Snake Pass exceeded my expectations. It can be very difficult, but never did it feel unfair. Every I failed to platform it was my fault, the level design is brilliant and the music is fantastic! They really payed close attention to detail. Water droplets smack drums in time and tune to the music. A cheerful slithery platformer.

One of the first games I got for the Switch back when it released. Yes the controls can be wonky, but it's honestly a unique platformer with a lot of charm and pretty graphics. All round, I really enjoyed it and hope for a sequel!

This is a 'budget' game that surprised me. I am so happy they could port it to the Switch in such a short time. It's a great platformer and also a puzzle how to reach things. To be fair, i will reward this with a 9 out of 10, by comparing in to other games that release in this medium price range (€19,99).
For this money you have a nice platformer that forces you to think like a snake.

A great game, gave me several hours of fun but I took a little getting used to the gameplay.

The soundtrack reminds me of banjo kazooie and the HD rumble I found a great addition.

    A great puzzle game.

This game is so unique. It is honestly one of the most creative platformers that I have ever seen. The visuals remind me of both Disney and Rare. The music was composed by David Wise of all people!

The visuals are charming, and surprisingly good on Switch even in portable mode. The music is perfectly fitting and relaxing, despite being there only 4 tracks in the game. The aquatic melody is amazing (not surprising since it was made by the composer of DK's aquatic ambience).

For its modest price, this game was a very pleasant surprise and I totally recommend it if you like platformers and challenging controls.

You play as noodle accompanied by a bird companion
Your only task is to collect the 3 gems spread across the different levels…
only problem is it’s a level of posts.. and you gotta get your snake on to climb them…
This game doesn’t seem to challenging at first…
It isn’t until the 2nd world out of 4 that your realize this games gonna have you throwing things…
There are 15 levels total that will all take a variety of different times depending on luck and how quickly you adapt to being a snake…
    I ultimately never did adapt…
Your main mechanics are move forward... go side to side for speed, lift your head up to climb, and grip.. that’s it…
The rest Is up to you and physics…
The game took me a little less than 4 and a half hours to get through…
Each of the worlds are themed after the different elements…
    earth, which is the intro…
here you’ll just be climbing posts.. collecting the blue orbs and gold coins around…
Water, which I felts was the hardest of the elements…
will introduce the ability to swim under water, this is also where switches are introduced…
you’ll be over the collectibles by then because of how frustrating climbing the poles that are now moving becomes with hazards such as spikes underneath… and the punishment of going over the same obstacles when you fall…
Fire which is where you have to deal with lava.. A decently quick chapter…
And finally air... youre dealing with the wind blowing, ultra frustrating, and this is when your bird friend comes in handy flying you across the different sections…
An after you complete all of the levels for a section you unlock a time trial mode for the levels…
I personally have no interest in the time trial mode, but the actual campaign is a great challenge that tested my patience for sure…
Ultimately I did feel like most deaths were my fault…
The camera doesn’t follow you automatically though…
So most is the keyword here..
The camera is an issue at times when you can’t see where you snake is pointed
thankfully there’s a decent amount of checkpoints around to make it less painful…
    and you’ll need them.
    I give Snake Pass
    a 7.5/10

Either way Snake Pass challenges you to complete a series of obstacle course-like levels as a snake. You can slither, wrap yourself around stuff, and swim underwater.

I personally love that you have to pretend you're a snake yourself it's exactly like being a snake you'll need to be slithering around like one to gain more speed. The visuals are pretty good except some aspects which could be improved on however you will still have a blast with this uniquely fun 3D adventure.

There are 4 worlds with a total of 15 levels split across the worlds. 3 gems are scattered across each level which are mandatory to collect to be able to advance to the next level. There are also a buch of bubbles scattered around in easy spots (although getting all can be hard) and 5 coins in difficult places. This makes for many hours of game play if you are a completionist, I'm not though so it took me about 6 hours to collect it all.
The worlds are colourful and bright and the music fits perfectly for each world.

    Now for the cons:
    - The HD rumble is broken(?) so you should turn it off. It was the first thing I did since it felt like the joy-con would explode every time they rumbled (and they rumble A LOT in this game). edit: This was fixed in a patch one day after release. The rumble could still be better but at least it works now.
    - The graphics are a bit blurry and feel unoptimized, my eyes hurt when I played in handheld mode but playing on the TV felt just fine.
    - The default controls felt weird to me so I switched to the "easy" controls which were much better. Might just be my personal preference though.

Snake Pass is definitely worth it's 20€ price tag and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a challenging platformer.

Three of these collectibles are necessary to progress through each of the fifteen levels, alongside optional blue orbs and gold coins that are there to add some difficulty and lengthen the time you spend on the game. Collecting every single orb and coin also grants a bonus reward, and although it's nothing vital, it's still pretty cool.
    THE GOOD
    - The control scheme is excellent and makes this game memorable. Controlling Noodle, the snake, is good fun and although it takes some getting used to, when you learn how to play properly you always feel in control.
    - Some of the collectibles are well hidden and will take some time to find, and although finishing the game makes the task of getting everything much easier with snake vision, I'd recommend trying to find everything on your first playthrough to enhance the difficulty. Skipping everything will make the game too short and too easy.
    - Levels are well designed and take advantage of Noodle's movement.
    - Collectibles stand out from environments well.
    - The game has a relatively slow pace so can be relaxing.
    - Time trials provide replay value.
    - Snake Pass is very cheap for how good it is, costing just $20/£16.
    THE BAD
    - The camera is terrible and gets in the way of otherwise great platforming. The camera often obstructs things from view, taking away the control you should have over Noodle. The camera is the thing I struggled with the most, and the main reason it's hard to rate the game higher.
    - There is a noticeable lack of progression, making many levels blur into one. No new abilities are introduced and between the worlds there aren't many new mechanics. It would have been nice if there were some skills you could unlock with all of the collectibles that don't really have much of a purpose.
    THE BORING
    - Graphically the game isn't amazing and environments get repetitive, but this doesn't get in the way of the fun. The art style is nice but nothing new.
    - Although there is a great soundtrack, there is only one track per world / one every four levels. It gets too repetitive.
    - Some of the levels are overly large, making it frustrating if you've missed something. Constant back tracking can get annoying.
    - The structure of each level is identical, and although this might bother some, I personally never got bored but it's something you'll want to consider.
    - There isn't a proper story but this isn't important in this kind of game.
    CONCLUSION
Snake Pass is a great game and very memorable experience, elevated by a unique control scheme that makes the game stand out from the competition, but let down by an awful camera that frequently gets in the way and disrupts otherwise fluid gameplay. With a very low price tag, the game is a must buy.

Another complaint people seem to have is the controls, or the mechanics of the character, the snake, of course they're going to be weird, I thought I was going to hate the game at first, but trust me, it takes practice, and as soon as you get the hang of it, it's pretty thorough with what it set out to be, You're not a human playing a human, you're a human playing a snake.

But Sumo Digital just could not figure out a good way to control a snake. The controls aren't just frustrating to learn, they never cease to be frustrating, with Noodle never responding in the way you expect. Snake Pass is colorful, and the main character Noodle is absolutely adorable, but all of the cute aesthetic choices just clash with how mindbogglingly difficult this game is. It's also not a good difficulty like Hyper Light Drifter or Dark Souls, it's an unfair and frustrating difficulty without a true learning curve.

The game starts off frustrating, and later levels have very little in terms of additional challenges to overcome, in many ways the opposite of a good difficulty curve.

After 5 or 6 hours with this game, as you finally learn to play around the anything but tight control scheme, and a PS1 era camera that fights you the whole game (and with an abysmally slow swivel speed and no camera acceleration options) this game does become fun, and it's uniqueness does set it apart from other platformers.

In terms of fidelity and performance. Snake Pass maintains a solid 30 FPS when docked on the Switch (same as PS4 and XBox One) and renders at a 675p resolution (lower than the PS4's 860p). Undocked it may drop a frame or two but it's rarely if ever noticeable and it still maintains 30 frames the vast majority of the time. In handheld mode it renders at around 480p resolution. The only way to play this game in an HD resolution or with 60 frames per second is on the PC or PS4 Pro. Evidence of lazy console ports across the board. The Switch is also missing a few shaders and effects (most notably depth of field) compared to PS4, but nothing that detracts from the experience in a meaningful way.

Overall there is a fun game here, but it's hidden behind a horrid control scheme and some strange technical limitations.

The camera is what I think is to blame here, as there is no good way to angle the camera around to locate items. For those who persevere and manage to find themselves one with the controls – those that embody the life of a snake – you’ll likely look back on this as a hidden gem that was glossed over by far too many. Personally it’s a game that I enjoy; one that I want to finish but never will. The pain of dropping to my death and losing minutes of progress for the eighth time, because my fingers just couldn’t keep up, outweighs the immense joy I got from succeeding on the ninth attempt.
