Undertale is THE best RPG, I would even say this game is much more than an RPG. The characters and areas are memorable, the mechanics are perfect, and the adventure the game will take you on lets you expirience everything- joy, horror, respite, and everything in between. And the soundtrack is absolutley amazing, probably one of the best videogame OSTs of all time.

Undertale is unlike any other game I've ever played. Highly recommended for everyone. I strongly suggest you go in blind - don't read anything about it or watch any videos, if you can help it. Just remember, you don't have to kill anyone. (Also: Undertale features one of the best soundtracks of this generation.) Just play it!

This game uses mechanics I have never seen in an RPG where your skill can decide how much damage you take / give while most RPG's make me just click the a button to skip the text and attack again. Also, while most games just show one method of defending, this game shows different methods of defending and sometimes attacking but never stalls on it so you can have a new experience and not have to play a repetitive game over and over.

UnderTale also has great replay-ability because even though the map does not change, your actions on certain people can change how the game is played and theirs multiple endings to make the game always feel new and fresh.

When I was a child I had this ability known as "Sucking at games" which would make the game way more fun learning and getting better at bosses like Mario Galaxy 2 the Perfect Run would just be a good time spender but games will all use the same format which is why i have lost the feeling of learning a game but this is new and inspiring giving me the nostalgic feeling I have wanted for a long time, learning, trying different methods of killing bosses.

In conclusion, UnderTale has a great story line with new kinds of methods of attacking and defending and in my total of 10 hours of playing I can say this is one of the best games I have ever played and I'm not just saying that because everyone else likes it, It has a great chunk of story on it's bones and I can't wait to see whats the next ending I can get. Thank you Toby Fox for giving me this feeling again I haven't felt in a long time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the best indie game ever made. No doubt. It looks and sounds beautiful. The characters all have their own special charm. The world around you is wonderfully designed. The music is amazing. The stories are very well done, namely the Pacifist story. If that didn't give it away, this is one of those games where every single choice you make affects the ending of the game. Say you don't kill anything and do a bunch of other really specific stuff. You'll get the Pacifist ending. If you play through the game normally (and most likely blindly), you'll get the Neutral ending. But if you literally go around hunting for enemies to kill, eventually none will show up. Do this in every area of the game, and you'll get the Genocide ending (and one of the hardest boss fights every made). Overall, Undertale is modern masterpiece. Just don't go looking up fan-art of Undyne x Alphys... I've seen some s***. Expand

The core fighting mechanic involves controlling a little heart, dodging obstacles to avoid damage. To engage with the enemy, you can choose either to fight or to interact and talk. It's unique, fun, and the game constantly riffs on the concept.

There are a handful of puzzles. They are okay but not inspired.

The writing is full of jokes, meta-humour, and absurdism, and there are a cast of memorable characters. I enjoyed this side of the game a lot.

I found the story mixed, though. The broad strokes of an underground realm of mosters is good, but it's overly complex and confusing, partially due to a reliance on exposition dumps, and there are about twenty endings, which rob the game of its narrative momentum about halfway through and start to grate. I wasn't very emotionally engaged.

The art is very basic, largely in the spirit of self-parody, but about half of the character designs are actually really strong, and there are some pretty environments. However, the other half is pretty bad. Some of the in-world character designs are not even intelligible, and there's an absence of animation which, while joked at, seems lazy.

    The music is unreservedly excellent.

Overall, if just due to its sheer oddity, I have to recommend playing this.

It was everywhere when I came out. My 17 year old's head was too far up call of duty zombies at the time since it was my most played game at the time. Fast forward to 2018 and I got it on sale for my vita after my friend was telling me it was an awesome game and being that I just got back into RPGs from my PS1 Final Fantasy days, I figured why not. I did NOT know what I was in for. The game has the greatest charm I've ever seen in a video game. The characters, the atmosphere, it's story telling, is all SUPERB. I love everything about this game. There are VERY few flaws I could find with the game. It's THAT good. I can't say much without spoiling the experience. I went into it completely blind, never watched any playthroughs, didn't read any reviews, nothing. I just watched the 1 minute trailer right before I played it.

What are you waiting for? Go start your journey! It will be a rollercoaster! and you if you're a big fan of video game music, you will find lots of musical masterpieces in this game. Toby Fox is a musical genius.

With majora's mask being my #1 favorite game of all time, and chrono trigger being #2, I am proud to say undertale is my #3.

The jokes are funny, the atmosphere is relaxing, the music is well done (due to the fact Fox is a composer), the characters are likable, action is provided, and some of the twists are definitely shocking. In the True pacifist Ending, you are just stricken with sadness due to the fact that despite saving everyone, you cannot save one monster. My one small complaint is the graphics and sprites. I highly recommend playing this game on PC, PS4, PS Vita or Nintendo Switch. Expand

The characters are endearing and the humor is fantastic. The music does a fantastic job of representing the character's personalities and traits (especially Death by Glamour). I cannot say how much I love this soundtrack. It's definitely a jammer.

The complaints I have with the game are that the sprite work can be boring sometimes. You can walk down a hallway with 1 color, so you cannot even tell if you are moving or not. It's weird because there are some points in the game that are gorgeous (like the room where you fight sans). If all sprite work was like this it'd be incredible. Genocide run can be a little grindy.

Will you disrupt the monsters' world with your entrance, or will you find a way to see them as people, too?

I find it hard to rank my favorite video games, but I think more fondly of my time with Undertale than I do of any other game. Pros: The story is amazing when fully understood and some time is invested into the game. It;'s an experience that stays with you, and this is coming from someone that owns all three versions of Undertale

The characters are still amazing and funny 3 years later! Not many games can pull this off and it's a testament to the character design of Undertale. That, along with its character-based storytelling, can sell the game alone.

The battle system is simplistic, but innovative in its pacifist/genocide approaches and bullet hell ideas. While it can be annoying and tedious after long enough.

The soundtrack is AMAZING. Every single area's atmosphere is accentuated by the theme and each boss theme tells you a little about who the character is, which i feel is very useful for character development in a game as short as Undertale is.

The game is also only about 6 hours long at the longest! 2 and a half if you're fast and even under 2 hours if you're just doing the bare minimum.

Finally, the multiple endings and ramifications of each. The ingenious code manipulation Toby managed to create 3 years ago is still present here, and is as terrifying as ever. Undertale's multiple endings and ways to abuse certain systems, usually the naming system, lend comedic value to the game.

The cons: At the start of the game, it's very light regarding story but after passing the 3rd boss the story ramps up, and especially towards the finale in one playthrough, the story REALLY ramps up, but takes some time to begin.

Despite its charm, Undertale's opening section is extremely tedious. Since it's so linear, it'll only take one try before you know everything, further playthroughs turn that area into a slog and all the adorable memes are only funny for so long, but the rest of the game literally spews relay value.

Now, i have owned all three versions of Undertale, have played the game countless times and i can tell you without a doubt it is still fun, even after playing for 2 years. The Switch version even comes with two new bits of content not seen in any other version that i won't spoil. Then for the price tag, to get this masterpiece? It beat out SSBU for God's sake.

In short. Amazing game, amazing soundtrack, amazing characters, amazing environments, even if they can get somewhat tedious f you like a good RPG and adorable characters + are looking for something semi-simplistic to play for fun (or for tears because this game will do that to you) Then pick up Undertale. It's an enjoyable adventure that's just long enough for people to get into but not long enough to be a black hole for your time.

Toby Fox's work is not just an anecdote: it is perfectly well-thought out. It hides something that connects directly or indirectly to anyone who has spent too much time with a gamepad in his hands.
