Having such a blast with it. This game will be for you if 1) you like spaceships customization 2) well crafted space shooter gameplay 3) STARFOX! The story is simple enough that you can simply enjoy it, the controls are tight and well thought and the universe is so cool to explore. The fact that you can take this with you on the go is so amazing! A must buy.

I've following this game since last year and I'm quite happy with the final game. Being a Starfox fan I couldn't have missed this on Switch. Starlink is addictive and enjoyable. The gameplay is seamless and I will be honest I never use the toys. Ubisoft was really really smart making this co-op out of the box on switch. You have everything you need to play couch co-op from the very first mission to the very last. Not only that I found NO ISSUE with co-op play. It was super enjoyable and in my opinion the best co-op games on switch right now. You can seamlessly pop in and out of play and your friend can just keep going with no need to restart the game just a quick menu press. You can both you ALL of the unlocked weapons ships etc. So you are not limited digitally even if you have one of the toys. and the split screen is really really well done that you never worry about camera issues or screen cramping.

I decided to pick up some additional toys for my copy of the game so I picked up the Neptune Ship pack because I liked the look of the pilot. A Kharl Zeon Pilot. Same reason and the Crusher Weapon pack. All of this cost me about $75CND or $50USD. It was a worth while add on. These simple changes gave me a third ship. The ships are important because each one is like a life in the game. If you loose one you can use another but once you run out you have to pay to start over. It gave me a nice spread of elemental weapon options and it allowed me to play the starlink story without fox and side missions and the starfox story after my first complete playthough. The mission system is really smartly designed allowed you to control how you play so if you just want to play the starfox content which their is A LOT of you can. I appreciated the control to do this because it made it seem like you are getting 1.5 times the game this way.

I am holding back from giving the game a perfect score however. While their is a decent amount of variety in the missions and the game is completely action packed. It's never boring. It does start to repeat a lot of the same missions. Go to a planet. Build outposts, kill primes repeat. While their is more exploration then just this and you can help locals and gather rate items and fuse mods to level up your ship etc. The voice acting and dialog is quire reused. The plants while they are different are still very much the same. I would have liked to see different types of aliens different challenges like maybe Observatories are harder to build on one planet then another etc. I wish each planet had a bonus and a draw back the player needed to figure out. The last thing this game is missing is Online Co-Op. If Ubisoft makes a sequel and I really hope the do and if they address these few minor issues and add online co-op it would easily be the BEST space exploration/Starfox game to date. Saying that Starlink is right next to Starfox 64 as one of the best Star Fox games ever made. You don't feel like he was just tossed in at all! If you are looking for the best way to buy this title I recommend the digital deluxe pack. It's the same price as the starter kit but comes with all of this ships, pilots etc unlocked and their is no need for toys at all to play. This is the only game I can honestly say it is of great benefit to go digital over physical!

Excellent and underrated game - very much in the spirit of Star Fox. Playing this on easy, it offers a nice, relaxing experience of combat, levelling and exploration in an an open world / star system which reminds me of playing Skyrim.

It is a wonderfully accessible toys-to-life game (that doesn't HAVE to kill your pocketbook if you don't want it to), that actually has solid to exceptional gameplay. It feels more like Ubisoft is trying to make an appeal to make a full-blooded Star Fox game, and they hit pretty damn on the mark.

The physical collectibles are astonishingly well done, and outside of the pilot figures have very good profiles that would make for very good displays even when your playing days are largely done.

While a novel idea, it DOES get quite repetitive over time. There aren't that many different things to do, and not that many different types of opponents to square off against. This is the sort of game that is probably best played in short bursts rather than hours long marathons.

On top of that, while the actual game story isn't BAD... it's not exactly GREAT either. There was potential there, but it very clearly took a far back seat to the gameplay, which if you're someone who values narrative IS a detriment.

All said and done, it's a good title. Could be better, and if toys-to-life still had some life, I'd say that it'd deserve a sequel (compatible with the first set of toys, of course). But this is overwhelmingly likely to be the only iteration... and fortunately it stands on its own more than well enough.

This is fundamentally an enjoyable game but I simply don't believe it is worth the high scores it is getting, especially for the exorbitant $120 AU (around $85 US, and the huge difference in price between countries is another issue entirely!) I paid for the Standard digital edition.

Firstly, the mechanics are intrinsically fun. It is fun to fly your ship around, change weapons on the fly (very easy with digital version) and blast your enemies. The worlds in the game are pretty and in general I think the art style is well done. It really does look beautiful when you fly around the planet and create your own sunrises and sunsets! Music and sound are done very well too IMO, and being able to freely fly between worlds is a great idea.

However, there are so many things wrong with this game I just don't see how anyone can give it a 10. Some things that I find offputting and would warn others about too are as follows:
    - This is NOT a Star Fox game, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Great Fox and ROB are not present, and the Star Fox characters are obviously tacked on. They are included in the opening cutscene and given their own sidequest in the game, but what disappointed me was that during a pivotal cutscene halfway through the game, Fox (who I had been playing as the entire time) was conspicuously absent. It just felt weird and disconnected the way it had been done. An admirable attempt by Ubisoft, though, and if you weren't coming in expecting a Star Fox game then you won't be disappointed. Think of Fox as a bonus character.
    - The pay-for-parts system is obviously a complete ripoff. I thought I would be fine with the Digital Standard edition since you get one of each weapon type. This allows me to exploit all enemy vulnerabilities and open all types of treasure chest. However even with this there are things locked behind a paywall. Mainly, there are 35 upgrades you can unlock throughout the course of the game. However, 12 of these require you to level up certain characters (4 upgrades each for Eli, Kharl and Shaid) all of whom are conveniently missing from the Digital Standard edition. I paid $120 AU and there are still features locked behind a paywall. Sad.
    - The graphics are clunky and don't look current-gen on the Switch at least. Transitions from space-to-planet look pretty bad, and you can tell the disc-shaped planet you were flying into is turning into a flat terrain within the game's engine as you descend. It just looks bad to me.
    - The control scheme can occasionally be irritating, mainly because with inverted flight controls turned on, they for some reason become non-inverted during certain sequences, requiring you to put up with reverse movement for those sequences. Even worse, motion aiming (which would have been a fantastic feature) is only available when zoomed in by clicking the right stick, and with inverted flight controls, the motion controls are also inverted, meaning pushing the controller down makes your ship aim up and vice-versa! Seriously?! How did that one make it through testing?
    - Gameplay elements are extremely copy-and-paste style. You raid pirate bases throughout the game, but they are all identical! Some characters only have 1 line of dialogue recorded for a given event, so get used to hearing Razor say "I'm picking up some wreckage near your position. Might be worth checking out" hundreds of times whenever you find loot in space (she keeps saying it repeatedly while you stay near it too). The gameplay itself, while inherently fun, is very repetitive, with only a limited number of enemy and mission types to pursue throughout the game. The different planets offer a lot of variety but you are still doing the same things with just a different look.
    - The main story is very short. I don't understand how Ubi thought they would make money by releasing a Wave 2 of ships/weapons/etc., since everyone will have finished the game by then! I haven't finished it yet and will update this if my perspective changes but it seems to me that there's really nothing to keep people coming back, let alone spend further money on an already expensive game. That said, I have my fingers crossed for some hefty content updates from Ubisoft, but I guess we'll see.

Bottom line: I don't regret buying this game; even with all its glaring flaws it is still fundamentally a well-presented and fun experience. I would advise interested players to give it a go if you are willing to spend the money, but it certainly is far from good value-for-money compared to games like Odyssey or BotW in terms of both quality and the amount of time you'll have playing it. I would strongly advise against getting a physical edition, too, unless you want to spend hundreds on the toys or individual DLC purchases, as the provided weapons are very limited outside of the two digital editions.

Thanks for reading and hope this helped. :)

My tween son doesn't really care for or know of Star Fox but he was also interested in the game. He chose to buy the digital version with his own allowance on Xbox One while I bought the Digital Deluxe edition on Switch. Having now played both, the difference between the two is very telling.

It comes down to a simple question: Which do you value more, the Star Fox crossover content or visual fidelity and smooth gameplay? The sad reality is the Switch version is, by far, the most inferior version graphically. While it stays at 720p in mobile mode, it uses dynamic resolution while docked and often struggles to maintain 960p, especially while planetside. Both docked and in handheld mode, the draw distance, texture quality, shadowing, post processing effects, and object and enemy density are all also turned significantly down compared to the Xbox One version. But particularly more damning is the fact that, even with all of these necessary graphical downgrades, the Switch struggles to maintain a steady framerate, frequently dipping into the low 20fps range during hectic combat sequences.

The Xbox One version, by contrast, runs buttery smooth, never drops below 1080p, and the added graphical fidelity elements makes the planets feel far more alive and interesting than the often barren stretches of land presented on the Switch version.

It's also my experience that it's not a very portable friendly game. It eats battery almost as badly as LoZ: Breath of the Wild did. With a solid, full, charge, you might get a good 2 hours of play on the base battery alone.

The core gameplay, regardless of platform, is pretty solid but painfully average. There's a few minor quibbles like it would be nice to be able to remap controls for shields and boost. It's generally what you'd expect from a light sci-fi, cartoonish (a la Disney XD) style Ubisoft open-world game. However, the biggest caveat: If you're here to play the game and not collect toys, BUY THE DIGITAL VERSION. Otherwise you're being fleeced to a ridiculous amount for a bunch of physical items. Other than being able to play as Fox throughout the entire campaign, the actual added missions for the Star Fox crossover content is barely 2 hours long, and a lot of that is spent flying from point-to-point.

I can't get over just how much better the Xbox One version looks on the same display that I use for my Switch while docked. It's night and day. Overall, it's a 7 of a game, but the graphical differences, seeing them first hand, knock the Switch version down to a 6.

Let the downvotes come from the hurt Nintendo fanboy legion, I don't care:
This is NOT a StarFox game no matter what they want you to believe. The StarFox content makes up less than 2 total overall hours. And if you choose to buy the StarFox collaboration, you must know up front that you are buying the most graphically inferior version of the game.

The fact that there is no way to change weapons outside of the initial one's your given depending on which version of the game you purchased or buy purchasing either the toys or the DLC with real world money is also a huge bummer. The Story is short and to the point but lacks any sort of depth to flesh out the characters and this universe beyond a quick description of who and what they are. Music and sound design are solid but again don't really stand out in any significant way. I hope they take some of the game play ideas from Starlink and integrated them into the next Star Fox game in a more creative and less repetitive fashion. And while I'm one that note if I'm being perfectly honest... If Star Fox wasn't in this game i would have never bothered purchasing Starlink: Battle For Atlas. Starlink really does need all the help it can get. Expand

Another plus for the game is that you can build your own starship based on the pieces of the starships and weapons that you already have, if you are using this toys to life it coild be more flexible and funny, but it also can be done if you using the digital version of the starships (you can useing the digital version of the starships that you have phisically)

I got the Digital Deluxe for 50% off during the christmas sale and it's a much better time having access to all weapons and ships and it also leads to a more varied and tactical co-op experience, the toys are nonsense and is what put me off getting this game at the beginning but I'm just glad they have an almost all in one digital version without spending a silly amount on all the toys and that 50% off was a no brainer.

If you're a fan of Star Fox, get this game and enjoy the fanboyism of this amazing series, or if you're not a fan of Star Fox, grab this game instead on the PS4 and enjoy a better resolution and textures and you'll have a surprisingly good time exploring the planets, searching for loot and mods and gearing up your ships with mods which buff weapons and ship capabilities.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s an Okay game but I did enjoy myself even though at one point I wanted to stop playing and move on to the next game, but then something just kept me going. I guess it was a sense of accomplishment when I was able to clear an entire planet from the Legion.

The game is a 3D shooter, you’re in the Arwing the entire game which is awesome. You go from objective to objective, planet to planet and do the same thing over and over with slight variations. You have to travel long distances (until you can fast travel) with just nothing interesting to explore or encounter except some reoccurring and redundant battles. They re-use some many of their assets it’s incredible, so it’s not very varied.
There’s like so many weapons I could’ve used but I didn’t want to pay extra from my own pocket to get them so I had the standard 3, plus the Arwing Laser canon, which is also pretty cool and surprisingly powerful. I found myself changing my weapon gear often enough but without paying there’s a serious lack of variety.

Soundtrack is like non existant, I only noticed it once. Such a shame because the Starfox franchise has great tunes.

Gameplay is fun, dogfights in space or ground combat on a planet. It was challenging at times actually. I really liked that I could switch between two flight modes: hovering on the ground and just free flying. There was a decent variety with the enemies.

Framerate was very smooth, controls were weird at first because I was used to Starfox 64 but I got used to it very quickly. It really helped that I was using the Splitpad pro as I could map the boost button to a back button instead of having to let go of the right joystick and boost independently, it would really suck to play without that.

The Starfox side quest with Wolf was short and not really noteworthy. Wolf was badass which was cool. Then once you kick his ass there’s more to the Starfox quest but I needed to pay for it, so that stopped there.

An Okay game, I don’t necessarily recommend this, but fans of Starfox and space battles might see it through. I had fun with it, it was at its best for the last 5 hours.

This game blows me away each time I boot it up, seriously. The storyline is a little cheesy, but its still fun, kind of like watching a really well made Saturday morning cartoon. The graphics are gorgeous and really show what the Switch can do. The toys are everything for me, I love games that bring toys to life and do it the right way. I could never get into Skylanders or anything of that sort because it was a bit too childish for me. But this game is the right balance, it could be fun for a kid or (a nerdy adult like myself). The toys are totally affordable right now, so of course I went mad with purchasing every single ship and every weapon pack, along with pilots too. The toys are well-made and detailed, they look nice on a display shelf. There is so much to do!!! You can identify species on different planets, collect loot, take down bad guys with awesome weapons, travel space, take part in dog fights with space pirates. If you like space and flying, just get this game. If you are a collector, get the physical edition, if not, get the digital deluxe. Just make sure you realize what you are getting into with the physical edition. Weapon types matter, pilots do as well, and ships count as lives.
P.S. As many reviewers have mentioned, Star Fox was made for this game, Ubisoft knows what they are doing when it comes to working with Nintendos' tech at this point, and their characters shine with the Snowdrop engine.

The main villain is incredibly generic and the final battle against him was kind of easy and simple.
Also the game asks you to spend quite a bit of time doing side content so that you can build up alliance meters, gather materials and build structures on planets. I enjoyed doing this so it feels like a minor complaint but it just seems like too much of the game is spent doing side content which can involve fighting the same bosses again and again.
Like I said, this game has some problems, but visually it looks pretty great, the combat and flight controls feel very solid and I had a lot of fun exploring and shooting aliens. It also feels pretty rewarding to watch as a planet which has been covered in some rather sinister fog, gradually turns in a clear skyed paradise thanks to your help.
I'd definitely recommend it if you can get it on sale but i'm not sure it'd worth 60.
Would I like to see a sequel? Not particularly.. but i'd love to see the devs make a full on starfox game. I think with this foundation and those characters they could make something pretty great :).

As a person who knows Star Fox gameplay inside and out, no this is no Star Fox. But again, this is a cross over. It does things differently. The combat is streamlined and easy to get into. You can master it in literally seconds. The controls are descent. The game does become more fun as you go along, but it doesn’t become radically different either. The real fun is customizing your ship and master them for skill points. As I suspected, the Star Fox missions are bland and not exciting. The cutscenes were parlor tricks in its marketing to get more sales. And that’s fine. Oh well, aside from that the game is descent. This is a good entry point for people never having played a space shooter before.im adding an additional comment after experiencing the DLC, the game is still average. StarLink is one game why I don’t like open world games. They’re all repetitive, and they lack skill. Star Fox as a series has infinitely more skill than this. Not close.

I am a sucker for games that make you feel quick and make you feel awesome with very fluid maneuverability when you master the controls. This game will do just that. the combat is fun. The flying, just as much if not more. The music is absolutely beautiful at times. Some scores not so much, but others are very well done and may I dare say, some of the scores sound pretty epic as you jet across a planet just above ground level like some sexy scene out of a bad ass sifi film. The environment is absolutely gorgeous. The first planet you will visit has alot of desert to it, however, in some areas that contain vegetation, the plants and animals all remind me of a combination of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, meets No Mans Sky with a little bit of Disneys Pixar pixy dust sprinkled on top. It's pretty beautiful and vibrant at times. The cutscene are very well done also. The customization of the ships and the extent that you can upgrade these ships was quite surprising and impressive to. Like I said, i havent played much, but if you liked star fox 64 and even if you like No Mans Sky or any game that gives you a ship and let's you go anywhere, I dont see why you wouldn't like this title. And as I said before, the first planet you visit is quite pretty at times. Key word here, "FIRST PLANET". Yes. Their are MULTIPLE PLANETS TO VISIT! All open world. I'm not quite sure how many planets their are, but the first one was pretty robust. The map UI Is quite amazing as well. You have a 3D spherical map of each planet that you are currently exploring and you can just take that puppy and spin and manipulate it like God himself. And like I said. That's ONE PLANET of many. The fact that this game flew under the radar (pun intended) is beyond me. If you like dog fighting and rocketing through the atmosphere seamlessly from planet to planet, with Fox Mcloud to boot, I HIGHLY suggest you pick up this title.

This game is pretty awesome. The graphics and visuals are beautifull and the gameplay mechanics are solid. You don't need all the physical figures to play the game and I beat the game with just the starterpack figures. The Switch version is definitly the best one to pick up due to the portabillity and the Arwing figurine. The game also has a lot of replayability and sidequests.

Divine experience, best game from the genre that I've ever played, by far, the first momento that you change for the Planet and the orbit is just unforgetable.

This is a very fun and addictive game. Sometimes it may seem a bit repetitive if you want to complete it to the 100 %, but the universe is huge and you just can simply skip that repetitive mission for a while and going anywhere else to have fun. I got the standard digital version and I never had the impression that I need the physical toys to enjoy fully the game.

I love star fox! I’m not the largest fan of open world games but this game made me like them. It’s annoying that it’s a toys to life but you can play it digitally with a pro controller. The planets are fun to explore, the story line is great and every other thing about this game is good.

A heck of a fun open-world space fighter game which knows how to ramp up the challenge, and feels all the more iconic with Starfox in the Switch version, but the knowledge that all the unlockable weapons, ships and pilots (plus one extra mission) are locked in your face behind real-money purchases holds it back that much.

Cringe inducing characters and dialogue. Repetitive gameplay. Completing the storyline objectives will leave you wanting more. Pay to unlock ship and weapon upgrades. Not a whole lot to love about this game.

Amazing and fluid exploration, combat and tons of content. Starfox was integrated in a way that feels like it's his own game. It's very cheap now so totally worth the money, especially with the airwing toy. I was very surprised by this game, ubisoft has been doing a great job woth their nintendo content.

I played this for 3 days straight and enjoyed every minute of it! This is an immersive and addictive experience and I loved exploring all the alien worlds and deep space. I wanted to keep going after I'd finished the main story, but after several additional hours spent improving my alliance I found the gameplay loop just a bit too repetitive and now I've moved on to another game.

Very well done mechanics, a great story can easily be integrated as the next star fox game. The characters of this game can be a great addition to the next starfox game if Nintendo chooses to do one

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. decent game. I liked the story to the game. It may be basic but there was one character who was really funny and kept the game going. I also love how the star fox crew was involved in the story. I just wish that they would've been in more cut scenes like for example when the other crew's leader died, fox should've had his input about his dad and that they were going to beat Grax together. It seemed like they were only involved in the first couple of cut scenes. As for the gameplay, it's great and when you fight off a group of enemies or beat an enemy controlled tower, it feels so good but the gameplay is a little repetitive as sometimes you need to use the same strategy to beat the enemies or maybe it felt the same because you had a lack of variety of mission structure. Also, there is a difficulty spike when you try to get to other planets so grinding and customizing your ship is key to getting through the game. It's been a while since I've played the game but I enjoyed it. Lastly the graphics are great and sometimes it feels good to discover a new planet. Expand

Average for me. Very repetitive. The boss fights seem to be a bit long, with no challenge at the same time (possibly it's my weak ship's fault). Nice visuals.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas is a surprise hit for Nintendo Switch. Furthermore, embedding Star Fox in was a masterstroke. From a surprisingly good score and audio cues from characters, to stunning vistas and scenery, there are many positives to be had. There will be many who appreciate the large number of tasks to do, but others will be deterred by the repetitiveness of them, although these are largely optional. The main issue is essentially asking what point of sale is the best value for money as no option is cheap.
