For anyone who played the initial release on the Wii U, there’s not a ton to revisit, though the combat remains immensely satisfying and the story continues to hold up and is further beefed up by new content. While the game won’t appeal to those seeking the tactical gameplay of a classic Fire Emblem, anyone who didn’t jump onto the idol train last generation could do far worse than picking up this Encore, especially with a dearth of other games in a similar vein on the Nintendo Switch.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore has both a J-pop-styled soundtrack and presentation that distinguish it from other JRPGs. Characters are also charming and the combat is extremely engaging despite its high difficulty. However, it is hard to recommend it to those who already played it on Wii U.

With one of the most addictive turn-based battle systems you’ll find today in a JRPG, Tokyo Mirage Sessions was a blast to play. It’s just unfortunate that the story and characters were about as bland as flavourless rice cakes.

If you never played the original and this kind of game is up your alley, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a lengthy JRPG with all the things you would expect, and it runs fantastically on the Switch in docked and undocked modes. But if you’ve also just finished the excellent Fire Emblem: Three Houses and want something more substantial to sink into that features classic characters from the series, you may find it a little disappointing.

It doesn’t have the depth of standalone Persona and Fire Emblem games, but this is a fun crossover that will please followers of both, and Japanese role-playing fans in general.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is a port of the 2016’s gamereleased for Wii U. In the porting process, Atlus and Nintendo addedsome brand new contents both for the story and the playerprogression. The Switch version come with very fast loading times butwithout any noticeable graphics upgrade. If you like Persona and FireEmblem games and classic jrpg, you cannot go wrong with this game.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore is a deeply fascinating game. On the one hand, it's mechanically one of the best RPGs I've ever played. On the other, its inability to appropriately handle serious issues, complete lack of character growth, and often downright creepy characterisation makes it a difficult game to recommend to anybody. It's a divisive game, but it's been given a second life on the Switch nonetheless. Whether or not that's a good thing is still up for debate.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore features some much-needed quality of life improvements, as well as a strong opening and novel combat. But, ultimately, tedious dungeon design and unrefined boss battles that plagued the original remain and prevent Encore from being the improvement it could be.

Gone pretty unnoticed during its first release on the Wii U back in 2015, the title developped jointly by Atlus and Intelligent Systems was and still is a niche game, mainly aimed at both JRPG and J-pop enthusiasts. This second iteration only provides some new minor features such as costumes and an original dungeon, where the characters dreams can be fulfilled... Quite a program, but still technically flawed, specially on TV mode.

Although it does have some issues with text readability in handheld mode, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore otherwise represents a clear improvement over its Wii U counterpart. The ability to speed up Session combos makes the combat feel substantially faster in the game’s later stages, and the new content exclusive to the Switch release is a more than welcome addition to an already sizeable package. Despite my one issue with it, I can’t help but consider it the superior version of an already excellent game.

Unable to combine the best of two beloved series, this JRPG can't really find its focus.
  3. Jan 16, 2020
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore’s story may appeal more to those already interested in this style of game, but even as a relative outsider the combat itself was more than enough to grab, and keep, my interest. I’m glad this hidden gem is now so easy to excavate.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions is the next best thing, and yet another perfect fit for the Switch. It’s a game that didn’t get nearly enough attention as it deserved at launch — but one that will hopefully find new life on Nintendo’s tablet.

Forget about censorship and just play theAmazing... the disappointment of not getting a persona 5 on the switch is being cured by this game. Forget about censorship and just play the game, if you're a fan of persona series or SMT you will enjoy this game. Didn't play on wii U back in the days. But this switch version i believe is the best. Faster loading screen and beautiful in handheld. Full Review »

I really tried to like this game. I'm a huge fan of Atlus and SMT/Persona, but Tokyo Mirage is just shallow. It has a very shallow plot and II really tried to like this game. I'm a huge fan of Atlus and SMT/Persona, but Tokyo Mirage is just shallow. It has a very shallow plot and I didn't care for the events nor the characters at all. All the Characters are super cliche and the main Protagonist is just bland. It tried to picture the Entertainment Industry in Japan, but does that in such a cheesy and ridiculous way, that I just couldn't take that game seriously. Everything is just super colorful and flashy, glittery. They tried to put some "darker" and more emotional moments into the game, but even those didn't work for me, due to their rather poorly execution. For example, in the first chapter of the game during supposingly emotional mometn, a Character sings a song to a person, but since the actual song just contains "lalala" instead of actual lyrics it's rather ridiculous than emotional. The few things I enjoyed during my 15 hours of playtime tho , were the battle system and the dungeons. The Battle System was definitely the best part of the game for me, since it's pretty much like SMTs/Personas battle system, but with a few twists and turns. The dungeons worked rather samey, but I did enjoy the different designs of them. Overall I have to say, that I'm rather disappointed with Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. In my opinion, a more serious tone highlighting the darker sides of that industry and a more fleshed out story and characters would have made that game a lot more interesting. It is a solid RPG at its core, but it's dragged down, by a poor Story and forgettable characters. Full Review »

I will list why this game is not worth your money.Again.
    1) Boring
    2) The fight comes down to session-spam . And yes, without this you won’t beat ANYTHING. In Persona 5 you can, here you can’t
    3) Bosses are terrible
    4) Characters flat cliches
    5) The protagonist is even worse
    6) No plot
    7) Crossover with FE comes down to character names and one mechanic
8)"New features" are not worth the word features.
9)Media convinced you that gameplay outside the dungeons is similar to P5? Nope, it is a boring set of give-bring-talk tasks.
10)And of course, having to run to the office every 10 minutes to create new weapons / skills is very convenient and not annoying at all.
Port quality is good at least.
