Lila's one night of adventure provides a delightful few hours of relaxed gameplay in the chilled-out village of Sainte-et-Claire on a fateful rainy night. Highly recommended for those without much time, and in need of a respite from normality.

If you ever feel like a little mouse as you try your best yet you mostly go by unnoticed then The Spirit and the Mouse will surely connect with you as much as it did with me. Plus, it's one cute and laidback tale that's impressively well put-together.

This is a good, short game to be enjoyed after something intense. It has a cute plot, a satisfying end and plenty of entertaining characters. [Issue #64 – March/April 2023, p. 29]

The Spirit and the Mouse is a relaxing dawdle through a lovely French village. Playing as the cute, electric-fused Lila is a joy, however, the lack of options available to traverse does hinder the expedition. While the premise is packed with possibilities, the tedious and formulaic mission design makes this an arduous trek.

A lovely little gem with rough edges.

The Spirit & the Mouse is a 3D platformer with puzzle elements. You play as "the Mouse" in the quaint French village Sainte-et-Claire after a thunderstorm wreaked havoc on the electric grid and caused its villagers grief with faulty appliances. A grumpy Spirit Guardian named Lumion whose task it is to help the humans with their problems descends from the skies to the village and has a crash with the Mouse during which they accidentally transfer over their special electricity powers. With these borrowed powers, the selfless Mouse is now tasked to help out the humans.
The story is simple and straightforward, but it gets the work done.

Throughout the game, you explore the village, listen to the people talk about their problems which are all solved by powering up the local Kibbling Box, and to do that, you need to help Lumion's assistants, the Kibblings, carry out some tasks. These tasks range from fetch quests to puzzles and are varied in nature. Each of them is also pretty short; no task outstays its welcome.

Speaking of short, the game as a whole is not very long, you can complete the game 100% in under 10 hours. There is an optional task where you need to collect 137 light bulbs hidden throughout the village which gradually unlocks some useful bonuses.

The presentation is nice, but not perfect. I like the setting of a small French village at night. Most street and store signs are also written in French, so it's good if you know the language, although it's not necessary to enjoy the game. The music fits the aesthetic and consists of relaxing piano music. I take some issue with the character design, though, as most characters look like they don't belong in the same game. The Mouse looks very different from Lumion and the Kibblins, and the humans have their own visual style, too. It would have been better if the characters all had the same visual style. Another nitpick concerns the text which seems to have been translated from French to English. There were some weird phrases that didn't make much sense in English but would make sense in French.

Overall, I liked the game. It's fun, charming and doesn't outstay its welcome, with some minor flaws. Well worth giving it a try!
