The world design, in particular is mediocre, however the world presentation is amazing, what Nintendo is at fault here is the lack of reason to explore and also the poor script in the story as it goes on which evidently makes you not care anymore. Along with a titans worth of miscellaneous crap that will likely be over looked, this only proves that Nintendo doesn't quite have the formula down, at least for this game. Expand

By miles, this game is the best game for Switch, and no, that isn't a contrarian Breath of the Wild hater's opinion. Where BotW won out in visuals, this game had everything else. It hit every cord so perfectly in terms of world structure, story, combat, pacing, difficulty, and pretty much everything else.

The world, though not as visually stunning or free as Breath of the Wild's feels more polished and more tailored to what I want, where the monsters, loot, and quests are organized exactly how they should be across the map to make it interesting and make exploration exciting. Certain areas are walled off until you hit certain milestones in terms of blade development providing constant reason to care to go back and explore zones which you've previously been.

The combat, which is the best part of the game despite what critics might have tried to convince you, is easy to learn, but with incredible depth that rewards you not only in increased damage output for learning and getting good at it, but also in loot. If you do well and work hard to do well, you get better and more items providing a constant motivation to not just mash buttons. This system kept me interested through to the last moments to take every fight seriously.

The blade system, which is essentially a pokemon/booster pack opening system whereby you find certain blades in the world/story or find certain cores (booster packs) which you open with a random chance of getting something good, is fantastic. The RNG is perfectly structured where you can't just farm cores and get them all early on, but where it gets more difficult as you're getting down to your last few and pretty much requires you to wait for the cores you get later in the game. There is NO pay to win here, no loot-boxes where there could have been, just a system designed to make the game more fun, and they truly succeeded.

To address the most controversial portion of the game, the design of women and female blades, all I have to say is recognize this game was made in Japan and that video games remain to be a far more widely-held male hobby. Add 15 points to the critics' score and 1.0 point to the use score and we'd be at a more honest place discounting political nonsense spilling into video games. Then we're at a 98 for critics and 9.4 for users, the disparities from a perfect score for critics stemming from an admitted time commitment and learning curve in figuring out the combat system and for users in not liking hard games.

Also, if you need further verification that this game was scored unjustly for political motivations, look up some videos of the voice acting, hear how great it is, then look up reviews. Critics seriously scored lower for the game because they exclusively used European accents rather than a more diverse collection of accents, quality of the voice acting not even addressed.

But back to the regular review stuff, the story is incredibly thought-out and expansive; not just save the world from Ganondorf but understand the world and why you are destined to fight him in various forms for all eternity level stuff. The characters are unique and likable, their individual plots and motivations enjoyable. Mechanics wise though, my only objection would be that one spoiler unnamed character should have been a different class so as to make all the characters and team selections equally viable.

Looking forward to the expansion this fall, and though I already have the season pass, this game is so good, a big irrational part of me wants to buy the physical copy of the expansion I already have a digital copy of just to contribute to the developers.

10/10 will play several more 100+ hour play-throughs again in my life.

My initial reaction upon starting the game was that the graphics are pretty blurry compared to other big titles on the Switch. This problem becomes especially noticeable in handheld mode.

The story is what you'd expect from a JRPG, and it definitely picks up later on. The voice acting was interesting to say the least, I downloaded the Japanese voice pack DLC and played with that for the most part. Really the only strong points that I found were the music and story, which is disappointing for a game as hyped as this.

There is about 50 hours of gameplay packed into this game, or 36 if you subtract the 14 hours of cutscenes. There's a lot of content in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, some of which is interesting and may help to distract you from the long and grueling combat. The combat system isn't as bad as people say, a couple of short YouTube tutorials will set you on the right path. The actual length of the combat itself is the problem, many of the enemies feel as if you are fighting a tank. Usually, when I play an RPG I like to explore every part of the dungeon and defeat all the enemies. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was probably the first game I decided not to do this. Eventually, it became a hilarious game of "how fast can I sprint past these enemies to get to the next cutscene?"

I will give credit though, a lot of games tend to drag out the ending with useless stuff but Xenoblade Chronicles 2 did not do this and the pacing was very good. Overall, I give Xenoblade Chronicles a 6/10.

Next, I need to talk about the story. Absolutely amazing, and isn’t afraid to deal with dark subjects such as death, depression, and loneliness. I was astonished at the surprisingly great voice acting in English, and Japanese. For some reason, I felt like I had to play it in Dub, as the Japanese didn’t seem right to me. The blades in this game, which are the Pokémon aspects, looked good, and terrible. This game, as a blind purchase was amazing. You may see reviews talking about how the combat is sluggish, or how enemies can aggro onto you from a mile away, but, even though I experienced that once or twice, I still had a fun time with the game. The characters are so charming, and likable, I couldn’t pick best girl or boy. Maybe the best girl in my opinion is ((Partial Spoilers)) Mythra, and best boy is Zeke, or the Zekenator. I wish the game was longer, even though it took me 150 hours to beat it. No major complaints here, but this game is very niche. If you don’t like JRPG’s, massive boobs, or combat that takes a while to get good, then don’t buy this. I’m okay with JRPG’s, and I was so surprised at how much I loved this. Another wish is that I want Nintendo to bring Xenoblade Chronicles X to switch. Have a wonderful day, reader.

In short, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is one of the best games I have ever played. This game is pretty much the main reason why I bought a Switch, and honestly, I am not disappointed at all. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with its over 70 hour long campaign, delivers a solid and deep combat system with an engaging story, full of lovable characters, paired with excellent music and visuals.

The combat system is unlike anything I've played before. I did try a bit of the first Xenoblade via emulation, but due to issues, I could only play a few hours of it. Nevertheless, the complex combat system of Xenoblade 2 feels great to play overall. Chaining together Specials to form Blade Combos, and sealing enemies' attacks, before breaking all those seals and unleashing a massive amount of punishment on them always felt satisfying to do throughout the game. But even outside of combat, things are really engaging. There are tons of ways in which you can modify your blades, as well as your party members, which kept me tinkering with menus for a long time, trying to find the best setup I could come up with.

The story is something I really got hooked on after playing for a while. There is always something to keep you on your toes and await the next cutscene or mission, be it lore or present events, but the end is where Xenoblade 2 really shines. This game has a wonderful ending, which I admittedly teared up on not once, but twice. The curiosity of what lies in Elysium always kept pushing me forward, while I gradually grew closer and closer to the characters.

Finally, the audiovisual aspects. They can be simply stunning sometimes. I'm not the one for ambient music, but this game might have made me a fan. Be it grand, and powerful, or sad and melancholic, the music always hit a pleasant spot for me. The tracks with vocals are just simply amazing, and it really feels like a lot of effort has been put into the music. As for the visuals, they are absolutely beautiful. Scale plays a huge role here. Seeing the Titan you're on move its head or wings around with you walking on it just felt amazing to witness. Xenoblade 2 also likes to switch up its locations quite variably, which is a great thing. No two areas are remotely the same, their people as well as their structures are distinct to the point where you can recognize an in game nation just by their looks and style alone.

My only real gripes with the game were the really slow and sloppy start and the gacha system. Once the story and the gameplay got going, I got sucked in, but before that, I was a bit unsure to keep playing or not. I glad I did though. As for the gacha, while it does vary up how you go through the game (with the random drops and all) I felt like the game should have been more generous with the drop rates for Rare Blades or just rarer Core Crystals. I did like how all of the rare blades have their own flushed out histories and personalities, though. Additionally, the inn system is something that I was kind of confused about. The bonus EXP you get is just way too much, and I'd advise players who are planning on picking this up to just ignore the inns and the bonus EXP, because it is super easy to overlevel yourself with it, and that's never a fun thing.

Overall, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an outstanding game. A lot of people brush it off just because of its Japanese style, or slow starts, but it really, REALLY pays off in the end. It has so much content, polish, and love put into every one of its aspects. If you really do love JRPGs, this is a must. If you get through its slow start, you'll find one of the best gaming experiences you can ever witness on the Nintendo Switch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start out by saying that this game has a fair amount of problems, and that I would not recommend this to everyone. That said, this is the perfect game for me.

THE game has a deep and interesting STORY. I particularly loved the main blades', Morag's and Jin's stories, as they develop from just "bad" or "good" guys, to people you care for and have sympathy for, as they were all put in difficult situations they didn't know what to do about. I also love how the story introduces a little comedy whenever the game goes too deep in on a topic such as the meaning of life, morality, the death of loved ones etc. as this keeps the game from becoming depressing, but still allows the game to develop a deep and interesting story that shows that the developers cared about the player.

THE COMBAT in this game was also great, albeit not introduced in the best way (the game uses a LOT of text prompts, and doesn't give you the option to re- read about a feature you have already been explained once before). I especially liked how the game allows you to have your very own combat style, being able to choose (as long as you grind a bit) exactly what blades you want to use, with the choice of in total six different types of tanks, healers and attack blades. I, myself loved how the game lets you exploit canceling the auto attack of pyra/ mythra, to instead allow you to recharge your arts super fast, rather than doing a bit more damage. The elemental attacks and combos, their ability to seal away enemy attacks, combined with chain attacks, all while the combat is in real time, makes each combat encounter an expertly crafted strategy game, while keeping the pace of combat quite high. The enemies' abilities to have different attack styles, just like yourself, and adapt to your attack style makes each combat encounter feel slightly different, and keeps combat fun through the entire game (although I could see how it might feel a bit grindy, as this keeps each battle going for longer, and you'll be in combat a LOT).

SIDE QUESTS, however, get VERY grindy, and are not too original or too fun to play through if you are not a total completionist (like me). However, I still enjoyed the grind a lot, and loved levelling up blades and feeling the pure satisfaction of every affinity chart I finished (what can I say, the combat is just fun enough, and the stories in some cases justified the grind).

Lastly, this game has BY FAR the BEST SOUNDTRACK I have ever heard in any game that I have played (but then, again, I haven't played that many other games compared to most people). The environments are also extremely beautiful, and that's enough said.

A fight with an ordinary enemy whose level is slightly higher can drag on for minutes, especially if you’re fighting it alone. The combat itself is also rife with problems: sometimes main character even fails to draw his weapon, or locks onto a far-off enemy, while another already is eviscerating him in close combat. Despite some rough patches, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a worthy addition to any Switch owner's library, especially if you have a predilection for RPGs and enjoyed either of the previous entries in the series. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 75]

Extensive and massive JRPG. Although with a rather cliché story and characters, it comes with a beautiful world and a fighting system growing more and more complex with every hour played. [Issue#282]
