Zelda fan here. Just picked up my copy yesterday and haven’t been able to put the Switch down. The game has great game feel all the way down to the sword swinging, great flow by adding things to do between each level (dungeon) and memorable characters from Marin to Sale. I give this a 10/10 scoring not only because of the reasons listed above, but mainly because I can’t find too much that’s really wrong with it. I can understand how some people find the dungeon creating mini-game at Dampé’s Shack dissapointing, but as a replacement for the once gimmicky yet neat Game Boy Printer room, I feel it does enough. Some boss fights do feel a bit too easy, but as a 1:1 remake of a 20+ year old Game Boy game, I can understand why. Other than that, I can’t find anything bad to say about the game. If you are a fan of Zelda, especially if you haven’t played LA already on the GB version, this is a must get. If you are new to Zelda and are looking for the right one to take your first step into the franchise, I would recommend this one definitely. Maybe wait it out until it goes on sale if you are iffy on the whole $60 pricing, i’ve seen that rub some people off the wrong way. Expand

An instant classic with fantastic graphics, art style, and a satisfying combat system. Link's Awakening is a must have for every Zelda fan out there. While frame rate dips are an issue right now, I would fully expect to see a near future patch released to stabilize performance.

As someone who has never played links awakening going into this remake I was excited to play a game that is held at such a high standard and loved by many for the first time. The second I booted the game I could tell this game would be challenging but a good challenging. This game is also a true remake in the sense of everything from the original game still exists, including the crazy and bizarre story where link gets lost at sea and drifts onto the island of koholint, where an owl sends you on a journey to destroy a giant egg atop a mountain where the wind fish resides ( I told you this story was bizarre.) Everything on Koholint island makes a return from the original game except the camera shop since there is no longer a gameboy printer or camera, but is replaced with a new dungeon maker that is run by dampe. Now what makes links awakening truly special is that while you are making your way through Koholint island you will encounter many different characters throughout the Nintendo universe. You’ll fight and stomp on Goombas while making your way through dungeons, run into Kirby trying to being eaten, save a chain chomp and even give someone a picture of princess peach. The previous 8-bit world has now been transformed into this artificial plastic world to emphasize that link is living in a dream world. The game has also incorporated the masterfully crafted cutscenes adding even more significance to the story and allows you to build a connection with these characters. Koholint island has also been turned into one single world that you can traverse seamlessly. The games biggest con comes at the price of this stitched together world. Some areas are a little too much for the switch to handle causing frame rate dips both on handheld and docked mode. You’ll also experience these dips when there are too many enemies or other elements on the screen. While this issue is quite rare, when it happens it is extremely noticeable and can be quite jarring. Unlike in other Zelda games where you’ll find the dungeons main item and solve puzzles centered around the item, in links awakening you will end up spending more time trying to figure out how to get into a certain room rather than solving unique, difficult puzzles allowing you to progress in the dungeon. One major disappointment comes in the dungeon maker. Something that at first looked so extremely promising and could have even lead to a main line Zelda dungeon maker game similar to Mario maker, ended up being this very mediocre add on with no other way to share your dungeons other than with the link amiibo, which seems like a huge oversight. They would have been better off keeping the camera shop allowing you to go around taking pictures and share them to Facebook or twitter through the photo albums app. Although links awakening suffers from a couple of mishaps along the way, it’s pros greatly outweigh the cons delivering one of the most beautiful, unique and bizarre Zelda games to date.

I’ve been pretty steadfast in my critique that 2019 was a bland year for video games. While there were some diamonds in the rough, 2019 certainly lacked the excitement of years past. While there were some diamonds in the rough, 2019 certainly lacked the excitement of years past. That is, unless you were a Nintendo fan, though, because in 2019, there was always something around the corner. Even with a few small missteps in “Yoshi’s Crafted World,” “Daemon X Machina,” and the polarizing “Pokémon Sword & Shield,” there were equally as many well-received games, including “Super Mario Maker 2,” “Fire Emblem: Three Houses,” “Astral Chain” and “Luigi’s Mansion 3.” One of the other noteworthy titles was “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening,” a full remake of the original 1993 game for the Game Boy. While that game has received heaps of praise then and continues to today, I personally never really played the game. I owned the “DX” version for the Game Boy Color as a kid, but having known nothing about the “Zelda” series back then, it was lost on me. Still, I was pretty excited when they announced this Switch remake simply because of how great it looked, and beyond it being pretty gratifying to finally get to beat the game after so long, I was very pleased by my entire experience with the game.
“The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening” just bursts with love: you can tell just how much effort and attention was put into making this the best remake possible, and the effort shows. I love the visual design of the game; it’s a loving recreation of the original game with a great, toy-like design that fits the game perfectly and is just brimming with color. I love how the game almost has this look of being an interactive play set, it’s perfectly captured and captivating. Gameplay-wise, the game still feels like it belongs in 2019: sure, like many “Zelda” games, I highly recommend you have a guide nearby, since a number of the dungeons and puzzles can be overwhelming (as can the size of the map), but it’s the type of game that makes you feel gratified when you complete them. The game has its challenge, but it’s not “fake difficulty,” it’s a genuine challenge that works in the games favor. The boss battles also grew on me a lot, I initially thought a few were a bit simplistic, but they were still plenty of fun to fight, and the final boss was definitely a highlight. The music is also fantastic, the relaxed vibe of the game is strong (I got a kick of just running around and cutting grass, for example), and I also thought the game did a nice job with its writing, too! Koholint Island, beyond its stunning visual design, is home to a variety of memorable characters, and there’s plenty of emotional moments that are conveyed well, even as a title that follows the “Zelda” tradition of being rather minimal. I might not be able to fully compare this to the original game, but what I can say is that I can tell that so much love when into this remake, and the effort shows in a fantastic game.
There are a few minor critiques that I have that hold it back a bit: I’ve heard a number of people complain about some frame-rate drops, and yeah, I did notice a few of them. Having played the game both docked and undocked, some of the dips were noticeable. Not quite enough to break my immersion, but enough to wish they would be polished a little bit more. I’d say my big concern, though, is the length: I wouldn’t exactly say it’s the shortest game you’ll play, but keep in mind that, with this game, you’re essentially getting a remake of a handheld game on a system that, at least partially, is a console. It might feel a little longer if you’re like me and you have some trouble figuring things out, but I can imagine this being one of those “breather” games you play between big ones, since it’s short enough. And I think it’s something for me to hang around because, unfortunately, the game still costs $60 to purchase. I absolutely think the game is worth playing, but I’ll totally understand that some people might be on the fence about paying so much for a handheld remake on a console, and I do think that’s valid.

Overall, though, whether you wait for a price drop or not, “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening” on the Switch is a game I absolutely recommend. It’s a loving remake of a classic handheld “Zelda” game, and it’s a memorable experience from start to finish. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer who has played the original versions of the game, or someone who’s never gotten a chance to, I think this remake has a little something for everyone. Do yourself a favor and play “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening,” because it’s another excellent addition to the incredible lineup of games that the Switch has continued to amass.
Final rating: 9 out of 10 “Awesome”

People often argue about linearity vs exploration in Zelda. I think this strikes the best balance. This is the first game in a long time that I never checked a FAQ when I got stuck. I just roamed a bit and found the answer, but didn't feel like I was being led around by the nose.
The Dungeon Designer was sorta fun, but sorely lacking. It has a lot of potential for a full release a la Mario Maker.

Link's Awakening on the Gameboy was my first Zelda game. It had a memorable score and characters. The dungeons and bosses were some of the more unusual but unique. It's such a beautiful game with a charming story.

It's appropriate that they opted for the visual style they did. At first I wasn't sure what to make of it. But the toylike nature not only complements the old Gameboy look, but it also fits the dream like narrative that permeates the story.

You are Link who finds himself shipwrecked on Koholint Island. You are tasked with driving back the nightmares to wake the Windfish.

Due to the nature of the gameboy? The world map is fairly small but it is dense! It's incredibly packed with all manner of interesting things to see and do. Whether you kick back and try your hand at the fishing or crane games. Or maybe you check out Dampe's dungeon builder.

In fact Dampe's dungeon builder is the only real new addition to the game feature wise. It's unfortunate then that it's a bit of a bust. There is no online functionality and your creative options are kind of limited. It's a shame because a Zelda maker could have great potential.

This 3DS remake has a camera that constantly follows link as opposed to the screen to screen transition of the original. Also updated is the inventory and you have to swap items far less now. it's a small quality of life improvement but it means a lot.

It's a fantastic remake. If you have never played the original? This is a great opportunity to do so.

This is the funnest game I've played in the longest time. I love the graphics and the art style. They're like little clay figurines. I also like the the blurred edges too although sometimes it can be a bit annoying but it keeps Link in focus. Also the gameplay is classic Zelda which I love.

Growing up on the original Link's Awakening I'm thrilled to bits that it got a remaster.
Overall the changes are quite welcome, though I question why they removed the photo shop in favor of Danpe's dungeon crawl.

Eagle's Tower is still the best dungeon ever designed for the Zelda franchise, and the mapping features make Turtle Rock very simple to navigate.

    Spoiler below:
Though they made a change to the final boss that removes a large amount of the challenge from the fight. For some reason now, instead of roaming around the arena freely, the final boss attempts to stay a certain distance away from THIEF. Which once that's figured out you just stick him in an upper corner and lazily shoot arrows to win. Kinda boring.

One of the most famous and well-received games on the Gameboy is back with a complete remake on Nintendo Switch. From updated graphics to the new quality of life changes to the gameplay, does Link’s Awakening (2019) live up to the original or does it take too many missteps along the way?

Link is sailing across uncharted waters when suddenly his raft is struck by lightning and he wakes up on a mysterious island with a giant egg in the center of it. He meets Marin, a young girl who lives on the island tells Link about the legend of the Wind Fish and how awakening this creature might help him escape the island. Much like the original game, the story is simple and to the point. The new setting that Link finds himself in is very different and almost dream-like compared to other games in the franchise While most of the story is told at the beginning and end of the adventure, there are many small interactions between well-written characters and even touching moments within these interactions. Don’t expect this to be a grand adventure like in previous titles since its story is more like a peaceful and calm dream, which ties heavily into the game’s theme and atmosphere. The story is a fun, bite-sized adventure in the world of The Legend of Zelda.

The gameplay is very similar to past entries that deal with the top-down perspective approach. You go through the world, trying to find dungeons and then solving the mysterious within to get one step closer to your goal of awakening the Wind Fish. This game truly harkens back to the Gameboy days, since you are not given many hints when solving puzzles and I got stumped at least once or twice throughout my 15-hour playthrough. It feels satisfying solving the puzzles and getting to the next part of the game. There was never a time I felt frustrated at any point in the game. The whole experience was nothing but fun from beginning to end. With that said, veterans that played the original might not find much challenge if they remember the solutions due to all puzzles being the same. If I had any nitpick it would be that switching items can be a bit of a pain since you have to contently swap items in a pause menu. It would be nice if they gave the option to swap items using the d-pad instead. A slight annoyance but nothing too major. The only new addition to the game is a dungeon creator but this mode is a little bare bones. You have to collect room pieces throughout the campaign and these pieces can be arranged in any order to make a dungeon. With very limited tools to create with and a lack of online sharing, I could see this being nothing more than a fun little distraction from the main story that you might fiddle with once and never again. Despite these flaws, this does not take away from the incredible light-hearted adventure.

This is not one of the most technically impressive games on the Switch but it does not try to be. The game tries to capture the feeling of playing a Gameboy game with modern HD graphics that we would expect from this console. It runs at a consistent 30 FPS but due to the simple graphics, I’m surprised it does not run at a full 60 FPS. This is combined with the fact that the open world does not look as good as it should due to weird draw distances that make the bottom of the screen blurry when traversing any open landscape. The rest of the game does not have this issue so it’s weird to see such a thing on a simplistic game. The soundtrack is amazing and perfectly captures the essence of a small game like this. I think this game needs a bit of polish on the technical side of things but these small flaws are something you will get used to throughout the course of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (2019) reminds me why the original Zelda games are such classics and why there is still a place for them next to bigger endeavors like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game has minor presentation issues and some more quality of life mechanics could have been added but this is still a solid game. This game is worth 60 dollars despite its short run time due to the time and effort that was put in this remake. If you’re not a huge Zelda fan, you could wait for a discount but I would recommend a purchase as soon as you get the chance.

    Pros:
    +Simple and Fun Story
    +Great Exploration and Puzzles
    +Great Soundtrack

Link's Awakening is a remake of the 1993 Game Boy game of the same title. it is the only Zelda game (at least to my perception), that does not have Zelda and/or Ganon but has completely different characters; and talking about different, Nintendo went really crazy with adding characters from other Nintendo franchises like Kirby, Yoshi, Goombas, Boos, Piranha Plants and many others. It does sound crazy, but it sure does work a lot!

The game is significantly balanced between staying faithful to the original version and having additions (attacking diagonally, jump attack etc.) which combined with fantastic art style make the game look really fresh and new.

The graphics are absolutely stunning in both handheld and docked mode; Link, Marin and the whole Koholint island look more cute and charming than ever. However, there are some frame drops here and there in the outer world, but they do not affect gameplay and I am sure that Nintendo will definitely improve the game to perfection with future updates.

The game could be on the easy side for some, but Nintendo has Hero Mode available right from the start for those who look for some real challenge. Moreover, the ability of creating your own dungeons at "Dampé's Shack" adds a lot of replay value to the game.

Overall, Link's Awakening is a fantastic experience on the Switch. Nintendo brought back the 2D/2.5D Zelda formula in an exeptional way. It is not only one of the reasons to own a Nintendo Switch, but it could also work as an introduction to the whole Zelda franchise. People who played the original will feel the nostalgia right from the start and those who never experienced the game before, will definitely have a unique and memorable experience. I just cannot recommend the game enough.

The only criticism I have for the game is the frame rate issues which can usually arise when you come out of a building. It only lasts for a second or two but a big budget AAA game like this shouldn't even have this to begin with.

Other notes: This is probably one of the more 'out-there' 2D Zelda's that you can play, whether you play this version or the previous versions on the Game Boy. I had a blast playing this game, The plot twist about half way into the game is also quite unexpected. I'd say the real gripe I have with this game is the price: $69 AUD was the least expensive I found and for essentially an old game, that is way too much. The new Resident Evil 2 game at least justified the price by adding more content to the game, and providing a new over the shoulder take on the old game. Links Awakening is the exact same game, with basically nothing new added apart from the dungeon maker and quality of life elements. Still - especially if you have never played the game - it is still is so much fun, and I couldn't stop smiling as I played it.
