Bandit Liang and his companion get a job from a human trafficker. Liang needs to escort 4 girls from Huazhou city to Luoyang city. They have to pass through Huazhou, Wenxiang, Shanzhou, and reach the final destination Luoyang.

At first, Liang thought the girls he escorted would be sold to the rich as adopted daughters to start a new life. However, a girl called "Sui" tells the "truth" of this journey to Liang.

The rich is actually a swine demon that has practiced for thousands of years. The swine demon enjoys eating girls. Every year on his birthday, he would send human traffickers to abduct girls from Shaanxi to celebrate. Sui's sister was killed by this demon.

Sui hopes Liang can stop the escort and join with her to assassinate the swine demon, to get revenge for her sister and girls who have lost their lives in the past few years, but Liang does not completely believe Sui since there are many mysteries buried in Sui. Liang will gather information during this travel, investigate the truth behind this escort and make his decisions.

The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty is a fascinating, challenging, and compelling story that uses its form as a visual novel to tell a story about normal, flawed, and vulnerable people. These people are dealt horrible hands outside of their control, and through a historical lens, we as the audience are shown choices that believably could have been made in real life during the depicted period. It can be ugly, but it can also be full of life, with tragedy and violence punctuated by characters bonding over shadow puppets or a meal. There’s a darkness to this story that could justifiably turn people away, but I never got a sense of titillation or glee on the creative side, but rather an interest in showing the reader a difficult piece of human history. The prose can be a bit dry at times on top of that, but otherwise in a space that’s full of anime-style fantasy and action, it was refreshing to find something more grounded in reality.

The Hungry Lamb is not a long visual novel, and I was able to finish it in close to 10 hours. The game has some issues, but it’s still a satisfying read worth experiencing. If you aren’t sensitive to the subject matter, you will be greeted with a compelling narrative about survival and redemption. The art is a treat, even if I wish there were more. It’s not perfect; the story has some serious pacing issues, and it made me take a couple of breaks. With all that, I’m glad I finished The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty and can still recommend it, faults and all.
