothing if you have to focus on something else. Too bad.....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It has all the advantages of JRPG, but also has all the disadvantages of JRPG.
Out of date, side quests are meaningless and boring, fight system is complicated but boring.
It is nearly perfect JRPG game, but except the story, it is just a boring game.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. it is extremely frustrating, high level monsters will agro you out of nowhere and you will die thousands of times for no **** reason at all. Also the map system absolutely sucks in this game, i've been wandering around for the past 5 hours trying to figure out where to go and I still haven't found the place. It's confusing and poorly made, don't waste your money like I did.

With an overabundance of tropes, cliches, and a lack of character development, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is one of the biggest disappointments of the year. The story was boring, the gameplay is riddled with bad game design, and most of the characters stick to their overused archetypes like molecules. Do not waste your time with this disappointment of a game.

The first Xenoblade has been my all-time favourite game since I first played it many years ago. When I first heard a sequel was to be released I was skeptical, given how perfectly wrapped up the story of the first game was, but I was determined to give it a chance. The artstyle left a bad taste in my mouth from the start but I let it slide in hopes that it would tell a good story. The artstyle left a bad taste in my mouth from the start but I let it slide in hopes that it would tell a good story. And after getting through every unbearable generic trope filled scene complete with abhorrent voice acting, I can say with complete sincerety that Xenoblade 2 is nothing but an insult to the whole Xeno series. The character design is all over the place which makes being imersed in the world near impossible, characters clash with the settings and eachother, and many of the characters are glaringly designed with only fanservice in mind. The voice acting is another thing that takes me out of it. Half the time they sound like they have no idea what emotion theyre supposed to be feeling. Even voice actors that I know are good, sound terrible in this game. And acting aside, the writing of the characters is so weak and boring I couldn't bring myself to aftually like any of them. Few have any substance beyond their given cliché trope, and whats there leaves much to be desired. The story is shallow and very poorly paced, and its unnecessarily convoluted to give a shoddy illusion of real depth. There is so much wasted time in almost every scene, even in key moments which totally ruins any emotional momentum that was built up. And speaking of ruining the moment, too often the choice of music (or complete lack of music) for an emotional or otherwise important scene would totally clash with what was going on. The soundtrack is one of the few things this game has going for it, and they still managed to ruin scenes with a poor choice in songs. The story is all over the place, the antagonists have shaky motivations--if you can even call them motivations--and it takes concepts that were very well done in the first game and turns them into a lifeless mockery. The main cast is nothing but your run of the mill dime-a-dozen anime cast with nothing particularly memorable about them. It was hard to find any reasom to want them to succeed except for the fact that as the heros of the story they're meant to. And to top it all off the ending gives you one of the dryest, most boring cutscenes of the whole game. It retcons the end of the first game, because the story of 2 can't fit into the canon as it is, further showing this game was a poorly planned cashgrab using the popularity of the series name. The end is unsatisfying, and leaves you feeling like you've accomplished nothing. Xenoblade 2 is a waste of time and a waste of money. Expand

One of the worst J-RPG's and a disgrace to the original work of its prequel on the Wii console.
The amount of fanservice it has is obscene and attentive to the intelligence of the player.

Uninteresting characters, plot that exists only the first half hour and the last 10 hours, all in the middles is just anime trope and sketches that makes augh only to little kids and Japanese people. Poorly written since there are far too many deus ex machina, and only one character is given space and yet it feels the most forced character in the whole party
    Fun to explore, battle system

Fun to explore, battle system is highly subjective though having to stand still and autoattack is horrible, it basically has the gameplay as classic world of Warcraft for the 1st too many hours, to many phone game mechanics like having to wait real time with the game on to get some mission done, especially m I on that are mandatory for some Blade's quest line, and Blades are just a horrible gacha system that shouldn't have existed in the 1st place
Oh, also those blades tends to be cringe and really point towards a kid audience. There are some references to Xenosaga, that are ruined by some evil nopon action sketch, and this also RetCon the 1st Xenoblade, erasing one of the way you could read the game, so this horrible plot is just so bad that destroyed a good one even if they have in common only a single point.
Good game by per se, but it shouldn't have "Xeno" in the name while also being a work of Monolith soft.
Some improvements that were made in xenoblade X aren't in this game.
Good music from Mor Ardain onwards, bad voice acting and no, saying "just use the Japanese one" doesn't make it any better
Honestly, Torna is the only part worth playing, it sucks that to play it you have to own the mistake that is the main game so it automatically become not worth it.
Also the characters are so uninteresting that's almost impossible to empathize with them, even when you should. One of the protagonists is a pedophile, and there are pedophile jokes used at a funeral by another characters, that later scold someone for not paying respect to the dead. I don't understand how anyone would like this unless they are 612 yo circa and/or likes anime way too much, to the point when they don't even read or try to understand the plot, they just want to see the sketches that they have already seen in every slice of life anime ever

A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]
