Those issues aside, though, I truly adored Sigma Star Saga DX. It’s fun, full of great characters and storytelling, and it’s a wholly unique hybrid of top-down exploration and Shmup combat. I enjoyed this adventure so much that I truly hope we get a modern sequel. For everyone who missed out on this adventure the first time around, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. It’s one of the very best games published by WayForward.

The DX version of Sigma Star Saga is an excellent shmup with RPG elements, imbued with a nice and mature story that grants a dark atmosphere like those seen in Metroid Fusion and MGS Ghost Babel. Despite that, more in-game extras and a better rebalance of the experience system, since the random encounters were reduced, would make a huge difference.

Sigma Star Saga DX is an interesting curio–a forgotten WayForward joint that I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to play in 2026, warts and all. I can honestly say I’ve never played anything quite like it. That said, no single aspect of the gameplay is without some measure of frustration. The overworld is interesting but the zoomed-in camera, respawning enemies, and retraversal can get old. One late-game planet in particular adds a foggy filter and a quickly-ticking timer that required several retries. I eventually grew tired of the SHMUP encounters because they’re so repetitious and while Gun Data is a cool idea, its implementation is ham-strung. All that said, I think this game has great bones and I’d love to see a sequel someday that addresses some of my issues with it.

While driven by an undeniably different and creative concept that blends together classic RPG beats with arcade shooting, it somewhat struggles to make either as satisfying as they could be.
