You can also combat and fight a lot of unique enemies and bosses, and unlock a lot of new combat moves and skills, at the skill tree!

You can also upgrade Sonic, you can upgrade his strength, speed, ring capacity and defense!

The story is the best out of the whole franchise, and the voice acting is very good, Roger Craig Smith did an amazing job as the voice of Sonic!

The music in this game is incredible and it's the best music in the entire franchise!

The Super Sonic fights against the Titans were amazing and some of the best fights in a video game!

Thank you Takashi Izuka and ESPECIALLY Morio Kishimoto who created this MASTERPEICE!
The 5 years wait was definitely worth it.

And the Super Sonic battles, uff, Sonic is officially back! 9/10

Probably the most fun I've had in a Sonic game since Generations. It can feel janky at points, but on the whole this was a joyous experience. The exploration, combat, and story were all rather excellent. OST was superb as always. THIS is what Sonic needed after Lost World and Forces, and it works wonders.

Haven't had this much fun with a Sonic game since Sonic Unleashed, and as a fan of the Adventure era (more 00s era) It was as if it was tailored for us. Needless to say the VAs performance was absolutely amazing, they really brought the characters to life more than they ever had in the past 10 years. Sonic Frontiers is one of my top favorite 3D Sonic games. It's a very ambitious title that aims to take the series in a new direction with its open zone gameplay. It's a very ambitious title that aims to take the series in a new direction with its open zone gameplay. I love the amount of things there are to do in the islands in terms of challenges, mini-bosses and collecting a variety of trinkets. Because of the gameplay gearing more towards that of an action role-playing game, Sonic is a lot more dynamic and versatile in terms of combat and his overall movement. The combat system works very well in a sense that it is simple, yet still engaging in terms of the amount of moves Sonic can perform and how you can skillfully utilize them when facing off against enemies. The boss fights in terms of the Titans are action-packed and full of spectacle, as the vocal tracks add so much energy and adrenaline to their respective boss fight. They end up being some of my favorite bosses in Sonic history. The few issues I have with this game boil down to the cyberspace levels and Sonic's overall control in those levels and the pop-in. I simply found the most fun in exploring the islands and can easily take or leave the cyberspace levels.
In terms of the music, it's simply legendary, for a lack of a better word. Frontiers has a variety of tracks that range from various genres and ends up being one of the largest soundtracks in a Sonic game.
The story and dialogue are also very good since Ian Flynn, known for his work in the IDW Sonic comic book series, played a part in the writing process.
All-in-all, Frontiers is a breath of fresh air for the series and does an excellent job at establishing a foundation for future games to build upon. I highly recommend this game to both fans and newcomers.

Railings, platforming, challenges, and enemies are everywhere and you won't go 1 minute without finding a spring that bounces you to another fun area. The gameplay is very fun though and movement feels extremely good except sometimes in cyberspace. The combat is amazing and though it can be repetitive, I never truly found it annoying. I wish there was more reason to do it however as there aren't many skills you can unlock so combat with basic enemies eventually becomes pointless when you unlock all your skills. The enemies also feel a bit weak and I wish they were more challenging. The skills also feel a bit overpowered and feels as though I can spam them and easily win a fight. Now for the real boss fights, they are the best in the entire series but sadly you can't replay them without starting a new save file and that is the most disappointing part of this game. Story is great as well but I want this to be a spoiler free review. Go in as blind as possible. Amazing games with issues that are extremely overshadowed by the positives here. A few annoying puzzles, bad intro level, and a few bugs. Everything else is pretty great and I recommend this to sonic fans as well as first timers, and any video game fans in general. Expand

“Uh, Sonic should’ve died in 2D”

    What about Mario then?

    “Same thing for Mario”

No. After 10 years of cringe-jokes, bad writing we finally got a game where Sonic takes itself seriously again. It was never meant for kids. It was meant for everyone. Yeah the movies did him dirty (I’m not saying the movies are bad, they are REALLY good. Thing is, they made Sonic character for kids. It make sense since he’s still a kid there but then everyone will think he is. When he’s not.)

“Image being a kid, he would be bored playing this game”

Are you that kid? Stop self projecting. Why we have to treat Kids like they are stupid? Super Paper Mario was 14 years ago. Do I really have to explain what I’m saying? That game aged like fine wine. Bowser’s Inside Story is another one. And this will do the same because it’s good. It’s so good. Cyberspace is the “eh, okay” of the game, I see the potential, it can be improved. And here I thought I would hate this game, I hate open worlds and I don’t like Zelda at all, but I respect it because that’s just me, Zelda makes good games. Wait, silly me, this is an “Open Zone” game (coping? Maybe) but well, I liked it. Maybe that’s why it worked. I recommend it to you all.

Starting out with the positives throughout my time in the Starfall Islands, I enjoyed the varied combat, engaging cutscenes, and the choice of what you want I wanted to do in the open world before continuing the story. Eventually leading up to epic boss fights at the end of each island that are a highlight of the game. While not for every enemy in the game almost all has a unique style and approach tailored to Sonic's move-set that made them engaging. If you enjoy exploring an open environment with intuitive combat, quick movement making the world satisfying to explore, and a story exploring the wonder and mystery of an ancient civilization's impact on these islands then this game is for you! While the majority of my experience with this game is positive, it is also important to view the negative aspects of the game to truly get a more unbiased view. On the switch, the pop-in is especially noticeable for the environments and on rare occasions took me out of the immersion. Furthermore in handheld mode, many of the textures are blurry and seem to be downgraded compared to docked mode. A couple of enemies also were annoying to fight but that was mainly for Asura (Only on the first Island.) and a water enemy later on that took me a while to figure out how to not drown inside. Lastly, the controls for cyberspace were difficult to get used to and definitely felt a little rougher than I was expecting especially for the quickstep. Overall my experience with this game was very positive and I am still playing it even after I beat this story mode. Hopefully, after this review, you can create an opinion on this game and decide if it was right for you. As for me I really enjoyed this game and want SEGA to continue the franchise with the open zone formula, but polish and improve the fomula even further to create the next generation of Sonic games! The gameplay, music, bosses and open world design are great, and the plot is the most interesting one since Sonic Unleashed, and also the estetic of the open zones remembered me playing Sonic Adventure and Unleashed.
It lacks on the final boss, which is dissapointing, and sometimes upgrading the habilities tends to be really easy when you find out that big the cat and the cyloop give you skill points. And sometimes the cyberspce phisics tends to be weird to control, but you can get used to.
In general is a really good game, one of the best 3D games, but far from perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of I do recommend this game and please get it on a different console or pc if you can as it runs better.
The only thing I can complain about is the final boss and the secret final boss (unlocked by defeating the final boss on hard mode). The final boss seem lackluster and unfinished even parts of the story at the end were changed and you can tell also the 2 islands before this boss are part of the first island you could not access before so when it says 5 islands it is technically just 3. As for the secret final boss it is just a harder version of the hacking mini game (which is like a spaceship shoot 'em up game) and the final boss design is just a moon. Yes you saw that right a moon. Other than these complaints the game is really good and most of the story is good. The Titian boss fights are amazing probably the best part of the game other than the fantastic music. The cyber space level themes are over used and the controls don't feel right as they have just taken the controls from the open zone area however you do get used to it so other than that they are good too. So with that I recommend you pick it up and if you're a sonic fan I highly recommend.

The mysterious story is really compelling and has some of the highest highs in the whole series, definitely in the top 5. The villain is great and has lots of character. Some parts reference back and add to lore established in previous games. The voice acting is great and so is the dialogue.

There are 5 open zones, but only 3 are really unique. Each of these 3 main islands do have sub biomes though (dessert island: beach, oasis, mountains, savanna, caves). The open zones are huge and make great use of the move set that has been given. You can boost up hills and be sent flying if you want to make the best use of speed.

Cyberspace makes for a quick distraction from the story and open zones. They play mostly like stages from the boost games, except they don’t feel “boost to win” thanks to it being nerfed. They’re a lot of fun to replay and speed run for your personal best times. Just be prepared to see the same stage theme a lot.

Each island ends with a mega boss battle which could easily pass off as the final boss of any other Sonic game. They’re epic showdowns with epic vocal tracks playing over them. Unfortunately you need to reply the game in order to redo these fights (hopefully just for now).

The Nintendo Switch port runs really well too, I haven’t noticed any frame dips or freezes. Pop in is noticeable, but doesn’t at all wreck the experience (and is on every platform). There are a few other small issues, but they aren’t at all game breaking nor memorable.

This game is exactly what the series needed, and leaves the future looking bright. This is what a lot of fans have been wanting, so it’s great that Sonic Team finally got to make what they wanted without much intervention from higher ups. If you have liked any Sonic game before you will very likely love Sonic Frontiers. It’s a 9.5/10 for me, but an 8 all together.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is a game that was well worth the wait for me. Throughout the years, games felt like they were afraid of their own lore and story, but Frontiers’ story feels like a love letter to long time sonic fans. Finally modern sonic can have a game with no Classic sonic to ride on. The characters all are wonderful to talk to and we get amazing interactions that we haven’t seen in decades. Sage and Doctor Eggman also have their great moments too. The story is extremely captivating and I’m so glad Ian Flynn was able to have his hand in this game. There were moments in the story where I got emotional, specifically with Tails’ interaction with Sonic. The entire time I was smiling from these dialogue exchanges with characters. The story really does make Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy seem like long time friends. The open-zone in general is decently size and offers a lot of room for play. I enjoyed finding puzzles to fill out the map and adding the vast amount of platforms to the level to further explore the islands. It was a blast running through and thinking of quick ways to traverse the land. I did have some issues when it came to controls. Often times, when sonic was in “attack mode”, the island map would not let me open it until sonic was a good distance away from the enemy. Some areas, specifically in tails’ island, had a lot of 2D in the open-zone and was really jarring for me. I ended up trying to avoid as much of the 2D in platforms his island. It just felt restrictive when it comes to the open-zone islands. You also have the ability to upgrade sonic in this game. Giving you a good taste of some RPG upgrading elements. I’ve always appreciated it when we are able to upgrade Sonics abilities. I think moving forward, this should definitely stay as a element for Sonic. Cyber space, while I did enjoy it to a degree, was the worst part for me in this game. The controls feel a lot different than it does in the open world. While not a deal breaker, it does take getting used to. The controls for me felt like it needed a bit more fine-tuning. I am not exactly sure how to explain it, but it just feels off. A few levels were enjoyable- but I think it’s about time modern sonic steps away from the constant reoccurring of Greenhill and chemical plant. Some original levels would be nice. But I do appreciated trying to change up the level layouts. I got a lot of joy recognizing layouts from the adventure games.

Boss fights are a joy to go through. I like how the game doesn’t hold your hand and try to tell you how to beat them. You have to figure it out. That I appreciate as a fan of video games. The cinematic super sonic fights are nothing short than AMAZING. The music, the attitude sonic has fighting them, and the tone is beautifully done. Really let’s sonic shine as the hero he is. The music for Frontiers is some of the best I’ve heard since Sonic Unleashed. Not to say the other games music was lacking, but Frontiers really did make such an impactful and good soundtrack that complimented the game so well. I’m Here, Vandalize, and One Way Dream are amazing songs. Hearing the games’ theme during the final boss fight was so pleasing to hear. Titan boss fight music is also something to experience when you play the game. I will say though, the final boss leaves a lot to be desired. Compared to the Titan fights, I was expecting more.

Bigs fishing in this game made me love fishing in gaming again. More big is definitely a huge plus. Overall, I’d give the game a solid 9. It has become one of my top 5 favorite sonic games. It has its problems, but the positives are so strong in this game. I highly recommend it to anyone, new and old players.

The music and story are a perfect 10!
Now I know the game can feel clunky and slow, but it was way better than 06, where it had way more glitches then it should have. The 3rd Titan boss was the coolest and the sont Find your Flame just made this boss battle more interesting to fight! I believe that the team needs more people though so that the next Sonic game can be just as good if not better than this one! This game is genuinely fun to play. If you are a sonic fan or a causal gamer that likes open world games. Then most likely you will love this game. This is the first time you get to control Sonic’s high speed in a open world. This is also the first time in a mainline Sonic game you get a skill tree system. It’s not too complex which is great again for casual gamers and the moves aren’t difficult to understand. But using them in combat to juggle enemies is extremely satisfying it reminds of Devil May Cry’s combat system in away. Super Sonic is back and this time he’s fighting massive titans that actually feel like a threat while epic music plays in the background. Also for a game aimed at a younger audience that adds limitations in what can be added to the story. The story is surprisingly really good and you get to connect with the characters and see them develop even further in the franchise. So great job Sega we need more of this.

But with all that said. There is 1 thing I would love to see improving in the game. Are the object pop ins. At the start it will be weird seeing them but over time you end up getting use to it.

Overall this game is really fun and you’ll definitely end up putting hours in this game feeling like as if minutes went by. Do I recommend it 100%.

(Also the true rating for this game is above 8.8 before the YouTuber Dunkey’s fanbase review bombed it).

This is a mega fun game. There’s a big noticeable effort by the creators to make something big, and that can be seen in the story, the character writing and the enemies and of course the big environments. Feels very good to control, have not experienced any lag issues or glitches playing on the switch, and am surprised by how smoothly it runs. Marvellous job.

This is the directions I would like the Sonic franchise to head into. Good and consistent writing overall, bossfights fun to play around, a whole world to explore, traverse, and collect object in, and the sky is the limit. There is even an attempt to throw back at older games, a la Sonic Generation which I appreciated. There is work to do, since it would be hypocritical to think this game is flawless. I would have to argue there too few momentum during the running, and stopping is as simple as letting the thumbstick go. This steals some scene from the stomp, which could have taken that function of bringing the player to a screeching halt. I like the boost mechanic and how it is effectively an height gainer in the air, I just wish it would be a little more controllable at first, since Sonic tends to derail if the player dares to stray from the direction they are headed. I expected the graphic to be more tragic, but instead it works decent to me.
Regardless of that, the music is great the characters stopped to be 2 dimentional cardboard boxes, the story is genuinely interesting, I am getting adventure vibes all over and I am feeling excited for another game of Sonic after 10 years. Sonic is back, and Sonic is cool again. Good job Sega, now it's time to surpass yourselves once more. Take your time just like you did with this game and the movies and go at it, you have shown us that you can do it.

This is a step up from previous sonic games. While the graphics and running of the game may not be the best on the switch version, the story entirely makes up for that. While even in the story there can be some questionable moments and loose ends, in the end this game succeeds at telling a great story.

The combat is also surprisingly fun. It can get a little mashy at points but it’s still a blast to pull of some of the moves in the game. But where the combat really shines is in the boss fights. Every boss battle in this game feels like it could be the final boss and I love it. It really goes to show how high the stakes are in this game. Oh, and they also come with some banger music tracks. Shoutout to Unbreakable, it is so good. Now, while I do love this game, and could gush about it till the heat death of the universe, I would be remiss not to mention its flaws as well.

For starters, the cyberspace levels. Not only are 90% of them reused levels, level themes, level layouts etc., but they are just not fun to play. Sonic slips around like he’s ice skating with skates made of butter in the cyberspace sections. The pop-in is also a big problem. It’s unfortunately very noticeable. Another thing I don’t like about this game are the puzzles… kinda. A lot of them are very fun and entertaining, but there is one type of puzzle that absolutely makes no sense no matter what I do. The ball puzzle. For those who don’t know, the ball puzzles involve you whacking a gravity defying orb into a hoop or hoops. But they are broken and terrible

Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a fantastic game with a few issues that can either be ironed out in a patch or in an update for the game.

The game is a lot of fun. It's crazy fun to go zipping around, sliding rails and pinballing through the air. There's plenty to find and tasks to accomplish along the way. I really enjoy the combat system and the further you play, the cooler the moves get. The guardians are really fun to take on. Each with a different strategy to figure out. And just as you get used to the guardians on one island, you get a whole new set to figure out on the next island. Puzzles aren't the most difficult I've seen in a game but they're still fun.
The cyber levels are a nice change of pace. Especially the more traditional Sonic style levels.

Stop complaining that the Switch version isn't the same as others. I assume that of most Switch games and really that's one of the trade-offs I'm happy to make. It's like this is the first Switch version they've played. Sure they said there was very little difference but if you really thought the Switch version was going to be the same as the PS5 version then I've got some lively magic beans to sell you. I mean really, were you really expecting it to be the same?

Is it perfect? No. But I'm over 10 hours into it and I've really not noticed anything significant.
I honestly think that there are many people who only play games to find what's wrong with them. Analysing every little thing. If all you're looking for are problems then all you'll find are problems. I personally choose to just have fun.

My advice. Ignore the reviews and just play the game. It's a whole lot of fun.

However, everything else outshines it. The story is great with the help of Ian Flynn, known for the Sonic IDW comics. The voice acting is okay for the most part, Amy's in particular is wonderful. Character interactions are great and feel so much better than what we got in the last decade.

Exploring the open world is genuinely great. I always find myself exploring to see what else there is to find instead of going to the main goal. Last night, I said I'd only play for another hour. Before I knew it, I had played for 8. (Also I do not understand the complaints about the world feeling "empty", I think stuff being spaced out is necessary given how fast Sonic goes.)

But more or less, this game leaves a wonderful foundation for follow-ups. I cannot wait to see what the Sonic series brings in the future.

But, the game felt like it wasn't completely polished. The open-zones left me wanting more – more things to discover, hidden places to explore, and just generally a more interesting environment to look at.

There's also noticeable pop-in while running around the open-zone, especially on the Switch – which is an issue because you can't see what is in the nearby distance (such as platforms and enemies) until you move closer. It was frustrating and I'm not going to lie and say it didn't bug me.

The game on Switch visually doesn't look as great as it could, and that is a console capability issue (only 720p). If you have a PC I'd recommend to get Sonic Frontiers on Steam instead. Seriously, it looks like a completely different game in terms of visuals, and the pop-in is also less intrusive.

Overall, happy with my purchase – I clocked about 40 hours of gameplay. :)

The best thing about the game is the super sonic bossfights. Top tier and sega needs to make a boss rush. So that is my review on sonic frontiers and you should get the game and it is worth trying out. Expand

The only fun I had playing Sonic Frontiers was within the first 30 minutes of “oooh, ahhh” an “open world Sonic Game”…that quickly wore off when I realized nothing about Sonic Frontiers is “open world.” From getting locked in to 2-D segments (sometimes at the risk of failing a platform attempt; to realizing each of the five islands (which cannot be traversed seamlessly) are just a largeThe only fun I had playing Sonic Frontiers was within the first 30 minutes of “oooh, ahhh” an “open world Sonic Game”…that quickly wore off when I realized nothing about Sonic Frontiers is “open world.” From getting locked in to 2-D segments (sometimes at the risk of failing a platform attempt; to realizing each of the five islands (which cannot be traversed seamlessly) are just a large area to run around with very definitive borders and “shrines” that transport you to the true “levels” of the game - 2D track-based platforming levels; to even running into invisible walls that tell you you can’t go further; Sonic Frontiers is an extremely linear, HIGHLY repetitive game that gets old quick. Every area is the same: collect this, now collect that, talk to this person now collect some more, often times requiring you to even replay “levels” to get a better score and get more collectibles needed to progress. The only way I can compare this process, without spoiling, is to point at games like Overcooked where you need to get a better “score” in a stage before you can progress further. Not only does this get old quick but the level designs for the “open world” segments (effectively just a big playground over world to get to one level to the next) are nonsensically organized. It’s like the level designers just threw a bunch of springs and rails all over the place because they didn’t know what else to do, or how else to make it feel like a Sonic game while banking off the success of Breath of the Wild. The islands remind me of a 10 year old (or a very drunken person) trying to make a Tony Hawk Pro Skater custom skate park. The story is lackluster at best (but who plays Sonic for the story anyhow) and yet I found myself yearning for the next cutscene just so I could take a break from the arduous task of treasure hunting. Probably the most frustrating thing about Sonic Frontiers, however, is the horrible controls (at least on Switch). It’s like the console can’t keep up with the game’s speed; unresponding to jump commands, veering left when you hold down straight, your normal jump doesn’t seem sufficient to make most platforms but the air dash is too pronounced leading you straight off the edge. There’s even a penalty for going too fast (in a freakin Sonic game) where you’ll fly off the map and sometimes end up dying. Not too mention the map doesn’t fully render until you’re close enough to an object leaving you scratching your head how getting to certain quest markers is even possible, or not even seeing platforms your supposed to land on (flying through the air) until you’re just about to land. This game feels like an uncooked prototype of a “could have been” open-world Sonic game that nobody playtested and the designers were like “ehhh it’s good enough.” I couldn’t wait until the end so I never had to touch it again. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review isn't meant to be for hate or anything, just to air some gripes about the game, I had some fun with it, but going for 100 Percent by mapping out all the islands, S ranking all the cyberspace worlds, and even catching all the fish, it shows how Sonic Team can make an open world the right and wrong way. Running around is fun for the first island, but by the second one I was tired by the end and the Third one was the worst when it came to slamming you into a 2D section sometimes because you misstep or thought a treasure spot was going to contain some valuable tokens, only for it to be a dash panel that'll shoot you in the direction you didn't want to go, And the last two islands are just the first island, but they feel like they were cut from the first one just to make into two separate islands to make the game feel longer with the fourth island just being the story cutscene island, and the fifth being annoying as you're always running into mini-bosses or more of those stupid 2D sections. The story plays up a mystery that delivers almost nothing of note other than the chaos emeralds are from space and the alien race that brought them are now dead, big surprise there. I know people are gonna defend the characterization of Sonic's friends in this game just cause Amy isn't trying to get Sonic to marry her every sentence like the older titles, they are just there in my opinion the only interesting thing of note is Eggman and Sage for maybe a moment or two, Sage getting the only thing that I could consider Character growth before the end of the game. The gameplay isn't much different as Sonic can run around, jump and do challenges, but now there's combat that doesn't just involve you homing attack every enemy, now you homing attack and kick. I literally only did like one move by the end of this because of how spammable it is, the combat isn't fun, some mini-bosses can be fun to take down, though the rest can be a chore, and the titan bosses are all Super Sonic spectacles that have you flying around, parrying then attacking the weak point while someone screams in the background, wait that's just the music, I didn't enjoy the music, was never a fan of the lyrical music in sonic, and this is more apparent in the titan fights. The world themes, Cyberspace themes, and even the titan fights range from ok to the first one annoying me a little bit, but it's all harmless or somewhat forgettable. I'm not gonna say it's completely worthless, there's a blueprint, Like other people have said there's a blueprint, that Sonic team can polish up, and hopefully make into something much better, but this is where the cynical side of me takes over, I don't know how much Sonic Team would follow up on this, seeing their track record, outside of Adventure and Adventure 2 and even then I'd argue they changed stuff between the titles to make them different outside of them keeping a chao garden. I don't have confidence in Sonic Team that they'll follow it up even with how much people wanna argue they're "listening" to fans. We had Mania five years ago, and to date, I don't see them trying to plan out more. Sonic Team likes to do one thing, and move on that's something you can see with some of their titles after the Adventure Series, and it feels more apparent now with how they went from Generations, Lost World, Boom, then Forces. I'm trying to make just a word of caution that while this is a step in the right direction, I think we should believe it when we see it if Sonic Team/Sega will actually continue to make something that is worth the 60 Dollars, or if they'll just continue to milk this franchise and now have consumers pay them for a full price game when the experience at best was probably less then that. Sonic Frontiers wasn't the worst game I've ever played, this was the first 3D Sonic I've played since Sonic Unleashed. But seeing how I didn't pay full price for that, I regret paying full price for this game in general. Save the 60 dollars, and pay for it later if you wanna try it out. It'll probably be fun for a lot of people, but I can see this game being the most mixed Sonic Game to release for a lot of people. Expand

It's definitely not GREAT, but the most problematic stuff is just "technical jank", the gameplay itself is incredibly solid, albeit a little unpolished.

Sonic Frontier is a very fast-paced game on a huge map. And it is an open world 3D action RPG game. Ninja, Naruto, Inuyasha, Sekiro, Ookami, and Son Goku such as Ninja, Naruto, Goku, etc. are the best in this game where you can run at super fast speeds and have fun fighting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now to give some background information. I am a modern sonic fan. If it weren't for Mania releasing, Sonic Generations would be my number 1 favorite Sonic game as I am a big fan of the boost styled sonic games. Forces proved to be so much of a dissapointment to me that it easily became the worst game I have ever played. I really hoped that Sonic Team would bring their A-game back and strive to make an steller video game. They succeeded, but not quite. At first I absolutely did not like the game, but I grew to like it more during my second playthrough. The reason for my low score however, is due to the fact that the things that made me hate this game during my first playthrough were still present in my second playthrough.

Now this game can easily be an 8 or even a 9 with a couple of hefty patches, but Sega for some reason decided to make some of the world's dumbest decisions imanginable. Firstly, Sonic moves quite slow. Now I get why as one would need to do so, but I am talking about cyberspace Sonic. Cyberspace can easily be the best part of the game as, while mostly containing stages as bad and short as Forces, the cyberspace level designs were pretty good, even though they steal a lot from the previous games. For some reason, instead of giving Sonic the power boost that he gets upon reaching max rings, they give him his unempowered boost instead, making Sonic SUPER slow. Not only that, but they gave Sonic magnetic shoes as jumping makes Sonic lose ALL of his momentum. That last point even applies to the open-zones where now you can't jump boost over canyons, you have to find a higher spot and just boost off it. It is only worse with Sonic's air boost being the worst I've ever seen. This is the same team that made Forces' superb airboost so I do not understand why they won't take that and put it in this game? Instead we got a flimsy air boost that doesn't get refilled after touching a spring and only acts as a sort-of third jump which most of the time gets you killed. The combat itself is decent, with the exception of that one sonic boom beam thing that is easily spammable and the parry NOT being a parry, but the enemies you fight are absolutely not. By the second island, the basic enemies get this annoying shield cylinder move that they can activate whenever. This mostly happens while in the middle of a combo, making your combo stop dead in its track so you can draw a circle around it. It only gets worse on the fifth island when that move gets spikes. Some of the minibosses are really bad, like Asura and all of its bugginess, Shark being ONLY slow quick time events, Squid and Fortress being the literal same boss with the only difference being that one is one rails, and that weird gigantic boss on the second island whos name I can't remember. That thing was quite agrivating with its fireballs moving from rail to rail. These problems I can slightly ignore, with the exception of cyberspace, but what I ABSOLUTELY cannot ignore is the idiotic forced 2D sections. This is an open world game and freedom of movement is a key component of open world games, like how climbing in BOTW made that game so much more fun! To make specific segments that lock Sonic from moving forward and back is BEYOND stupid. It only gets worse on the third island where accidentally touching a spring can push Sonic into an unescapable 2D section. This is beyond aggrivating and the third island is FILLED with them. This is not a minor annoyance, this may as well be a major bug in the game that needs to be patched out. If Sega is afraid of players being unable to properly control Sonic in those specific sections, they can easily solve it with D-Pad support. This brings up another issue. The things that fill these islands are not particularly fun. Most of these "challenges" are really easy and simplistic. There are also grind rails everywhere. It didn't feel like a bunch of Sonic stuff lying around. It felt more like a bunch of automated sections were floating above the land. It would be appreciated if they cut back on the dash pannels and let the player take control. It is clear that Sonic Team wants to take a step forward, but they clearly hesitated in doing so.

Now I have to end this review short due to the character limit, so I apologize that this review is purely negative. I have good things to say about it. This game is so close to being amazing, but I still see the common Sonic Team issues that were present in Sonic Forces. Now some of these problems can be fixed with an update, hence why it is a 4, but if Sonic Team refuses to do so, then I no longer have any hope for Sonic Team. It is clear to me that all of the people who made our beloved Sonic games are gone and the new workers have A LOT of training to do. It really shames me to put this so low as I hope I could call this game the game Forces should have been, but I can't. I really hope one day we could get a Sonic game that rivals Mario.

So what's the hype all about ? The game doesn't even smell of any polish like generations, it doesn't look as beautiful as colors or unleashed for a ps5 game. it doesn't have a good story , just a pile of cringe like a 12 year old wrote this going through an emo phase. Animation is hilarious lmao

I love it! The world is sooooooo huge. There is a vast world to discover. A lot of things to do. A very intriguing story. I recommend it. I would put a 9.5, because of the pooping, but we don't have that option on metacritic, so I'll put a 10.

Sonic Frontiers is a brave experiment that struggles to express its intentions while still committing many of its series' 3D sins. But if you're able to commit to learning its idiosyncrasies, you'll discover a fun, addictive journey unlike any in Sonic's past. [Issue #64 – March/April 2023, p. 71]

Sonic Frontiers tried so hard to bring new elements to the game that it ended up forgetting to put more of the personality of its own franchise. However, they managed to create a dynamic, captivating and fast game - as good as any other in the Sonic franchise. It's the kind of game where time passes like lightning, blue lightning.

Sonic Frontiers deserves credit for being a true departure from previous series installments. The open-zone structure is a great concept that frees the developers up to experiment with Sonic’s speed and abilities in new ways. Where the game comes up short is in its stale rehashing of classic stages, a control setup that could stand to be simplified, and performance woes that suck players out of the gameplay experience. With plenty of DLC and patches on the way, hopefully Frontiers can become a better version of what came out at launch. In the interim, it’s a buggy affair that entertains and frustrates in equal measures.
