Excellent game by Nintendo. Ultrahand is potentially the best item in a video-game ever, with endless creative possibilities, mixed with the puzzle-solving; it's super brilliant. Over 220 hours put into this game, which is crazy for a single-player game. World feels alive this time and not empty.

The sidequest are awful with stupid rewards (100 rupee, mushrooms with rice etc), the combat system keeps being old and easy while you have food in the saddlebag you are unbeatable making all bosses a pile of trash including Ganon, the poor Gerudo dies as fast as you press 1 button, his 3rd phase is like ... Ok QTE escene would be work better than this.
The armors are just a collectible you wont use more than 3 or 4 and are from bow literaly the rest still there for nothing cause the bonus they give are another trash.
Music is impressive, the rest is plenty of flaws.
Feels strange that in the scenes link keeps being a mr bean and another characters asks and answers by themselves, even the master-sword talks more lol.
Definitely not perfect, being fanboy dont make any favor to the franchise, needs a big update on the combat, side-quest, Link and even in the main history, and make sure the rewards are worth, not just a farm of masked collectibles

I completed the game last week after playing for 3 weeks nonstop, got all shrines and sidequests complete (but not seeds/armors upgrades/photos), just like I did with BOTW.

I'm a huge Zelda fan and completed all games in the series, I had the same opinion as I often read about BOTW, it's an amazing open world game filled with content, but a very poor Zelda game. I hate how people praised the "you can do anything in any order" part, that's exactly what makes it stray away from the formula. You are supposed to unlock unique items in a specific order to gain abilities and unlock harder sections of the map, that's what makes a Zelda game a Zelda game. I also hated like most the weapon destruction, and the stamina/climbing that while it helped with locomotion, it was painfully slow and long and padded the playtime with annoying moments doing nothing but waiting. Nevertheless, I enjoyed pretty much everything else.

Come TOTK, I initially got a bad first impression when they showcased it with a construction aspect. I hate construction games, if I wanted to do so I would play Sim Cities or Minecraft or online survival games, not a single player Action RPG. But fortunately, it ended up being not bad at all. The fact that pieces are limited and break after a while restrict it to smaller sets and mostly to get past a simple puzzle, so I actually liked it.

The new paragliding mechanic is great for faster locomotion too, but completely rendered the horses useless (never used one in the whole game except for quests). It also brings the same negative aspect as climbing that half of the gameplay time is spent teleporting to a tower, launching up and gliding toward the objective point, which get long and repetitively annoying with nothing happening.

As far as the rest of gameplay elements go, there's absolutely nothing else, it's a complete copy/paste of the same game with no redeeming qualities that can explain the long development time, same engine, same graphics, same combats, same quest structure. I think they trolled us by making the weapons "decayed" and even easier to break. Instead of making longer more complex shrines, they just added even more!

The depths seemed cool at first, and I loved the Yoga questline in there, but after it was done I realized it was just an empty mess. It's 10x bigger than it should have been and there's absolutely no reward for lighting it up, it seems like a big afterthought they didn't complete. "Just make the players run along in the dark for hours with no goal".

But the part that disappointed me the most are the side quests. In every previous Zelda games, including BOTW, they were at least interesting to complete, always with some funny or clever aspects. In TOTK, they are just fillers, they are boring collectible or just going back and forth to places. I feel like they forced themselves to place references to every character of other games, even if it didn't fit in the story and the world, they put them there as an afterthought to fill in a checklist of references.

That said, I still loved my time playing it, but I absolutely cannot agree with people saying it's the game of the year, it's just a downgrade to this marvelous series. I seriously hope Nintendo scraps the concept and reboots anew again for the next title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tears of the Kingdom brings so many fun mechanics to the already great foundation that Breath of the Wild created. The depths added hours of fun exploration and although there are not too many sky islands, the rewards I found up there were always a joy to obtain. The dungeons are a huge improvement over its predecessor but once again the shrines can start to feel a little repetitive and tedious after some time.

Being able to visit this version of Hyrule one more time and experience the changes to the overworld and characters left me constantly smiling. The only reason this score is an 8 for me instead of higher is parts of the game do feel very similar to BOTW which in this case is both a positive and a negative.

The freedom, the main and secondary quests and the number of things to do make the game very long, but still always something to discover even when you think nothing is left in certain areas. The possibility of building customizable machines further increases the hours of play and allows you to do as you wish.

I had a pretty well thought out review prepared for TotK to justify giving it such a middling score, but through the power of the internet and Error 403, that review has, much like my hopes for this game, been cast into the pits of despair, consigned to endless oblivion.

I had a pretty well thought out review prepared for TotK to justify giving it such a middling score, but through the power of the internet and Error 403, that review has, much like my hopes for this game, been cast into the pits of despair, consigned to endless oblivion.

In short, as I've already wasted enough time talking about a game I can't seem to get myself to enjoy:

-Ultrahand is a novelty that quickly becomes tedious and jerks me out of any immersion I may have felt regarding the exploration and story elements.

-The same can be said for weapon durabilty and the new "feature" of using Link's power of "Gorilla Glue" to attach random bits and bobs to a stick, turning it into a new-and-improved stick. I didn't have a problem with this in BotW, though it was annoying at times; the new mechanic just means I'm forced to spend hours of my finite existence attaching things to other things; it's like I'm trapped in a nightmare where I'm forced to make children's crafts and then go out into the wide-open (and sort of boring, to be honest) world and beat something to death with them.

-I can't comment on the story, as I haven't been able to force myself to endure the water-boarding that is the new "Super Zelda Maker" building mechanic long enough to get to anything approaching an interesting story hook. Notwithstanding this, I've received mixed signals on the story from other reviews: some swear it's the best thing since sliced bread; others say it's boring and full of contrivances and retconning of lore from other games. I sincerely hope the latter isn't true, but given i've already been spoiled on a few major plot points and was pretty unimpressed with them, I don't have high hopes.

All in all, this game might be acceptable if it didn't have the Legend of Zelda or Breath of the Wild names attached to it, with all of the expectations that entails. But as a Zelda game, it's not at all what I expected, and sets a precedent for the series that I have no interest in. Here's hoping this is an anomaly and not a guidepost for how the games are going to be moving forward. The saying goes that a bad craftsman blames his tools. But I came here to go on an adventure and save a princess, not build 500 rafts and bridges.

Negatives are that game is based on heavy grind and is like poor mans minecraft at moments. For every cell for energy there is grind, to use auto creation even more grind... Tears of the Kingdom is a really tricky situation. Does it deserve a higher rating than BotW because there's clearly just more to do? Or does it deserve a lower rating because every criticism of BotW hasn't been addressed at all? (Weapons break, rain interrupts climbing, and ridiculous/nonexistent rewards for exploring)
Due to the increased price, I'd go for the latter, which always

The shrines were much fun and focused on solving puzzles. The weapon durability is annoying, however, it does encourage you to use different weapons, which can be fun when using the fuse ability to modify them. Ultra hand is cool and adds a whole new dimension to the gameplay; it's not a gimmick and is quite useful.

The game doesn't have traditional temples, but I do feel that it makes up for that by having an interesting world full of different regions, numerous shrines and also wells, which is a new staple for the series. Traversal is quite good even without the need to use a horse. The horses are difficult to control anyway.

The game offers a LOT of side adventures, side quests and shrine quests. I generally focused on the main game but did one or two dozen side quests here and there. This is the first ever main Zelda game to feature voice acting. The voice acting is okay; nothing special. As usual, Link doesn't talk.

The graphics are slightly improved over BotW but not by much. The game may appear graphically outdated compared to other games on other platforms, but overall it looks fine and nice. The frame rate could be better though.

Many assets from BotW are indeed recycled for TotK, such as musical pieces, certain characters, flora and fauna, items and enemies. I really think that this, and the fact that there are no traditional temples, is ultimately what prevents me from giving this game a 10. But it makes up for it by having plenty of new things like the depths, the sky, new abilities, etc.

I played all games since Ocarina of Time and enjoyed all of them. This game is unbelievably big with a crazy amount of things to see and do, but that is also the reason i dont give it a higher score. Everything feels so overwhelming, and was very confused on why i had to do a lot of seemingly unrelated side quests in order to progress in the main story. I feel like they are called side quests for a reason, they shouldnt be mandatory to finish a game.
For example: After i got beat by Ganon in my first fight with him i come to realize is was missing a sage (Mineru). Now i need to do a quests that you can find in Kakariko village in order to progress, if you dont get the hint like i did you will search the map for mutiple hours before you know you had to go to kakariko village and do this quest. Now after you do try doing this quests you need to do a lot of side quests in order to get some purah tablet functions (scanner+) so you can find the electric clothing pieces. After hours of tedious boring quests you can finally find the sixth sage and you are ready to fight Ganon.. But in order to know where Ganon is, you got to, you guessed it, do more side missions with the researcher girl in the lookout posts. These are some of the most boring missions ever, where you follow statues for hours in the underground, while you just want to finish the game and kill Ganon. After all these hours of doing boring side quests, you come to realize Ganon was just under hyrule castly.. Why all the sidetracking just to get this information?

People do not like to hear what I am about to say, but it felt like a DLC; downgraded abilities, sure the weapon fusing and Ultra-Hand was great but I would've loved to keep Revali's Gale. Story-wise the game is great. Breath of the Wild is just that much better..

TotK is also a technical masterpiece achieving a level of interactivity that few games could, even in PS5 and Xbox. In my opinion there was a lot to be desired and few were met. Really really wanted to enjoy it. But this seems more like an expansion than a new game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was incredible. While it uses the same map, this game was in a unique position as a sequel because you get to see the world change and how it’s adapted. The new additions were great with the caves, sky islands, and depths. The sky islands could be more expansive but they’re still impressive. The story is leaps and bounds better than botw and while the voice acting is still meh, it’s much improved from the last game and Matt Mercer kills it as Ganondorf. The actors for Sonia and rarue were also pretty good. The music was incredible. Every new track fits the setting perfectly and the boss tracks are bangers. The regional missions are cool and the temples are far better than the divine beasts. They aren’t traditional dungeons but each one has a unique theme and the puzzles are still fun. The new abilities are also great and add so much to the progression of the game. The durability was made even more fun because of the fuse ability, and being able to make vehicles with untrahand in so cool. The physics are insane and the fact that this game runs on a switch is a testament to the incredible game design. The final boss is the best finale in the Zelda series and looks and plays fantastically. One of the best games of all time, no question. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The dungeons are still lack luster and repetitive compared to previous zelda titles. The overworld is mostly unchanged as are the graphics, music and a lot of the equipment. That's disappointing. However, there are two new overworlds to explore — there's not as much to them and they're both repetitive and mostly empty, but they're still new additions I guess. The new powers are fun, but feel goofy, clunky and in some ways made for the memes. That being said, the memes are hilarious, so again, silly and disappointing? For sure. Still fun? For a while.
Was hoping for some exciting new improvements to the botw system for the $70 price tag, but alas.
Overall, it's a really fun game for the first few hours, then the enjoyment steeply drops. Far from the best zelda title ever, it's over hyped and full of recycled content...
The UI is horrible. Do I really need to scroll through LITERALLY EVERY ITEM IN MY INVENTORY to select an attachment for my arrow FOR EVERY SINGLE SHOT?
The building mechanic, while interesting, is really pretty clunky and takes a long time to line things up just right if you're building something complex. If you're building something simple, it feels like filler content.
Combat is weak. Spend 15 minutes mastering perfect dodge and the game becomes a cake walk. But don't worry, it won't always work because your weapon will break after 15 uses, forcing you into another chore.
Lots of farming. Should have been named Tedium of the Kingdom.

TLDR: super repetitive. mostly recycled content. not the best zelda game. UI is awful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nobody's here to engage with an extensive academic paper, so I'll swiftly address this matter in a straightforward manner, encompassing both positive and negative aspects (with the negatives referring to elements I personally didn't favor but that don't significantly impact the overall evaluation).

    The Positive:

If you were a fan of "Breath of the Wild," you'll be pleased to learn that all its mechanics have essentially made a return.
The fresh runes introduced are, for the most part, quite impressive and inject innovation into exploration.
While the revamped overworld isn't flawless, I'm willing to acknowledge that the enhancements exceeded my initial expectations.
The new areas introduced are captivating. Exploring caves and underground spaces is particularly enjoyable.
The game's designated dungeons, often referred to as such, represent a notable enhancement over the Divine Beasts in the previous installment.
    The Negative:

If there were elements of "Breath of the Wild" that didn't resonate with you, you might be disheartened to discover that every fundamental gameplay mechanic from the previous game has made a reappearance.
Employing the Ultrahand for construction purposes (its other functions are acceptable) is frustrating. Straying from the intended construction projects often leads to inefficacy. Opting to construct bridges seems to be the most effective and amusing choice.
Occasionally, it's evident that certain parts of the game world weren't designed with your expanded toolkit in mind. This is likely due to the fact that these areas were developed with the tools available in the original "Breath of the Wild."
The narrative is notably subpar. While following the same minimalist narrative approach as its predecessor, it suffers from an even weaker script. Ganondorf's character deserved a more compelling treatment.
    The Less Favorable Aspects:

Irrespective of the game's nomenclature for them, these "dungeons" don't conform to the traditional Zelda fan's expectations. The Divine Beasts weren't outright disappointing, yet they left me yearning for a more gratifying experience. The dungeons in this installment are essentially refined versions of the Divine Beasts, albeit lacking the unique control mechanics. Nonetheless, they do represent an overall improvement.
The removal of whistle-sprinting is regrettable. Although it was an unintended glitch that needed addressing, it was undeniably practical for swift navigation. The absence of a replacement for this mechanic is a missed opportunity.
To summarize, the game is undeniably enjoyable. However, considering the six-year development span and the $70 price point, it's a substantial request for what the final product ultimately delivers. It often feels more akin to an extensive DLC rather than a genuine sequel—not in terms of scale, as the game certainly boasts an expansive scope, but rather in terms of its fundamental essence.

It's neither really bad nor really good. The same map is used with added empty underground and sky. Graphics have not changed. Most of the time it's very foggy preventing long distance views. The making of your home is a nice touch but could use more customization. The swords and gear constantly breaking is a pain. It has some neat ideas but needs a lot of work. The majority speaks.

The pinnacle of creative sandbox gameplay yet to be demonstrated in an action adventure title. The art, sound and overall open world level design is impeccable.

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
