Easily the definitive versions of the classic Sonic games. Between the widescreen support, improvements, and new features, I can't recommend these enough. These tracks are clearly unfinished, and Carnival Night particularly hurts from this. There's also going to be some bugs here and there, but it's almost all minor stuff, and shouldn't ruin you're experience, though I do hope they get patched in the future. Expand

I buyed this game for the Switch just for see if the framerate or glitchy was slower like in Colors Ultimate but it wasn't and play these classic games portably is a big deal
This collection contains 4 cool games, with the retroengine they look smooth especially Sonic 2 special stages

Anyone who’s played these games in the past know how great looking they are, especially for the Genesis hardware. However, Im also judging this based on the presentation from the 3D models shown in the menu as well as the cutscenes and… well, let’s just say Ive never been THAT big a fan of the hedgehog engine for the classic sonic models. Still, this game is pretty good looking all the same.

    Sound: 7/10
An expected drop in score is with the sound department. While the music in these classic titles are fantastic, with some of these being flat out bangers, the choice to replace the MJ music with the prototype tracks is something that required a bit of delicate care to reproduce; Something Im sad to say Jun Senoue didn’t seem to execute successfully IMO. It isn’t a flat out disaster, but when you hear the original quality of these tracks, its sadly inferior when its all said and done.

The audio mixing with the Sonic CD remastered cutscenes is also jarring, with the gain twice as loud as what you’d experience in the game.

Still, these issues are sprinkled throughout the majority of the presentation and for me, the claimed degrade in quality of S3&K’s music was something I personally couldn’t hear myself.

    Gameplay: 8/10
Gameplay is mostly as good as I recall on the originial hardware. Keyword: Mostly. There was one issue I encountered personally, but I haven’t seen anyone else mention, and that’s activating Super Sonic in story mode. I tried both pressing the jump button twice as well as pressing the designated button to activate it, but it flat out refused to execute when I had 50 rings 90% of the times. If I mashed the buttons enough after 10-20 seconds, it’d FINALLY activate.

Again, I dont know how isolated this issue is, but it was extremely annoying all the same. Had I not encountered this, I’d give this a more solid score.

    Story: 10/10
The fleshed out story provided via the new cutscenes made for this compilation are absolute perfection, bar none. These scenes not only give the opportunity to flesh out what occurred in between these titles, as well as during the end of each game, but also gives an opportunity to let these classic versions of the characters shine. The animation department should give themselves several pats on the back because this is something 8 year old me would have appreciated back when I first played these games

Difficulty: 3/5 (Normal for Story Mode or a Casual Run) 5/5 (Classic Mode with 100% attempt)
Oh man. You know, when I played through Story Mode, I was reminded as to why I never attempted to get all the chaos emeralds, time stones or super emeralds in any of these games. Flat out, if you want to get the true ending for these games, you’re going to need to work HARD on the special stages to get them. Im pretty sure I dropped easily around 100 coins to retry all the stages I had to play altogether just to get the true ending for 1, 2 and 3K (Thats NOT including the Time Stones in CD which I just flat out decided to forget about after a while).

This game is the pure definition of “Angry Video Game Nerd” material. Not that it’s so bad it plays bad, but that it’s so bad yet its still good. You’ll love this game but prepare to pull your hair out.

… otherwise if you dont care and just want to beat the game? You’re not gonna really come across many moments like this… except for MAYBE a few boss battles (Im looking at you Death Egg Robot)

    BOTTOM LINE:
    8/10

The Sonic franchise means a lot to me. When I was 7, I wanted a Genesis purely to play Sonic 1 and 2, but had to settle for a Game Gear for a year or so before I finally got my hands on those titles. So saying the classic franchise is a part of my childhood is certainly hitting it right.

However, unlike some of my fellow Sonic fans who hold the classic series in high regards and demand absolute perfection with any ports, I don’t ask much from these things. Gimme some extra content to the side like Sonic Jam, give the game some easier options for the sake of getting that easy ending if you so desire, be as faithful as you possibly can, stuff like that. In that regard, this game delivers on the basic needs of what I want.

However, the few quirks this game does have makes it hard for me to say this is EXACTLY what I wanted, especially since they are pretty glaring distractions. Maybe a year or two after this review, this title will have a patch that’ll fix all these issues for consoles. But for now, I can still give this a recommendation… but MAYBE when it goes on sale.

Widescreen support. Looks great. Classic sonic games, which in my opinion are the best of the franchise and hold up to this day. Infinite respawns in anniversary modes, which I like as it allows for learning levels and continuing forward. Plays great docked and in handheld mode. In my opinion, switch is the best place for this because of the versatility.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I recently bought the game on a Nintendo Switch. I thought looking at the Internet that the game is not playable, that there are a lot of bugs. But it's not, it's a very good collection of games. Many modes: mirror, normal, boss, festive. You can earn coins without donation. These coins can be used to get cool content in the museum. Games with Genesis abruptly moved. Of course there were bug 1! but it does not change anything. I liked the game so much for sure I stamp 10. Expand

It is a great classic game and all, but asking 40 for it is just a bit too much. There is literally nothing here to justify this price.

Grew up playing the trilogy + Knuckles. I like the whole bundle. Wide screen + being able to play other characters in other games is neat. Also the jump + hold jump to spin dash when hitting the ground is back (from Mania).

Museum is alight. Kind of wish they included the other master system versions of the games when unlocking stuff. There's a few bugs here and there, but it's all

The whole Michael Jackson drama with stage 4-5-6 from Sonic 3 where the songs had to be rewritten is so disappointing. I know they used the beta version of the tunes but really? Couldn't they have used like a remix or do any better than the picked replacement tracks? They sound super generic unlike the rest of the tracks (stage 1-2-3 and S&K)...

Overall, pretty decent HD package. Does leave a little to be desired but I'm really enjoying it.

Going into this game, I was a bit scared that it was going to be bad. SEGA have a bad history with Sonic remakes and just Sonic in-general recently. Forces was a boring and short game, Colors Ultimate was horrible, and Frontiers looks boring, but you know what? This was a breath of fresh air. More proof that they should prioritize more 2D Sonic games, it's clearly their strong suit. ThisGoing into this game, I was a bit scared that it was going to be bad. This was a breath of fresh air. More proof that they should prioritize more 2D Sonic games, it's clearly their strong suit. This game pretty much features Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles all in one game. You can either play them in the original state with borders or in widescreen, remastered. I really love how they fixed the games, adjusting the piss-poor and hard difficulty the originals had by giving you infinite lives. There's also Coins now, you get them a lot and you can use them to retry special stages (god bless that), or use them to unlock stuff in the Museum. There's also a Boss Rush option and even a Mirror Mode once you beat the game. You can play the games separately or in a complete Story Mode. You can tell some thought was put into this unlike most remakes. The games themselves are good, though they can be VERY frustrating at times, even with the lighter difficulty. The soundtrack isn't exactly remade, but it's still a Sonic Soundtrack so it doesn't miss. I also don't think this game fits its price at all, even if it is 40 dollars. I paid 45 for the Deluxe Edition and there wasn't much to be honest, it literally felt the same as the Standard Edition. It should be reduced by 10-20 and that'll definitely be a fair price. Still a solid game if you're a fan of Classic Sonic and you want something new and good from SEGA. Expand

A conflicting compilation of Sonic games that does plenty right in remastering some of the blue hedgehog's classic Mega Drive hits, but lets everyone down with unnecessary money-grabbing DLC, while not offering anywhere near the amount of content that really should be here in terms of the Sonic series' vast history. Still with bugs to fix, time will tell if Sonic Origins becomes a respectable overall package, but it will suffice for the more casual fan after a bigger price drop.

A mix of all we love of Sonic but not so inspired. It takes the classic style of the hedgehog and bring some upgrades to the gameplay. Fans will love Sonic Origins, but maybe they would want more content.

Sonic Origins is a compilation that allows us to recall the origins of the blue hedgehog with interesting new content. However, nostalgia may not be enough to convince some players. Even so, it is still a highly recommended title.
