Overall it's a solid game, but there's very little to make this one unique. It's pretty nearly identical to Valkyria Chronicles 1.

The story was fine, but it was pretty long. At times I felt like there was too much & some parts got pretty tedius. Also there were a few too many love stories crammed into a war narrative for my liking.

This game is not fun. I played VC2 and VC3, never before VC1, I've started playing VC1 now but I can say VC1 is way better than VC4, because the level design was better. I hated the optimization for VC1 tho, since if you are playing on 240hz, enemies become strong as **** Whereas in VC4, the frames don't affect the enemies but the level design was just pathetic to play. It went back to its roots by basically an enhanced version of the first game but not enough of an improvement to leave a different mark. Still dont like that speed of clearance makes everything moot for the battle result ranking. Its a mechanic that I see in a lot of games but still dislike. It make sense in some scenarios where you go in hard and fast and disappear but there are other scenarios where a tactical approach is more interest but the game punishes you if you use that approach.

Here's to hoping to an official port or remaster of the 3rd game in the switch.

I simply love great video games in many genres. I just don't get the really high scores for this game. Sorry for fans of the series but in a nutshell (or should I say in a tank shell)

    - the graphics and gameplay are top notch, absolutely, the opening tutorial scene using Kai the sniper is superb (sometimes there are little glitches in the battles, your APC gets stuck or an enemy seems to revive after being successfully hit but it's minor)
    - the story pacing is sooooo SLOW (if it was like FF tactics it would have been better) but for every phrase you have to activate a button press
    - the story is just juvenile drivel very poorly written with ridiculous shifts in tone from political to serious to stupid and the juvenile mysogenistic lines and cut scenes are beyond pathetic (personally I just don't get it at all)
    So to sum up :
    - 10/10 for graphics and gameplay
    - 0/10 for the juvenile disjointed mysogenistic story and ever so SLOW dialogue (one bonus is there is a Japanese voice patch so I could brush up my Japanese)
Finally the game is very polished overall including the coverart.

It is more of the same for Valkyria Chronicles 4 - and that's no bad thing. Going back to what SEGA did best with this series following the awful Revolution was really all that was necessary, even if it might feel too familiar if coming off of playing the first game recently. Comic book visuals, a story based on World War II, appealing anime-like characters, a mix of overhead and third-person strategic and real-time gameplay - there are so many crazy ideas melded together, and yet it all comes off so well. There still isn't a series much like it.

Not expecting to like Valkyria Chronicles 4, I came away loving it. The turned-based tactical gameplay is constantly engaging, and the water colour visuals look a real treat.

Valkyria Chronicles 4, ten years after the release, still a marvelous strategy / RPG game. It has a rich gameplay, a great scenario, an amazing amount content, and a brilliant OST.
