While this is a very good game overall, there are a few things I really don't like about this game that bring it down for me. First, the motion controls. Some actions have mandatory motion controls to preform the action. First, the motion controls. Some actions have mandatory motion controls to preform the action. This wouldn't be an issue if there weren't so many different things you can do at once with motion controls, making it unnecessarily difficult to do the right one. Another is some of the kingdoms feel a little drawn out and not as original. For example of an amazing one, the Luncheon Kingdom. That place is so interesting, colourful and beautiful, but then there's the Sand Kingdom, which is mostly dull and boring until you save it. Lastly, the non-main character humans are really creepy. 7.5/10 Expand

Un juego correcto que te puede llegar a durar dos días, dada su escasa dificultad, aunque lo compensa con gráficos bonitos, una buena jugabilidad y una que otra Energiluna desafiante....

I really wanted to like this game more than I did. Not sure why I didn't, but I can say it is an incredibly well-crafted game that looks amazing, runs amazing, and plays perfectly as a 3D Mario game.

The most underwhelming game I've played thru on Switch.
First of all, the game is painfully easy compared to other Mario titles. Easy enemies, easy bosses, and no real platforming puzzles or challenges either.
On top of that, the game worlds are tiny and uninteresting, and their visuals are WiiU level. Not one world impressed me in this game. Only fun in this game were the retro

Only fun in this game were the retro references in the 2D sections, but those sections too were way too easy.
Far cry from SM64 or Galaxy. 6/10 from me, and that's me being generous.

I really don't understand why people are rating this game so highly. I swear this game feels like it was made for toddlers. Heck, even my cat can play this game. No skill is required at all. If you want a trophy for every single thing you do in life then this game is for you!

So much hype for this game but it doesn’t deserve it. Sure there is a lot of content but the quality is poor. Same old problems with camera controls that have always been an issue with 3D Mario games.

No imagination displayed in the level design, recycling world themes as always.

I can't fault the production values of this game, everything is top notch. The ability to be able to jump into your enemies works really well. Level designs are clever and imaginative. The way they incorporate the 8 bit Mario is also done very well. Cappy is a good addition but in two player (though he's not as fun as you think he might be). So why only a 7? Well, for me the later Mario games (Odyssey, Galaxy, etc) although very cleverly done, can't escape the fact that platform games in this day and age are, to be blunt, quite tedious. It's a game genre from forty years ago, and for me is just too simplistic. I'd much rather be playing a fast sonic level, or shooter like fortnite, or rpg like the wticher. Nintendo have done brilliantly well to keep Mario as high profile as he is, but at the end of the day jumping on top of things is really quite boring. Expand

Not bad, but not amazing either. Extremely overrated. I have yet to even complete it because it just does not suck me in. Unlike this game, I could pop in Mario 64 or Sunshine and have a blast.

This game is highly overrated like Botw. The aesthetic is terrible, bad color palette, some really ugly characters, and **** anime music in the climax? Its kind hard to call this a Mario game sometimes. This game has some really cool gimmicks, but it ends up feeling wide and shallow. This is definitely pretty good value for money, and no where near deserving the scores it gets. TheThis game is highly overrated like Botw. The level design should be enough to the player figure out where they should go to find the moons... but we need a HINT in the map... it proves that design is bad...

Another overrated mediocre game. Fillers are widespread rather than careful designs. Just look at are the boss battles, in three different stages, you have the same strategy to fight the boss (except the robot which is the best boss). You have to beat many bosses twice, even including the final boss. A lot of moon collections are also repetitive.

Thought this was a decent mario game, not the best levels or most memorable, mario controls really well and its fun to pull off moves to zip around the levels, but the level designs are too simple and the over-abundance of moons diminishes the feeling of getting one. Mario Odyssey is a fun, uplifting game. It is especially fun when you have a kid to play it with (my nephew was around 7 at the time we played it). It’s a good looking game that plays well. Players can “get good” with using the hat to help Mario leap and bound through the worlds.

It’s not really a game I’ve enjoyed playing by myself though. And I’m not big on hunting for all the moons,

It’s not really a game I’ve enjoyed playing by myself though. And I’m not big on hunting for all the moons, so I’ve found myself playing other games. I beat the game with my nephew and we played for a while after it was beaten, but once you move on, there’s not much reason to come back. Lots of people love the game though, and the praise they shower it with is earned. To me, it just isn’t fun without a kid enjoying it with you.

If you’re a Mario fan, this is the Mario game to get on the Switch. If you’re looking for a game to play with a young kid, then I honestly can’t think of a better game than this one to do just that.

Pretty good game, actually my favorite 3D Mario game. Lots of creative worlds, sharp controls, the only problem is that the "Moons", which are what you collect this time, can sometimes feel a bit cheap, as there are too many of them and some are too easy to get. Some of the worlds are too small, and it could have used another world or two, but overall a solid game.

I thought that the Moon collection system in the game was incredibly repetitive and honestly became a chore for me. I did not feel any sense of accomplishment when I got a Moon. This was probably because of how easy the game is. The game is such an easy breeze that it felt meaningless to me. The capture mechanic was the coolest thing to me when I first tried it out on every enemy but it got old WAY too fast. The visuals are very striking and love that the game runs at a stable 60fps which absolutely makes this the most visually impressive Mario game yet. The controls feel super snappy and the music is incredible. Unfortunately though, these positives straight up do not outweigh the negatives to me. As I already mentioned, the moment-to-moment gameplay just does not feel meaningful to me because of the game's lack of difficulty and collectables (the integral Moon system). Honeylune ridge is an exception, but that’s because they had already done space extremely well and the remix of star chance fits extremely well. The collectibles are also lackluster. The purple coins are basically where normal coins would be in a different 3D Mario but they are better than the power moons. Power moons replace stars in this game ambit are something entirely different instead of a star that is the focus of the levels the power moon are a collectible that are at best at the end of a plat forming Challenge or after a boss fight, but at worst a chore that are under the ground or just around a corner the worst of these are the dog and nut stars which just require waiting and are tedious. Moons are just not satisfying to collect cause the only reward is more moons. Stars in other Mario games are satisfying to collect because their challenging and their is buildup to the stars. Moons in odyssey are where one ups would be in in other 3D Mario. Idk Mario odyssey just doesn’t have the same magic its much more joyful and lacks the depth of the other 3D Mario’s while before they had characters like rosalina who had an optional story and it was sad. Mario galaxy had a sadness to it that makes Mario odyssey look like an illumination film. The kingdoms are also not that memorable and really short in the main run through of the game each kingdom feels insanely short if you get only the required amount of moons, but getting more that the required amount of moons is tedious and feels like looking through a wasteland of a kingdom to find a random moon on a ledge. A lot of the moons are very similar making the game feel the same throughout. It is also painfully easy speedrunning the game is fun becuase the movenment is fun not because the game is fun. While other 3D Mario’s are about platforming challenges odyssey feels like a trek that goes nowhere and is barely satisfying my urge to do challenging things which are not to be found in odyssey. I understand if you like the game, but for me it was good but not greater other like other 3D Mario’s except sunshine and 3D land. Expand

This game is really good. The soundtrack is amazing! Though, after completing the game, I do not feel like playing it anymore, and that is why it only gets 7/10. The difficulty is balanced even for Nintendo Switch newcomers and this was my first game I played on a Switch.

This game is really good. The soundtrack is amazing! Though, after completing the game, I do not feel like playing it anymore, and that is why it only gets 7/10. The difficulty is balanced even for Nintendo Switch newcomers and this was my first game I played on a Switch.

If you want to just casually play the game, I think it is a fine 10-13 hour long experience. If you are going for collecting 100% of the power moons, I think it is something around 25 hours. I really want to collect all of them, but simply there is no point for doing it. Most of the power moons are simply lying around in the open, which makes them easy to find, but absolutely not rewarding at all. Take Cat Shines in Bowser's Fury for example. They are always locked away behind some kind of a challenge (such as riding Plessie, chasing down a rabbit, chasing shadow Luigi, general platforming on islands...), they are challenging to get and feel rewarding. In Super Mario Odyssey, that is no longer the case.

The other thing about Power Moons is that there are way, way too many. That amount is absolutely unnecessary, and could have been lowered by 250 at least. Most of the moons are in the open anyway. There are around 850 unique moons to collect around the kingdoms, but the rest is locked away, because you have to buy the remaining 149 moons from shops for coins. Not only that it is an extremely lame decision, but you can buy the moons indefinitely, allowing you to reach the 999 goal (100%) with not much effort. Just buy tons of Moons. And if someone does so, you are not going to feel like collecting actual moons anymore, because you simply have the golden Odyssey sail, no point in doing it. Not mentioning that some of them make absolutely no sense. Why would some idiot even make a parking lot for motorbikes on a roof with only one single spot and even give you something for parking there? How did they expect citizen to regularly reach there!

Nintendo's idea about purple coins is absolutely ridiculous. There is no way to find every purple coin in the game without looking for them, there is no way to buy a hint like for Power Moons. Now you might be thinking, that they are around Power Moons to find. Well, yeah, good point, but not really the greatest. There is always a chance that someone may miss some while going for the moons, either because they just want to play the game or miss them by accident. If that happens, what are you going to do? Do all moons again to traverse most of the kingdom one more time only to miss them again, or look them up on YouTube? All collectibles in all games which force the player to look them up on YouTube are bad collectibles, and purple coins cannot save themselves from being crap, that is how Nintendo created them.

I really like that you can dress up Mario in some costumes, most of them look really really good. Some of the outfits grant you access to specific areas through the game and certain characters have some reactions when talking to them with a specific outfit. Most of them are really expensive, though, especially those ones unlocked later on (prices go up to 9999 coins for one item!!!), and they are absolutely unnecessary. Could have been lowered to 75% price.

A big plus is that the game has lots of post-game content. If you completed the game on 100%, you still can kill some time playing Luigi's Balloon World, which is fun, if you don't encounter hackers, but that's a story for another time.

Tanks are an absolutely ass capture. No, seriously. When playing while capturing a tank, you will feel that it is really off. They are so slow and aiming is painful as hell. The crosshair moves at different speeds on Y and X axis, meaning it is really hard to aim (and obviously, you cannot change it!)

Also a good thing to ask, why do the characters behave like absolute idiots? I understand that it is a game for kids, but keep in mind that adults and teens play as well. Some of the characters say absolute trash and feel like they have vacuum in their brain. They also made Pauline a gold digger (she does not like cheap nice umbrellas, but likes expensive purses instead LOL).

The very last two post game kingdoms are not kingdoms and have no reason to exist in the first place. They are not kingdoms, but doors to challenge rooms (one to a boss rush and the second one to a super long and tight section with no checkpoints). They just randomly added couple Moons to one of them to make them seem less empty and left them to rot there, but that did not help. They should have been in the last kingdom of the main story and just opened up after you reached all requirements to access them. With one being significantly emptier than the other, there are more almost completely blank kingdoms around the game. What a wasted opportunities they were, what a pity. Story moment, then random Moons and then bye.

The game is extremely awesome. But it still has a lot of flaws, preventing it from being perfect.

Pretty fun Mario platformer that has a lot of diversity. Felt a bit easy but it is a kid's game so didn't expect dark souls level difficulty.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
