This is the best Sonic game since Sonic Generations. The 2010s were a bit of a...I don't want to say "dark age" overall for Sonic, but it felt more like "wasted potential". And while Frontiers is far from perfect, it's a really great way to have a more open Sonic game. And while Frontiers is far from perfect, it's a really great way to have a more open Sonic game. I was afraid that it would feel too empty, but luckily the only emptiness is in the way the game is meant to feel empty. The combat is really satisfying and Sonic feels so good to move around. Not perfect, as there is jankiness to it, but it's still overall satisfying to control Sonic in the open areas. The stages don't feel the best to control, but they are doable. I am so glad that the 2D and 3D levels are separated. None of this randomly going into 2D sections in 3D levels. Plus the levels don't last that long, so they aren't as irritating as some of the Boost Formula levels in past games. The story is also very well written for the most part. It's still got that Sonic-ish writing where it doesn't always come out the best, but it's still great overall. The Switch version is kind of like playing the PSP version of a PS2 game or the PS Vita version of a PS3 game; it's obviously downgraded in many aspects, but it's still very playable and fun and great for on the go. Frontiers is one of the best Sonic games I've played. Expand

I own this game for both Switch and Xbox, and while the Switch version is easily the weaker port, the game is still nearly as fun as it is on Xbox. Would have liked to have seen better optimisation in this version, but good nonetheless.

I love how this game boils down to just a few things:
    - Run around without reason
    - Go "Oooh what's that?"
    - Go there
    - Do the thing
    - Repeat until you're somehow at the end of the island smacking titan ass after 4-5 hours of getting distracted by small platforming challenges, puzzles and treasure spots.

Yeah this game ain't for everyone but it's at least worth a try.

Cyberspace is great, tho sonic is very slow in them and a bit tight, however it is understandable why they slowed sonic down as you have 4 objectives to complete with each level. Though they should make him faster in the next game. I will say another issue with cyberspace is that they have reused level themes that have come back way to many times (Greenhill and chemical plant) and I just wish that, if they don't want to give us a 100% original themes, they should at least bring back different old themes like the aquarium park (sonic colours) and kingdom valley.(sonic 2006) and jungle joyride (Sonic unleashed). This isn't a big issues tho and cyberspace is still really fun and a huge step up from Sonic forces. The soundtrack in frontiers is amazing and the more serious story tome is a huge breath of fresh air from the childish, light hearted stories of the past 12 years. It's also amazing to finally have some character development for all the characters as that another thing that's been missing since unleashed. Ian Flynn did a great job with the writing and they should definitely keep him employed.
Overall this game is a near masterpiece and it has so much replayability that you will never get bored. There is issues with pop in and that needs to be fixed, but it doesn't dampen the amazing experience that is Sonic frontiers. I love this game, and why it isn't as good as Sonic unleashed, it's still a good one and I 100% recommend it.
P.S. If anyone says to you that this game was inspired or had stuff taken from the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, don't believe them, bc they are lying. It is nothing like it. The open world is inspired by sonic 2006, sonic adventure 1 and sonic boom rise of lyric. And the portals are inspired by the level portals in sonic 2006 and sonic unleashed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of I do recommend this game and please get it on a different console or pc if you can as it runs better.
The only thing I can complain about is the final boss and the secret final boss (unlocked by defeating the final boss on hard mode). The final boss seem lackluster and unfinished even parts of the story at the end were changed and you can tell also the 2 islands before this boss are part of the first island you could not access before so when it says 5 islands it is technically just 3. As for the secret final boss it is just a harder version of the hacking mini game (which is like a spaceship shoot 'em up game) and the final boss design is just a moon. Yes you saw that right a moon. Other than these complaints the game is really good and most of the story is good. The Titian boss fights are amazing probably the best part of the game other than the fantastic music. The cyber space level themes are over used and the controls don't feel right as they have just taken the controls from the open zone area however you do get used to it so other than that they are good too. So with that I recommend you pick it up and if you're a sonic fan I highly recommend.

My main issue is the pop-in which is worse here on switch. Gameplay gets rather repetitive and the final boss between Supreme and The End (which can be only fought in hard mode) are extremely disappointing when boss fights were one of this games strongest points. This is a step up from previous sonic games. While the graphics and running of the game may not be the best on the switch version, the story entirely makes up for that. Open zone is a nice concept by allowing Sonic to free roam, similar to Mario Odyssey. You explore different 3 big islands by running around, grinding rails, do some platforming, combat, or access the cyberspace levels - which are modern Sonic levels with boost linear stages. And the boss fight is undeniably the best part of the game.

As a Sonic fan, this has become one of my favourite 3D

As a Sonic fan, this has become one of my favourite 3D Sonic games. The way we can control our hedgehog in 3D in the smoothest ever, makes the game even more fun.

Story and gameplay wise, it's certainly a big improvement than the previous titles, hopefully this game will set as a new foundation for the future Sonic games, just like the first Sonic Adventure.

However, the switch version is noticeably downgrade in terms of visual and graphics. While the game runs perfectly fine, the visual can be still distracting.

Oh, and the soundtrack is once again an absolute crowning achievement. Those boss themes are simply phenomenal.

The pop-in is frankly somewhat odd, but it's not as worse on Switch than other platforms as far as I could tell. And you stop noticing it after a while, since the distance is far enough that you've still got plenty of time to react.

Looking at it, I expected it to be a Sonic game where Sonic runs around in an open world filled with a bunch of floating rails, launch pads and springs floating around. That is exactly what it is, however I did not expect it to be as fun as it is.

The Switch version isn't the prettiest game, but overall performance is solid and framerate stays consistent even with Sonic blasting through the world as quickly as he goes. There is some major pop in and the textures do get muddy in some sections on this version.

Load times are not bad and once it is loaded, fast-traveling or restarting a level is very quick which is great as you might need to restart to complete all tasks on a zone.

Characters are actually not obnoxious in this game which is very refreshing. They outstay their welcome and the relationship between Sonic and his friends works well here. There are also call backs to older titles for all the old school Sonic fans out there.

Sound, and music is solid for this game. Music ranges from light piano for environments, EDM, house, metal, lo-fi and more. It slaps. I really enjoy listening to the wide variety of sounds and music this game has to offer.

The low points for this title would be the camera and the way it sometimes messes up some of your jumps due to poor perspective. This is nothing new for Sonic fans but it has been worse in the past. Also some poor design choices with some of the zones you visit.

You may find yourself locked out of certain areas or regions because "You are not ready" despite the game telling you "Sonic is now free to roam and go where he likes."

Some moments are poorly conveyed as well. What to do and how one is to do it can be unclear at times. Many of the explanations given will also be menu screens as well.

Still this has been a fun title and I look forward to what Sonic Team has planned next as they have said that this title will be acting as a spring (get it? A spring, like in Sonic?) to titles in the future.

Definitely! For example the pop ins can be detracting, The ending feels half baked and Cyber-Space does not have the best controls.
But for everything it does wrong this game does 5 things right. I mean did you play the titan bosses? They are incredible. The music is amazing, the open zone is addicting even Cyber-Space is fun if you use little tricks like how the community calls it the homing cancel. To say this game is a step in the right direction would be an understatement and if you liked the storytelling of the adventure games then this is for you. If they use this as a blueprint and fix all the problems this game had (rushed ending, Cyber-Space controls, replay ability, floating platforms etc) then we might have the best sonic game ever made.

This is the directions I would like the Sonic franchise to head into. Good and consistent writing overall, bossfights fun to play around, a whole world to explore, traverse, and collect object in, and the sky is the limit. There is even an attempt to throw back at older games, a la Sonic Generation which I appreciated. There is even an attempt to throw back at older games, a la Sonic Generation which I appreciated. There is work to do, since it would be hypocritical to think this game is flawless. I would have to argue there too few momentum during the running, and stopping is as simple as letting the thumbstick go. This steals some scene from the stomp, which could have taken that function of bringing the player to a screeching halt. I like the boost mechanic and how it is effectively an height gainer in the air, I just wish it would be a little more controllable at first, since Sonic tends to derail if the player dares to stray from the direction they are headed. I expected the graphic to be more tragic, but instead it works decent to me.
Regardless of that, the music is great the characters stopped to be 2 dimentional cardboard boxes, the story is genuinely interesting, I am getting adventure vibes all over and I am feeling excited for another game of Sonic after 10 years. Sonic is back, and Sonic is cool again. Good job Sega, now it's time to surpass yourselves once more. Take your time just like you did with this game and the movies and go at it, you have shown us that you can do it.

-Sonic acts as he should but without losing his personality, in every sentence (unless the moment is of extreme tension) has his little joke that finally are no longer as they were in forces. but also has that serious touch and concern.

-The gameplay couldn't be better, sonic in the platforming moments is no longer as slippery as in previous installments and it feels really good, the combat is entertaining and I like how it evolves becoming complex little by little.

-Level design, the open world design is entertaining and effective. Personally the world seems to me a mixture of the one of zelda botw but adapted to sonic and elements of the saga.

-Story: I haven't finished it but I can tell you that when the moment is serious the characters act according to their personality and not according to the personality of a clown like in forces for example.

    BAD POINTS
-Popping is present and noticeable, not as much as in the trailers but it's there even with the graphics at MAX. This could be solved with an option to adjust the draw distance.

I enjoyed the combo system for fights and I look forward to what Sonic Team can do in the future with it and the "Open Zone" idea with sonic in the future. I usually rarely ever review anything. But because of Dunkey’s toxic bs fanbase. I feel like I have to add my review to this game.

This game is genuinely fun to play. If you are a sonic fan or a causal gamer that likes open world games. Then most likely you will love this game. This is the first time you get to control Sonic’s high speed in a open world. This is also the first time in a mainline Sonic game you get a skill tree system. It’s not too complex which is great again for casual gamers and the moves aren’t difficult to understand. But using them in combat to juggle enemies is extremely satisfying it reminds of Devil May Cry’s combat system in away. Super Sonic is back and this time he’s fighting massive titans that actually feel like a threat while epic music plays in the background. Also for a game aimed at a younger audience that adds limitations in what can be added to the story. The story is surprisingly really good and you get to connect with the characters and see them develop even further in the franchise. So great job Sega we need more of this.

But with all that said. There is 1 thing I would love to see improving in the game. Are the object pop ins. At the start it will be weird seeing them but over time you end up getting use to it.

Overall this game is really fun and you’ll definitely end up putting hours in this game feeling like as if minutes went by. Do I recommend it 100%.

(Also the true rating for this game is above 8.8 before the YouTuber Dunkey’s fanbase review bombed it).

Starting out with the positives throughout my time in the Starfall Islands, I enjoyed the varied combat, engaging cutscenes, and the choice of what you want I wanted to do in the open world before continuing the story. Eventually leading up to epic boss fights at the end of each island that are a highlight of the game. While not for every enemy in the game almost all has a unique style and approach tailored to Sonic's move-set that made them engaging. If you enjoy exploring an open environment with intuitive combat, quick movement making the world satisfying to explore, and a story exploring the wonder and mystery of an ancient civilization's impact on these islands then this game is for you! While the majority of my experience with this game is positive, it is also important to view the negative aspects of the game to truly get a more unbiased view. On the switch, the pop-in is especially noticeable for the environments and on rare occasions took me out of the immersion. Furthermore in handheld mode, many of the textures are blurry and seem to be downgraded compared to docked mode. A couple of enemies also were annoying to fight but that was mainly for Asura (Only on the first Island.) and a water enemy later on that took me a while to figure out how to not drown inside. Lastly, the controls for cyberspace were difficult to get used to and definitely felt a little rougher than I was expecting especially for the quickstep. Overall my experience with this game was very positive and I am still playing it even after I beat this story mode. Hopefully, after this review, you can create an opinion on this game and decide if it was right for you. As for me I really enjoyed this game and want SEGA to continue the franchise with the open zone formula, but polish and improve the fomula even further to create the next generation of Sonic games! This is the game that finally pushed me to do so, so take that for what you will. This review will be a tad long, no spoilers but going into the most major details about the game itself. I do not exaggerate when I say this just might be the best 3D Sonic game. The sense of speeding around the "Open Zone" is quite unique, and amazingly fun. Sonic's handling has never been better, especially because it's fully customizable via some settings and is freely togglable at any time. Even while boosting, he corners like a dream. The areas are well designed with Sonic in mind and the sense of progression and gameplay is very good.

The game isn't perfect, no game ever is. I must admit that there is considerable Pop-in when running around the islands. I personally couldn't care less about it but it does bother some people. There aren't as many unique islands as everyone previously thought, and there is a lot of reused assets both from past games in the series and from within the game itself between the various areas. I didn't mind so much but it was a bit disappointing. Finally, the traditional linear Sonic gameplay via the Cyberspace levels are not great. Some are pretty fun to speedrun, and taking shortcuts to find the fastest route to the end is actually really great, as it should be in all Sonic games. However, some of the Cyberspace levels are not very well designed. Furthermore, Sonic controls similar to how he did in Sonic Forces when in Cyberspace: just serviceable at best, stiff and a tad clunky at worst. The handling adjustments aren't used for Cyberspace, so keep that in mind. Some animations in cutscenes are also a tad stiff looking. Not a gamebreaker, but not something to brag about.

This game has more good things going for it than bad, though. I'm very happy to say that the combat is excellent. It has an apparently very high skill ceiling, especially when used in conjunction with the Drop Dash which makes its return from Sonic Mania. Enemies are very fun to fight, especially after unlocking moves from the skill tree, which can be used with command inputs, making the combat have some great depth. The main general gameplay is a high-speed, "Open Zone" platformer-ish collectathon. On paper, the level design and collectathon aspect sound like a chore but in practice it's actually, genuinely very fun. The story and writing are the best they've been since Sonic and the Black Knight, which is to say it's really good. The music is more synthy and electronic than ever, and is actually quite good as expected of a Sonic game. The game's music and combat really shines in the climactic, cinematic Boss Battles. I won't go into too much detail because I believe it is something that everyone needs to experience themselves firsthand. I will say they are without a doubt the greatest boss fights in the series. The music goes so freaking hard, and mixed with the enhanced combat used in the Boss Battle segments, makes them a real treat, and some of the greatest gameplay segments in the series as a whole. Seriously, you are doing yourself a disservice by not playing them. Truly a revolutionary experience for the Sonic series.

Overall an excellent game well worth your time. This is probably the most fun I've had with a Sonic game since Sonic Mania. The best story and writing since Unleashed and Black Knight. The best linear gameplay since Generations. The best handling since Lego Dimensions' Sonic World (yes, Lego Dimensions has the best 3D Sonic handling, go play it and see for yourself) At almost every major gameplay point I had a huge grin on my face. Truly an amazing gaming experience. There are issues, as there is with every game. But they aren't gamebreaking or problematic. Sonic Frontiers is wholly a great game.

The gameplay, music, bosses and open world design are great, and the plot is the most interesting one since Sonic Unleashed, and also the estetic of the open zones remembered me playing Sonic Adventure and Unleashed.
It lacks on the final boss, which is dissapointing, and sometimes upgrading the habilities tends to be really easy when you find out that big the cat and the cyloop give you skill points. And sometimes the cyberspce phisics tends to be weird to control, but you can get used to.
In general is a really good game, one of the best 3D games, but far from perfect.

One of the best 3D Sonic games in a long time. Loads of new ideas and an exciting new playstyle that I think works well after years of seemingly stagnating to one formula.

Very fun game. A little rough around the edges in ways that could have been fixed with another month of polishing off but doesn't detract from the overall experience. Easily the best Sonic game we've had in over a decade and a promising sign of things to come.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is a game that was well worth the wait for me. Throughout the years, games felt like they were afraid of their own lore and story, but Frontiers’ story feels like a love letter to long time sonic fans. Finally modern sonic can have a game with no Classic sonic to ride on. The characters all are wonderful to talk to and we get amazing interactions that we haven’t seen in decades. Sage and Doctor Eggman also have their great moments too. The story is extremely captivating and I’m so glad Ian Flynn was able to have his hand in this game. There were moments in the story where I got emotional, specifically with Tails’ interaction with Sonic. The entire time I was smiling from these dialogue exchanges with characters. The story really does make Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy seem like long time friends. The open-zone in general is decently size and offers a lot of room for play. I enjoyed finding puzzles to fill out the map and adding the vast amount of platforms to the level to further explore the islands. It was a blast running through and thinking of quick ways to traverse the land. I did have some issues when it came to controls. Often times, when sonic was in “attack mode”, the island map would not let me open it until sonic was a good distance away from the enemy. Some areas, specifically in tails’ island, had a lot of 2D in the open-zone and was really jarring for me. I ended up trying to avoid as much of the 2D in platforms his island. It just felt restrictive when it comes to the open-zone islands. You also have the ability to upgrade sonic in this game. Giving you a good taste of some RPG upgrading elements. I’ve always appreciated it when we are able to upgrade Sonics abilities. I think moving forward, this should definitely stay as a element for Sonic. Cyber space, while I did enjoy it to a degree, was the worst part for me in this game. The controls feel a lot different than it does in the open world. While not a deal breaker, it does take getting used to. The controls for me felt like it needed a bit more fine-tuning. I am not exactly sure how to explain it, but it just feels off. A few levels were enjoyable- but I think it’s about time modern sonic steps away from the constant reoccurring of Greenhill and chemical plant. Some original levels would be nice. But I do appreciated trying to change up the level layouts. I got a lot of joy recognizing layouts from the adventure games.

Boss fights are a joy to go through. I like how the game doesn’t hold your hand and try to tell you how to beat them. You have to figure it out. That I appreciate as a fan of video games. The cinematic super sonic fights are nothing short than AMAZING. The music, the attitude sonic has fighting them, and the tone is beautifully done. Really let’s sonic shine as the hero he is. The music for Frontiers is some of the best I’ve heard since Sonic Unleashed. Not to say the other games music was lacking, but Frontiers really did make such an impactful and good soundtrack that complimented the game so well. I’m Here, Vandalize, and One Way Dream are amazing songs. Hearing the games’ theme during the final boss fight was so pleasing to hear. Titan boss fight music is also something to experience when you play the game. I will say though, the final boss leaves a lot to be desired. Compared to the Titan fights, I was expecting more.

Bigs fishing in this game made me love fishing in gaming again. More big is definitely a huge plus. Overall, I’d give the game a solid 9. It has become one of my top 5 favorite sonic games. It has its problems, but the positives are so strong in this game. I highly recommend it to anyone, new and old players.

Solid game. I was a bit scared hearing the switch version ran worse than every other version but playing the game shows it barely inhibits the experience. The game itself is phenomenal, the combat is responsive, and the story is really well done. Definitely props to sonic team for this game.

The music and story are a perfect 10!
Now I know the game can feel clunky and slow, but it was way better than 06, where it had way more glitches then it should have. The 3rd Titan boss was the coolest and the sont Find your Flame just made this boss battle more interesting to fight! I believe that the team needs more people though so that the next Sonic game can be just as good if not better than this one! And don't listen to Dunkey, he is the most dumbest YouTube Gamer I have seen, that is why his persona is a donkey

Sonic Frontiers is a brave experiment that struggles to express its intentions while still committing many of its series' 3D sins. But if you're able to commit to learning its idiosyncrasies, you'll discover a fun, addictive journey unlike any in Sonic's past. [Issue #64 – March/April 2023, p. 71]

Sonic Frontiers tried so hard to bring new elements to the game that it ended up forgetting to put more of the personality of its own franchise. However, they managed to create a dynamic, captivating and fast game - as good as any other in the Sonic franchise. It's the kind of game where time passes like lightning, blue lightning.

Sonic Frontiers deserves credit for being a true departure from previous series installments. The open-zone structure is a great concept that frees the developers up to experiment with Sonic’s speed and abilities in new ways. Where the game comes up short is in its stale rehashing of classic stages, a control setup that could stand to be simplified, and performance woes that suck players out of the gameplay experience. With plenty of DLC and patches on the way, hopefully Frontiers can become a better version of what came out at launch. In the interim, it’s a buggy affair that entertains and frustrates in equal measures.
