Amazing gameplay and soundtrack just like other Atlus titles. Exploration is super fun which is the nice direction of SMT series. New demon designs are great .But I hope there will be more dungeon like tradition SMT game. Easily one of my favourite JRPG.

This game despite being in the oven for a very long time, managed to still exceed my expectations and deliver an amazing experience to which I'll never forget. This was not my first game for the series nor it was the second, but i firmly believe that anyone can pick up and play this game and enjoy it just the same. I can only hope that Atlus continues to create more products that can be this good.

Excellent JRPG, nothing like Persona which might upset people who might think that they're alike. SMT is more focused on dark and philosophical themes instead of Persona's more personal and wholesome stories. SMT V feature a huge step up from SMT IV, with upgraded models, a huge customization system, addictive combat and exploration. Despite its lapses in the story, the game emerges as one of the best Jrpgs on the Nintendo Switch and shows a good path for Atlus´s future with its first UE4 game.

With about 40 hours of gameplay clocked in, this game has surpassed any expectation i had for the S.M.T franchise.
Despite having the classic JRPG turn-based combat style the gamplay loop remains enjoyable and fresh, with it's challenging battles and fun exploration on an open-ended map.

The design of the world is pretty well done, as well as the movements of the MC, talking about that, it reminds me, the animations are pretty well done as some demons even have unique skills with unique animations and chamera angles. A lot of effort is seen to be put in this game. I would definitely recommend it. Expand

I personally love to collect all the demons.

I really don't get, why people review bomb this... Either Die-Hard Persona Fans or the so-called "Console Warriors".

This game is NOT Persona! Persona is in fact a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei. Persona is about the individuals in it with a imaginary world in the minds of people. Shin Megami Tensei is about the entire world and the state it is with actual creatures from folklore.
Persona has a more linear world with a set calendar and social links.
Shin Megami Tensei has a bigger world free to explore and a more complex battle system, where you can pick your party members from over 200 Demons in the game.

I personally enjoyed it greatly. That's MY opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Shin Megami Tensei V is an excellent game, as usual from ATLUS. The new style of gameplay, separate from the series' standard of dungeons, is refreshing and brings something new to the table. I also do enjoy the numerous interactions with demons, the gameplay features, and new animations that occur. The music is also stellar as usual, feeling just as great as Shin Megami Tensei IV's soundtrack. However, I do have one or two problems with the game. Firstly, the story's mostly what one would expect. Unlike something like IV Apocalypse or Nocturne, there's no real change to the setup of the Law/Chaos dynamic. Neutral is the unambiguous best option again. There's nothing similar to Reasons too, and those were a unique change of pace that made Nocturne feel more unique from the previous games. Meanwhile, while a few characters like Dazai do have character development, many others are as flat as they were at the start such as Yuzuru, or do nothing like Miyazu. I do like the more nuanced take of the Law/Chaos dynamic where both sides have legitimate points instead of being bloodthirsty angels/demons though. All in all, great game. Expand

The game looks beautiful, especially for the Switch and shows that Unreal Engine is capable of outputting good looking and optimised games. The netherworld is an interesting landscape with much to be found and lots to look at. The demons that reside in this world are all unique and fantastically modelled and textured. I felt like I was talking to them sometimes, it was a really different feeling from any game I've ever played. This is a graphically technically ambitious Switch exclusive, which makes it a unique experience compared to many of the Switch's exclusive titles. The only complaint I have is that the performance isn't AS optimized as it could be, & by that I mean I've had no issues myself playing the game. The framerate is a bit unstable, always hitting around 18 - 28fps, which isn't too dissimilar to how Breath of the Wild is an incredible, ambitiously made Switch exclusive that fails to maintain a stable 30fps. Like I said, SMT V is an excellent game. If you like dark, fantastical stories then this is a game that I can highly recommend. Also, understanding the games plot does not mean having to play the other games in the series, you can just start here if you want. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never found a good opportunity or excuse to really 'jump' into the Megami Tensei series, being overwhelmed by the, on one hand, many fanbases. And on the other, its niche appeal to hardcore gamers.

While I'm looking at my ever growing pile of unplayed Digital Devil Saga, Shin Megami Tensei, Persona and Devil Summoner games, collected over the last 20 years, I recall always being hesitant to pick an entry to really get into the series. I only ventured two times into this series.

The first one was SMT III: Nocturne, back on the PS2. Being only a Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest fan up to that point, my first encounter with the infamous Matador boss battle gave me my first insights, into what the appeal of the series was for many gamers. Unrelenting, challenging, even brutal at times. At that point in my life, I wasn't ready for such a commitment of the mind and time, to fully overcome and master this game.

My second entry was the Persona 4 Golden re-release on Steam, a couple of years ago. While I enjoyed my 10 hour stint into the game, I was never really hooked by the "life sim" part. Perhaps its successor Persona 5 Royal may one day fully convert me, as it got similarly raving reviews.

And then I decided to give Shin Megami Tensei V a chance.

(full disclosure, I spent around 80 hours into this game + DLC and I'm on the doorstep of the -what I presume- final array of bosses, having done all side quests up to that point and having completed the demonic compendium to around 90%)

What are the main points worth talking about?

    - The Nintendo Switch was not the best platform to have this game developed for. While it does play remarkably well, considering the weaker hardware, it's clear the game's (graphics) engine had to be tweaked to accommodate for the Switch's limitations. Is this the most expansive and beautiful game world to be shown? Not by a long shot. However the setting: a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, does mask the low-quality environments, and is in turn incredibly immersive. With many colorful and unique demons populating the areas.

    - The music is an acquired taste. Especially the first 10 or so hours in the first area, you will be subjected to -in my opinion- the weakest part of its soundtrack, both played during battle sequences and on the overworld. However, the soundtrack really starts kicking in, during the middle and last parts of the game, with some amazing boss compositions by Ryota Kozuka. The soundtrack sounds deceptively limited in the beginning, but there are around 175 arrangements, offering mixes of heavy metal and 'religious' chants.

    - The main "character" story feels like an afterthought. Due to the structure and nature of the game, there are long periods where you'll be enjoying the core demon fusion game play or clearing side quests. Resulting in periods of up to 10 to 15 hours, where nothing "happens" until the next brief main story cut scene hits, introducing a mediocre and ultimately forgettable cast of side characters, which are never given any room in the script to leave a lasting impact.

    - The main "meta" story however, is fascinating to go through. Working your way up the ranks from lowly fiends, slimes and pixies up to full blown deities, gods and celestial beings feels like a huge power trip. Even more, a sizeable portion of the demons, angels and everything in between, are given characters and miniature story arcs, based on their mythological or religious origins. Encountering (and challenging) beings such as Loki, Zeus, Mephisto or Amon brought a smile to my face.

    - The difficulty is very systematic and consistent, meaning that during normal encounters, you won't have too much trouble (should you fully respect and embrace its "hit elemental weakness --> get extra hits" system). However the mini bosses and main bosses can be difficult and sometimes feel cheaply designed. Mini bosses simply roam the overworld and nothing clues you into its difficulty level. You could be facing a level 25 demon or even a level 60 demon, forcing you to run into them and either escape or reload the game, should their level dwarf your own. Main story bosses are simply damage sponges, with a very specific move list and unique mix of handpicked weaknesses. You need to come fully prepared with the correct set of demons to counter these bosses, or be smacked with a "Game over"-screen, over and over again.

    - The main appeal however will be the demon fusion system, giving flashbacks to the better aspects of games like Pokémon, the Alchemy pot-system in Dragon Quest games or even further back to games like Jade Cocoon or Monster Rancher. While you'll certainly start out with a feeling you're not making the best fusions or giving your demons the best skills, you'll soon realize demons are a tool to be discarded, cannibalizing your way to better demons. They're simply a means to an end.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable game and a good entry point into the series.

Even though the story is barely there, the most important part of a SMT game(the gameplay) is nearly flawless. I would give it a high 80 so I’m rounding it my score to a 9

I waited since the announcement and not dissapointed. This entry is story focused similar to smt4. The game runs fairly decent and demon model quality has for the majority fastly been improved compared to other megaten games like p5. DLC is bit high in price, but its nice to see the effort they made including other smt games and not a ripoff compared to the dlc in smt4 to P5R.

As I said: If you love turn-based combat and a "pet" system like in Pokemon, this game is perfect. I've never had so much fun fusing and optimizing monsters. This game has done it perfectly in my opinion and when I finished it at around 85 hours, I felt like it could have been a bit longer. When you arrive in the fourth of the four big areas, you're around level 50 which means you spent the last 50 levels at the same (pretty big) location. Would have loved another 5th level, but they can pretty much use the exact same combat & demons and just bring us a sequel. Would be great if that one had a story.

It brings back the fun strategic combat the series is known for and adds many customizable options for not only your main character but also your demons. I easily lost many hours simply focusing on building a better team to use in battle because I enjoyed this aspect so much. There are over 200 playable demons and many of them with the right skills and attributes can be useful party members. It really just depends on how much work you’re willing to put into each one of them. While in past games some lower level demons served merely as fusion material for stronger ones, now you can build them in a way that they can be useful even at the end of the game. Demon negotiations have never been more fun as the dialogues are frequently hilarious and even though the outcomes can be just as unpredictable as previous games there is definitely a strategy to them. Visually the game looks beautiful running on Unreal Engine 4 and I can safely say that the demons and environments have never looked better! The post-apocalyptic areas are all intricately designed and nearly every nook and cranny is filled with a surprise for you to discover. Last but certainly not least is the amazing soundtrack. I still have some of the battle tracks looping in my head as I’m writing this. Bottom line: If you have even a slight interest in monster-collecting games or even just JRPG’s in general, I would highly recommend this game. Expand

    Cons
    - Light on story/characterization. What is presented is cool but, there's just not much of it.
    - Non-ideal performance. It's not a deal-breaker but, there's some pop-in and light stuttering.
    - Monster recruiting is (seemingly?) more random that I would like.

    Bottom line IMO
While those are looking for an elaborate plot should look elsewhere, it's really awesome if you want an immersive, great looking and sounding, monster collector game that leans towards the challenging.

A couple of points: - 1. I miss the 2D sprites but understand their time has past. The 3D models look great though and and the animation that goes along with them looks nice and breaths a little bit of life into some demons I’ve been seeing since the PS2 games. - 2. The English dub is good. It’s not great but it’s good. The Japanese dub is nice too. I’m not a “subs are better than dubs” guy but the Japanese voice acting is great. - 3. There are some breakneck changes in environment after the first area. I knew they would have more than just an open desert the entire game but the variety in environments is fantastic. - 4. OG Megaten folks will miss the dungeons. I do. I wish there had been another dungeon throw. In between some of the other areas but otherwise the ones we got were down nicely and added a different feel to the environments.

    - 5. The NORMAL difficulty is a fine place to start. This game is not as punishing as III and feels more inline for IV. That said HARD is brutal and your demons can miss even after accuracy buffs and some of the losses feel especially heart breaking after spending hours preparing. That said it was a good set up to start at normal and learn how to balance the Magastuhi and critical attacks with buffs and debuffs. - 6. The story is weaker than I was expecting. After IV and the ultra weird IVA story wise I was expecting a little more meat. I loved it and I thought they did well without it taking to much time but I would have liked to know a little more and had some of the details ironed out with our side characters. This is nowhere the depth of Strange Journey which was a high-water mark in story telling from Megaten. - 7. The Art direction, GUI, iconography and overall design is gorgeous. There is nothing that doesn’t feel like it was scrutinized thoroughly. Everything looks tight and precise. The scrolling battle Action menu works great. The colors for the buttons and the design in the menus feels great. The map works well and is easy to navigate with. - 8. This isn’t the best game in the world, it is however the best JRPG I have played in a few years and it was well worth the weight. The detail that went into the combat is where this game shines the most though. Every buff, power, attack, item and guard has been meticulously balanced in such a way that I haven’t found a single game-breaking spell combination. There are no easy spell loops or exploits that I’ve found yet. As a result you are absolutely required to pay attention. SMT V will brutalize you for become infected complacent even near the end. - 9. The difficulty ramps up violently, often taking you by surprise with enemies with alt weaknesses and strengths. If you aren’t taking time to balance your party and cover all the bases you will be a victim early on. - This is the best you can get JRPG wise in the current generation of consoles. You won’t find a more challenging and intense experience. That challenge rewards you with an amazing experience though as you realize you’ve mastered an area and know how to react throughout it. If you’re new to this series the easier options in difficulty are a great place to start. This is also the definitive Switch game for me this year. I have not been taxed by a game the way this one does since IV on the 3DS. Do not miss the opportunity to challenge yourself and grow. SMTV is a solid choice for someone who wants to master a game.

SMT V is formidable as an JRPG, and, in general, it deserves to reach the summit of Switch’s game roster. From battle mechanics, to game design and lovely exploration sessions, it gives players the opportunity to experiment, and to fall and rise against formidable enemies and bosses.
And yes, i know you’ve heard about its difficulty… Well, the genre it belongs to is famous for being too much lenient most of the times, avoiding any attempts to be challenging. This title crosses this sort of metaphorical complexity wall, giving players the opportunity to challenge themselves, even at lower difficulties. Yeah, it could be hard to handle, but if this aspect intrigues you, this new megaten iteration is the right answer to your hardcore pulses.
Nintendo portable console tries to match technical requests as much as possible, and, at the end of the day, the final result is not that bad. Frame rate drops could occur here and there, but, at the same time, combat sessions are not affected, even a little bit.
If you struggle to trust what i’ve written right before, just take a look at gameplays elsewhere, then come back here, and make your personal evaluation.
SMT V is running for being that hidden treasure that you were searching for.

This is a game that similar to SMT 3: Nocturne, has a more minimal “show not tell” approach to story telling and instead focuses on alignments and opens some grand philosophical discussion with depth that a lot of RPG stories are lacking in my opinion. I have preferred how the Shin Megami Tensei series doesn’t try to force character interactions down your throat at every turn and doesn’t rely as much on tropes as other titles in the JRPG genre. All of this said, I have preferred the story of other entries in the mainline series, my favorite being Strange Journey. The gameplay is top notch though and has made this a thoroughly enjoyable experience for me personally and graphically this game is one of the most impressive I’ve seen yet on the Nintendo Switch, and the frame rate has been fairly stable for me playing in handheld mode. I highly recommend this game to anyone who has loved the JRPG genre, but is maybe tired with some of the tropes and gimmicks that more recent entries in popular series have put out lately. If you're here for a story like Persona 5 with characters you grow strongly attached to throughout dozens of hours, that's just not what this is. While SMT never really skimped on character development in the past, it's clear they had a larger focus on the gameplay and taking this game in a new direction for the franchise. Gameplay wise, it blows every previous game out of the water in terms of playability and enjoyment. Combat is more refined than ever, and exploration is a blast.
Naturally there are issues. The framerate and visuals aren't perfect, and I've had a couple issues with the camera. And even though I dismissed the complaints about the story, I can still understand the feeling of missing a strong, compelling story to drive you forward. This game doesn't deserve a 10, but neither a 0 as many people is giving. So, I'll leave a 10. The music is awesome, the quantity of demons is huge, It's a long game and hard. One of the best games for Switch.

For a Switch game; this is quite impressive.
The gameplay is great challenging fun, the music might not reach SMT IV level of godhood but still: it is good.

The story is serviceable, but that would be my only complain. I love this game

Hands down one of the best games I have played on the switch, and JRPG in general, yes the story is ok, yes the open world lags. But those are minor annoyances for what is one of the best monster catching games of all time, the soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece, often I find myself just sitting in menus listening to it because its that good.

Compared to something like Fire Emblem Three Houses, which says you can customize your roster, it pales in comparison to what you can do in Shin Megami Tensei V. My favorite part of the game was easily the first area, running around Tokyo slowly building up your roster and doing every sidequest felt so inviting. This is the only game where I feel massivley inclined to do every sidequest, and the movement was fun on the overworld trying to get to places you're not supposed to and then being rewarded with a Miman, one of the tiny creatures that grant you Glory, a currency to further your stats. The game kind of fizzled out in excitement, especially when you're forced back into the mundane human world and not Da'at, the destroyed Tokyo. This game is so much fun and you're encouraged not to grind but rather keep fusing demons to grow your roster and collect essences to make them truly unique for whatever challenge you face. When you hit a tough boss it feels so rewarding to come back with a party well equipped to exploit his weaknesses; not to mention the amazing soundtrack accompanying you as you fight these battles. It truly is something special and makes you feel like a tactical genius... until it throws you into the Yamato-no-Orochi zone.

This is the final zone of the game and it makes you collect 3 keys from 3 super bosses 10 levels higher than you to forge through on an uninteresting plot. This one is objectively a grind of running around aimlessly waiting for Ara Mitamas to pop up to gain tons of EXP. I wouldn't mind it honestly if it was supported by a strong plot, but it's not. The premise is super interesting initially, reclaim the throne of God and remake the world in your vision, however the characters supporting each choice lack any sort of depth and I was just kinda pillaging onwards for my own goals.

As JRPG's go, this one is one of the best. Combat is so meaningful and so so so much fun, exploring is so much fun, but the plot lacked any characters that have any depth or meaning to the overall story and it really fell flat in this regard. Play SMT V it is such a treat to play.
(My favorite demon is easily **** followed by Loki.)

Finally a JRPG that is heavy on mechanics and light on exposition - I've been looking for you for a long time!

Every step of the way you are thinking of the best ways to customise and build your team to surmount the next challenge the game throws at you. There are a ton of demons to utilise as well and no obvious best choice - it will vary on the situation you find yourself in. The progression is almost perfect - there is no time you dont feel yourself learning and becoming both a better player and honing your strategies.

If I had a criticism it would be that it contains an oldschool manual save system with no autosave. Which is pointless because you can return to a save point to save at any time which is frankly a little bit annoying. Im not sure if this was intended to give the game a bit of a dark souls vibe but I'd prefer an autosave system personally.

This game is a masterpiece. Thoroughly recommended.

Best turn based combat system I've ever played. If it weren't for the ending, I'd give it a 10

I've never played a SMT Game before, SMT V was a great introduction for me into the Series.
SMT V has great visuals, the Monster Design is fantastic and the Story is interesting.
But I should note that the Game is really Grind Heavy.

What a journey! After eight years of waiting, the fifth installment of MegaTen is finally here, and it manages to deliver a satisfying experience. It may not have the deepest plot or most interesting cast of human characters, but it's fun, and I appreciate that it challenged me to think more about myself, my beliefs and how I view the world around me. And how many games can do that? [Issue #57 – January/February 2022, p. 76]

SMTV brought everything I expected from a new chapter in the series of one of the first RPG games made, always renewing and innovating. We have an adventure that will make you stay for more than 40 hours hoping it doesn't end. It's really a great must-have for SMT fans and highly recommended for any RPG fan.

Comparing with an adored Persona cannot be avoided, but it is still a quite different experience for a different audience. Great fights, growing demons, excelent graphics and atmosphere. This JRPG succeeded.
