Locals witnessed the horrors of World War 2 only to face the chaotic and violent events that came after. You arrive to decide what to do with the local school. But shortly, the mundane trip reveals that the scars of the past still run deep in the village.

How did the forced expulsions and the communist coup d'état affect the village? Can the horrors of war justify the violence after its end?

Your grandpa was somehow in the center of all this, but the details are missing. What happened? If you tread carefully, you might learn the truth and uncover the past that still haunts the present.

    Svoboda 1945: Liberation is a follow-up to the award-winning Attentat 1942.

Svoboda 1945: Liberation defines why some stories should be told in the medium of games. This multimedia experience is filled with impactful emotions and hard truths that are long overdue in lesser known war stories. Although its short lived as far as games go, the lessons you learn are so unique that Charles Games has set a precedent in storytelling.

Svoboda 1945: Liberation unabashedly airs its country’s scars and sins alike to sincerely ask players the ultimate question: is all history worth preserving? Whichever you decide, you’ll be left feeling like you’ve neglected an open wound still festering, either to stand painfully in perpetuity or to serve as an all but forgotten foundation.

Svoboda is a unique crossover between a video game and a docu-film. It manages to do both things in an interesting way and opens up the door on some events in history that we should never forget.

Svoboda 1945: Liberation is an excellent learning tool, but unfortunately isn't a very good game. That doesn't mean you should skip experiencing it, as the way it tells Czech history through small 'minigames' is excellent, as is its beautiful black and white animations. As a collection of key historical World War 2 moments in the Czech Republic's history, it's a triumph - but if you're looking for meaningful character exploration and a fulfilling main story, then you'll be disappointed. Still, I recommend Svoboda 1945: Liberation to anybody with an interest in history who wants a better way to learn outside of stuffy classrooms and textbooks.
