Firstly, The game is right now unplayable. Error after error, bug after bug. This is how it goes.

Secondly, game in it's core resembles Celeste but with poor controls. Intresting idea excecuted poorly.

An enjoyable side scrolling parkour game. Beautiful art, gorgeous music, and good controls. It's a nice touch that the player-character sings along to the background music while gliding.

Issues mentioned by other reviews (bugs, finicky controls) I cannot reproduce. *edit* Or at least until I played through several chapters. Later, I came to a point where trying to enter the next level

Issues mentioned by other reviews (bugs, finicky controls) I cannot reproduce. *edit* Or at least until I played through several chapters. Later, I came to a point where trying to enter the next level causes a crash of the game, making progress impossible. Currently hoping for a reply on reddit, then I'll try the devs.

It is occasionally frustrating when getting stuck between two checkpoints, at which point it really helps, that the Switch lends itself to short sessions, that can be paused indefinitely at any time. With the PC-version I probably would have tried to play in longer sessions, would have gotten frustrated, and given up on the game.

When really stuck, or if you want parkour without (with less) dying, the "Assist Mode" allows significantly lowering difficulty: Continuing the level at the farthest checkpoint (not relevant on the Switch?), lowering the speed of the game, longer gliding, invulnerability to the thorns in the levels or multiple hits before dying from them are some of the options.

At least on the Switch I didn't notice any bugs or issues with the controls as reported by user krzysiu99 one year ago. Same for some of the professional reviews. Among the parkour-style games I've played, this game feels more on the easier side, with instant respawn and mostly consistently short distances between checkpoints. Maybe the game has been patched?

This review is directed at the nintendo switch version.

The game crashes nearly at the end of the game. For what I look, this crash is constant for all people who bought the game on switch. It has been reported since 2019 and no fix yet (2022). You just can't finish the game. I tried to reach the developers through discord and e-mail, but got no response. If you have a switch, don't

If you have a switch, don't lose your time. If you want to try the game, buy it on another platform.

It takes long to master but the rewards will be nothing short of marvelous, as magnificent worlds will open up before the players who invest their time and effort into this piece, if the repetitiveness of some moments does not put them off.

It’s in the gameplay, though, that The King’s Bird proves to be flawed. This is a precision platformer where, ironically, you don’t have precise control. Instead, you must use momentum to dip and arc between platforms. What seems initially innovative ultimately frustrates, as you find yourself fighting the controls to build necessary speed. As gorgeous as it is to look at, a simple jump would’ve been preferable to experience this world.

The King’s Bird has the potential to be wonderful—and in its art and music, it is. Based on that alone I would play it all day. But the sense of freedom it is trying so hard to evoke is held back by its finicky controls, and since the game’s very foundation is meant to be freeing, it falls short. Altered controls and a slightly wider margin for error, especially on console, would really let The King’s Bird soar beyond the confines of its cage, and boost its mechanics up to the high tier of its design.
