Without question the most overrated game in existence. There are far better games out there with considerably lower scores.

There are certain elements that made me drop this game: too much empty space and running around aimlessly, weapon breaking after swinging several times make me dislike this game's equipment progression (what is the point of getting the better sword if it breaks eventually and there is no way to fix it)

    Bad stuff:
    - this game feels like playing World of Warcraft in Legion without a guild. Essentially the same cycle of activities, but with dramatically worse music.
    - there's no story here at all. I've gotten so used to AAA games being sweeping, emotional narratives, with engaging characters, wading into this quiet sandbox was disorienting. I havent played a Zelda game since Ocarina of Time, so it might have been a misunderstanding on my part of what I was getting into, but this story is shallow to the point of tedium.
    - Almost everything is extremely easy - and then some random things are so absurdly difficult as to seem like you've started playing a different game. Not my favorite phenomena.
    - Just make the frigging horse magic. Just let me summon the horse wherever. I shouldnt have to buy a DLC to have basic transportation be fun and easy when the game covers such impossible distances. Everything about the horses is cool, except the sheer impossibility of using them with any regularity. In a game that wants me to treat my horse like a trusted companion, I ended up swapping them out like cars in GTA. Dreadful design.
    - Cooking is extremely endearing until it is agonizing. Terrible interface for something you have to do so much of, and while the noise they came up with for it is very good, there are limits - if a method of bulk cooking had been included, I suspect I never would have tired of the cooking music. Dreadful design.
    - No fishing pole. What on earth possessed them to not include a fishing pole?
    - The DLCs are just stuff they left out of the game. Nothing new, it's all stuff that genuinely should have been in the game, that already cost 70 dollars. Nasty business.

    Good stuff:
    - The puzzles, and the tools and interface for those puzzles, are magical. I never, ever wanted the shrines to end. Dazzling, imaginative work, Im only sad they werent more difficult, and more plentiful. Not worth 70 dollars, bc there simply isnt enough of them, but definitely the thing that best recommends the game.
    - the slate abilities, even outside the puzzles, are wonderfully good fun, and feel fresh and engaging long after everything else has faded.
    - It's a very pretty place to spend time.
    - Some really terrific set-pieces; the four big 'dungeons' felt great.
    - A quality of wonder and scale that is hard to overstate.

I think if I hadnt kept playing WoW after my core group of friends moved on, and thus suffered the resource grind cycle of that game for so many hours, this one wouldnt have bothered me so much. But I did. And some design choices feel, even now, however many hours through, completely inexplicable - made worse when they rectified a number of them, but wanted me to pay to get them. Terrible cost to joy ratio when considered against most big titles.

It took me 6 years to finally play BOTW, because I didn't love the console catalog and was really worried about some criticism I heard about the game. I enjoyed the game, but most of that criticism isn't only right but also pretty bland.

The four divine beasts are the only places in the game that resemble the classic dungeons, and aren't even good ones. The first two (Zoras' and Ritos') were annoyingly easy. I was kinda surprised because the shrines felt like very little bits of prepararion for the five big dungeons (beasts + the castle) but those also had pretty lazy designs. The two remaining were more interesting but also pretty lacking when compared to any previous 3D Zelda. But the worse part was the castle, which feels like an amusement park with a bunch of completely optional paths to get some cool gear but absolutely zero puzzles or challenges to reach the final boss.

But what really me off are the shrines. A bunch of them are almost running in a straight line to the goal and the combat ones just put an enemy in front of you and that's it. I'm also enormously surprised about the so spammed guardians. They only stand in front of you and shoot you a laser you can parry with any shield. That's it.

I'm really tired of "professional" reviews. Those reviewers have no guts. They just read the hype and unless the game is an absolute catastrophe or are strong leaks with bad news about a game, they just give the readers the news they want to hear.

BotW is a good game. It's fun, it gives a lot of hours of content, and it kind of brings Zelda to the physics era of gaming, which bloomed around 2004, when Half Life 2 really instrumentalized physics into the gameplay, both in combat and puzzles. But it's not the masterpiece the press says. If you haven't played it yet, temper your expectations and enjoy this good mix of the modern sandbox and Zelda.

Breath of the Wild severely lacks that. heck, even Ocarina of Time, a game from 1998, has more stuff to do outside of the main game, with more interesting fetch quests in my opinion (and OOT isn't even my favorite Zelda game).

the controls aren't perfect, and they had to kind of grow on me. i absolutely hated them at first, but now i think they're fine. the weapon breaking mechanic, although criticized by many, is really interesting in my opinion, as it forces you to improvise and make the most out of the limited resources you get. same goes for cooking. and i don't mind the soundtrack (or mostly lack thereof), as it perfectly fits in with the atmosphere of the game

anyway, if the open world was more fleshed out, i think this game would be deserving of its 97 average score, and in my opinion, user reviews of this game severely lack nuance by overlooking the pros or cons of this game to give it a 0 or a 10, the latter being the most common. i'm kind of tired of seeing everyone praise this game like it has no flaws and call it "perfect" (and spoiler alert: making a perfect game is literally impossible)

There were 3 reasons for buying Switch - BotW, Mario Odyssey and TotK. And now the 1st one is completed.
I play only major GOTY-type games. No Assassins creeds-like sandboxes and other trash they publish each and every year. Don’t have time for worst.
I enjoy powerful stories. That’s why I like GoW and The Last of Us diologies. Both parts of Red Dead Redemption, Disco Elysium, Control, Guardians of the Galaxy, It Takes Two and so on. So I had my expectations high, considering this game is the best one on Switch.
Yes, I’ve heard that story wise BotW is weak. Not that it’s weak - there’s just almost no story. Nothing interesting in both - the main story and side-quests. Graphics - I’ll be quick. It still has style, I’ve enjoyed it in handheld mode - never had an urge to play on TV. Had a glimpse once and never repeated that mistake - low res PS2 level textures and certain “squareness” is what you will get.
Gameplay. I’ll call Zelda game an open world puzzle game. That’s what it is. Temples - puzzles, main 4 objectives in the whole game - puzzles. Battles are primitive and I’ve tried to avoid them mostly. Bosses are easier than some above the average enemies. Interaction with the world and temples - physics based puzzles. Fire, gravity, magnetism etc. And, listen up, the main and most important game feature is that…you can climb everything. Yeah - that’s satisfying. And lots of travelling. Unfortunately, after RDR2 most of games’ worlds feel dead and empty. The same with BotW. Yeah, there were some animals here and there, I’ve met a few NPCs. Still world felt mostly as a huge dead territory. Beautiful, colourful and dead.
Conclusion. Do ability to climb everything (except in Temples) and lots of puzzles make Zelda one of the best games ever created? Certainly not. It was my impression that people, who still put this game on the pedestal, play mostly Nintendo games and/or missed all the major titles since 2017. However in 2017, I suppose, it was pretty above average. Right now the 60+ hours experience from BotW haven’t convinced me to play TotK and Mario Odyssey and just to sell the Switch. Maybe I could just check those later on Deck or…^^

Too bad. I would not recommend such a game to anyone in their right mind, unless they have 1000 hours in their life with nothing better to fill it with, and there are plenty of games that do their thing in 10 hours and provide more enjoyment without the endless waste of time

The story is for kids, that's everything that I'm going to say, I gave it a 6.5/10 just because of the world-building, but without that is a 5/10 story if you have over 12 years old, and think that this is a good story you are a very odd individual, plus every side quest I did in the game was super lame. Cinematics and acting in general is very cringe, lip sync is absent btw. Loved the art style, animations, and everything sound related. Good game overall.

You are beset by mobs and then skeletons spawn from the ground to make it worst, you are then backed into a corner as the camera is pushed, dark-souls-like, into the back of link's head as he auto attaches to the wall, leaving you wondering why you can't do anything as an enemy kills you in one strike. The starting stamina is atrocious and is too slow to come back. Link doesn't simply move to where you want him to, but he does a little semi-circle circuitous move that punts you off of cliffs and makes it impossible to get onto ladders. All of this stuff came from skyward sword - the worst Zelda game.

I used to think that they could improve all of this for the next Zelda game. I now know different. Screw you, Nintendo!

I rarely play video games anymore because I’m an adult and I don’t have so much time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mostly good way to spend idle hours. Annoying how some enemies could take you down to one heart, no matter how many hearts you have. Wished that reclaiming the towers meant that that territory was now free of enemies. It would make Link's role as hero have more meaning. Wished Link built up an army as he moved through territories, so he wasn't always fighting alone. Too many shrines. Guardians and Lynels too hard to kill. Rain was super annoying and lasted too long. Really enjoyed Beedle, most of the castle, and the five animal challenges. Link's hearts should automatically refill when he swims in a fairy's waters or visits a goddess statue (regardless if he has the spirit orbs). Why only monks? Why not nuns, too? And why don't these spirits teach Link more? And that ending? Why doesn't Link get to see Hyrule free? He should get to visit the villages and celebrate his world, along with Zelda. Expand
