The gameplay of Wandersong is primarily built around the use of wheel, controlled using the right analogue stick, that allows the player to sing one of eight colour coded musical notes. Using this players will complete relatively simple puzzles and rhythm action mini-games and traverse platforms, which only prove tricky on occasions thanks to the imprecise controls. In all honesty, the gameplay lacks any real challenge, and as a result it isn’t particularly fun.

Fortunately, with a great cast of characters and sense of humour, the game does however have charm in spades and the conversations and crazy plot are without doubt the strongest elements of the game. Quite often I found myself just wanting some sections to end so that I see more of these interaction, and trimming a few hours off the 10-12 hour running time would have been of benefit to the pacing in my opinion.

With more involved gameplay this could have been a classic, but as it is it’s not a title I could unequivocally recommend.

Wandersong definitely has a lot of things going for it. The visuals are stylistic, the story is great, and the game play is built on an interesting premise. Singing has a lot of interesting applications and is your main way of interacting with the world. Is there a wall too tall to scale? That's ok! Just sing to a bird to get an extra boost next time you jump. What if you're meet face toWandersong definitely has a lot of things going for it. The visuals are stylistic, the story is great, and the game play is built on an interesting premise. Singing has a lot of interesting applications and is your main way of interacting with the world. Is there a wall too tall to scale? That's ok! Just sing to a bird to get an extra boost next time you jump. What if you're meet face to face with a vengeful spirit? No problem! Sing it a song in order to calm it down. The only real problem with this mechanic is the repetition. Many of the gimmicks that utilize singing just boil down to guiding where something goes with the control stick. Another, more pronounced issue is the controls. They're... ok, but there are definitely moments where they feel kinda janky, but even if the moments of janky cause you to mess up it's not going to set you back much because of another, more personal issue I have. The game is really REALLY easy, in every aspect. There's like 3 challenging puzzles and 2 challenging platforming sections. It's not like the easy platforming and puzzles are boring, but the low difficulty means you kinda just breeze through the game. Where Wandersong shines is when ever you're told to explore a town in order to progress. These towns are often filled with fun characters and make you explore every inch to find what you need. Luckily, these sections are very common, even taking up an entire chapter (easily my favorite by the way).
Wow uhhhh didn't expect to have that much negative to say. Anyway, the story is pretty good. It's kinda like Super Paper Mario except good. The game looks great, with really pretty colors (animations could be better though).

If you’re after a unique experience, Wandersong completely has you covered. The singing mechanic works perfectly, and while it may feel a bit too easy at times, the combination of the visuals, writing, and various gameplay objectives across a generous seven-act structure make for an incredibly compelling platforming experience that you’d do well to check out.

It's a delight of sight and sound, and more than anything, I hope this isn't the last we'll see of the Bard's endearing brand of heartwarming positivity. [Issue #37 – January/February 2019, p. 24]

Wandersong is a highly recommended title, not only for its original mechanics, but for its soundtrack and the adult themes that it covers.
