It was as if I stepped into a portal to my childhood. I highly recommend the "single joy-con in each hand" motion control scheme. The motions controls feel so intuitive and really enhance the gameplay. Cappy serves as a great sidekick, with his boomerang and capture abilities providing a refreshing take on the classic 3D Mario Mechanics. Visually, it is a gorgeous game. It maintains 60 fps consistently in both mobile and docked. There seems to be a variety of different environments in this game, unlike Super Mario Galaxy and Sunshine. While those games followed a common theme, Odyssey takes influence from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World in that there is a (Spoilers) desert world, ghost world. tropical world, metro world, etc. The music is phenomenal. I recommend that everyone use a headset to truly appreciate it. I had chills running down my spine once I heard the theme from the Switch Presentation Trailer for Odyssey. No other franchise has made as big of an impact on the gaming industry as Mario. He is the Micky Mouse of gaming. This game can be enjoyed by anyone. Enthusiast gamers. Father/Mother playing with his or her kids. Teenagers. Anyone. I had lost faith in Nintendo during the Wii U generation. They have absolutely blown me away with putting out masterpieces such as Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. These 2 games make the Switchh worth it. I must also add that this year has been incredible for gaming. Besides Mario and Zelda, we had Persona 5, Cuphead, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier, Nioh, Divinity. Instead of debating Game of the Years. We should declare 2017 as the Year of the Games. I hope everyone enjoys these games as much as I have. Expand

The controls in this game are great! They add a lot of ability's even without the new hat cappy. Cappy also allows for some cool sequence breaks. So Physics are perfect. They add a lot of ability's even without the new hat cappy. Cappy also allows for some cool sequence breaks. So Physics are perfect. The capture ability also works like how you would expect it to. Except for one. When taking control of a bullet bill, I can't do a full 180 by holding one direction because the game expects you to change your direction on the control stick to keep on changing in the same direction you were already turning. So thats annoying. Now, I have to admit, the Death System here fixed previous issues but made a new one too. When you die you only lose 10 coins, and when you die without coins, you just come back normally. No negatives. But sometimes you die and spawn waaaaaaaaay far back away from where you died and you have to do a bit of backtracking. So that's also annoying. The bosses are also overused and when you fight them the next time they don't really add anything important. Oh yeah, and it has some nice easter eggs too. Spoiler alerts are stupid, this game can't be spoiled. When you beat the game, you can unlock peach's castle and you will find the courtyard from Mario 64 in a secret door that can only be opened by becoming SM64 Mario! Love that. I just can't give this game a 10 because of some annoyances that turn me off a little bit. For example, while going through the desert, there is too much space for its own good because you can't really do anything besides move while you go to the next spot. It's a little too big for its own good. There is also an annoying boss rush mode where when you die, you spawn back and I can see on the ship that the bosses I had defeated were not there but then I had to re fight all the other bosses that I had killed. Very annoying. Now then, the graphics... Beatiful in docked, sometimes a little blurry in portable mode. Docked always looks amazing no matter what. In portable mode, sometimes the game gets a little bit TOO blurry, and then the resolution jumps up then down and up and down. Also, shadow edges look like crap. Now then, the performance... Beautiful in both portable and docked. The game uses dynamic resolution to maintain 60fps almost all the times. The only time I noticed it drop was for a few seconds in new donk city. It also makes the Switch REALLY hot and with it close to me, I could hear the fan going LOUD. The things you do for moons is also somewhat overused. There are multiple places throughout the game that make you put down your hat and do some platforming without your hat. This was fine the first few times, but after maybe the 4th time, I felt it wasn't needed. BUT, the best part is... It's optional! Go find another moon or something, do what you want. Yeah, this game is pretty amazing. Expand

its pretty good. A bit easy. a bit of a grind. But extremely fun. worth every buck for your muck for switch owners. Does it justify a switch purchase? It really depends on how much you like platformers or value a games difficulty. I personally don't mind too much. But that is just me.

Don't bother with the user score, mostly 10 or 0's by fanboys and haters. But you can't deny what this game is, for the industry of the videogames: Showing thart with a lot of care and listening to the fans, a concept like sand-box, plataforming-colectathon can work, be fun, interesting and a fun experience.

It feels like you have been thrown back in time and taking your first steps in Super Mario 64. Okay...it could be possible that there is a little bit of nostalgia that pushes this game from a 9 to a 10. Because it really has its little weak points.
For example the controls are sometimes mildly imprecise and circuitous when capturing a bullet.
You have to turn the camera before controlling the bullet without problems.
But this is some little detail that is forgotten as soon as you jump around the next corner and throw Cappy to fight the next enemies. Long story short: I'm already in love with this game and looking forward to some awesome hours of gameplay.

An awful camera, forced motion controls, some sudden loss in graphical quality, miniscule worlds, very low difficulty and a gameplay gimmick that wears thin far too quickly are just the tip of the iceberg. Perhaps the most tragic error though is how nannying the experience is.

Collecting a Shine Sprite, or Power Star in previous titles felt highly rewarding because it signifies the end of a challenging gauntlet of platforming variety. In Odyssey, Moons are absolutely everywhere, and unlike, for example, the Shrines in Breath of the Wild, there are simply too many Moons with little gaps between them. Positive reinforcement is one thing, but forcing it every few seconds is a trick that the average player will quickly see through.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 can rest easy - SMO in no way betters upon its prequels and should be avoided unless you are a die-hard fan of the series, and can look past the many flaws

The Story needs to change, add new villains (Sort of like SEGA does with Sonic Games) change the story a bit. The Only new mechanic in this game is the hat sidekick sort of like FLUDD from Super Mario. Sunshine but with different mechanics (Again same thing again). The Hat can control other enemies, including Bowser which is pretty neat. Aaaannnddd that's about it. Not much more which is pretty sad. But the visuals are impressive, the game looks really good and colorful like Mario Galaxy and Sonic Colors. Ok I say all that so you know I know my mario and feel SAD to give this one such a low score, which I´m feeling actually generous because this game was the epitome of BOREDOM, levels practically have no platforming or reason to be all the game is just hunting those moons which more than half are a chore to get without any real skill, is like if in zelda breath of the wild, all you did in the damn game was getting the korok seeds, yes, is that boring, I can´t believe people gave this game 9s and 10s is really mediocre, the 6 points I give are just for the visuals, music and all the neat little ideas that weren´t really exploided well, otherwise I would give it a 10 like MOST Marios out there, really dissappointed of this. Super Mario Odyssey will most likely be remembered and ranked among the greatest and best games in the lauded series, alongside legendary titles like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 64. If you've ever played and enjoyed a Super Mario game, you will love SMO. There is no better 3D platforming experience anywhere.

You sort of have to make your own challenge with speedruns or the annoying multiplayer game.

Anyway I think this game is mediocre at best and is a reflection of Nintendo's declining game design.

Another thing I don't like however is how many power moons feels shoehorned into this game. In Mario 64, there was always a puzzle or platforming challenge needed to obtain the star and 100% it. In this one, most of them feel like filler to stretch the game out longer than it actually is.

Other than the cons, this game does put a smile on anyone's face especially when you reach New Donk City which is my favorite part of the game. There are still lots of things to have fun in this one. If you own a switch and haven't played it then get on it!

Mario is joined this time on his adventure by Cappy, a sentient hat-being that lives on Mario’s head. He can throw Cappy like a boomerang to retrieve coins, or use Cappy as a platform to jump higher and further than ever before. Plus, a second player can join in the fun by controlling Mario’s hat similar to the Lumas in Super Mario Galaxy. In single player mode, Cappy feels like F.L.U.D.D. from Super Mario Sunshine with an upgraded personality. This becomes apparent when trying to defeat levels without your trusty companion as playing without cappy can feel like a handicap.

The level design in Super Mario Odyssey is incredible and the music provides plenty of goosebumps with a sense of nostalgia. I nearly had tears in my eyes listening to a certain song in New Donk City. The game feels somewhat easy and on the short side, but there are enough power moons and costumes to collect that provide just the right amount of content for a completionist. All in all, Super Mario Odyssey was the game I wanted so I can say with full confidence that Nintendo delivered. Final verdict: 9/10.

The best Mario game since Super Mario 64. The gameplay builds on its predecessors and adds new and exciting feature like Cappy and the ability to become enemy characters. The using the joy-cons to control Mario takes a bit of a curb but is much more entertaining than using a regular controller. The music is the best of the series, with a lot of songs that just put a smile on your face.

However Nintendo did an amazing job getting back on track with their brand new sidekick: Cappy! Cappy was able to be used in a variety of different ways such as platforming and capturing enemies. Second, the BEAUTIFUL Soundtrack. While it doesn't surpass Super Mario Galaxy's Soundtrack (in my opinion) the Soundtrack is stellar, my favorites are Jump Up Superstar and Cascade Kingdom. It has the best movement/controls in the series, and it's actually insane what you can do with just Mario. There are some areas that take advantage of this, however, the game largely focuses on the new capture mechanic and exploration rather than Mario's movement and platforming. Most people have found this to be a positive change, but a lot of the captures are very simplistic in their design and often designated to a specific area. They are intended as solutions to the game's mostly easy platform challenges, and trying to beat these without the use of captures is way more fun for me, than playing the game the way it was intended.

Because it's more of a sandbox-like Mario like 64 and Sunshine, you are mostly searching larger hub-worlds for moons, the game's main collectible. Most of these areas are pretty flat and empty in their biggest areas, the biggest offender easily being the sand kingdom. There's 999 of them, and it's very easy to stumble upon one randomly. In the base-game, there's significantly fever available, but it's still fairly easy to meet the required amount for story-progression. Many moons are found in the bit scarce platforming challenges and side-rooms, but even more can be obtained through methods such as buying them from a shop, ground pounding boxes or are simply in plain sight. This is a problem because it becomes the bulk of the games content. If you just want to progress in the main game, it becomes really short, because the main objective never takes that long to beat, and the moons that are fun and challenging to get are easily missed, because players are likelier to find and grab many of the game's insanely easy moons. Especially since many of the easier methods of obtaining moons repeat themselves throughout the kingdoms. This is why it fails were 64 and Sunshine succeed, because in those games, the levels would vary in how you progress through them and obtain each individual collectible. Odyssey rarely does this, and when it does it's usually only for a boss.

The best parts of this game for me were the later sections of Bowser's kingdom and the Moon kingdoms, because while they were more linear, they provided are more consistent and rewarding sense of progression. That and Metro, in which way more moons felt unique and fun too obtain, and the main area was way more fun to move around in due to it's more vertical layout.

I understand that not everybody is going to share this opinion, since a lot of people like exploring every corner of the map. But i personally have a lot more more fun tackling a more constant barrage of obstacles that the level-based 3d Mario games like Galaxy or 3d World provide. Still, Odyssey is good game at it's core, with amazing presentation and charm. You can get a lot of fun out of this game, but for me, that fun is short-lived and mostly derives from things the game doesn't intend for me to do.

This is for me one of the weaker 3D Mario games when compared to the challenge and level design presented by Mario galaxy or even Mario 64, which this game claims to be a successor to, yet for the most part fails to understand adding value to tasks in order to get a moon, making them feel more Korok seed than power star. I was also baffled by how you’re forced to visit each kingdom in a mostly linear order despite the game claiming to be more open-ended, while also lacking any real hub world like peaches castle from 64. Instead the actual areas you visit feel like hub worlds where you search for secrets, moons and challenge rooms rather than feeling like actual platform challenges in of themselves. While I appreciate the more open feel of the levels they just feel far too easy with no real consequence for death other than losing coins which are easily replaced. The mechanics like capturing are interesting but never feel fully taken advantage of to create the ingenious level design last seen in the Mario galaxy series. And don’t get me started on the amount of lazily copy and pasted content throughout the game. There were far too many instances where I had to ground pound a spot to get a moon or buy one from the store which count as actual missions by the way. While you can always skip these ones if you want, I ended up finding that very few of the moons actually felt rewarding to get, making a lot of the game feel like unnecessary filler.

However, I also realise this game does better in some areas than any Mario game ever. Mario has never felt so good to control and often makes me want to pick up and play the game just because of how satisfying his move set is to pull off. Therefore, this is the best looking and running game in the series with the best controls, move set and camera, though I don’t like how the wall jump has been nerfed and made almost useless. I absolutely would like to see Mario maintain this broad move set for his next 3D outing, be it with a better wall jump. I just wish the game took advantage of his move set more in the level design as many areas feel like walking simulators rather than challenges that actually utilised this move set in clever and interesting ways. Overall an amazing sandbox with extremely tight controls but a disappointing platformer that lacks challenge with many ideas not quite reaching their full potential, making Super Mario Odyssey feel more like a tutorial for breath of the wild. I enjoyed the game a lot and would recommend to any switch owner looking for a relaxing sandbox game, even if it can’t deliver on my desire for a grander platforming challenge. While I don’t think this game is the sequel to 64 or as groundbreaking as many suggest it is, I still believe it’s worth picking up and playing.

And that will make you bored of the melody quite faster, which is kinda sad.

-Litterally a third of all the power moons (so around 300) feels like they are just there to fill the game. A lot of them are just impossible to find if you don't go search on the internet. So yeah, it rewards you for exploring, but also punish you for exploring 1h a damn power moon and not finding it because it's ridiculously hidden without any clues.

I also think the story could have been thrown out at that point since it's totally useless. I would have prefer a simple ''find everything to repair X thing'' because the marriage thing is lame ( and so outdated, come on Nintendo).

Mario Odyssey is a good game. It has some good songs and some amazing areas, but the main game seems somewhat too easy, this does make sense as it is a game meant for children. The gameplay is fun with Cappy being used to pull off jumps that are impossible without him. Overall, Mario Odyssey is an amazing game that anyone with a Nintendo Switch should play.

Um jogo muito bom, divertido, criativo, possui uma ótima mecânica relacionada ao chapéu dele, trilha sonora ótima. Em geral uma ótima experiência característica da Nintendo.

8/10 - Muito bom, varias horas de diversão!

This game is the best 3D platform we I’ve ever played I’m currently 100%ing it and the level design is great looking and the graphics look good

A bit easy and grindy. Uninspired and empty in comparison with the Galaxy games. A bit of a dissapointment. Mario controls ace, as expected, and the hat/capture mechanics were interesting but that’s about it for me. A pitty.

A fine game but I must admit that all the 10/10s sometimes leave me wondering if I’m wrong when it comes to Mario games. Very fun but not a “perfect score” kinda game for me.

The controls are almost perfect, the levels are amazing, and there is so much creativity. All of this combined makes Mario odyssey the best Mario experience since Galaxy.

This game definitely isn't a Masterpiece, it isn't even better than 64, actually it barely manages to be better than Sunshine, why? Let me explain: for starters, the game presents itself as a spiritual succesor to 64 and Sunshine but it actually resembles more the Galaxy games (in a bad way), because it's main mission moons function almost always the same as a mission in Galaxy (and even the level design is basic at the level of a world in that game but lacking its difficulty) + you can grab some other moons on the way (that resemble the blue coins from Sunshine A LOT), and guess what, you get moons here for everything, a moon that is just floating in a random place that's incredibly easy to reach is worth the same as a main mission moon or a challenge moon (and even those aren't really challenging), and that just makes getting them rather a hassle than a satisfactory reward, so, if you go completely straight forward and ignore all these moons that aren't really worth your time, the game would be one of the shortest of all, to the point that it's got some of the shortest worlds out of all 3D Mario games (also most of it's worlds actually resemble a level from galaxy more than a world from 64, since almost all are just a series of platforms and/or get from point A to point B). But if instead you decide for some reason to 100% complete it, then you're in for an unsatisfactory LONG game with tons of trash moons and wasted potential, because odyssey actually succeeds in some things like:
-Movement, Mario's moveset in this game is by far the best ever seen, but that's just even more frustrating because the game never elaborates on this or gives you more than 2/3 challenges that actually take some skill (2/3 out of 820 moons!!).
    -The soundtrack is really good.
-It's got some fun little details like the fact you can dress Mario in many ways and personalize the odyssey.
-And of course it looks nice graphically.
But other than that, with all of it's flawed content, this game is an amalgamation of ideas that never elaborate enough on themselves and at the end you only get a "tutorial version" of them, as i said, lots of wasted potential.
But well, at the end the game itself isn't awful even with all those flaws, it just feels like a lackluster and doesn't live up to past 3D Mario games, i hope the developers acknowledge all these flaws for the second game or whatever, because at it's best this game is kind of a seven or eight, although i'm gonna give it a six cause its score is highly inflated by probably kids that are experiencing their first open world game or weird adults that are too blinded by nostalgia.
If this is your first 3D Mario game or your first open world game experience i recommend you to try other games to see what i mean.

    Pros:
    - Controls are incredibly intuitive and motion controls are responsive
    - Diverse and flourishing worlds
    - Heavy amounts of re-playability
    - Fluidity of movement leads players to attempting speedrun strategies, and allows players to do complicated maneuvers to find moons easier

    Cons:
    - Game is too simple

At best, the game is decent.

    At worse, it's very repetitive.

Not saying it's bad, but I'm sure as hell not saying it's the best either. Not by a long shot.

Overall I found the game pretty enjoyable, but honestly I was expecting for something more for a game ranked as good ad Breath of the wild. The story is nice and the levels are fun to explore, but in the end I found it too short and also a bit repetitive.

I played this game and found it pretty good. The graphics are impressive, the gameplay is smooth, and each open world is unique and different from the others. Nevertheless, the moons are well-hidden, and the ways to get them are diverse and creative. In conclusion, I think I'm too old for this game. Expand

This is the first Mario game I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid. I loved they made Mario in 3D. Typical Mario story but I enjoyed traversing the different levels within the game. Solid Mario game!

Big step into the right direction, back to Collectathon-Glory after years of only "course-clear" games.

Controlling Mario never felt this good. It takes skill and training to master all of his moves and making use of them to explore hidden areas in the game is a lot of fun. The Worlds are finally a little bit more imaginative again conceptwise instead of falling back into

The Worlds are finally a little bit more imaginative again conceptwise instead of falling back into stereotypes, although there is still a little room for improvement (even weirder concepts for worlds would be amazing). Also the amount of worlds to explore with 10 kingdoms in total (not counting boss-platforms, tutorial worlds, etc) is fairly short, especially compared to other games in the series.

The music and graphics of the game are straight up amazing though. Very few Switch Games look and sound this good. Not much room for improvement here!

What I didn't like however was that the main-collectable in this game, "Power Moons", are a little too abundant to be exciting to collect. You receive Power-Moons for anything: Ground-Pounding on a shiny spot, planting a fruit, sitting on a bench... You can easily bypass huge chunks of levels including bosses(!) by just farming Power-Moons and then moving on to the next world. (Some players even reported accidentally skipping bosses due to this issue). The Game's Power-Moon-Counter doesn't even let you collect all the Power-Moons, since it will stop working once you hit 999 Moons. It would be nice to see the number of main-collectables be reduced and have them be a little bit more meaningful again in the next game.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
