This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game did not live up to the hype.
    Some disappointments:
    - A lot of recycled game mechanics from botw. It feels more like a DLC than a whole new game.
    - The introduction is too long, linear and tedious. This ruins replay-ability.
    - The construction-type game mechanic feels a lot like actual work, with a poor interface. If you do 3D modeling as a day-time job, playing this game is not relaxing nor entertaining. Much rather get back to work. It feels very off in a Zelda game.
    - The game is nearly unplayable for people with limited spatial awareness.
    - Storyline doesn't provoke progression.
    - Deviating from the storyline is unrewarding.
    - The vast spectrum of weapons and abilities makes for an overcomplicated play-style.
    - Seems to target a very young audience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Remove the Zelda name from this game and all of the nostalgia would be completely washed away and that is the only reason this game is getting such glowing reviews. Not only did Nintendo screw up the one thing that made BOTW so awesome, but they doubled down on so many things from BOTW that people hated. The storyline is pathetic outside of the first 10 minutes and the extended ending. The "all weapons have decayed" plot device makes exactly zero sense. Most of the sages are absolutely useless outside of specific combat situations, Tulin being the sole exception since he helps you glide better (with a massive recharge time, btw) and his crit shots can be super useful, especially when stunning a Frox for an unexpected easy hit or two. Some people complained about how BOTW was a largely empty world... well, that same thing still applies here, which is ironic considering how this game absolutely BURIES you in quests and pointless busywork to do basic things, like activating towers. Thankfully you don't have to climb them anymore, but I found myself rolling my eyes repeatedly when I'd come across a tower that had a blocked entrance for no good reason and I had to look around yet again for some alternative way in. That got old super fast and made lots of other things feel like a chore to get done. Bad design of one bit seeps into the design choices of other bits and spoils the experience by making it feel like a total slog.

Now... a lot of people complain about the visuals. Although I found a few really problematic areas (like the occasional mesh overlap), I didn't have much issue with how the game looked. Where flowing water turns into a waterfall looks absolutely awful, but that was the only major gripe I had with the visuals. I didn't have high expectations here, given that it's a Switch game, so that part's pretty much fine with me. Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Neutral... and ironically the only thing saving this from an even lower score.

Fusion mechanics... hoo boy. This could have been interesting. You can make some really gnarly swords and some really interesting and useful shields... but since they doubled down on the durability detail that almost everyone hated in BOTW, this got old super fast. This was the one part of the game that could have saved it but nope... epic fail.

Ultrahand is kind of interesting. Building vehicles can be rewarding, and Autobuild has a couple of pretty interesting prebuilt designs. Unfortunately, most of the designs you can find from schema stones or the Yiga are absolutely worthless, and with only 8 slots for custom designs, you will run out of spots quickly. I built a really nice cannon car that made it impossible for regular enemies to do anything about, and it was pretty funny when a Frox just nommed it. Unfortunately, the interface is extremely slow, so even this part of the game suffers from the feeling of a slog.

The economics are completely broken from BOTW. It's much harder to earn rupees, since almost everything has been downgraded in value, and starter clothing is stupid expensive until you do pointless quests... in one case, MULTIPLE pointless quests. Admittedly, finding out that Cece has a carrot addiction is funny, but that's not only an outlier plot point in the sea of extremely lame plot points, but it's also one told so many times in fiction that it just serves to say "hey where have I seen this before?". But anyway, back to economics... even the great fairies are broken in terms of economics... everything has a labor charge now? On top of forcing you do to filler quests? Just drag it out even more, why don't ya... no, just no... just take my 10k rupees and bugger off. BOTW did this part right.

Some people say that the combat is easier, some say it's harder. I say it's about the same. Enemies have new attack patterns, and Nintendo went into their back catalog and pulled old enemies from the past into this game. No one liked the Like Likes though, Nintendo... so bringing them back was dumb. I didn't expect to see Gleeoks return though. Where's the new stuff? Oh, Horriblins... whose name matches their design. Yeah, it's funny the first time to watch them bounce around on their butt, but they don't add much to the gameplay at all. When you first start the game, you are horribly outmatched, as the statistics of the enemies are pumped WAY up. Getting hit once from a regular Bokoblin can get you a Game Over. What nonsense is this? You can be one-hit KO'd from the weakest monster in Ganondorf's army. Terrible balancing issues permeate the entire game. And then we get to the final boss... wow. You thought Calamity Ganon was a pushover? This game's final fight makes Calamity Ganon feel like a legitimate challenge. Terrible, terrible balancing.

I could go on for days about how screwed up this game was and how much they completely drained all of the fun out of BOTW, but there's a character limit here. All in all, this game was an epic fail.

・Overwhelming lack of tutorials and terrible controls
Characters who have forgotten about the protagonist
・Cid, who didn't bother to mention the existence of the betrothed despite our deepening friendship
    ・Zelda takes over Link’s home

While there are various dissatisfactions, the worst aspects are the story and the excessive focus on Princess Zelda.

Zelda's motives for her actions continue to lack any genuine love for the people. She has become even more self-centered and self-absorbed. I can't find even a trace of willingness to help her. It all feels like a contrived and convenient happy ending.

This game is the disappointment of the year. I got it for free to test it and following all the hype I expected something great but what I ultimately got was nothing more than bad.

There are some positives; the game looks nice and the environments have a nice vibe to them. Furthermore, exploration is fun and the combination mechanisms are innovative and have a lot of potential. The allow for some really creative approach but are restricted by the clunky controls quite a bit (see next part for more on this). Too often a valuable building part falls down into the void and is gone until the game is restarted. That's not too bad though because it gives a sense of caution.

The music is decent and sound effects fit the ambiance well but neither are something special. Voice acting is well done for the few spoken lines there are, but again, Link doesn't respond verbally to anyone.

If that was everything about this game, it'd probably get a 7 or 8 score but the combat and the controls is what's the real catastrophe. They're just bad, really bad.
First and foremost, who'd though putting the "run button" on th topmost button was a good idea. Not only does it hurt my hands but it also blocks access of the other face buttons. It's also so unintuitive, as other similar games have the run command on the downmost button, a shoulder button or the right analog stick.

Even worse is the combat itself. While it doesn't help that everything breaks on you in the almost worst possible moment, switching weapons and gear is a chore in how the buttons are configured. That's as unintuitive as running. I'd rather open a menu and scroll through it then pressing two buttons while trying to choose the right weapon with a third one.

Finally, the biggest no-go for an action-orientated game the complete absence of an "evade button". You can block attacks with a shield, but if you don't have one you're screwed. Because there is no dedicated evade method you have to run to not get hit, using that stupid button layout, while also trying to get closer to attack. That results in getting hit by enemy attacks a lot, because they have a god-like precision and many hit like a truck, even with a literal pebble causing you to have to deal with even more unintuitive menus to access healing items.

    Conclusion:
I can't recommend anyone to play this game at all because combat and controls are abysmal. Even the most difficult Souls-likes have much better gameplay and are more enjoyable despite their difficulty.

All the old mechanics are back. And all the terrible mechanics are back. They lied about there being dungeons like the old zelda games, it is very much like the divine beasts. They really just rehashed the last game. If I had never played BOTW before, I would have been ecstatic. But it feels like I'm playing the same game, with the same formula all over again.

They took BotW and cranked up the bullsh*t tenfold with the Zonai devices and mandatory weapon fusing. I played it on a Switch emulator with unlimited weapon durability (with 60fps on 2K) so I can't even imagine the tedium normal players have to endure.

My main issue with the latest Zelda games is a lack of direction (even though I absolutely love Elden Ring where I was constantly lost). Yes, the game throws some objective markers at you but it's still overwhelming. That combined with it's lack-luster combat, unrewarding gameplay loop, boatload of puzzles and ungodly amount of walking make this a dreadful experience, the cumbersome mechanics of the Ultra-Hand and Zonai devices just added to my frustration.

It is what it is, I don't like Baldur's Gate 3 either, it's too slow. My ADHD brain needs quick and constant stimulation otherwise I'm out, no matter how highly praised it is by critics and the general populace.
Give me a weapon, some enemies to kill (with a good combat system) and I'm good. Leave the "wandering around aimlessly" and "finding what to do next" parts to real-life, or at least make it worth my while. None of the places look interesting or memorable.

In conclusion, for me this game is boring, frustrating and tedious.

If you relate to how I feel:

Don't let the internet make you play a game you don't like, just accept that you're different and move on.

I'd like to discuss some important points about Tears of the Kingdom that I think the reviews were lacking to clearly explain, and it is necessary to clarify the flaws in advanced to set up players expectations.

Float islands: while the trailers and the marketing massively showed the air lands, it is just the tutorial of the game and you are gonna finish it in 2 hours. There are some small floating island through the game, but they are not so big or interesting.

Map: the map of the game where you are gonna play 80 to 90% of the game is exactly the same. You are gonna spending uncountable hours looking for new korok seeds and new shrines at random places. I do feel a little disappointed here, cause I was expecting more of the floating islands or some significantly change in the original map. But not, you are gonna play the same game twice, but with a new story. There are a new place that I will not mention here (to let people discover while playing), but it unfortunately is not so interesting.

Story: the story is brand new and captivating. Every location shows the passage of time and people remember you when you approach. You will most of the time, follow the story buy a way like the memories in Breath of the Wild, finding places and seeing a scene.

New powers: here is where I think Nintendo spent most of the time developing the game. The new powers, in special the Ultra Hand, let players use the game as an amazing sandbox. You can craft unimaginable things and solve problems in creative ways.

Overall, I think this game would be great if Breath of the Wild didn't exist, but it does. Tears of the Kingdom felt to me like a copycat trying to monetize through the success of its predecessor. This game is worthy playing if you give some years between Breath and it, ir order to forget most of the map. I can not imagine other franchise to imitate so hard its predecessor, using the same map, and critically being so acclaimed by media. Sometime I think reviewers are afraid of Nintendo stopping sending game to them if they give bad reviews.

TotK starts with 4 shrines (last one snow) to get 4 spirit orbs disguised as light spheres, led by the ghost of an old hyrule king. First power up you learn in BOTW is magnet which allows your to float items through the air, first power up you learn in TotK is ultra hand which is basically the same thing. Sheikah slate is the same thing as the purah pad. Skyview towers are the same thing as the Sheikah towers, but rather than figuring out how to climb them, it’s just opening a door then a long winded animation of being slingshotted up into the air and falling back into that zone of the map. The Ascend power up is annoying with having to watch a long animation and then press “escape” when it finally goes through. The time reverse power up is pretty cool, but I’d rather have stasis and the bombs from BOTW. Climbing in the rain was always a very annoying feature of BOTW but it could easily be circumvented by advancing the story and getting revali’s gale early. Looks like they’ve taken that away and your best bet is roaming around and finding fallen rocks and doing time reversal on them. Or finding shelter and passing time at a fire, which was always tedious. Or sticky frog potion. Getting a power up that made it not as hard was much more rewarding. Also a bad problem to double down on. Story is a lazy, predictable “let’s take all your powers away”. Sky world was already done in probably the worst main game in the series, skyward sword.

I haven’t played enough to get the hang of the vehicle building yet. So I can’t judge that. The shrines and the Korok seeds were a neat, new experience in BOTW, but they’re just slightly amped up but very similar ideas in this “new” game that took 7 years and multiple delays to come out. That’s crazy they delayed it so much only for it to look and play pretty much exactly like an old wiiU game. Not to mention the frame rate peaking at 30fps and often dropping way below that into being super choppy. Not sure I’ve ever been so disappointed in a game

If you're a classic zelda fan that's itching for classic dungeons you can spend hours in trying to figure them out this game isn't for you (slightly larger unique looking divine beast is about all we got). 3. If you hated the weapon breaking in botw this is even worse because it both has weapon breaking which wasted enough time but now you have to waste even more time to "fuse" stuff to weapons just to be effective at battle. ---- the world is great, the exploring is great, just like botw but the rest of it I'd lacking and really does feel like DLC. BoTW was a great one time departure from the Zelda franchise but many of us are ready for a real Zelda game not a Zelda skinned open world game. Not saying the next Zelda can't be open world but it actually needs to have Zelda gameplay in it... dungeons, items you actually need to work for, meaningful weapon and gear upgrades (that don't break), a higher sense of fantasy. The Zelda formula is timeless and has proven itself over and over again, I'm not against change but I am against upended an entire franchise people love for something "new" and completely forgoing homage to the past. I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
