Unruly Heroes is superb action game destined to go down as one of this year’s sleeper hits. Mind you, in a just world, it would be more than a sleeper. But high profile or not, this is still one expertly-crafted burst of action that surprisingly comes in many flavors. Between the absolutely gorgeous artwork, fun combat and platforming, varied gameplay, and an immense amount of charm that creates an amazing take on a classic legend, this is a title you shouldn’t miss. It truly is a case where our misfit heroes smashed their way to the top and did it with style.

Unruly Heroes is a truly engaging platforming Action title. It hits all the highs of the genre and manages to avoid many of the pitfalls typical of the genre. From solid combat to unique design and mechanics, it's a title that offers an engaging experience for both veterans and novice players.

Unruly Heroes is a wonderfully enthralling adventure thanks to its striking visuals, impressive variety and clever mix of platforming, puzzles, and combat. What might at first seem like a fairly ordinary platformer reveals itself to be much more not only helping it stand out from an already crowded genre on Switch but surprise players in a great way.

This Unruly Heroes is a very pleasant surprise. If you like 2D titles that mix platforming and action in equal parts, you will enjoy this title greatly. Many describe it as a perfect mix between Rayman Legends and Trine, and they are right. It has a bit of both but it also shines with his own ideas. It's beautiful, it's long and it's a real challenge in many moments.

Unruly Heroes takes the best part of Rayman Legends and adds a few new features to deliver an entertaining, original and fresh experience from the beginning to the end. One of the biggest surprises that exceeds every expectation.

Magic Design Studios offers a great title where the platforms, the gameplay and the puzzles are the most important elements. Its audiovisual section is great and its replayability and cooperative mode make this title an essential game for lovers of the genre.

Unruly Heroes is a classic platformer that borrows a lot from other renowned games, but still manages to give it its own magic touch.

The ever-expanding Switch eShop has no shortage of excellent platformers under its belt, and while Unruly Heroes may not be the absolute best of the best, this is still one of the finest platformers we’ve played in a long time. Stunningly beautiful art direction coupled with diverse level design and well-paced gameplay makes this one an easy recommendation for both longtime platformer fans and for new players looking for an easier game to get into. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but Unruly Heroes hits all the notes that it needs to, and it’s more than deserving of a spot in your games library.

Unruly Heroes is a super fun take on an old story that is full of charm, breathtaking art, and more challenges than you can shake a bo staff at. It’s certainly not going to make anybody forget other Journey to the West adaptations, but it has so much going for it that it makes this version of the story all its own.

Unruly Heroes borrows from Rayman Origins, Trine, Guacamelee, but rather than a sum of references that would drain of his substance, the ideas of these titles that he makes his are magnified thanks to a controlled sense of rhythm, a constant renewal, a sublime artistic direction and an adventure full of humor. Like on a small cloud. Magical.

Unruly Heroes is far from a bad game. In fact, it has some of my favorite platforming of recent memory, at least in terms of pure gameplay. It just lacks the polish needed for platformer completionists like me, and it’s uncompelling story and music did not help. At least the developers are supporting it with content, despite it being months after its launch. If you are looking for an affordable platformer, this game is a must, but don’t expect to be putting in the same hours as Yoshi’s Crafted World.

Unruly Heroes is a solid game, a good game, a fun game, it just isn’t a brilliant game. All of the components are fun, the visual style is lovely, the characters are easy to use and the puzzles don’t make you want to throw your Switch at the cat. Those are all good qualities, but it just lacks that little bit extra that would turn it into a great game, a must-play. You aren’t going to walk away with a new appreciation of life or Journey to the West, just a feeling of “Yeah, that was a laugh.”

This is a game that prizes style above all else, and emerges a mess because of it. [Issue#331, p.118]

There were so many instances where my character would just kind of float to where they needed to be. This always saved me but made it impossible to get a feel for the movement so it feels awful to play. How does a platformer completely fail at making jumping fun? Full Review »

Being able to swap between the four characters gives you four lives essentially before you fully die. This is often an extremely important feature during the harder battles. Each hero also has its own ability that can be used to solve simple puzzles to make your way through the world. Each feels different but similar enough that you don’t have to learn them all individually.

The environment is what is truly special about this title though. The art style is amazing similar to the brightly colored worlds of Rayman which makes sense because most of the team that made unruly heroes comes from the Rayman studio. The art is bright and detailed and extremely beautiful causing you to stop and admire the variety of different environments that the levels take place in. The music is a great fit for the art and gameplay keeping the experience feeling fun even in the later stages of the game.

Even with the fast fun fighting and absolutely beautiful art I did feel a little let down with the puzzle aspect of the gameplay. I never felt very challenged when solving a puzzle which feels like a missed opportunity to bring another layer of strong gameplay to the title. This isn’t a huge complaint by any means because the game is meant to be a platformer that is based around fast moving combat and not is puzzles. Some of the puzzles are really interesting but others seem to lack making consistency an issue. Even with this I think Unruly heroes is completely worth your time just for the absolutely marvelous world that this team has created for you to explore. The quick addictive fighting style that focuses around swapping your hero out at the correct moment really makes Unruly Heroes a true treat.
