Honestly not a huge fan of the new direction with LoZ but I still thoroughly enjoyed the game. The cell shaded visuals are stunning and music is good. Story and the way it’s told is pretty weak. World was cool and it was fun to explore and discover stuff. I’m 50/50 on the shrines. A solid entry and a solid mix up to the formula.

There are people on here rating this extra high to make up for troll reviews. They aren't even troll reviews. They're legit. This is not trying to counter balance anything. 0/10 is my honest score. I love Nintendo and Zelda. Been playing both since 1986. If you like running around a vast empty space, very slowly, collecting items and doing some beyond basic, boring puzzles with poor graphics and worse music then this is the game for you, that is practically all you do, run around an empty space. If you want the great graphics, music, gameplay, atmosphere, emotion, puzzles, bosses and dungeons synonymous with Zelda then save your money.

This isn't Zelda branching out and trying new ideas, it is just destroying what was an exceptional gaming franchise. The new ideas were all s**t. ALL. It literally brought nothing good and turned something incredibly engaging and fun that I would skip meals to carry on playing, to something I could have switched off at any time, never played again in my life and not be remotely bothered if I never saw anything BotW related again ever.

Had this been a bit of a poor game I didn't get much enjoyment out of I would have given a 3/10 but this is a poor game I was annoyed at wasting 6 hours of my life on. Virtually nothing happened other than a few fetch quests and a very annoying stamina gauge. The Skyward Sword stamina got on my nerves sometimes but this was a whole other level of unneccessary annoyance.

The whole 6 hours I persevered with it was a frustration, the climbing, the empty world that everyone raves on about being so great to explore, the temporary weapons, the lack of music, the fetch quests, the worst voice acting imaginable, the terrible dungeons (if you can call them that). Just utter rubbish. If it wasn't Zelda no-one would have given it a 10, no one would have bought it and certainly not for £50. It is simply no fun to play. Worst Zelda I've played. Do yourself a favour and get a WiiU that you can play about 14 Zelda games on, including all of the best ones made and you can even play this junk on it too should you choose. Yes the loading times and animations on the WiiU will be just as bad as the Switch, so don't worry you'll still get time to make a brew between scenes. If you want to get a Switch for Zelda BotW don't bother. Get the WiiU and proper Zelda's. Switch is great but don't buy it if just for BotW.

Whilst on the topic of WiiU, Xenoblade Chronicles X on WiiU destroys BotW on anything. The world is so much better designed. If you are going to enjoy running round an open world doing quests then the Xenoblade X world is leagues ahead of this. It is huge and beautiful and alive and has good music too.

The game I bought the Switch for.

    Bad stuff:
    - this game feels like playing World of Warcraft in Legion without a guild. Essentially the same cycle of activities, but with dramatically worse music.
    - there's no story here at all. I've gotten so used to AAA games being sweeping, emotional narratives, with engaging characters, wading into this quiet sandbox was disorienting. I havent played a Zelda game since Ocarina of Time, so it might have been a misunderstanding on my part of what I was getting into, but this story is shallow to the point of tedium.
    - Almost everything is extremely easy - and then some random things are so absurdly difficult as to seem like you've started playing a different game. Not my favorite phenomena.
    - Just make the frigging horse magic. Just let me summon the horse wherever. I shouldnt have to buy a DLC to have basic transportation be fun and easy when the game covers such impossible distances. Everything about the horses is cool, except the sheer impossibility of using them with any regularity. In a game that wants me to treat my horse like a trusted companion, I ended up swapping them out like cars in GTA. Dreadful design.
    - Cooking is extremely endearing until it is agonizing. Terrible interface for something you have to do so much of, and while the noise they came up with for it is very good, there are limits - if a method of bulk cooking had been included, I suspect I never would have tired of the cooking music. Dreadful design.
    - No fishing pole. What on earth possessed them to not include a fishing pole?
    - The DLCs are just stuff they left out of the game. Nothing new, it's all stuff that genuinely should have been in the game, that already cost 70 dollars. Nasty business.

    Good stuff:
    - The puzzles, and the tools and interface for those puzzles, are magical. I never, ever wanted the shrines to end. Dazzling, imaginative work, Im only sad they werent more difficult, and more plentiful. Not worth 70 dollars, bc there simply isnt enough of them, but definitely the thing that best recommends the game.
    - the slate abilities, even outside the puzzles, are wonderfully good fun, and feel fresh and engaging long after everything else has faded.
    - It's a very pretty place to spend time.
    - Some really terrific set-pieces; the four big 'dungeons' felt great.
    - A quality of wonder and scale that is hard to overstate.

I think if I hadnt kept playing WoW after my core group of friends moved on, and thus suffered the resource grind cycle of that game for so many hours, this one wouldnt have bothered me so much. But I did. And some design choices feel, even now, however many hours through, completely inexplicable - made worse when they rectified a number of them, but wanted me to pay to get them. Terrible cost to joy ratio when considered against most big titles.

The gameplay is 100% limited to Roll and Hit, typical of generic and industrial Souls Likes games, which are facilitated for players limited to pressing two buttons. The difference here is that we have more colors.

The game copied several mechanics from other games like Ark Online, among others, but for an outdated platform that is the Switch, this can be innovative.

I'm amazed how Nintendo manages to sell the same game for 30 years with the same story (Spoiler: no story) every time. Who knows, maybe next time they'll be able to innovate and make Link not lose his memory again.

The four divine beasts are the only places in the game that resemble the classic dungeons, and aren't even good ones. The first two (Zoras' and Ritos') were annoyingly easy. I was kinda surprised because the shrines felt like very little bits of prepararion for the five big dungeons (beasts + the castle) but those also had pretty lazy designs. The two remaining were more interesting but also pretty lacking when compared to any previous 3D Zelda. But the worse part was the castle, which feels like an amusement park with a bunch of completely optional paths to get some cool gear but absolutely zero puzzles or challenges to reach the final boss.

But what really me off are the shrines. A bunch of them are almost running in a straight line to the goal and the combat ones just put an enemy in front of you and that's it. I'm also enormously surprised about the so spammed guardians. They only stand in front of you and shoot you a laser you can parry with any shield. That's it.

I'm really tired of "professional" reviews. Those reviewers have no guts. They just read the hype and unless the game is an absolute catastrophe or are strong leaks with bad news about a game, they just give the readers the news they want to hear.

BotW is a good game. It's fun, it gives a lot of hours of content, and it kind of brings Zelda to the physics era of gaming, which bloomed around 2004, when Half Life 2 really instrumentalized physics into the gameplay, both in combat and puzzles. But it's not the masterpiece the press says. If you haven't played it yet, temper your expectations and enjoy this good mix of the modern sandbox and Zelda.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is not an easy task to get an open-world game right on the first try, but Nintendo somehow did it.

What we got was the Kingdom of Hyrule, an area 60% bigger than Skyrim. The world is filled with landmarks and points of interests to explore with an insane ammount of detail. The freedom you have in this game is incredible. After finishing the great plateau, you can do *everything*. You could go to Kakariko and start the main quest, but you could also go to the final boss around 45 minutes into the game.

The story is dramatic, yet the game is very calm and quiet, with ambient music playing at just the right moments. Exploration is also combined with survival. Many people hate the durability of weapons or *rain at inconvenient times*, but I don't mind it.

What I do mind is the fact that there is no post-game since it is impossible to complete all the main quests. When you beat the game it brings you back to the title screen. When you return to your save file, you are back in Hyrule Castle. Why?

Shrines are generally very easy. They were rarely good and required little to no brain to complete. Same can be said for the „dungeons“.

Side quests have no depth and don't feel rewarding. I would like to have some side stories in side quests like Skyrim has.

    I give it 97%.

The feeling of being overwhelmed mixed with the feeling of pure curiosity when you look out from the peak outside of the Shrine of Resurrection on the Great Plateau is just incredible. This game has so much for you to do, and half of it, you don't even need to do. You can just run to the final boss as soon as you've left the Great Plateau if you want to, as speedrunners have proved by beating this in only 20 minutes. Or, you can take the completely opposite route, and beat every dungeon, find every Korok seed, do every shrine, find every treasure chest, and beat every side quest. Even then, you probably still haven't done all there is to do. The equipment in this game as well, oh my God. There is just so much to find and use. Later in the game, you open up your inventory and you see all of these beautifully designed, incredibly detailed weapons and shields, the thing I miss about this game the most, really. 10/10, one of the best experiences I've ever had. Honestly the game is more of a 8.5/10 for me, but unable to give that score on this system. I finished this game like two years ago, but wanted to write a quick review since im currently playing through TOTK and will write a review for that once i finished that game.

I'm going to list the negatives first, -Weapon breaking although it didn't bother me too much, it was annoying at first

I'm going to list the negatives first,
-Weapon breaking although it didn't bother me too much, it was annoying at first when you get a cool weapon and then it breaks.... i don't really understand why the bows break either. I think what they should of done for this game is make it where some weapons break easily, and then have a few more weapons that don't break at all. Because there's no reasons why the weapons break fast (totk provides reasons why at least in the story). Don't hate the overall mechanic, and it's more improved in TOTK
-Enemy variety- This in my opinion is the weakest part of the game, the boss fights are all the same type of enemy. there's very few different minion types.
Music- The music in the game is fine, it's just weaker compared to other games in the series.

    Positives
    - Combat is fun, fast, and fluid. Controls are responsive. So many different ways to approach fights
    - art direction/style is amazing, and I'm glad to say they carried that over to TOTK.
-lots of characters in the game that can provide some comic relief at times
-overall solid story, I like how you don't really know what's going on at first but slowly learn what exactly happened in the past, and what's going on currently. I love the final boss battles as it's very cinematic and symbolic.
-I like the puzzles in the game, most of the puzzles were fair and it's fun using your special abilities to solve most of them.
-The different environments are well designed.
-Several hours of gameplay easily provided

Overall, as an open world game it perfectly gives this vibe of "oh today I'm going to explore this part of hyrule," and spend like a good two hours doing that. It's an easy game to jump in and out of, and just have fun. I would set a goal of what I wanted to accomplish in my gaming session (usually about two-three hours at most), and then go have fun. It was fun just exploring the map. To those that complain about the game being open world, you do realize that a lot of zelda games are open world???, from wind waker, twilight princess, OOT, and many more focuses on the exploration. I can understand the complaints about wanting a more traditional game though like OOT, but idk if they are going to do that anymore. TOTK is more breath of the wild, and it's going to be years before a new zelda game since TOTK was just released a few months ago. What is clear is that these games sell very well, and I get why TOTK is very similar to this game. Maybe in the future games we'll get a different setting.

It's pretty simple though, if u like this game then you'll like TOTK.

BOTW is a wonderful experience, everything from the exploration to the combat is expertly crafted to create the best open world experience I've ever had. The story and voice acting is lackluster but it is skipable and I usually switch the language to french because it just makes it funny, the divine beasts are a bit boring but this may just be because I've one them so many times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This has by far been one of the greatest open world games I’ve ever laid my hands on. There is literally so much to do in this special world, that I simply don’t have a large enough character limit list them all. The attention to detail in this game is absurd. The climate gauge is a great example of this. Hiding in the shade or going up in altitude decreases the surrounding temperature, standing in direct sunlight increases it. The desert in this game acts exactly the same as in real life, days are hot and nights are cold. Another fantastic example would be the equipment. Metal shields, bows, and swords can conduct electricity and you can literally get struck by lightning in a thunderstorm. Wood shields, bows, swords, and basic arrows catch on fire when exposed to level 3 heat. Those fires can be extinguished when going into water.

This entire game is built around exploration, and it heavily encourages you to explore. Completing shrine puzzles can permanently increase your maximum health or stamina, scaling tall towers updates your map. Encountering groups of enemies and defeating them is rewarded with a chest. Finding Korok seeds can increase your equipment slots.

Exploration is also encourage via resource gathering. The cooking system is built around buying or gathering food, which allows you to create food that can buff your defense, attack power, or movement speed. It can temporarily increase your maximum stamina and hearts too, or you could make food that buffs resistances to heat, cold, and electricity, or even increase your stealth. If cooking isn’t your thing, you can create elixirs that essentially provide the same effects that cooking can. Mob drops aren’t useless in this game, as most of them are used in upgrading your clothing. Ancient materials can be used to upgrade runes. The puzzles in this game are sometimes simplistic at best, and mind intensive at worst. But all of them are fun and enjoyable. The best puzzles that really force you to think are found in the Divine Beasts, often requiring the Beast to be moved in certain ways to complete certain things. Locations in Breath of the Wild are vast and extremely different. Ranging from a hot volcano to the icy tundra. Each one of them requires different clothing or resistances to explore. You can only find certain resources in specific biomes, and this also applies to animals and monsters too! The boss fights were unique and varied, each requiring their own strategy. Now to the story. The beginning fills you with questions. Why did Link wake up in a cave? Why is ancient technology littering the landscape? You explore this world and piece by piece you begin the assemble the missing information like a puzzle. In the end game, you’ll completely understand what happened before you went into your 100 year slumber. This game literally turns you into Link. You must find your old memories and piece together who you once were. The silent protagonist really shines here, putting the player into their boots.

Breath of the Wild severely lacks that. heck, even Ocarina of Time, a game from 1998, has more stuff to do outside of the main game, with more interesting fetch quests in my opinion (and OOT isn't even my favorite Zelda game).

the controls aren't perfect, and they had to kind of grow on me. i absolutely hated them at first, but now i think they're fine. the weapon breaking mechanic, although criticized by many, is really interesting in my opinion, as it forces you to improvise and make the most out of the limited resources you get. same goes for cooking. and i don't mind the soundtrack (or mostly lack thereof), as it perfectly fits in with the atmosphere of the game

anyway, if the open world was more fleshed out, i think this game would be deserving of its 97 average score, and in my opinion, user reviews of this game severely lack nuance by overlooking the pros or cons of this game to give it a 0 or a 10, the latter being the most common. i'm kind of tired of seeing everyone praise this game like it has no flaws and call it "perfect" (and spoiler alert: making a perfect game is literally impossible)

This game is simply dreadful and encompasses all the things I hate about open world games, while adding a few other game mechanics that only make the game worse. The game started out okay but once I got out of the tutorial area things went downhill quickly. Any attempts to further progress the story was met with a swift end by any number of enemies that will one shot you and you will randomly encounter these enemies just trying to get from point A to point B. Getting more hearts and stamina in this game is a chore. You have to complete a trial which you have to find first just out in the wild with no real easy way to locate them. Then you have to complete 4 of them to get 1 more heart or a minimal increase to links stamina wheel. I lost my patience doing these trials really quickly. Link needs stamina to pretty much do anything running, swimming and climbing all consume stamina and Link has so very little of it that trying to get anywhere takes so long that I would just rather turn the game off. There is cooking in this game because of course. Cooking is also an activity that takes forever. You first have to find a cooking pot and ingredients again randomly out in the wild. You then have to navigate some menus before adding ingredients one at a time to links hands before tossing the ingredients in the cooking pot which the ingredients will dance around for a bit before you get the meal you cooked. The meal you cook typically gives you health or stamina and thats pretty much it. It all just wastes your time everything in this game is just a waste of your time. There is a weapon durability system that is awful makes me not even really want to fight anything. The only thing enemies drop are monster parts that can be used in cooking to make elixirs that give you buffs. No recovery hearts. No rupees. No anything that I play The Legend of Zelda games for. There are certain areas that you cant go to without appropriate clothing or food buffs because the areas are to hot or to cold. Just a very unfun game. I tried doing some sidequests but the only rewards I got were weapons and shields. Since these shatter like glass anytime I try to use them I just didnt bother anymore. Returned the game for a refund after playing for roughly 8 hours and the only reason I'm not giving the game a 0/10 is because the game works and the graphics are actually pretty nice. Everything else about Breath of the Wild is terrible.

If it would not have that much story then it would probably get a bit of a worse rating from me but the thing is that you very well have the chance too get through story, you just need to live through this game to get to know it. Basically it is a game were, in case you want to know the full story, they want you to just play the game first by exploring and then "earn the story" with it instead of just giving it the linear treatment. Of course you can also have shorter version of it by just going to the main villain as quickly as possible but that is not what should be done.
If a game is so great that I am happy everytime I get more stamina to cilmb even higher spots just because I can, then this is a very special game. What could be said about it that I think of as a bit negative? The music is not all that present all the time. That is a bit sad for a Zelda game. It still is there but especially for the great distances that you run or ride I would have loved to hear a theme. Bonus points for the dungeon re-interpretation theme though.

There were 3 reasons for buying Switch - BotW, Mario Odyssey and TotK. And now the 1st one is completed.
I play only major GOTY-type games. No Assassins creeds-like sandboxes and other trash they publish each and every year. Don’t have time for worst.
I enjoy powerful stories. That’s why I like GoW and The Last of Us diologies. Both parts of Red Dead Redemption, Disco Elysium, Control, Guardians of the Galaxy, It Takes Two and so on. So I had my expectations high, considering this game is the best one on Switch.
Yes, I’ve heard that story wise BotW is weak. Not that it’s weak - there’s just almost no story. Nothing interesting in both - the main story and side-quests. Graphics - I’ll be quick. It still has style, I’ve enjoyed it in handheld mode - never had an urge to play on TV. Had a glimpse once and never repeated that mistake - low res PS2 level textures and certain “squareness” is what you will get.
Gameplay. I’ll call Zelda game an open world puzzle game. That’s what it is. Temples - puzzles, main 4 objectives in the whole game - puzzles. Battles are primitive and I’ve tried to avoid them mostly. Bosses are easier than some above the average enemies. Interaction with the world and temples - physics based puzzles. Fire, gravity, magnetism etc. And, listen up, the main and most important game feature is that…you can climb everything. Yeah - that’s satisfying. And lots of travelling. Unfortunately, after RDR2 most of games’ worlds feel dead and empty. The same with BotW. Yeah, there were some animals here and there, I’ve met a few NPCs. Still world felt mostly as a huge dead territory. Beautiful, colourful and dead.
Conclusion. Do ability to climb everything (except in Temples) and lots of puzzles make Zelda one of the best games ever created? Certainly not. It was my impression that people, who still put this game on the pedestal, play mostly Nintendo games and/or missed all the major titles since 2017. However in 2017, I suppose, it was pretty above average. Right now the 60+ hours experience from BotW haven’t convinced me to play TotK and Mario Odyssey and just to sell the Switch. Maybe I could just check those later on Deck or…^^
