After reading the other reviews, I was a bit afraid about very bad graphics. But it's not bad at all considering the Switch's hardware.

I already loved the game play, dialouges and story on the Xbox version. Now I can play it while commuting. I love it.

Let's face it... We've wondered at some point what life would be like if we were able to fly across the galaxy and visit alien worlds. Games like Starcraft, Star Fox and whatnot have tickled our fancy for Sci-Fi adventures. And this game, The Outer Worlds, is the latest of these adventures...

Published by Private Division and developed by Obsidian, the same company involved with the successful Fallout; New Vegas, this game is a combination of shooting, sci-fi, adventure and RPG rolled into one. In this game, you play as one of the colonists (called the Stranger) that was sent to the Halcyon Cluster to start your new life there. To pass the long time spent traveling there, you and all the other colonists were put in frozen hibernation. The only thing is... Your ship didn't exactly arrive there on time. in fact, you and the Hope colonists were long thought to be dead. After being revived by a mad scientist, you are sent down below to the surface of one of the colony's planets to try to find a means of bringing back your fellow colonists to life..

I found myself engaged with the story as well as the motif for the game itself. Controls were a bit stiff at times when it came to aiming for enemies, but it was enjoyable like on other consoles. Sound was also rather pleasing, particularly the music found in the background (sadly, there's no radio for you to listen to while traversing the Halcyon colony).

However, graphics had the appearance of previous generation console games (ala Wii U or the Wii), which can be a letdown for those who are used to graphics found on PC as well as XBox One and Playstation 5. Also, the gameplay was dragged down by a serious issue I had while on my ship. If had stayed on there for too long, the game would suffer from serious lag. Whether this is because of the Switch's limitations or the programming of the game itself, I do not know. Luckily, that was the only major issue I had with the game.

Overall, the game itself is basically Fallout:New Vegas, but a space/sci-fi setting instead of a post-apocalyptic setting. While I enjoyed the game, I can't really recommend buying this game at full price. It's best to wait until it goes on sale or a used copy is available for you to obtain.

Piss poor port. The textures and assets are not designed for switch, so they downgraded everything so switch could handle it. If a game is made on ue4, it will need to be made with switch in mind, because if not, ue4 ports will suffer. Nintendo needs sting hardware, especially since new 10-12tf consoles are coming

Like Pillars 1 port, should not have been released and when deciding to port, this should have been done correctly (like Witcher 3). Porting for no other reason than to make money on a subpar experience speaks volumes on corporate greed.

Hay veces en la que se agradece que un juego salga en varias plataformas, pero para sacar un cutre port al mercado y encima cobrarte precio completo por él... simplemente no tienen vergüenza.

Did not expect it to be this bad. The downgrade is huge which is unacceptable as the Switch can do a lot better. It doesn't look much better than Oblivion! You'd be better off just watching some Youtuber playing one of the other versions if you're out and about. Grim!

The game itself is a 9 so far for me, the port quality is maybe a 6 (better than I expected on this hardware) and portability is a 10 (for me). Anybody expecting xbone or ps4 performance doesn't understand the basics of hardware specs, and should only buy Nintendo-only games on their switches. Take a second and look at some of the "0's" review histories. Many of them follow a pattern of 0's and 10's of the same games with no nuance. Anybody can honestly follow that trail...

However, The Outer Worlds Switch is the MOST ambitious port of the Switch's lifespan, and its a pretty valiant effort too. This game runs from 20-30fps, on average at around 27-28. It performs well enough. The major downtown is the graphics, and if you can get past that, this is a great buy to get on Switch. Worth the 60 dollars.

Unplayable. This is the first time that I buy a game and I can't play. The resolution is really low, probably 540p or less, and even then everything is so blurry that the actual detail looks more like 320p or something. It's impossible to distinguish enemies unless they get close to you, which makes any sort of ranged play very frustrating, to say the least. I know the Switch is not theUnplayable. I'm gonna skip the gameplay and features this game has as it's a port of a fantastic game from last year. Nothing gameplay wise has been removed or changed. I've beaten this game on PS4 and currently on The Switch I'm at the halfway point.

    DOCKED:

The graphics are NOT good. The textures are lower than a politicians dignity here and that is saying something. On the TV it is absolutely noticable and pop in on textures of buildings and rocks. While I (yet) haven't had any issues of NPCs and enemies pop in 5 feet in front of me. The popin of some small environmental items has like a medium sized bolder or this streetlamp lookin...thing. And in the major towns and cities you can feel the frames dragging just a tad. Like it's switching between 29 fps and 30 fps. Not a game breaker for sure but it's super noticeable. And there's this odd sheen too it. Almost as if everything is made from plastic. The liquid textures look way off. Looking at blood on the ground I mistook it for jelly.

    Overall not pretty docked.

    HANDHELD:

Take basically what I said earlier but with a slightly more positive tone. I honestly think the devs built this with handheld exclusively in mind. It's the Witcher 3 effect where the game looks a tad better handheld than docked. I'm not saying it's way better on handheld. The textures seem to remain the same. But just more condensed so it's not as noticeable. Pop in rarely occurs and only on buildings. And I've also yet to encounter any npc popin on handheld as well. And frames rarely dip in large cities as much. Or maybe they do but again it's harder to notice.

This game to me is a 9 as it's a fantastic RPG. One of the best. But that's on PC/PS4 and while the gameplay here is untouched on the switch. The graphics took WAY more of a hit than I wanted to. My recommendation is buy it IF AND ONLY IF you exclusively/mostly play handheld. And you are not a huge stickler for graphics. I personally am not but even this is at my lower end of tolerable. This is still a fantastic RPG and if the Switch is the only thing you got it MIGHT be worth it to check out. If not I highly recommend keeping your ear to the ground on upcoming patches (if any happen) as if they bump it up just a tad and fix the pop in I would bump this to an 8 immediately and recommend this reguardless. It just needs more ironing out. It just has a few large noticeable wrinkles on it's well dressed suit. Once those are gone this is a must buy.

This review IS from the handheld only perspective because my dock is currently having issues and waiting to be repaired. So, I have no opinion on graphics in docked mode, they may be bad. I understand the Witcher 3, which I own looked fantastic in handheld but was simply atrocious docked.
However, if you are planning to play in handheld and are on the fence, don’t be worried. It’s well worth the wait. I skipped getting on my PS4 Pro because I buy any game that comes to both for the Switch. I love portability, and am still amazed this little device even runs current gen games, and does so as well as it does.
If you were good with ports like Doom, Witcher, Warframe, etc., you will be happy here. I thought all of those looked incredible. In fact, when I started this, I had to run and show my brother just how good it looked because I was completely blown away. No one should expect 4K Pro type graphics on a Switch to begin with, but it’s not the ridiculous downgrade others here say.
Anyway, the game is great. It’s my first time with it, so I have no prior bias going in. The story is very good. The characters, both in party or just npc’s Are all well written with great differing personalities. The dialogue is VERY well written. It’s basically Fallout in space, but better in every way. I personally love it more than Fallout 4 or even Obsidian’s own New Vegas, and it it quite hilarious. In conversation it can be really funny, thoughtful, or you be be angry and ignorant. It’s all about who you want to be.
It’s a classless game. You choose your stats and skills like any RPG, but as you level and add perks and focus in on your play style, the character develops into exactly who you want to be in this universe and allows you to play any way you choose in all aspects. You can even pick up negative traits if you choose that will add perks as well and add much flavor to your character development. These are usually funny as well and worth it just to add to the experience and making it more of one that only you will have. You get a ship to travel to planets in. There’s fast travel once you visit places on world. Quests are good for main and side.
Combat is also done very well, with many improvements coming with your character development and weapons you choose. It’s all very visceral. You can also slow time with a gauge that’s builds over time and increase that time or recharge rate through perks.
I’ve only put maybe 10 hours in and having a blast. I hear people say you can beat in 15 hours or 30 doing all side quests...but I’m still on the first planet 10 hours in, I still have quests to complete here that should take a couple more hours, and I believe there’s 6 or so planets, not 100%, but my point being that I’m fairly sure it will take me much longer to play through than you’re hearing.
Don’t be on the fence if you want to play it. It’s very good. And yes, I personally think, at least in handheld mode, that it looks great. Also, I haven’t noticed load times being overly long once. I really don’t understand the issues of others complaining.
Another wonderful Switch port of a great game. I’m glad I waited to play it on this console.

Every female in the game comes in 1 flavor, short hair, leader of the faction, undistinguishable mixed race and out of character dialog. There is no likable people, no rememberable moments, no niche or layered character interractions that make the worlds feel any bigger at all. Every single npc is at the mercy of terrible game design on a game engine that is boring. The map design itself is increadibly mundane for an "open world". Combat is so basic even for a Rpgfps. I'm sorry I ever supported this woke garbage, there is a reason I rarely buy videogames anymore. Its very clear that developers are out of touch and have probably never picked up a game controller in ten years or more. Its really sad to see Obsidian go in the direction they did. Expand

After having spent more than 40 hours on multiple playthroughs I can vouch that this game runs well with no crashes. Textures aren't as good as in a port like Witcher 3, but the entire game is intact and completely playable and enjoyable. Well worth the price. May look better on Switch Lite. Buy this version if you want to play on the go or only have a Switch.

Absolutely awful port. Don't waste your money buying it for Switch. Imagine trying to play a beautiful game like Horizon Zero Dawn, but on a PS2. Imagine the drop in quality. Now imagine hooking that PS2 up to a TV from 1972. Imagine that drop in quality, and you've got yourself a similar experience to The Outer Worlds on Nintendo Switch!

Putting a PC on game on Switch without fixing the game to optimize for the platform is clearly proven to be the mistake it is by this title. Poor showing.

This is a very bad port, it should never have been released. No attempt to optimize, bad visuals, and would have been better ported as a Telltale game on the Switch.

The outer worlds story and gameplay are here. The characters and decisions all make the jump and are not hampered by the switch and its hardware. Going in a knew there would be a hit to the graphics but I could handle a downgrade with pure graphics if things such as pop-in and draw distance weren't terrible. Unfortunately what I was greeted with was a rutty dirty looking game. The draw-distances are so bad I can hardly see enemies until I am right on them. That takes away some of my gameplay options as a player which is disappointing. There is some fun to be had when your actually in a fight or in the interior spaces of the game. The worlds with sprawling outdoor environments are what make this a hard pill to swallow and really drag the game down.

I played a dozen or so hours on the xboxone before this version was announced. I stopped playing to experience it on the switch. I wish I would have just stuck out the journey on the xbox. If your only option is a switch I would wait for a steep discount before embarking on this journey.

I loved The Outer Worlds on PS4.
However, this port has to compensate in so many places so it runs on Switch, that it's just not enjoyable playing it here.
If Skyrim works perfectly on Switch, then The Outer Worlds should too. There just doesn't seem to be enough time invested into this port. Verdict: Play it on another system. Rating: Gameplay: 2/5 - The controls feel bad on

Gameplay: 2/5 - The controls feel bad on Switch.
Level Design: 4/5 - Great! But exploration is bad on the Switch port, because of the loading times.
Soundtrack: 3/5 - Good, but I won't listen to it outside of the game.
Story: 4/5 - Great dialogue and a nice premise. But pretty shallow/simple in the end.
Graphics: 2/5 - Just not good on the Switch.
Length: 5/5 - Great for what it wants to be. About 20 hours.
Replay Value: 3/5 - Great because it's a choice driven RPG. But since you won't want to play it on Switch it gets some minus points.

It has the options to use motion aiming, and I can only imagine that some poor intern was so busy coding it that they forgot to make the normal (default aim is analog stick) aiming any good. How can I play and enjoy a game that is, at its core, a shooter, if I can't aim. Even just walking around the game feels awkward and clunky.

I saw it was on sale for 30 bucks, and it's the holidays, so I thought it must just be a sale, but clearly, it is a reduced price because nobody wants this! You can either sell guns and armor or break it down for parts to fix your own. Its a good balance of immersion and convenience of play.

I can only review this patch because I did not buy the initial release. I waited until this patch came out and then bought the game for cheap $20 physically.

    Pros:
    - great RPG
    - fun and interesting story
    - high replayability
    - well written characters
    - decent combat mechanics
    - lots of armor
    - good character customization
    - decent lenght (not every game has to be Witcher 3 or BotW in terms of length)

    Cons:
    - graphics (only on Switch) are still terrible in some places but its absolutely playable (but dont expect it to look like on PC or beavier consoles)
    - bugs and crashes (only on Switch; there are not many but they occured in my playthrough every now and then)
    - soundbugs... I mention this seperate from "bugs and crashes" because this is probably the biggest issue I have with this port. Walk by a river and you hear nothing. Walk over a bridge and you hear the river... but only if you stand in a specific spot. Same with guns, voices etc. SOmetimes sound just cuts of mid sentence only to re-appear soon after. Very immersive breaking.

    Summary:
Outer Worlds is a great RPG from one of the better studios in the world. I love the humor, the style, the story and the combat. It is all in all a very good game. But Obsidian should really find an other studio to manage their Switch ports. The switches hardware is no excuse since games like Doom and Witcher got great ports. The graphics are not a problem. If you play in handheld you wont recognize it most of the time. But other things like soundbugs should not occur.

Do I recommend this game on Switch?
Yes. All in all this patch seemed to fix a lot of issues and I enjoyed my time playing this game. for $20 you get a great RPG and playing it on the go or in bed is great. So if the Switch is the only console you have and you dont like PC gaming, you are doing nothing wrong with Outer Worlds.

This is clearly not the best switch port and runs far worse than Doom and Wolfenstein, but if you’re willing to overlook the graphics, you have a fantastic rpg that plays exactly how you want, and has some of the best writing I’ve seen in any game period. Hopefully they will add a graphical update similar to the Witcher 3, because the graphics really do hold it back in this case.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game is absolutely B O R I N G.
If it's your first time RPG, and you never played them before - maybe only then it could be something of 8-9. If you at least played The Elder Scrolls games, New Vegas, Fallout - avoid this game at all cost.
-Weapons are boring. Almost all of them the same, except some might have a special golden glow with some special small modification that barely changes their gameplay. And then you can find Science weapons that destroy everything, so - you won't even need to level up any other weapon and just go full science
-no interesting perks. If you played all or any of the games above - you know how fun perks can be made. Here? They're all just dull and boring and won't let you customize each character to truly make each of them special, or, well, do what the games' genre is - ROLE-PLAY. Each perk is just "lower damage received/more damage dealt/more inventory space", that's it. Hell, even skills are boring - you might just level them up when you need, or just level to level 20 to open up base functions, like companions' battle skills.
-Companions are absolutely bad. Feels like you're babysitting a small kinder garden group. You got a really shy girl, a really emotional old man, a "2cool4school" medic, "le funny" robot, and some guy who...just asks to be in your crew, without any big reason or story behind his back.
-Most of the armor is same in look, just re-colored depending on its company. What kind of laziness level is this? Also - WHAT COMPANY WOULD MAKE THEIR ARMOUR ALL BRIGHT-PINKY-CUTSEY COLORS?! HOW THAT LOGICALLY SUPPOSED TO SCARE ENEMIES/MAKE SOLDERS CAMOUFLAGE?! I'd understand if there would be, like, the ability for the player to customize armor color, but...there's none.
-Customization of armor and weapons in general. There's....none. Well...almost none. You got modules you can place on weapons that don't change weapon's gameplay at all, just another plus damage/plus scope/minus recoil stuff. And you can just pay money to make DMG of the weapon/armor points go up. That's it.
-The story. Hey - you know that big companies are bad? Alright, you drop down on the planet....you need to get to the city...which is owned by a big company. Who are bad, okay? People aren't given the medicine because...companies are bad, alright? People are ill because they're in a future where you have flying ships and lasers - but people don't know they need vegetables to balance their food, because....companies are stupid and bad, ok? Now you got to your ship, you get to a giant mothership, and your ship is confiscated because....companies are bad, ok? And people on this ship are free, but they struggle with food and everything because companies are bad, ok? This whole story is about you constantly dipping your face, player's face, into nothing but "companies are bad". There are not much interesting small stories, or something unique, no - it's either "help me, I owe big to company and they gonna do something bad to me if you don't help me" or "You, as a player, need to get a thing from company/you as a player owe the company" or "company did an oopsie, you as player msut solve it" . That's it, the whole story.
-The maps. They're ugly and boring. Not even because graphics are bad on switch, no - it's how those maps are. Completely empty maps with small buildings here and there (which are usually closed and you can't get in) or open houses that all look alike. Sometimes you can catch yourself feeling like you're walking in loops when it's somewhat a big building - that's how bland they all look on inside and outside.
There are a lot more troubles, like companion's perks being all useless except for perks that boost their passive skills(like technology, science, medicine), that add to yours, how there's just useless junk thrown everywhere that turns your game into collect-a-ton - else you might miss a good weapon or junk to sell. I think I barely got to the middle of the game from how boring it is. 3 is just for this game not crashing on Switch during the time I played it. My advice - don't buy this garbage of a game, buy Skyrim instead, at least it can offer some fun, even if buggy.

I'll get the bad news out of the way first. The graphics are poor, the frame rate suffers from frequent slowdowns, and there are some lengthy loading times.

On the plus side, you are still getting the full game and if the Switch is your only way, or handheld matters that much to you, it's still on the right side of playable.

The game itself is pretty solid. There's a far future setting, flitting around the planets of a distant star but it's also got a retro-future vibe with a lot of references to Golden Age sci-fi, including some nice mocked up posters that liven up the loading screens.

The factions are a mixture of ruthless, but incompetent corporations, and their opponents who aren't always much better. You can take sides, although there's usually a way to reconcile the two.

The characterization is also pretty strong. A few characters like Nyoka the drunken gunslinger and Sam the cleaning robot are a bit one note, but others like Vicar Max and Parvati the engineer have some hidden depths and one-liners that ought to draw a chuckle or two.

Combat is OK. The game's systems do the job, but there's not a lot of point to using the upgrade systems until you're approaching the end of the game, because you're constantly picking up better gear. The only exception is the handful of 'science' weapons which add just enough individuality to be worth keeping; well, some of them are, at any rate.

While you do get to make a few moral choices, the story ends up being quite linear in that you'll mostly end up going to the same places in close to the same order. So, don't expect too much in the way of replay value. It's still a fun ride through the first time.

Even when it was flawed, the game was great. The gameplay, story and overall feeling this game provides are outstanding.

If you like RPG and FPS, this is definitely a must. The expansions are also worth the money.

I truly love this game. Having that later Patch update really made a differnece. The story, setting and gameplay were great. Yea it looks a little bit better on Xbox1 or Ps4 but i was still impressed with the switch version. Again...great game and worth buying.

Wow. Reading the reviews of people that have played it on other platforms, I'm glad I bought it when it was on sale on the eShop. The action-RPG and humor elements make for an eerie cross between Fallout and Borderlands. I haven't played it on any other platform, but I can definitely resonate with the opinions of others who have played the other ports; this game runs sluggishly. I loveWow. I love FPSs, but this game's plodding (in my opinion) style doesn't suit me. I've already put it on my back burner. Expand

Although this game wants to sell itself as being the child of Fallout:New Vegas and Borderlands and fails at that mission for the most part, this does not mean that it did not have its enjoyable moments.

Verdict: buy on sale. Switch version has been patched and although not as good as PC, can still run.

The performance is okay, but the resolution is so low, its very hard for me to recognize things around me. I need to stand directly infront. Even then the textures are totally blurry. For me it's unplayable. Even with the latest updates. Very annoying.

Quite a controversial feeling for this game.
    Things I preferred :
    1. Good diversity of the game dialog decision with different outcome 2. Nice weapons and armors variation and upgrade 3. Nice character building and each map size. Things I abhorred: 1. the graphic quality on switch is bad, sometimes enemy couldn't be noticed with some in game lagging. 2. The companion's position

This game started of as one of the worst-running games on the Switch and therefore got a lot of hate.
However, they since patches most problems. I have been playing for 200 hours without noticing any bugs or major performance issues. 10/10 for the great stoy and the world-building.

I was hoping for a No Man's Sky with a heavy dose of satire but instead got a graphically poor linear shooter with weak rpg elements and a dull storyline. Very disappointed.

Without exaggeration, The Outer Worlds for Nintendo Switch is one of the worst games in terms of graphics, compared to which any remaster from the PlayStation 2 looks amazing. A team created a truly terrifying port of a very good game. In order not to feel cheated, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the creation of Obsidian on PC, PS4, PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.

Do not do this to yourself, if you want to play this game (which you should) go ahead and play it on any other platform than Nintendo Switch. This port was so poorly done that it made me wonder am I losing sight.

The Outer Worlds is a must-play for fans of choice-driven sci-fi roleplaying games. That said, it's hard to recommend the Switch port. [Issue #47 – July/August 2020, p. 68]
