Dropped it after a few hours of game. Hope this is the last Sonic open world because this clearly isn't a good nor funny idea: combat is boring, enemies are boring, open world environment is boring, open world mechanics are not working well, 2 times out of 5 you'll fall without even knowing why, and the list goes on.

Sonic Frontiers is the WORST Sonic game ever made.
There's no freedom in this open world game, cyberspace is just copying and pasting previous Sonic games, and Sonic is janky.
SEGA doesn't know how to make video games anymore.

And while Frontiers is far from perfect, it's a really great way to have a more open Sonic game. I was afraid that it would feel too empty, but luckily the only emptiness is in the way the game is meant to feel empty. The combat is really satisfying and Sonic feels so good to move around. Not perfect, as there is jankiness to it, but it's still overall satisfying to control Sonic in the open areas. The stages don't feel the best to control, but they are doable. I am so glad that the 2D and 3D levels are separated. None of this randomly going into 2D sections in 3D levels. Plus the levels don't last that long, so they aren't as irritating as some of the Boost Formula levels in past games. The story is also very well written for the most part. It's still got that Sonic-ish writing where it doesn't always come out the best, but it's still great overall. The Switch version is kind of like playing the PSP version of a PS2 game or the PS Vita version of a PS3 game; it's obviously downgraded in many aspects, but it's still very playable and fun and great for on the go. Frontiers is one of the best Sonic games I've played. Expand

I own this game for both Switch and Xbox, and while the Switch version is easily the weaker port, the game is still nearly as fun as it is on Xbox. Would have liked to have seen better optimisation in this version, but good nonetheless.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I love how this game boils down to just a few things:
    - Run around without reason
    - Go "Oooh what's that?"
    - Go there
    - Do the thing
    - Repeat until you're somehow at the end of the island smacking titan ass after 4-5 hours of getting distracted by small platforming challenges, puzzles and treasure spots.

Yeah this game ain't for everyone but it's at least worth a try.

I had been buying Sonic Frontier at 29 December 2022 and the game still playable. The worst experience of the game is every 15 minutes, you should rest your eye for 5 minutes if you play it on switch Oled or connect it to the TV. The reason is because the Graphic of this Sonic game was worst more then 90% of others switch games out there. Cyberspace is great, tho sonic is very slow in them and a bit tight, however it is understandable why they slowed sonic down as you have 4 objectives to complete with each level. Though they should make him faster in the next game. I will say another issue with cyberspace is that they have reused level themes that have come back way to many times (Greenhill and chemical plant) and I just wish that, if they don't want to give us a 100% original themes, they should at least bring back different old themes like the aquarium park (sonic colours) and kingdom valley.(sonic 2006) and jungle joyride (Sonic unleashed). This isn't a big issues tho and cyberspace is still really fun and a huge step up from Sonic forces. The soundtrack in frontiers is amazing and the more serious story tome is a huge breath of fresh air from the childish, light hearted stories of the past 12 years. It's also amazing to finally have some character development for all the characters as that another thing that's been missing since unleashed. Ian Flynn did a great job with the writing and they should definitely keep him employed.
Overall this game is a near masterpiece and it has so much replayability that you will never get bored. There is issues with pop in and that needs to be fixed, but it doesn't dampen the amazing experience that is Sonic frontiers. I love this game, and why it isn't as good as Sonic unleashed, it's still a good one and I 100% recommend it.
P.S. If anyone says to you that this game was inspired or had stuff taken from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, don't believe them, bc they are lying. It is nothing like it. The open world is inspired by sonic 2006, sonic adventure 1 and sonic boom rise of lyric. And the portals are inspired by the level portals in sonic 2006 and sonic unleashed.

Sonic Frontiers, a game many have been awaiting. Upon exploring the "Open-Zone", one is greeted with Breath of the Wild vibes. The piano keys fluttering about a lush display show the intention of the team. Rushing in the fields is exhilarating; one of the best things the game has to offer. At each point you'll find objects, items, and challenges. It feels "open," despite walls, and edges that inhibit you. The best way to describe these areas is the given "Open-Zone". Each serves as a hub for many acts (or "Cyberspace" levels) necessary for advancement.
Yet, although there are many puzzles and areas to explore, none of the challenges last long enough to be memorable. Any Sonic fan of recent entries will be disappointed in lack of provocation. Challenges are easy, and going along one will find not much difficulty curve. It can be entirely completed in 20-25 hours or so, which is unacceptable for the game's price. For how much effort poured into this title, it would be nice if it had more backbone.
In other areas Frontiers excels, providing nice tunes and pretty graphics. Music has great variation; one may be tranquilized by the orchestrations of the field, or hit it hard with the rockers that exemplify the Boss fights. It's not ugly to look at. Models are on point, and whether playing a pre-rendered movie, or in-game graphics, everything is well-animated. Voice acting is adequate, providing a comic style not dissimilar from a Saturday morning cartoon.
However, unlike a good cartoon, many scenes are boring. What makes them so is abundance. Mercifully, all can be skipped if desired. To be frank, one won't have more or less an experience doing so. The story is typically convoluted as Sonic is expected to be. Sonic is greeted by this mysterious android girl that shows herself to prophesize his doom, and in the same breath talk about how fascinatingly impressive he is. Meanwhile, friends (Amy, Tails, Knuckles) are trapped in a strange digital dimension, and he is dutifully bound to saving them and figuring out why they are there in the first place. Ensuing events involve quips, boring conversations, and references to other games that will be senseless unless one has played all of them.
Those that have played Sonic titles recently will be happy to discover, in terms of control, it feels much like a Sonic title. The ring dash, allowing you to instantly fly through a line of rings, returns. Typical moves one would expect are here. Sonic can homing attack, stomp, dash, or fly about in a flurry of blue light. There are a number of special moves unlocked as you progress. Most feel integral to combat and offer more from the regular bounce, homing attack, stomp. Button choices can feel awkward at first, but come together in action. Sonic controls wonderfully. A caveat is being forced into a side-scrolling screen lock when undesirable, and occasional camera issues that plague most 3D platformers. It sometimes gets stuck behind objects and proves annoying. The issue is minor though.
It's unfortunate the challenge doesn't match the capability of the controls. In many instances levels don't feel difficult, and completing them leaves an empty feeling. Each worth about 20 minutes or less of play if completing every challenge. All uninspired recreations of few stages from past games. Would be nice to see recreations of different levels or original levels and if they were longer.
These are the most disappointing aspects of the game: the longevity and lack of challenge. Vast as the world is and as much as there is to do, rewards are the same, and each idea repeated. You can wander the map easily obtaining needed items and objects, or you can just play a fishing game for them. There are many things that have too many ways to be obtained. Specificity is desirable, and perhaps more challenging. Objects are completely placed at random, diminishing reward.
Speaking of lack of reward, finding each Zones' Chaos Emeralds will unlock the area's Boss. They can be easily defeated with some slight maneuvers and button mashing. It's a good thing the music is there to back up these big Boss encounters; it may be easy to forget them otherwise. At least they all look impressive. Some of the game's "Guardians" (miniboss fights) are honestly more memorable but grow boring also.
Sonic Frontiers is exemplary of what the series is capable of, and what it has become. The effort of the production shines through but just not bright enough to make up for some of the game's faults.

This game is nothing but a frustration, and given the build up the team gave for so long, I really don't see any upper management intelligence in doing anything kinder than dividing them into other groups who actually know what a good game is, vs this entire team that acted almost giddy about their game only to find it's a Christmas stocking Santa vomited all his cookies into. The only thing I can complain about is the final boss and the secret final boss (unlocked by defeating the final boss on hard mode). The final boss seem lackluster and unfinished even parts of the story at the end were changed and you can tell also the 2 islands before this boss are part of the first island you could not access before so when it says 5 islands it is technically just 3. As for the secret final boss it is just a harder version of the hacking mini game (which is like a spaceship shoot 'em up game) and the final boss design is just a moon. Yes you saw that right a moon. Other than these complaints the game is really good and most of the story is good. The Titian boss fights are amazing probably the best part of the game other than the fantastic music. The cyber space level themes are over used and the controls don't feel right as they have just taken the controls from the open zone area however you do get used to it so other than that they are good too. So with that I recommend you pick it up and if you're a sonic fan I highly recommend.

Every area is the same: collect this, now collect that, talk to this person now collect some more, often times requiring you to even replay “levels” to get a better score and get more collectibles needed to progress. The only way I can compare this process, without spoiling, is to point at games like Overcooked where you need to get a better “score” in a stage before you can progress further. Not only does this get old quick but the level designs for the “open world” segments (effectively just a big playground over world to get to one level to the next) are nonsensically organized. It’s like the level designers just threw a bunch of springs and rails all over the place because they didn’t know what else to do, or how else to make it feel like a Sonic game while banking off the success of Breath of the Wild. The islands remind me of a 10 year old (or a very drunken person) trying to make a Tony Hawk Pro Skater custom skate park. The story is lackluster at best (but who plays Sonic for the story anyhow) and yet I found myself yearning for the next cutscene just so I could take a break from the arduous task of treasure hunting. Probably the most frustrating thing about Sonic Frontiers, however, is the horrible controls (at least on Switch). It’s like the console can’t keep up with the game’s speed; unresponding to jump commands, veering left when you hold down straight, your normal jump doesn’t seem sufficient to make most platforms but the air dash is too pronounced leading you straight off the edge. There’s even a penalty for going too fast (in a freakin Sonic game) where you’ll fly off the map and sometimes end up dying. Not too mention the map doesn’t fully render until you’re close enough to an object leaving you scratching your head how getting to certain quest markers is even possible, or not even seeing platforms your supposed to land on (flying through the air) until you’re just about to land. This game feels like an uncooked prototype of a “could have been” open-world Sonic game that nobody playtested and the designers were like “ehhh it’s good enough.” I couldn’t wait until the end so I never had to touch it again. Gameplay gets rather repetitive and the final boss between Supreme and The End (which can be only fought in hard mode) are extremely disappointing when boss fights were one of this games strongest points. It’s pretty good though. Expand

This is a step up from previous sonic games. While the graphics and running of the game may not be the best on the switch version, the story entirely makes up for that. While even in the story there can be some questionable moments and loose ends, in the end this game succeeds at telling a great story.

The freedom to explore combined with huge Kaiju-like battles and a really engaging story makes this top of the food cagin when it comes to Sonic games. Some of the graphics look a bit blurry but what I have come to believe is they "glitchy" graphics just add to the story and it will all make sense when you play it. Have a blast and run fast!

Open zone is a nice concept by allowing Sonic to free roam, similar to Mario Odyssey. You explore different 3 big islands by running around, grinding rails, do some platforming, combat, or access the cyberspace levels - which are modern Sonic levels with boost linear stages. And the boss fight is undeniably the best part of the game.

As a Sonic fan, this has become one of my favourite 3D

As a Sonic fan, this has become one of my favourite 3D Sonic games. The way we can control our hedgehog in 3D in the smoothest ever, makes the game even more fun.

Story and gameplay wise, it's certainly a big improvement than the previous titles, hopefully this game will set as a new foundation for the future Sonic games, just like the first Sonic Adventure.

However, the switch version is noticeably downgrade in terms of visual and graphics. While the game runs perfectly fine, the visual can be still distracting.

The open-world design doesn't get tiresome thanks to Sonic's excellent speed (so long as you don't choose the play the game in "action mode" - "high-speed mode" is definitely how the game is intended to be played).

Oh, and the soundtrack is once again an absolute crowning achievement. Those boss themes are simply phenomenal.

The pop-in is frankly somewhat odd, but it's not as worse on Switch than other platforms as far as I could tell. And you stop noticing it after a while, since the distance is far enough that you've still got plenty of time to react.

Looking at it, I expected it to be a Sonic game where Sonic runs around in an open world filled with a bunch of floating rails, launch pads and springs floating around. That is exactly what it is, however I did not expect it to be as fun as it is.

The Switch version isn't the prettiest game, but overall performance is solid and framerate stays consistent even with Sonic blasting through

The Switch version isn't the prettiest game, but overall performance is solid and framerate stays consistent even with Sonic blasting through the world as quickly as he goes. There is some major pop in and the textures do get muddy in some sections on this version.

Load times are not bad and once it is loaded, fast-traveling or restarting a level is very quick which is great as you might need to restart to complete all tasks on a zone.

Characters are actually not obnoxious in this game which is very refreshing. They outstay their welcome and the relationship between Sonic and his friends works well here. There are also call backs to older titles for all the old school Sonic fans out there.

Sound, and music is solid for this game. Music ranges from light piano for environments, EDM, house, metal, lo-fi and more. It slaps. I really enjoy listening to the wide variety of sounds and music this game has to offer.

The low points for this title would be the camera and the way it sometimes messes up some of your jumps due to poor perspective. This is nothing new for Sonic fans but it has been worse in the past. Also some poor design choices with some of the zones you visit.

You may find yourself locked out of certain areas or regions because "You are not ready" despite the game telling you "Sonic is now free to roam and go where he likes."

Some moments are poorly conveyed as well. What to do and how one is to do it can be unclear at times. Many of the explanations given will also be menu screens as well.

Still this has been a fun title and I look forward to what Sonic Team has planned next as they have said that this title will be acting as a spring (get it? A spring, like in Sonic?) to titles in the future.

Definitely! For example the pop ins can be detracting, The ending feels half baked and Cyber-Space does not have the best controls.
But for everything it does wrong this game does 5 things right. I mean did you play the titan bosses? They are incredible. The music is amazing, the open zone is addicting even Cyber-Space is fun if you use little tricks like how the community calls it the homing cancel. To say this game is a step in the right direction would be an understatement and if you liked the storytelling of the adventure games then this is for you. If they use this as a blueprint and fix all the problems this game had (rushed ending, Cyber-Space controls, replay ability, floating platforms etc) then we might have the best sonic game ever made.

There is even an attempt to throw back at older games, a la Sonic Generation which I appreciated. There is work to do, since it would be hypocritical to think this game is flawless. I would have to argue there too few momentum during the running, and stopping is as simple as letting the thumbstick go. This steals some scene from the stomp, which could have taken that function of bringing the player to a screeching halt. I like the boost mechanic and how it is effectively an height gainer in the air, I just wish it would be a little more controllable at first, since Sonic tends to derail if the player dares to stray from the direction they are headed. I expected the graphic to be more tragic, but instead it works decent to me.
Regardless of that, the music is great the characters stopped to be 2 dimentional cardboard boxes, the story is genuinely interesting, I am getting adventure vibes all over and I am feeling excited for another game of Sonic after 10 years. Sonic is back, and Sonic is cool again. Good job Sega, now it's time to surpass yourselves once more. Take your time just like you did with this game and the movies and go at it, you have shown us that you can do it.

-The gameplay couldn't be better, sonic in the platforming moments is no longer as slippery as in previous installments and it feels really good, the combat is entertaining and I like how it evolves becoming complex little by little.

-Level design, the open world design is entertaining and effective. Personally the world seems to me a mixture of the one of zelda botw but adapted to sonic and elements of the saga.

-Story: I haven't finished it but I can tell you that when the moment is serious the characters act according to their personality and not according to the personality of a clown like in forces for example.

    BAD POINTS
-Popping is present and noticeable, not as much as in the trailers but it's there even with the graphics at MAX. This could be solved with an option to adjust the draw distance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers disappointed me unfortunately. I ignored the initial reviews and bought the game because it looked fun. And it sort of is but falls into the trap of feeling repetitive and not engaging.

I am on the second island (out of five, I think) and the gameplay loop has consisted of collecting 'memory fragments', keys from cyberspace levels (classic 3D sonic levels), and chaos emeralds (crystals?). My biggest problem is the collection of memory fragments, which advance the story. To do this, you complete the micro-stages that are scattered throughout the open world. However, they are often incredibly short and could consist of just traversing one grind rail. So I felt no sense of accomplishment (especially when you have to do this 40+ times on the first and second world) (edit: I'm up to 210 on the second world). Quite a lot of quick time events too (press Y to hit jump pads before falling, move the left stick quickly so you don't fall off a boss).

Sonic's new combat ability actually lets you (almost) skip the memory shard grind. His cyloop (runnning around in a circle) ability generates coins and memory tokens. This meant that I could run around in circles next to the character I needed to talk to and not have to traverse the world. I know that I'm not supposed to do this but why give me the option? It appears that you can skip a large portion of the game by just spinning around for a couple of minutes. I realised that the game wasn't for me when I started doing that rather than traversing the open world.

The world itself is rather uninspired too. Whilst the desolate landscape of Breath of the Wild made sense, why is it so desolate in Frontiers? And why are there grind rails everywhere? I'm honestly not sure. Something to do with cyberspace bleeding into the 'real' world? (I have skipped most cutscenes so it may be explained there.) The tone too is really weird, running around as a blue hedgehog whilst melancholic music plays.

Cyberspace levels are where I had the most fun. But, on Switch, the post processing effects added to make them 'cyberspacey' made it hard for me to see what was happening when paired with the Switch version's lower resolution. In handheld mode, everything looks very blurry. Performance has been ok by my standards so far, though (no obvious slowdown but some people may be more sensitive than me).

Overall, I wish the game were more tailored and focused more on stages rather than bite sized chunks in the open world. It feels like I have to do a lot of busy work in order to 'get to the fun bit'. I wish it were more whimsical and fantastical like Super Mario Odyssey. It's a weird mish mash of things that look fun, are kinda fun to play, but don't combine well to create something great.

So what's the hype all about ? The game doesn't even smell of any polish like generations, it doesn't look as beautiful as colors or unleashed for a ps5 game. it doesn't have a good story , just a pile of cringe like a 12 year old wrote this going through an emo phase. Animation is hilarious lmao

Finally, a worthy successor to Sonic Adventure DX has arrived. A game that takes elements from other games in the series and from other games and creates a combination that works. It avsorbs you from the first moment, waiting for any freetime you have to race around Starfall Islands. It needs a patch, yes, but the game is fully playable and enjoyable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now to give some background information. I am a modern sonic fan. If it weren't for Mania releasing, Sonic Generations would be my number 1 favorite Sonic game as I am a big fan of the boost styled sonic games. Forces proved to be so much of a dissapointment to me that it easily became the worst game I have ever played. I really hoped that Sonic Team would bring their A-game back and strive to make an steller video game. They succeeded, but not quite. At first I absolutely did not like the game, but I grew to like it more during my second playthrough. The reason for my low score however, is due to the fact that the things that made me hate this game during my first playthrough were still present in my second playthrough.

Now this game can easily be an 8 or even a 9 with a couple of hefty patches, but Sega for some reason decided to make some of the world's dumbest decisions imanginable. Firstly, Sonic moves quite slow. Now I get why as one would need to do so, but I am talking about cyberspace Sonic. Cyberspace can easily be the best part of the game as, while mostly containing stages as bad and short as Forces, the cyberspace level designs were pretty good, even though they steal a lot from the previous games. For some reason, instead of giving Sonic the power boost that he gets upon reaching max rings, they give him his unempowered boost instead, making Sonic SUPER slow. Not only that, but they gave Sonic magnetic shoes as jumping makes Sonic lose ALL of his momentum. That last point even applies to the open-zones where now you can't jump boost over canyons, you have to find a higher spot and just boost off it. It is only worse with Sonic's air boost being the worst I've ever seen. This is the same team that made Forces' superb airboost so I do not understand why they won't take that and put it in this game? Instead we got a flimsy air boost that doesn't get refilled after touching a spring and only acts as a sort-of third jump which most of the time gets you killed. The combat itself is decent, with the exception of that one sonic boom beam thing that is easily spammable and the parry NOT being a parry, but the enemies you fight are absolutely not. By the second island, the basic enemies get this annoying shield cylinder move that they can activate whenever. This mostly happens while in the middle of a combo, making your combo stop dead in its track so you can draw a circle around it. It only gets worse on the fifth island when that move gets spikes. Some of the minibosses are really bad, like Asura and all of its bugginess, Shark being ONLY slow quick time events, Squid and Fortress being the literal same boss with the only difference being that one is one rails, and that weird gigantic boss on the second island whos name I can't remember. That thing was quite agrivating with its fireballs moving from rail to rail. These problems I can slightly ignore, with the exception of cyberspace, but what I ABSOLUTELY cannot ignore is the idiotic forced 2D sections. This is an open world game and freedom of movement is a key component of open world games, like how climbing in BOTW made that game so much more fun! To make specific segments that lock Sonic from moving forward and back is BEYOND stupid. It only gets worse on the third island where accidentally touching a spring can push Sonic into an unescapable 2D section. This is beyond aggrivating and the third island is FILLED with them. This is not a minor annoyance, this may as well be a major bug in the game that needs to be patched out. If Sega is afraid of players being unable to properly control Sonic in those specific sections, they can easily solve it with D-Pad support. This brings up another issue. The things that fill these islands are not particularly fun. Most of these "challenges" are really easy and simplistic. There are also grind rails everywhere. It didn't feel like a bunch of Sonic stuff lying around. It felt more like a bunch of automated sections were floating above the land. It would be appreciated if they cut back on the dash pannels and let the player take control. It is clear that Sonic Team wants to take a step forward, but they clearly hesitated in doing so.

Now I have to end this review short due to the character limit, so I apologize that this review is purely negative. I have good things to say about it. This game is so close to being amazing, but I still see the common Sonic Team issues that were present in Sonic Forces. Now some of these problems can be fixed with an update, hence why it is a 4, but if Sonic Team refuses to do so, then I no longer have any hope for Sonic Team. It is clear to me that all of the people who made our beloved Sonic games are gone and the new workers have A LOT of training to do. It really shames me to put this so low as I hope I could call this game the game Forces should have been, but I can't. I really hope one day we could get a Sonic game that rivals Mario.

Sonic Frontiers has been a major blast of fun and thrilling gameplay and storytelling. For the first open world Sonic game it does its job well. The characters feel like a true return to form with their personalities and the story isn't an "Oh boy what wacky situation will we get into now?" kind of deal. It's just good fun all around.

This is a mega fun game. There’s a big noticeable effort by the creators to make something big, and that can be seen in the story, the character writing and the enemies and of course the big environments. Feels very good to control, have not experienced any lag issues or glitches playing on the switch, and am surprised by how smoothly it runs. Marvellous job.

Sonic Frontiers is a really fun Game. It makes you feel like Sonic, IGN would say that. The Combat is fun, the Speed is very fast at the end of the game, Story is very good, and Open Zones are alright. The Pop In is a big problem, and some missions on the Open Zones are very borng. But Sonic Frontiers is a great step in the future of Sonics Gameplay!

Sonic Frontiers is a brave experiment that struggles to express its intentions while still committing many of its series' 3D sins. But if you're able to commit to learning its idiosyncrasies, you'll discover a fun, addictive journey unlike any in Sonic's past. [Issue #64 – March/April 2023, p. 71]

Sonic Frontiers tried so hard to bring new elements to the game that it ended up forgetting to put more of the personality of its own franchise. However, they managed to create a dynamic, captivating and fast game - as good as any other in the Sonic franchise. It's the kind of game where time passes like lightning, blue lightning.

Sonic Frontiers deserves credit for being a true departure from previous series installments. The open-zone structure is a great concept that frees the developers up to experiment with Sonic’s speed and abilities in new ways. Where the game comes up short is in its stale rehashing of classic stages, a control setup that could stand to be simplified, and performance woes that suck players out of the gameplay experience. With plenty of DLC and patches on the way, hopefully Frontiers can become a better version of what came out at launch. In the interim, it’s a buggy affair that entertains and frustrates in equal measures.
