The Church in the Darkness takes the unsettling approach of realism. It’s convincing as a story of a 1970s cult, and Freedom Town is a chilling look inside an isolated cult in the middle of the jungles of South America.

In sum, The Church in the Darkness is a highly replayable game with shifting gameplay goals for each playthrough. The dynamic narrative that changes the motives of the cult leaders leads encourages players to give it another go, make new choices and achieve new endings. You’ll have to endure its technical mishaps, but if you get past those, you’ll have fun investigating the diverse versions of this mysterious cult.

The Church in the Darkness has much more value as an idea and as a story creation tool than it has as a game.

The Church in the Darkness is marred by several technical shortcomings that draw players out of the experience and kill the pacing.

It’s focus on stealth and a cult living in the jungle on the 70’s (based loosely on the tragic events of Jonestown). Some mechanics could be better: 1. there’s is no “mano a mano” combat, you can only subdue the guards from the back or with darts. This takes out the chance of survival by 50%.
    2. There’s too many closets and too little items on them: the most useful and important items are very scarce. Mostly you find nothing useful, literally!!
    3. The disguise is useful but at certain extent. You can get shot to death with or without it.
    4. In order to see the guard’s line of sight you have to keep pressing the control button constantly, even on easy mode… very cheap difficulty . Why not leave it permanently on??
If you don’t like strategy and/or stealth don’t play it. If you’re patient and like stealth then play it. It’s not bad at all. Just be aware that if you’re discovered you’ll get shot immediately by the guards. Play on easy mode and keep pushing those buttons.
