Apr 3, 2017Snake Pass is currently my personal surprise of 2017: a platformer-that's-not-really-a-platformer with strong puzzle elements and a pretty irresistible approach, built with passion and wit around an unconventional concept. It's also a bizarre and surprisingly hardcore experiment overall, one that will make some players fall in love while irritating others. it won't please everyone, but its desire for something original is certainly commendable.

Apr 8, 2017The slinking sensation of the fascinating control scheme makes it easy to recommend Snake Pass to casual fans and hardcore gamers alike. The soundtrack from Rare alum David Wise adds a soothing atmosphere to quiet moments and ramps up steel drums and pounding rhythm as the player tests their snaking skills. As the grass sways and the cartoony characters start chattering, it becomes hard to resist the charm and obvious love that went into this unique take on the genre.

Apr 6, 2017Snake Pass is a weird, wacky, and wonderful platformer with rewarding controls and great atmosphere. While there are a few minor issues holding it back, the game is a great throwback to the 3D platformers of the 90s, and a great indie title for the Switch.

Mar 31, 2017Snake Pass is a real gem in the early Switch library, and is certainly worth a look for anyone looking for that post-Zelda palette cleanser. This writer's never played a game like this before — which certainly can be a double-edged sword — but it's a fresh experience that will keep you engaged until the very end. Solid visuals, unconventional gameplay, a memorable soundtrack and a decent amount of replay value make this well worth your time, and we absolutely give it a recommendation. If you're looking to take a chance and play something unique, then Snake Pass is well worth a look.

Mar 29, 2017Snake Pass is a truly enjoyable, addictive and original platforming puzzler gem that really stands out. The only real issue is how short it feels. There are four worlds to complete, with fifteen stages in all, and an unlockable time-trial mode, but even with all that, there is a desire for more.
-
Mar 29, 2017Snake Pass sets out to bring a familiar feeling with a unique twist that sets it apart from its predecessors. While it does exactly that, it isn’t without fault, as overcoming the challenge of platforming without a jump might scare off the faint of heart. If you can overcome the early struggles and the occasional moments of frustration, the game offers a beautiful world to explore and plenty of collectables to keep you busy.
-
Mar 28, 2017Sadly, some slight technical issues do mar the experience. The visuals are too blurry, it's not as smooth as it could be, and the HD rumble issue needs to be ironed out ASAP. Look past these issues, and you'll discover a unique and charming puzzle platformer that manages to serve as a love letter to 3D adventures of yore.

Nintendo Force MagazineApr 24, 2017A charming design that puts an inventive twist on puzzle platformers. If you can stomach some moments of frustration, Snake Pass is certainly worth a look. [Issue #27 – May/June 2017, p. 25]

Apr 14, 2017Snake Pass won’t be for everyone. Getting a strong handle on the controls takes some time, and frustration can mount as Noodle plunges over-and-over again to his demise. Players who stick with it, however, will find a rewarding game with beautiful visuals and a soundtrack composed by one of the industry’s greatest. Early into the system’s life, Snake Pass is one of the finest games currently available on the Switch’s eShop.
-
Apr 4, 2017The Switch version has slightly fewer shadows and lighting effects, but the colorful stages look good on the system in docked or handheld mode.
-
Apr 24, 2017For those who persevere and manage to find themselves one with the controls – those that embody the life of a snake – you’ll likely look back on this as a hidden gem that was glossed over by far too many. Personally it’s a game that I enjoy; one that I want to finish but never will. The pain of dropping to my death and losing minutes of progress for the eighth time, because my fingers just couldn’t keep up, outweighs the immense joy I got from succeeding on the ninth attempt.

Apr 10, 2017Snake Pass brings some very welcome and challenging serpentine fun to the Nintendo Switch, along with memorable audiovisual worlds that will fill the players' eyes and ears. While its camera doesn't always work perfectly, there is no obstacle to its snake-like gameplay and to its snake approach to puzzle-solving that will stand in the way of Snake Pass becoming a memorable game.
-
Apr 8, 2017Snake Pass is designed for 20 to 30 minute bursts, getting a little frustrated during that time but revelling in the satisfaction of completing a climb and finding a new trinket for the pile. It has issues with its structure and pacing, but not at all with the artistry of its mechanics or audio-visual design. Given life by David Wise's laid back, fun and thoroughly-hummable score, Noodle's world is rich, vibrant and a joy to slither around.
-
Apr 4, 2017Snake Pass is a colourful snake 'em-up platformer with hard to learn controls, but is original enough to be worth more than a passing glance.
-
Apr 2, 2017Visually, Snake Pass recalls the Nintendo 64 era of Rare, with a bright and colorful presentation across its fifteen levels. When you dig into the game though, you find a unique set of controls that want to make the player really feel like a snake. If you spend time learning how Snake Pass controls, you'll find a rewarding, if sometimes uneven, experience.
-
Mar 31, 2017At times, then, Snake Pass can be a wonderfully relaxing journey through some beautiful habitats. The late game switches into an engaging and challenging puzzler, requiring some deft flicks of the left stick, but one that can feel immensely gratifying when you elegantly slalom your way over a narrow assault course that's suspended over lava. It's the middle third, when the game expects too much of you far too soon, that causes the momentum to stutter. Nevertheless, Snake Pass is a quirky puzzler that innovates while simultaneously evoking memories of your favourite platformers of yesteryear--just don't expect to grow into your new skin overnight.
-
Apr 21, 2017It may look childish, but it's a challenging and tough platformer. Put the blame on its tricky control scheme.
-
Apr 7, 2017Good idea, tenacious execution. In theory the snaky movement concept with its fluid motions and climbing is a neat addition to platforming, but in the end everything is a tad too sluggish.
-
Apr 2, 2017Snake Pass is a fun Platformer that is different than anything we had seen in the past. It kicks off with a promising beginning that might deliver us something much better in the near future.
-
Apr 10, 2017Snake Pass is a flawed experience - of that there is little doubt. But, for the most part, it’s worth your perseverance. I’d argue that the Switch version is where this game “belongs” the most. Having it available as a handheld experience which you can dip in and out of in short bursts plays right to the strengths of this game and, critically, avoids the frustrations which inevitably build up with any prolonged playtime.
-
Apr 17, 2017Despite all my complaints, if you’re even remotely interested – I still implore you to give Snake Pass a go. The reason behind all my nit-picking is simply because I liked this game so much. From the sprawling environments to the unique control scheme – it all wraps up to be a rather interesting experience that shouldn’t be missed.

Apr 6, 2017In this day and age of remakes and annual releases, it's refreshing to see a brand new IP that happens to be a platformer. The frustration of the controls coupled with the camera just broke down my enjoyment and the lack of real replay value hurt my logic to push through the frustration. I should also mention the musical score is fantastic and feels ripped right out of a Donkey Kong Country game (which makes sense since it's the same composer). Overall I think Snake Pass is worth checking out but curb your expectations a bit. I'm sure if it sells well, Snake Pass 2 will correct my problems with this first entry and slither its way to a better grade.

Mar 30, 2017Sumo Digital makes its solo debut with an old school platformer that's inventive, charming and a little too frequently infuriating.
