Hardcore platformer fans will love the challenges that The King's Bird presents while less skilled gamers can still appreciate the gorgeous game world via the incredibly helpful Assist Mode. Talk about going above and beyond!

As with N++, Super Meat Boy and other games alike, The King's Bird focuses on control and gameplay over story. Gain "momentum" and use it to glide and rush through the levels it's the key to complete the game and conquer the online rankings. It's a challenging experience, if you're the kind of player that loves speed-running gaming.

This review is directed at the nintendo switch version.

The game crashes nearly at the end of the game. For what I look, this crash is constant for all people who bought the game on switch. It has been reported since 2019 and no fix yet (2022). You just can't finish the game.
I tried to reach the developers through discord and e-mail, but got no response.
If you have a switch, don't lose your time. If you want to try the game, buy it on another platform.

Beautiful art, gorgeous music, and good controls. It's a nice touch that the player-character sings along to the background music while gliding.

Issues mentioned by other reviews (bugs, finicky controls) I cannot reproduce. *edit* Or at least until I played through several chapters. Later, I came to a point where trying to enter the next level causes a crash of the game, making progress impossible. Currently hoping for a reply on reddit, then I'll try the devs.

It is occasionally frustrating when getting stuck between two checkpoints, at which point it really helps, that the Switch lends itself to short sessions, that can be paused indefinitely at any time. With the PC-version I probably would have tried to play in longer sessions, would have gotten frustrated, and given up on the game.

When really stuck, or if you want parkour without (with less) dying, the "Assist Mode" allows significantly lowering difficulty: Continuing the level at the farthest checkpoint (not relevant on the Switch?), lowering the speed of the game, longer gliding, invulnerability to the thorns in the levels or multiple hits before dying from them are some of the options.

At least on the Switch I didn't notice any bugs or issues with the controls as reported by user krzysiu99 one year ago. Same for some of the professional reviews. Among the parkour-style games I've played, this game feels more on the easier side, with instant respawn and mostly consistently short distances between checkpoints. Maybe the game has been patched?
