I absolutely did not enjoy Soul Searching. Navigating on the boat was tedious and frustrating. When your character (err unrecognizable box of pixels?) is on land, the goals and tasks of the game overall are very unclear.

Most depressive game I have ever encountered. The rating system actually fails to account for something like this, as this is more like an assault on the psychological health of the player than a game, it practically has negative value. An honest rating would be -5 as far as I am concerned since the amount of time I spent playing and actually finishing it was not the only amount of time IMost depressive game I have ever encountered. Avoid even if someone offers you money to play it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Got the game on a sale, and for that it's OK. The visuals are OK, the islands have different themes, but still feel kinda the same at heart, almost every one has a food and water place, a shop with the exact same items, a bar and a handful of people, there isn't much to the characters, and the character creator seems kinda pointless. The soundtrack seems nice, but I played a good bit without sound. I visited every big Island I could see on my map, upgraded my boat every time, then I wanted to proceed to what seemed to be the last island with the "???", as I approached it, I got completely destroyed by 3 or 4 dragons, and I couldn't do anything about it, died and respawned on a boat about 3 levels under mine. I just kinda lost interest after that, because I didn't see a way to get past those dragons, if they were a scripted event. If there is a spell that can beat them on one of the little unnamed islands all the way at the beginning, cool, I'm sure as hell not going all the way back there. The story and world didn't seem that worth it from what I got to see, imagine just a handful of things that are wrong with real life, like really basic stuff, put that into an island setting and add a good lack of subtlety. That paired with some kinda bland and samey characters and you basically got the gist of the story and world. The boat navigation is cool, the survival mechanics are more of an annoyance. Overall rather meh. Expand

This is the most depressing game I have ever played.
When you customize your character, you have the options to select which gender you are attracted to (which has ZERO impact on the game whatsoever.)
The game starts off good when you buy a boat and catch fish, but the game takes a dark turn when you reach more islands. You’ll encounter people who want to commit suicide, abusers, etc,.

At one point I encountered a bartender that encouraged me to drink my problems away. I decided to stop the game at that point and check out the episodes in the extras.
Before the episode started, the game told me (and I quote) “This episode will be told from the prospective of a Straight White Male”. okay?
The first episode you just toss a basketball around while two characters are talking about wether or not a girl likes them or not.
One episode makes you listen to the ramblings of someone who is high and thinks the world is meaningless. After 20 minutes, get an option. “Do you agree?” “Yes” or “No”. If you select Yes, you get a “oh sorry you feel that way” and the episode ends.
The last episode makes you feel like you’re on an LCD trip. You encounter characters just like the main game, but everything happens randomly. Every character had some weird thing to say. “I think our current president is dumb”, “Everyone who doesn’t have a religion is an idiot”.
At that point I had to wonder what audience this game was intended for, was it for people who have depression? Because this game made me want to die.
Don’t buy this game, don’t even get it for free.

Soul Searching is short, sharp and symbolic. It amalgamates excellent audio with engaging scenery to provide the perfect backdrop for an exploratory, non-combative adventure, leaving some reflecting on life long after the credits roll, and others failing to see what it was all for.
