Sonic frontiers was a fun romp, and the first 3D sonic I've actually enjoyed in a long time. The only issue I have with the game is pop in, but it's not bad enough to seriously impact the score for me.

Sonic Frontiers definitely feels like an evolution of the series. And it really works. The worlds are absolutely massive and a blast to explore, Sonic controls so much smoother now and I actually feel like I have control over him unlike the previous boost games where he would just sorta have a mind of his own sometimes and go off in one direction. The combat is also surprisingly fun. It can get a little mashy at points but it’s still a blast to pull of some of the moves in the game. But where the combat really shines is in the boss fights. Every boss battle in this game feels like it could be the final boss and I love it. It really goes to show how high the stakes are in this game. Oh, and they also come with some banger music tracks. Shoutout to Unbreakable, it is so good. Now, while I do love this game, and could gush about it till the heat death of the universe, I would be remiss not to mention its flaws as well.

For starters, the cyberspace levels. Not only are 90% of them reused levels, level themes, level layouts etc., but they are just not fun to play. Sonic slips around like he’s ice skating with skates made of butter in the cyberspace sections. The pop-in is also a big problem. It’s unfortunately very noticeable. Another thing I don’t like about this game are the puzzles… kinda. A lot of them are very fun and entertaining, but there is one type of puzzle that absolutely makes no sense no matter what I do. The ball puzzle. For those who don’t know, the ball puzzles involve you whacking a gravity defying orb into a hoop or hoops. But they are broken and terrible

Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a fantastic game with a few issues that can either be ironed out in a patch or in an update for the game.

Played for around four hours today and I can’t put it down runs really stable in handheld mode. Does suffer from pop-in and can be blurry. This didn’t stop me loving this game. So far a really solid release for the switch.

I have very deliberately avoided reviews and opinions on this game. I knew there would be people going out of their way to find problems and I didn't want my experience to be influenced. My enjoyment is just that much more for it.

The game is a lot of fun. It's crazy fun to go zipping around, sliding rails and pinballing through the air. There's plenty to find and tasks to accomplish along the way. I really enjoy the combat system and the further you play, the cooler the moves get. The guardians are really fun to take on. Each with a different strategy to figure out. And just as you get used to the guardians on one island, you get a whole new set to figure out on the next island. Puzzles aren't the most difficult I've seen in a game but they're still fun.
The cyber levels are a nice change of pace. Especially the more traditional Sonic style levels.

Stop complaining that the Switch version isn't the same as others. I assume that of most Switch games and really that's one of the trade-offs I'm happy to make. It's like this is the first Switch version they've played. Sure they said there was very little difference but if you really thought the Switch version was going to be the same as the PS5 version then I've got some lively magic beans to sell you. I mean really, were you really expecting it to be the same?

Is it perfect? No. But I'm over 10 hours into it and I've really not noticed anything significant.
I honestly think that there are many people who only play games to find what's wrong with them. Analysing every little thing. If all you're looking for are problems then all you'll find are problems. I personally choose to just have fun.

My advice. Ignore the reviews and just play the game. It's a whole lot of fun.

Cyberspace is great, tho sonic is very slow in them and a bit tight, however it is understandable why they slowed sonic down as you have 4 objectives to complete with each level. Though they should make him faster in the next game. I will say another issue with cyberspace is that they have reused level themes that have come back way to many times (Greenhill and chemical plant) and I just wish that, if they don't want to give us a 100% original themes, they should at least bring back different old themes like the aquarium park (sonic colours) and kingdom valley.(sonic 2006) and jungle joyride (Sonic unleashed). This isn't a big issues tho and cyberspace is still really fun and a huge step up from Sonic forces. The soundtrack in frontiers is amazing and the more serious story tome is a huge breath of fresh air from the childish, light hearted stories of the past 12 years. It's also amazing to finally have some character development for all the characters as that another thing that's been missing since unleashed. Ian Flynn did a great job with the writing and they should definitely keep him employed.
Overall this game is a near masterpiece and it has so much replayability that you will never get bored. There is issues with pop in and that needs to be fixed, but it doesn't dampen the amazing experience that is Sonic frontiers. I love this game, and why it isn't as good as Sonic unleashed, it's still a good one and I 100% recommend it.
P.S. If anyone says to you that this game was inspired or had stuff taken from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, don't believe them, bc they are lying. It is nothing like it. The open world is inspired by sonic 2006, sonic adventure 1 and sonic boom rise of lyric. And the portals are inspired by the level portals in sonic 2006 and sonic unleashed.

-The gameplay couldn't be better, sonic in the platforming moments is no longer as slippery as in previous installments and it feels really good, the combat is entertaining and I like how it evolves becoming complex little by little.

-Level design, the open world design is entertaining and effective. Personally the world seems to me a mixture of the one of zelda botw but adapted to sonic and elements of the saga.

-Story: I haven't finished it but I can tell you that when the moment is serious the characters act according to their personality and not according to the personality of a clown like in forces for example.

    BAD POINTS
-Popping is present and noticeable, not as much as in the trailers but it's there even with the graphics at MAX. This could be solved with an option to adjust the draw distance.

Railings, platforming, challenges, and enemies are everywhere and you won't go 1 minute without finding a spring that bounces you to another fun area. The gameplay is very fun though and movement feels extremely good except sometimes in cyberspace. The combat is amazing and though it can be repetitive, I never truly found it annoying. I wish there was more reason to do it however as there aren't many skills you can unlock so combat with basic enemies eventually becomes pointless when you unlock all your skills. The enemies also feel a bit weak and I wish they were more challenging. The skills also feel a bit overpowered and feels as though I can spam them and easily win a fight. Now for the real boss fights, they are the best in the entire series but sadly you can't replay them without starting a new save file and that is the most disappointing part of this game. Story is great as well but I want this to be a spoiler free review. Go in as blind as possible. Amazing games with issues that are extremely overshadowed by the positives here. A few annoying puzzles, bad intro level, and a few bugs. Everything else is pretty great and I recommend this to sonic fans as well as first timers, and any video game fans in general. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is a game that was well worth the wait for me. Throughout the years, games felt like they were afraid of their own lore and story, but Frontiers’ story feels like a love letter to long time sonic fans. Finally modern sonic can have a game with no Classic sonic to ride on. The characters all are wonderful to talk to and we get amazing interactions that we haven’t seen in decades. Sage and Doctor Eggman also have their great moments too. The story is extremely captivating and I’m so glad Ian Flynn was able to have his hand in this game. There were moments in the story where I got emotional, specifically with Tails’ interaction with Sonic. The entire time I was smiling from these dialogue exchanges with characters. The story really does make Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy seem like long time friends. The open-zone in general is decently size and offers a lot of room for play. I enjoyed finding puzzles to fill out the map and adding the vast amount of platforms to the level to further explore the islands. It was a blast running through and thinking of quick ways to traverse the land. I did have some issues when it came to controls. Often times, when sonic was in “attack mode”, the island map would not let me open it until sonic was a good distance away from the enemy. Some areas, specifically in tails’ island, had a lot of 2D in the open-zone and was really jarring for me. I ended up trying to avoid as much of the 2D in platforms his island. It just felt restrictive when it comes to the open-zone islands. You also have the ability to upgrade sonic in this game. Giving you a good taste of some RPG upgrading elements. I’ve always appreciated it when we are able to upgrade Sonics abilities. I think moving forward, this should definitely stay as a element for Sonic. Cyber space, while I did enjoy it to a degree, was the worst part for me in this game. The controls feel a lot different than it does in the open world. While not a deal breaker, it does take getting used to. The controls for me felt like it needed a bit more fine-tuning. I am not exactly sure how to explain it, but it just feels off. A few levels were enjoyable- but I think it’s about time modern sonic steps away from the constant reoccurring of Greenhill and chemical plant. Some original levels would be nice. But I do appreciated trying to change up the level layouts. I got a lot of joy recognizing layouts from the adventure games.

Boss fights are a joy to go through. I like how the game doesn’t hold your hand and try to tell you how to beat them. You have to figure it out. That I appreciate as a fan of video games. The cinematic super sonic fights are nothing short than AMAZING. The music, the attitude sonic has fighting them, and the tone is beautifully done. Really let’s sonic shine as the hero he is. The music for Frontiers is some of the best I’ve heard since Sonic Unleashed. Not to say the other games music was lacking, but Frontiers really did make such an impactful and good soundtrack that complimented the game so well. I’m Here, Vandalize, and One Way Dream are amazing songs. Hearing the games’ theme during the final boss fight was so pleasing to hear. Titan boss fight music is also something to experience when you play the game. I will say though, the final boss leaves a lot to be desired. Compared to the Titan fights, I was expecting more.

Bigs fishing in this game made me love fishing in gaming again. More big is definitely a huge plus. Overall, I’d give the game a solid 9. It has become one of my top 5 favorite sonic games. It has its problems, but the positives are so strong in this game. I highly recommend it to anyone, new and old players.

This is the game that finally pushed me to do so, so take that for what you will. This review will be a tad long, no spoilers but going into the most major details about the game itself. I do not exaggerate when I say this just might be the best 3D Sonic game. The sense of speeding around the "Open Zone" is quite unique, and amazingly fun. Sonic's handling has never been better, especially because it's fully customizable via some settings and is freely togglable at any time. Even while boosting, he corners like a dream. The areas are well designed with Sonic in mind and the sense of progression and gameplay is very good.

The game isn't perfect, no game ever is. I must admit that there is considerable Pop-in when running around the islands. I personally couldn't care less about it but it does bother some people. There aren't as many unique islands as everyone previously thought, and there is a lot of reused assets both from past games in the series and from within the game itself between the various areas. I didn't mind so much but it was a bit disappointing. Finally, the traditional linear Sonic gameplay via the Cyberspace levels are not great. Some are pretty fun to speedrun, and taking shortcuts to find the fastest route to the end is actually really great, as it should be in all Sonic games. However, some of the Cyberspace levels are not very well designed. Furthermore, Sonic controls similar to how he did in Sonic Forces when in Cyberspace: just serviceable at best, stiff and a tad clunky at worst. The handling adjustments aren't used for Cyberspace, so keep that in mind. Some animations in cutscenes are also a tad stiff looking. Not a gamebreaker, but not something to brag about.

This game has more good things going for it than bad, though. I'm very happy to say that the combat is excellent. It has an apparently very high skill ceiling, especially when used in conjunction with the Drop Dash which makes its return from Sonic Mania. Enemies are very fun to fight, especially after unlocking moves from the skill tree, which can be used with command inputs, making the combat have some great depth. The main general gameplay is a high-speed, "Open Zone" platformer-ish collectathon. On paper, the level design and collectathon aspect sound like a chore but in practice it's actually, genuinely very fun. The story and writing are the best they've been since Sonic and the Black Knight, which is to say it's really good. The music is more synthy and electronic than ever, and is actually quite good as expected of a Sonic game. The game's music and combat really shines in the climactic, cinematic Boss Battles. I won't go into too much detail because I believe it is something that everyone needs to experience themselves firsthand. I will say they are without a doubt the greatest boss fights in the series. The music goes so freaking hard, and mixed with the enhanced combat used in the Boss Battle segments, makes them a real treat, and some of the greatest gameplay segments in the series as a whole. Seriously, you are doing yourself a disservice by not playing them. Truly a revolutionary experience for the Sonic series.

Overall an excellent game well worth your time. This is probably the most fun I've had with a Sonic game since Sonic Mania. The best story and writing since Unleashed and Black Knight. The best linear gameplay since Generations. The best handling since Lego Dimensions' Sonic World (yes, Lego Dimensions has the best 3D Sonic handling, go play it and see for yourself) At almost every major gameplay point I had a huge grin on my face. Truly an amazing gaming experience. There are issues, as there is with every game. But they aren't gamebreaking or problematic. Sonic Frontiers is wholly a great game.

Sonic Frontiers is a brave experiment that struggles to express its intentions while still committing many of its series' 3D sins. But if you're able to commit to learning its idiosyncrasies, you'll discover a fun, addictive journey unlike any in Sonic's past. [Issue #64 – March/April 2023, p. 71]

Sonic Frontiers tried so hard to bring new elements to the game that it ended up forgetting to put more of the personality of its own franchise. However, they managed to create a dynamic, captivating and fast game - as good as any other in the Sonic franchise. It's the kind of game where time passes like lightning, blue lightning.

Sonic Frontiers deserves credit for being a true departure from previous series installments. The open-zone structure is a great concept that frees the developers up to experiment with Sonic’s speed and abilities in new ways. Where the game comes up short is in its stale rehashing of classic stages, a control setup that could stand to be simplified, and performance woes that suck players out of the gameplay experience. With plenty of DLC and patches on the way, hopefully Frontiers can become a better version of what came out at launch. In the interim, it’s a buggy affair that entertains and frustrates in equal measures.
