Great and funny online PvP and a cool fandom, but the story is way to short to make me believe 60€ is the right price for this game. People, who do not use the online service should not buy it

Multiplayer needs to be better. I want to be on my friend's team; not their opponent. Great and fun shooter game though. Great graphics, nice sounds.

Its a nice onlinegame, but in this Game is no anti-cheat, needs a very good Internetconnection and its laggy. For 20€ or $ in a year its to bad. BUT in Splatoon2 are a lot of gear and Weapons and thats a big + for Splatoon2. The fights are different to other shooters. I like this game and I have 400h played this game. It's a must have for NSO users!

Most of the issues that I have with this game is due to Nintendo Switch Online. Other than that it’s a great game, although the single player offerings are not that great.

The game is good and original but the single player is a bit lackluster. I'm hoping in Splatoon 3 will have a bigger and more of an open world single player campaign. The multi-player is fun but I think it is too derivative of the first game... Still a good game but you may as well wait and get the 3rd game in a year.

I love Splatoon, so I may be biased with the 2nd game. When this game first came out it really did feel like Splatoon 1.5. It would’ve been great if most of the features that are now in the game would’ve been there at the beginning.

Salmon run isn’t always available, which kind of sucks. The only new rank mode in Splatoon 2 was clam blitz. I think it’s silly that features like not

I think it’s silly that features like not being able to change weapons between matches had to be added in an update (though it was added early on, but still). The updates were fun to get though as eventually we got new weapons with completely new special and sub weapons as well as new stages.

This game includes the option to change hairstyles and pants, which was something you could not change in the first game. I believe there are also more eye color options in this game as well. We also got even more hairstyles in an update later down the line.

The single player is fine, though it’s nothing mind blowing. The final boss battle seemed a lot easier than the one from the first game, which was a little disappointing.

Overall I continued to enjoy the splatfests like the previous game and I had lots of fun. Though I feel like it would have been nice for some more major updates.

Both the single-player and multiplayer modes are great. Different weapons add great variety to the gameplay. One negative is that the maps and game modes change every two hours, so you might not be able to play the map/game mode you want.

Splatoon 2 is a fun third person shooter that expands on the previous entry and makes it better in almost every way. The first person campaign may be short, but is a big step up from Splatoon 1. Very funny and nice game, although the story mode isnt the best and to get the 100% you have to complete the same level 9 times with diffrent weapons which is boring. In summary the game makes a lot of fun but the online mode insnt that great because its not ranked from skill or level, which makes it hard for new players to start.

It's mild fun, just don't expect to have any fun with friends and family at home, as split screen is not an option. Otherwise there is a short and bland single-player mode, and the main meat of the game is online. Very little has changed from the previous entry as well. Avoid this game unless you live for online play.

A good game let down by lack of improvements.

No amount of polish and digits at the end of the title can fool anyone here. This is just spaltoon 1 again. The improvements that the first one needed arent here and the fact that you no longer have the second screen map make this feel like the prequel. If you played the first game you'll be frustrated yet again, having to get to level 10 (at least a dozen hours) of the dullest mode the game has to offer to be able to play the fun stuff. On top of that there is still no replay to show you how you died, you still have to come offline to change your load outs, and no new gameplay elements seem to have been introduced.

On top of all this there is still no voice chat, sure you can use youe phone and the nintendo app to voice chat, but i can only use my phone and facetime whilst playing this game, doesnt mean this game has video chat now does it.

A lazy effort alround by nintendo.

Splatoon 2 is unique on the surface; new creative ideas for design, but within is the same tired, monotonous gameplay design Nintendo refuses to budge on. While I understand this might be what core players desire, it means Nintendo is now ONLY making gameplay for that player base and the rest be damned!

Everything works in the game. Shooting is fun, maps are fun, the objectives are fun, upgrades feel good to get, but there is where and how far I felt it was worth to go. After getting compete gear what is there truly left to do with Splatoon 2? You are left with simply getting to an equilibrium with combat against other players to endlessly do the same thing over and over and over. I personally find this is indicative of the current video game market; but Nintendo are the LEADERS in monotonous game design.

As said said before: everything works, but there's nothing to work towards, nothing more akin to a past trope equivalent in video games: Earning Points. This is how the gaming industry has moved in the last few years: Build a game, debase things that worked in generations past (story is dumb in games), exclaim ONLY gameplay matters, hide ineptitude (can't be bother to make a story that works) build EVERYTHING around gameplay, create boring endless pvp fighting that amounts to nothing but more of the same, just with the same handful of maps/objectives. How many times can someone do the samething I wonder? And I know there will be people which will disagree here; that's expected. You are part of the community that ALWAYS wanted this, the vast majority though are stuck.

If you are looking for something new from Nintendo with Splatoon 2, you will be getting only half new. A solid pvp shooter which is nothing more than a monotonous point collector simulator with vibrant colors.

Also there is a new story for the single-player campaign, that was something i was expecting bigger improvements in terms of length and production value for this sequel. However, even good, it is disappointedly similar and short as the first game.
So, i'd say that if you skipped the Wii U, go for it and have a great time, but if you have played the original to death, you may get tired of playing the same stuff all over again.
Splatoon 3 will probably happen some day, so i'm counting on a completely re-invention for the series next time.

    - There is a wide range of weapons, sub weapons, and super abilities that all feel great to use in their own respects and all have their own unique functionality. It all comes down to preference.
    - Despite a ton of small issues, the game is a very fun take on the shooter genre. Covering the map in paint and surfing as a squid is very enjoyable.
    - Salmon Run adds some nice variety to multiplayer
    - The soundtrack is catchy

    Mixed:
    - Bosses could have been a little better but it’s nice that they’re in there at all
    - Tons of cosmetic items but the scrub system is tedious for gathering power-ups you want and players who put massive amounts of time towards it have huge advantages in multiplayer modes

    Bad:
    - Can’t switch your load outs in the middle of a match and you have to leave match making completely to do so
    - Veteran players have massive advantages over newcomers; match making pits low level players against high level players much to often
    - You lose your super charge when you are killed
    - Players can’t leave match making while searching for a game; waiting times can be very long and the timer resets every time a player enters the lobby or turns off their game
    - Voice chat…
    - Players can’t create parties with their friends; chances are you’ll often be fighting against friends rather than with them
    - The multiplayer map preview plays everytime you start up the game and is unskippable
    - Map rotations are dumb and the fact that you can’t play Salmon Run whenever you want is stupid

There are 8 battle stages, but they change every two hours, so if you're interested in short session you'll be able to play only two of them. Every single day you get to watch unskippable cutscene presenting current stages even though you can check these anytime yo want in menu. Matchmaker is not very good, you either get into battle instantly or wait three minutes to be kicked out because there's not enough players. There's a lot of AFK players, whom in 4vs4 make a huge difference. After reaching level 10 you gain access to ranked battles (which is reasonable). There are three ranked modes, which also change every two hours. Therefore if you don't like one of modes, you won't be able to play other modes until time window passes. After reaching rank B- (which means gaining three ranks, or actually two if you're good enough) you gain access to league matches, which can only be played with friends against other teams. Since I only have two pals who own switch and neither of them have splatoon, I'm unable to play league battles. You cannot change weapons without quitting lobby (it's due to matchmaking being weapon based - which is BS, it matches completely wrong weapons sometimes, like 4 identical weapons in one team and 4 different weapons in another). You cannot communicate with teammates, so if someone does something stupid you cannot tell him what to do or insult him for being stupid. Only three messages are availabe - "booyah", "this way" and "ouch". It doesn't suit my communication needs at all. You can also use MOBILE APP for voice chat but only with your friends, so it's easier to use TS or Discord. There's also fourth game mode - salmon run, which is cooperative rush mode. I really like it, but you can't play it all the time since it has time windows (WTF nintendo?!). So, to sum things up - I don't like the matchmaker, I don't like time windows, I don't like playing two levels over and over again, I don't like completely unbalanced weapons. I get more annoyed than satisfied by this game.

There's also a single player mode, but it's so dull, there's no point in even launching it.

Team "balancing" is an issue. One game is a "blow out" for one team, the next, a "blow out" for the team you are selected for. "Blow outs" should be a rare occurrence, but they are not. There should be more games that are competitive. A regular "Bell Curve" should apply to game distribution.

This of course does not apply to "League" or "Custom" in #2.

Also, game "precision" could be improved, accounting more for evasive maneuvers that a player does in "close shot" situations. The game seems to err on the side of the shooter getting the "splat", rather than the "dodger" getting away.

On the defensive side, it's really easy to "stack" your player defensively (with clothing bonuses), making them way too difficult to splat with direct shots firing on them. Toning down the defensive bonuses might help here.

If you liked #1, #2 is recommended. If you've never played Splatoon before, this is a cool game that is fun, and can be addicting. Sometimes, it can be a little frustrating though.

Splatoon 2 is a great game but with bad matchmaking. I have to go against level 80s and I'm just level 30. Say its just a level but it means experience, you don't just die over and over and get to level 80. It's hard to have fun in a game where you have to keep losing and losing over high competitive play. Everything else is good though.

Great single player mode. Lots of content being poured out by Nintendo, including a full fledged single player DLC. The downsides to this game are the abysmal online server provided. But for those who haven’t played the original game, the idea of a multiplayer shooter where bullets are replaced by ink is certainly refreshing. It is not a typical team deathmatch though and in the main game mode called turf war, you are expected to cover the arena with paint. The other popular game mode is called salmon run, which is more of a teamplay mode and is as good as turf war. On paper, it should be a great game and the core game is pretty good. What ruined the experience for me though were some of the design decisions. Firstly, the game is a grindfest. There are many locked weapons, items which you can unlock by leveling up your character and it basically takes forever. Motion controls are not ideal, especially for a multiplayer shooter.

Other than that, Splatoon 2 has a super cringe game hub where you can hang out, interact with people. Every time you launch the game, you have to spend a minute to skip through some dialogues between two characters, which I’ve found super annoying. Colorful makeup wears up fast and the game is not worth the price point.

My original score on the game was a 4/10. After playing the game for a while I’m willing to bump up my score 2 points for not having mico-transactions, season passes, or charging for new maps. However, the matchmaking process is rubbish and I end up on a team that is either stomping on the opposition or being stomped. About 1/3 of the time there is a dropped player that dictates what side loses. It is less than satisfying to win a match only to see that the losing side had a zero point player. I’ve also been dropped from games with a “connection error”; when I start another match I’ve been greeted with a ban threat if I keep dropping. I haven’t rage quit this game yet. I have a stable internet connection (fiber optic) and I do not have connection issues with any other online game I’ve played on PS4 or PC. Considering the match making problems and dropped players I have to give the game a -1 point; the resulting delta then +1, so 5/10.

The game play was fun I really like the concept of a cartoon shooter that would be fun to play with my son. That being said there is no split-screen multiplayer mode. I could understand not supporting split-screen multiplayer for a game like Call of Duty but not a cartoon game that should share the same demographic as Mario Kart. With the exception of the very short campaign/tutorial the lion’s share of the game is online only; this becomes a problem when you find out Nintendo will be charging an annual fee for online play. On principal I’m not willing to pay full price for what is a yearly rental. Because the Switch doesn’t support voice chat it can be difficult to coordinate with your teem but that really didn’t hurt the game when I was playing it. I would have given this game a much higher score if it supported split-screen multiplayer and was either exempt from the online subscription fee or was a $40 game.

That said, Nintendo is being ridiculous with this game. If they created a car with infinite reusable energy, a breakthrough that could change the world, they would decide not to put in an air conditioner or enable the windows to be rolled down.

My rating instantly goes to a 10 when they make Salmon Run available at all times or at least allow you to create a lounge for it online at all times . They way they schedule this mode is one of the stupidest things I've seen in years. I'm also extremely frustrating that this is also the only realistic way I can play cooperatively with my friends. We cannot play cooperatively in turf war because the matchmaking randomizes the teams. We cannot play cooperatively in ranked either. Instead I have to wait for all my friends to become eligible for league battles. Come on Nintendo these simple-to-change things are having a major negative impact on this game

Splatoon 2 is a sequel in the same way pickles are a sequel to cucumbers. It doesn't do much different from the first game but does leave me feeling salty.

It's a decent game, the story mode is okay and the multiplayer is okay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd like to state that I've been trying to love the splatoon series since it's inception on the Wii U. However, Splatoon 2 Isnt the fix the game has desperately needed. Splatoon 2 in short is just a large add-on to the original splatoon 2. The singleplayer story and gameplay are not far different from the original. The game's main focus is online multiplayer but for one reason or another nintendo decided to keep the same poor-net code that plagued the last installment by choosing web-style hosting rather than dedicated servers and further lowering the games tick-rate. This has led to one thing I noticed about splatoon that always stays consistent, its how inconsistent the game feels. Theres no consistent hit detection, the games net-code favors weapons that instant kill than those with lower DPS such as the ink guns. So while playing you see that you hit a player enough to kill them yet due to the delay in the netcoding you are far more likely to die first if they are using weapons such as the sloshers, brushes, etc. This makes the gun type weapons less desirable in online matches because of they sheer reaction time you would need to even be able to compete. This leads me onto the motion controls. Ive had massive problems with the motion controls with the switch version compared to the last. Simply because none of the aim movements feel consistent, in my case using the pro controller which makes aiming a complete and utter chore. I hope in the next installment of this series nintendo puts on their big boy pants and actually do the framework of a competitive shooter rather than trying to make it look like one. Expand

    Pros:
    Visual design
less violence focused than other shooters
tries to focus on tactical thinking gameplay
respectable single player but still a multiplayer focused game

    Cons:
    performance issues (regular fps drops)
still favors who kills(splats) the most
gameplay is too much like modern Mario sunshine fluud controls
    unintuitive weapon firing
    motion controls
not friendly enough to newcomers who jump into multiplayer

overall i really was disappointed, i had hopes this would give me a satisfying shooter experience but instead i got something that felt stuck between FPS and a weird platformy art game. I loved the visual design and wanted to love the fact it gave a match win to territorial control, but the game ended up giving up the gameplay benefits mindless shooters and keeping the whoever kills the most in practice. i did not enjoy this game and it continued my disappointment in Nintendo releases for switch after Zelda. may not keep my switch now if Mario turns out this way.

This is a bad game. It has severall flaws. The controls aren't very precise, for example. The screen is cluttered with information. Single rounds last only for 3 minutes, yet the respawn times are like 10 seconds. Because you get killed a lot, you will mostly be staring at loading or connection screens. Don't buy this.

The game matches you against people 40 levels against you so if you want to have fun you have to grind levels, have fun losing.

TL;DR - Love it, but there needs to be more of it. There are too many ways to cut comparisons that make the game easily feel bare bones, most notably to the already bare bones original. This feeling only increased when Paid Online was introduced, a rip off now that new content has stopped and improvements to Online as a whole are nowhere to be heard of.

This feeling only increased when Paid Online was introduced, a rip off now that new content has stopped and improvements to Online as a whole are nowhere to be heard of.

I have a lot of detailed cons and few pros, but that's just because I'm really good at complaining and not describing good. I, in fact, adore this game a lot.

    Pros:

Unique and Fun Twist - There simply isn't anything that plays like Splatoon 2 other than the original, I'd gladly experience inking action day in and day out not only because of an engaging reward system, but actually being fun at its core. Not many games can say that.

    Cons:

Missing basic features - Since Nintendo has proven to be just like other companies as of late, I've decided to criticise them for this instead of being thankful that they're 'in the past'. Why no bots? Why no Single Player Salmon Run? Why no servers? Why can't the game tell me what I have and haven't bought already? Why are all the minigames gone, couldn't even port them?

Gear - The fun grinds to a halt when it comes to the gear system. I never re-roll because I know that I won't get what I want, so I always scrub slots. For some reason, the chunks just come way too slow. I guess it's improved in the sense that it's guaranteed, but it's worse in that it will always take forever. On that note, miss Splatfest and you're out of luck, simple as that.

Paid online - The quality just isn't satisfied if I have to continually pay for it. Keep in mind that I have a strong opinion that Paid Online is wrong full stop, but think about it, this version of Paid Online is at its worst, other platforms would at least butter you up so you don't feel bad that you're being forced into what should be a VERY unnecessary payment every year, on Nintendo you're paying for the sake of paying. Nintendo, if they insist on making it paid, should be buttering us up by bettering the online experience and putting more content into their online IPs, but after all this time there isn't so much as a rumour that they plan to do anything.

Lacking content - Stages and weapons never ported from the original, far too few online modes, especially casual ones, am I really asking much? It's such an easy fix too! Do what you have already been doing by using the Bucket tool on a pre-existing weapon palettes, re-arrange the pre-existing sub and special assets and release, I'm not a programmer and I know for a fact that this isn't hard. Stages? Re-release stages that ended up being overhauled overtime as 'classics' and port the stages that haven't been from the original. New modes? Easy: Single-Player Salmon Run, Survival Salmon Run (infinite amount of waves only stops after a crew wipe. Starts at easiest, gets harder by equivalent of 5 rank points each wave, more or less depending on performance. Scored by waves survived multiplied by average difficulty boosts across rounds.) Team Splatmatch (Team Deathmatch), a way to play pre-existing Ranked Modes casually, pre-existing modes but with asymmetrical multiplayer elements (usual team of 4 VS Player-Controlled and fully armoured Agent 4, fit with fully upgraded mains of each weapon class, every sub and all specials, equipped before the match), if they insist on Paid Online then a more substantial Offline, ability to play pre-existing modes Offline in general, pre-existing modes but with limitations on what main, sub and special is allowed to be used. I could go on, I really could.

Blasters - Nintendo thought it was smart to make a weapon class that can't miss, kills fast and has the advantage regardless of range. No, no it wasn't. Direct hit, instant kill. Miss twice, still a kill! Using a weaker Blaster that kills in 2 directs or 4 misses? Fires faster to compensate, I already mentioned you can't miss, it's exactly the same but with better coverage and maybe a more helpful set. Long range? Good, bully them without them even realising what's happening or being able to touch you. Short range? You DEFINITELY can't miss now and your range is way longer than you think due to the explosions. The only thing it can't do is get coverage, which doesn't matter as it will face every round essentially unopposed. Now yes, this class could be balanced out by removing automatic fire and requiring an additional button press for the ink bullet to explode to make them actually take skill to use and even make them more versatile, then maybe even buff their ink coverage to compensate for these changes, but after what they pulled with the Clash Blaster, I no longer trust the Devs to ever get this right. So, just remove the whole thing and equivalents, never speak of it again and never bring it back next game or in any game. Oh and a few other weapons are overpowered I guess, take this as a point about poor balancing?

I rented Splatoon 2 because of the great reviews. I only rented it for the single-player campaign because my internet does not support multiplayer games. I have never met a motion-controller that I like, and Splatoon 2 didn't change my mind about that. It uses motion controls to aim, and that makes aiming awkward and frequently frustrating. There is no precision to aiming, and that is very important in a 3rd person shooter. The single-player campaign is hidden in the city. I found the first two levels, which took me about an hour to complete. There are 5 levels total from the guide I read. I quit the game after the first two levels were completed because of the motion controls though. The game has an interesting mechanic where your character can turn into a squid and swim in any ink you've laid down, which happens with every shot of your gun as it shoots ink. But your gun doesn't have a very long range, so you can't hit anything more than 5 feet in front of you, much less the balloons floating above you that you need to target to progress, and there are frequent platforming sections where you need to ink the platform in front of you, squid to the end, and jump to the next platform. With motion controls, these are the embodiment of frustration, as I had to attempt a simple jump more than a few times, and it just isn't fun. Ultimately, I decided the game wasn't worth my precious time and returned it. Your tolerance for motion controls may vary, but if you hate them like I do, you're not going to like this game. 2/5 stars. Expand

Whoever has the longest reach and/or most powerful weapon wins. ZZZzzz. This means that Splatoon 2 is now like Super Smash Bros. and Fortnite except it isn't Super Smash Bros. or Fortnite, and no one needs another Super Smash Bros. or Fortnite.

That said, there's still something to love. It's a visually fun game, and if you're playing with friends and chatting - coordinating your efforts - it's a lot of fun. If you're playing on your own, not so much.

Though never fun in real life, spilling ink all around is even more fun in Splatoon 2 than it was in the first game. Teaming up with your squid friends has never been better. But even though some weird Nintendo elements can drag the fun to a stall, everywhere that Splatoon 2 shines makes it a deserving heir to the original.
