In the turmoil and uncertainty that has followed, mercenary work, banditry and thievery across the land is abundant, as honor has long since become an almost entirely forgotten virtue.

Now, prepare to lead a group of unscrupulous characters who revel in such activity in a massive open world where combat, death and a thirst for riches will shape and define your day to day life. You are not special, the chosen one or a once in a millennia hero ushering in a new era of peace. Your goal is solely to survive and thrive in this harsh and hostile world.

Wartales is a game that I very much want to like, and suspect I would, were I playing it on PC or presumably a more powerful console. I have plenty of positive things to say about it but at the end of the day, it just doesn’t run well on Switch. Wartales is a very interesting game, but between poor tutorialization and awful performance on Switch, it may be buried a bit too deep to be worth playing on this platform.

The Nintendo Switch is an amazing system that can do some pretty amazing things, but at 6 years old it is struggling to keep up with modern games. Looking at recent releases like Mortal Kombat 1 and the state in which it launched is a great example of even with the best studios and intentions, sometimes the Switch just isn’t up to it. Sad to say that Wartales has also fallen victim to the aging system. As I said I think if I played this on PC my thoughts would be very different but as it stands no matter how much fun the actual gameplay was, dealing with all the issues that the Switch version has just makes it not worth it. Long loading times, unstable framerates and constant crashes managed to steal all the fun out of this one, Wartales is a story best left untold.

When Wartales is behaving itself, it’s an enjoyable game. I’d love to lose hours to it. Maybe someday, after more patches, I’ll be able to. I hope this review is eventually useless. But the reality is that this game is on sale right now at a fairly high price, and it’s fundamentally broken worse than just about any other Switch release I’ve seen. Was it worth shadow-dropping a game in this kind of state? Do not buy Wartales on Switch until it’s properly fixed. It’s a waste of your money and of your time.

Any potential Wartales displays as an outlaw fantasy RPG is negated by frequent crashes. There’s fun to be had with party management and a robust turn-based combat system, but until the stability issues are addressed, the game’s not worth the frequent backtracking previous save points.
