Timothy, who loves his grandfather very much, decides to take a risky journey to the infamous Mysterious Forest. Legends speak of a magic mushroom able to cure any disease that grows into the forest. Timothy bravely begins his journey to find the magic mushroom.

The world is full of ruins, graveyards and tombstones, caves, swamps and weird characters: every place is made to look wild, abandoned and dangerous. Except for Timothy's grandfather, most characters are often mean or clearly driven by not-so-nice feelings.

Timothy and the Mysterious Forest has an "old school" style with some modern-age ideas. A mix of Game Boy graphics (heavily inspired from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening) along with meta-narrative, stealth system and action combat with an high difficulty level. The game mixes elements from adventure/exploration games with puzzle and stealth: exploration, reading and keeping a slow pace is the best tactic.

Timothy and the Mysterious Forest is absolutely a case of style over substance. It definitely looks and sounds the part; the developer has gone to clear lengths to emulate the feel of a classic Game Boy game. The problem is that when attempting to emulate the difficulty of a retro adventure title, they’ve gone one step too far and made the game a chore to play thanks to a number of unreliable mechanics and unfair enemy encounters.

Don't whine, think with your head (that thing above your neck). Especially hardcore was the first boss fight. It lasts for about 30 seconds, but every one of it should be absolutely precise and perfect. Overall, it was a great and robust challenge. Expand

But I had much more fun when I started to play with the solution from the internet. Game is retro styled, so it has to be hard to play. Movement is good, boss fights are good and story is so simple but clear, just like in old games. Game has issues typical for retro games, so it is recommended to imagine that the game is created for Gameboy Colour.

I like gameplay ideas of developers, but I do not know is it sense to create/play retro games without memories and nostalgia feelings of childhood.

I bought the game because it lookd fun and a bit zelda like. The design loogs good but thats all positive I have to say about it. The controllI bought the game because it lookd fun and a bit zelda like. The design loogs good but thats all positive I have to say about it. The controll is reeaalllyy bad and the fact that you can only take one hit and die doesn't make it better. I get it, they wanted to make the game a challenge but it doesn't make fun to play when the controlls are sooooo bad. Expand

I regret buying this game, even with it on sale. I highly recommend to stay away from this game. The only good thing going for this game isI regret buying this game, even with it on sale. I highly recommend to stay away from this game. The only good thing going for this game is the Gameboy color for nostalgic reasons, but that got boring 2 minutes in. The controls only consist of moving, interact (limited), and running (mapped to a button that is harder to use than the unmapped buttons available). When I moved, it would make my character move a few steps in the direction I was going at random intervals (common is one space ahead, other times multiple spaces ahead), even when I took my hand off of the controls. This is the only game this is happening on, so it's not my controllers (this occurred on the joy cons and pro controller). The puzzles in the game were mediocre at best, coming down of just desperately searching for items to progress. The enemies in the game are placed in positions that no matter what, you cannot escape them due to their speed being faster than your run and/or the traps throughout the game that the enemies avoid. They have rocks and pots that you are supposed to be able to pick up and use to defend yourself, but these were only in the starting areas and you cannot take them with you. The saving points are rare as I only came across three of them with the time I played making progress a nearly impossible at times. There is not a map to see where you've been or to plan your pathway, making navigating around annoying and frustrating. Overall, it feels like they took sprites from Link's Awakening and threw a project together in less than an hour to publish it. Expand
