Tiny Metal has the core mechanics nailed down brilliantly, even if it has cribbed much of its structure from the famous Advance Wars franchise. Upon this handsome foundation Area35 has crafted a tactical wargame which is every bit as compelling, addictive and challenging as its inspiration, while adding in a storyline of surprising drama and complexity.

The perfect game for waging adorable warfare while on the bus, on your sofa, or on your toilet.

A lack of multiplayer at release detracts from how brilliant (and essential) Tiny Metal could have been, but it's the next best thing to Advance Wars that's currently available on the Nintendo Switch. Fans of that and/or turn-based strategy games will find something worthwhile here, despite that not so tiny price.

Overall, it’s a game that feels explicitly made for fans of a very specific series in a very specific genre. If you don’t like Advance Wars, you almost certainly won’t like this. If you like Advance Wars and come into Tiny Metal with slightly measured expectations, you will find a good strategy RPG that borrows unashamedly yet reverently.

What a lost opportunity. Every game must be reviewed by it's own merit, but Tiny metal tries so hard to be Advance Wars that we must compareWhat a lost opportunity. Every game must be reviewed by it's own merit, but Tiny metal tries so hard to be Advance Wars that we must compare both games in order to find what works and what not in the new game. The level design feels broken, almost all the missions have an attrition vibe where you must survive wave after wave of suicide units until victory. In fact you will see several times the victory screen without having to advance into the forced fog of war because the enemy suicide squad. The game hiccups repeatedly even in the introductory video, why? As there are not many game systems running. In fact, it feels more as a cellphone game than a console game, and that is the defining line between quality nostalgia and cash grab effort. Full Review »

Such a disappointment. Appealed by the Advance Wars lookalike features, I got fooled. Graphics are generic and the 3D is ultra tasteless. TextSuch a disappointment. Appealed by the Advance Wars lookalike features, I got fooled. Graphics are generic and the 3D is ultra tasteless. Text moves away without you seeing it. Combat cutscenes are a pain to look at. Story is unnecessarily complicated. So sad, I'll wait for Wargroove for a good game of the kind. It looks clearly unfinished. Full Review »
