While Tandem: A Tale of Shadows does feel like it runs out of a bit of steam by the end, overall this is still a fairly entertaining little puzzle adventure. There are plenty of places for improvement, and both the story and the gameplay really could have used a bit more refinement if this was to become something truly special. But even if it is a little rough around the edges, the biggest impression the game is going to leave behind is just how clever its puzzles are. It is the core gameplay that saves the game, even if the stuff around it might not be all that impressive. Even when the game starts to drag and become a bit more predictable, the puzzle platforming is fun enough to warrant seeing everything through until the end.

The music rounds off the positive impression of the game well. Those who would like to experience a new adventure should join Emma and Fenton. Expand

Fortunately,There’s no doubt that, especially at this time of year, the darker and more funky art style of Tandem is able to catch the eye. Fortunately, beneath that look is at least a pretty decent puzzle game which will have you transitioning between the young girl Emma, who will generally be moving around freely, and either trying to block or cast light to create shadows, which then when you switch to Fenton the teddy bear you’ll be able to use as platforms to move around. Between the two you’ll need to work out increasingly complex puzzles, sometimes requiring some trial and error but typically just asking you to take a moment to think about the elements in front of you to devise your plan of attack. One complaint is that the camera isn’t always helpful, and on occasion feels like it’s actively trying to make it tougher to see simple cues in the environment like somewhat hidden passages you’ll need to enter to solve the room’s puzzles. Throw in that while the game’s visual style is pretty unique the nature of the puzzles themselves can feel a bit on the generic side and depending on your level of puzzle game exposure you may find it all a bit on the familiar side.

Somehow Emma knows the name of the mute bear and what they have to do before they even get to the mansion. Ruin the immersion by being stupid or lazy. Stripped of the graphics this game is a turkey.
