It’s an SMT game. Good turn based combat. Solid story about Gods and creations and destruction etc etc. visuals are good I like the direction but a little fuzzy and held back by switch limitations. Felt like a DQ11 world with big open areas to explore. Challenging at times but why else would you be playing an SMT game. A must play RPG for any switch owner.

Hands down the best JRPG on the system as for May2023. Very few are the games where I spent +60 hours and still wanting more. I've now purchased Nocturne on switch and Devil Survivor 2 on 3DS, but I doubt they'll be reaching that high on my top played game list. SMT5 has reach top 1, yes, closely followed by RE4 (not the remaster). Funny cause these are the last 2 games I played, so I feel kind of lucky, and I'm playing games since the early 90s. I picked up this game because of my perfect experience in Persona 5. I played the game in normal difficulty, and it was one of the most difficult normal difficulty I have ever played. I blacked out a few times at the first few hours into the game but the game is becoming much easier later on once you get the mechanics. Something is magical about this game but I couldn't really tell. What a weird yet enjoyable experience! Expand

People who don't like Shin Megami Tensei mainline games, who in many cases have never played them, played this and didn't like it because it wasn't Persona 6.

It's one of the best JRPGs of all time, and it's a damn good SMT game. Period.

Compared to something like Fire Emblem Three Houses, which says you can customize your roster, it pales in comparison to what you can do in Shin Megami Tensei V. Your roster of yourself and 3 other demons, some of the coolest designs the series has seen yet too, to forage your way through Tokyo and claim your godhood as the tarnished sin of the Nahobino, a fusion of a human and a demon's knowledge.

My favorite part of the game was easily the first area, running around Tokyo slowly building up your roster and doing every sidequest felt so inviting. This is the only game where I feel massivley inclined to do every sidequest, and the movement was fun on the overworld trying to get to places you're not supposed to and then being rewarded with a Miman, one of the tiny creatures that grant you Glory, a currency to further your stats. The game kind of fizzled out in excitement, especially when you're forced back into the mundane human world and not Da'at, the destroyed Tokyo. This game is so much fun and you're encouraged not to grind but rather keep fusing demons to grow your roster and collect essences to make them truly unique for whatever challenge you face. When you hit a tough boss it feels so rewarding to come back with a party well equipped to exploit his weaknesses; not to mention the amazing soundtrack accompanying you as you fight these battles. It truly is something special and makes you feel like a tactical genius... until it throws you into the Yamato-no-Orochi zone.

This is the final zone of the game and it makes you collect 3 keys from 3 super bosses 10 levels higher than you to forge through on an uninteresting plot. This one is objectively a grind of running around aimlessly waiting for Ara Mitamas to pop up to gain tons of EXP. I wouldn't mind it honestly if it was supported by a strong plot, but it's not. The premise is super interesting initially, reclaim the throne of God and remake the world in your vision, however the characters supporting each choice lack any sort of depth and I was just kinda pillaging onwards for my own goals.

As JRPG's go, this one is one of the best. Combat is so meaningful and so so so much fun, exploring is so much fun, but the plot lacked any characters that have any depth or meaning to the overall story and it really fell flat in this regard. Play SMT V it is such a treat to play.
(My favorite demon is easily **** followed by Loki.)

Very fun and challenging JRPG. It is one of the JRPG that make sure that you utilises everything at your disposal, even your rare items. So prepared to use and let go some of your precious items in some of the battles.
The OST is also awesome, with a mix of metal and techno.
The story is a bit ehh for JRPG standard, but the concept is quite interesting similar to other SMT series A

The story is absolute nonsense and the graphics are not up-to-date.

This game has done it perfectly in my opinion and when I finished it at around 85 hours, I felt like it could have been a bit longer. When you arrive in the fourth of the four big areas, you're around level 50 which means you spent the last 50 levels at the same (pretty big) location. Would have loved another 5th level, but they can pretty much use the exact same combat & demons and just bring us a sequel. Would be great if that one had a story.

There are a ton of demons to utilise as well and no obvious best choice - it will vary on the situation you find yourself in. The progression is almost perfect - there is no time you dont feel yourself learning and becoming both a better player and honing your strategies.

If I had a criticism it would be that it contains an oldschool manual save system with no autosave. Which is pointless because you can return to a save point to save at any time which is frankly a little bit annoying. Im not sure if this was intended to give the game a bit of a dark souls vibe but I'd prefer an autosave system personally.

This game is a masterpiece. Thoroughly recommended.

It focuses on the war of angels and demons so it may be quite bland for others but that is the main plot so one should expect that it will not delve deeper on human characters as much as it did on lores and background of "demons". The best entry in an excellent series. If you’ve ever enjoyed a Shin Megami Tensei game before, this has all of those elements refined to the highest degree. If you’re a JRPG fan generally, but haven’t made the plunge into SMT before, this is the entry point. If you don’t like turn-based JRPGs, this isn’t the game for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never found a good opportunity or excuse to really 'jump' into the Megami Tensei series, being overwhelmed by the, on one hand, many fanbases. And on the other, its niche appeal to hardcore gamers.

While I'm looking at my ever growing pile of unplayed Digital Devil Saga, Shin Megami Tensei, Persona and Devil Summoner games, collected over the last 20 years, I recall always being hesitant to pick an entry to really get into the series. I only ventured two times into this series.

The first one was SMT III: Nocturne, back on the PS2. Being only a Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest fan up to that point, my first encounter with the infamous Matador boss battle gave me my first insights, into what the appeal of the series was for many gamers. Unrelenting, challenging, even brutal at times. At that point in my life, I wasn't ready for such a commitment of the mind and time, to fully overcome and master this game.

My second entry was the Persona 4 Golden re-release on Steam, a couple of years ago. While I enjoyed my 10 hour stint into the game, I was never really hooked by the "life sim" part. Perhaps its successor Persona 5 Royal may one day fully convert me, as it got similarly raving reviews.

And then I decided to give Shin Megami Tensei V a chance.

(full disclosure, I spent around 80 hours into this game + DLC and I'm on the doorstep of the -what I presume- final array of bosses, having done all side quests up to that point and having completed the demonic compendium to around 90%)

What are the main points worth talking about?

    - The Nintendo Switch was not the best platform to have this game developed for. While it does play remarkably well, considering the weaker hardware, it's clear the game's (graphics) engine had to be tweaked to accommodate for the Switch's limitations. Is this the most expansive and beautiful game world to be shown? Not by a long shot. However the setting: a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, does mask the low-quality environments, and is in turn incredibly immersive. With many colorful and unique demons populating the areas.

    - The music is an acquired taste. Especially the first 10 or so hours in the first area, you will be subjected to -in my opinion- the weakest part of its soundtrack, both played during battle sequences and on the overworld. However, the soundtrack really starts kicking in, during the middle and last parts of the game, with some amazing boss compositions by Ryota Kozuka. The soundtrack sounds deceptively limited in the beginning, but there are around 175 arrangements, offering mixes of heavy metal and 'religious' chants.

    - The main "character" story feels like an afterthought. Due to the structure and nature of the game, there are long periods where you'll be enjoying the core demon fusion game play or clearing side quests. Resulting in periods of up to 10 to 15 hours, where nothing "happens" until the next brief main story cut scene hits, introducing a mediocre and ultimately forgettable cast of side characters, which are never given any room in the script to leave a lasting impact.

    - The main "meta" story however, is fascinating to go through. Working your way up the ranks from lowly fiends, slimes and pixies up to full blown deities, gods and celestial beings feels like a huge power trip. Even more, a sizeable portion of the demons, angels and everything in between, are given characters and miniature story arcs, based on their mythological or religious origins. Encountering (and challenging) beings such as Loki, Zeus, Mephisto or Amon brought a smile to my face.

    - The difficulty is very systematic and consistent, meaning that during normal encounters, you won't have too much trouble (should you fully respect and embrace its "hit elemental weakness --> get extra hits" system). However the mini bosses and main bosses can be difficult and sometimes feel cheaply designed. Mini bosses simply roam the overworld and nothing clues you into its difficulty level. You could be facing a level 25 demon or even a level 60 demon, forcing you to run into them and either escape or reload the game, should their level dwarf your own. Main story bosses are simply damage sponges, with a very specific move list and unique mix of handpicked weaknesses. You need to come fully prepared with the correct set of demons to counter these bosses, or be smacked with a "Game over"-screen, over and over again.

    - The main appeal however will be the demon fusion system, giving flashbacks to the better aspects of games like Pokémon, the Alchemy pot-system in Dragon Quest games or even further back to games like Jade Cocoon or Monster Rancher. While you'll certainly start out with a feeling you're not making the best fusions or giving your demons the best skills, you'll soon realize demons are a tool to be discarded, cannibalizing your way to better demons. They're simply a means to an end.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable game and a good entry point into the series.

    - No random encounters.

    Cons:

    - The game looks too fancy for Switch which makes the performance suffer quite badly. Expect framerates below 30. Not a deal breaker at all, but worth mentioning. Atlus has never been good with the optimisation.

Even with a few nitpicks towards a few aspects of the game, it finally feels like they have perfected the formula that they've been using for decades.

Everything in itshines from the moment you boot it up. The first thing I want to mention is just how PERFECT the soundtrack is! There isn't a single bad track. Every single song is superb, aiding in building a fantastic atmosphere and an epic experience, wether you're in a boss fight or fusing demons.
And speaking of atmosphere, like almost every other SMT game, its just fantastic. The unique apocalyptic and high-stakes challenges and moments that you go through are very immersive and just absolutely engaging. In addition to how immersive it plays and how perfect it sounds, it's also worth mentioning how good it looks. Especially for a Switch game. It does take a MAJOR hit in how it runs, as you can clearly see the fps taking huge dips. But with that said, it's also incredible to see how marvelous the environments and designs are. The devs managed to pull it off.

The highlight of SMT V is certainly how accessible and refined the gameplay is. From battling to fusing, it feels like a modern and necessary take on an old functional formula.
The combat system is familiar, with quality life changes that makes it the series best. Fusion system is magnificent and works smoothly and with ease unlike previous games. Most sidequests are good, balancing challenging and rewarding tasks. And the bosses... they're a delight to fight. From optional to mandatory ones. They all hit the right notes. Especially the final boss and the game's super boss. Two of the greatest JRPG bosses I've fought in a while.

It's amazing to see that one of my biggest gripes with previous games of the series feels resolves. I hated how unbalanced and unfair they could get at times, and I didn't feel that at all with SMT V. Sure, rng can still catch you by surprise, but it's rare and usually just happens to the unprepared.
Grinding can also be done pretty quickly. In fact, I only felt the need to grind for the super boss.

If there's anything bad to say about this game, it's certainly two things:

1 - The story can be quite shallow. It's good, packs a nice ominous vibe, at times it's as minimalistic as SMT 3 - but it just lacks depth! The characters are cool, the setting is good, protagonists are interesting and the whole conumdrum is bleak enough to keep you interested, but there's just something missing. It feels a little undercooked.

2 - Exploration sucks. It's the worst part of the game. The first and second area are great, but the third and fourth are MAZES! It can be quite frustrating, especially if you're trying to get everything, like the fun little Mimans and all amalgams. The environments, depiste how beautiful they look, can also look bland and repetitive sometimes.

But that's it. That's my long and loving review of the perfect game that is SMT V. It's definitely not for everyone, because it can often feel pretty niche. But it's a rare diamond. One that looks, sounds and plays perfectly.

The only complaint I have is that the performance isn't AS optimized as it could be, & by that I mean I've had no issues myself playing the game. The framerate is a bit unstable, always hitting around 18 - 28fps, which isn't too dissimilar to how Breath of the Wild is an incredible, ambitiously made Switch exclusive that fails to maintain a stable 30fps. Like I said, SMT V is an excellent game. If you like dark, fantastical stories then this is a game that I can highly recommend. Also, understanding the games plot does not mean having to play the other games in the series, you can just start here if you want. Expand

If you’re familiar with Persona, it feels familiar but don’t come into this expecting the same thing. The premise is pretty straightforward: fight demons along the way, recruit them, and fuse them to create more powerful demons. As for gameplay, you’ll want to have demons who can exploit weaknesses to give you an advantage. Pretty simple. There is a pretty good variety of skills each demon can specialize in, so you’ll focus primarily on building a team that suits your style. The number of demons you can find and summon is simply staggering, giving you the freedom to customize how you see fit. You could spend hours tweaking your party getting that perfect team composition. The music has this eerie, foreboding, and tense feel to it, but man, it absolutely bangs. Visually, the game excels in character and demon design. I always looked forward to seeing a new demon just because of how awesome or bizarre their design is.

Here is where I have problems. The overworld that you explore remains this drab, boring landscape throughout almost the entirety of the game. Each area doesn’t feel distinct from the previous, only swapping color palettes. The performance is, well, terrible. The game will chug and stutter a lot. And finally, the story did not keep me engaged at all. For a story about godhood, it just didn’t feel exciting, and I didn’t know what I was working towards. You get some dialogue, a few short cut scenes, and you’re back to slogging through the world (sometimes for hours) before you get to the next part of the story, but there was nothing really to look forward to.

In the end, I really enjoyed Shin Megami Tensei V. It’s nowhere near perfect by any means, but it’s still a pretty good JRPG for its gameplay, customization, and the astonishing amount of demons you can recruit. It’s got me hooked, and I look forward to future entries and going back to play the previous ones. Thumbs up from me.

If you're here for a story like Persona 5 with characters you grow strongly attached to throughout dozens of hours, that's just not what this is. While SMT never really skimped on character development in the past, it's clear they had a larger focus on the gameplay and taking this game in a new direction for the franchise. Gameplay wise, it blows every previous game out of the water in terms of playability and enjoyment. Combat is more refined than ever, and exploration is a blast.
Naturally there are issues. The framerate and visuals aren't perfect, and I've had a couple issues with the camera. And even though I dismissed the complaints about the story, I can still understand the feeling of missing a strong, compelling story to drive you forward. Based on what I was looking for when I picked up this game, it's a 9/10 and probably my favorite game this year.

Stunning game ! You have to be patient and grind but it’s worth it because the world is beautiful even though it’s on a switch . The monsters are awesome and the system is very deep . It’s not persona ! It’s a dark , angels vs demons story driven adventure which is really worth trying if you enjoy jrpg and a deep but not unfair system . It is difficult so be ready for that .

The gameplay and exploration are really solid, the side-quests are really good, but the story and the characters are worthless, truly worthless.
The story gets a 4/10 at best because it's just boring (tbh I would rank it at 2/10), I can't even say that I dislike or like the characters, because they're boring and don't do anything.

Easily the best turn based RPG that has come out this year, and one of my personal picks for game of the year. The claims about the story being non-existent or terrible are greatly exaggerated. The claims about the story being non-existent or terrible are greatly exaggerated. This is a game that similar to SMT 3: Nocturne, has a more minimal “show not tell” approach to story telling and instead focuses on alignments and opens some grand philosophical discussion with depth that a lot of RPG stories are lacking in my opinion. I have preferred how the Shin Megami Tensei series doesn’t try to force character interactions down your throat at every turn and doesn’t rely as much on tropes as other titles in the JRPG genre. All of this said, I have preferred the story of other entries in the mainline series, my favorite being Strange Journey. The gameplay is top notch though and has made this a thoroughly enjoyable experience for me personally and graphically this game is one of the most impressive I’ve seen yet on the Nintendo Switch, and the frame rate has been fairly stable for me playing in handheld mode. I highly recommend this game to anyone who has loved the JRPG genre, but is maybe tired with some of the tropes and gimmicks that more recent entries in popular series have put out lately. When I discovered this series it was a breath of fresh air for me, and that’s still just as true to this day with Shin Megami Tensei V. Expand

The game is perfect in all ways. SMT V is everything I wanted - smart tough turn based battles, great locations that inspire exploration, nice soundtrack, lots of mythological creatures and awesome demons design.
The only reason I can not give it a 10 is first day DLC with extra demons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Shin Megami Tensei V is an excellent game, as usual from ATLUS. The new style of gameplay, separate from the series' standard of dungeons, is refreshing and brings something new to the table. I also do enjoy the numerous interactions with demons, the gameplay features, and new animations that occur. The music is also stellar as usual, feeling just as great as Shin Megami Tensei IV's soundtrack. However, I do have one or two problems with the game. Firstly, the story's mostly what one would expect. Unlike something like IV Apocalypse or Nocturne, there's no real change to the setup of the Law/Chaos dynamic. Neutral is the unambiguous best option again. There's nothing similar to Reasons too, and those were a unique change of pace that made Nocturne feel more unique from the previous games. Meanwhile, while a few characters like Dazai do have character development, many others are as flat as they were at the start such as Yuzuru, or do nothing like Miyazu. I do like the more nuanced take of the Law/Chaos dynamic where both sides have legitimate points instead of being bloodthirsty angels/demons though. All in all, great game. Expand

If you're comparing this to Persona 5, stop. This is a different series. Rating poorly because it's not another game is honestly just immature.

The Switch is perfect for this game so I can carry it around but I hope it comes to other platforms too. This game is seriously so evolved from where it came from. Compare it to Nocturne or SMT 4 on the 3DS and see what this series is about

A perfect JRPG sadly held back by hardware limitations. I shouldn't be fantasizing about how much better this game will be on next gen instead of getting immersed in the actual game, but that has unfortunately been my experience. Trying to rate the game instead of the platform it's being run on is like trying to enjoy driving a lamborghini in a elementary school parking lot .

Although almost everyone things the plot is insignificant, I think few game nowadays touches the subject of ideas and world creation anymore, and this subject touches me.
Some maps are painful when you are near the objective but it's on the cliff.
Hope to see another Shin Megami Tensei VI or a 5f in the following years.

Probably the single most important thing to say in regards to SMT V is that it is not a game for everyone. If you are looking for a game with a colorful cast or do not enjoy slower or methodical games, do not pick this game up, you will not enjoy it. However, if you are alright with that being the case, then SMT V is by far one of the most satisfying games that I have played in a long time.

The game's open world works to make it truly feel like you are fighting tooth and nail for every inch of ground you make, slowly fighting your way through the horde of demons that lays in front of you. Backtracking for things like farming vending machines for money is quick and mostly painless and gives you a real sense of power as you can effortless stomp any enemy who before you were wary of. Exploration is also quite enjoyable as there is so many collectables or items to find that even while backtracking you will occasionally run into a Miman you missed.

Gameplay is rock solid and sticks to a formula that has remained solid for years. Aliments and Buffs/Debuffs remain as viable as always unlike many other JRPG franchises, even with the shift to "Persona buffs" with single target buffs in the early game and a set time limit to buffs that needs to be refreshed every few turns. Combat can certainly get a bit repetitive, but you level up and get access to new demons at a consistent rate to where your party is often a revolving door of new demons coming and old reliable leaving as their viability runs thin, so there is always some new spice being added to gameplay. Boss fights are difficult and require proper planning to defeat on higher difficult, which in turn makes the extremely memorable.

Probably my biggest gripes are accuracy and how even when striking an enemy on the overworld to initiate combat, they can still gain the first turn. Flying enemies in particular can be a real pain in the ass in the regard. Accuracy feels a bit too low without the use of buffs/debuffs. Bosses are mostly fine in this regard since you will be using buffs and debuffs in those fights and most early game bosses lack additional mob enemies, but it really hurts in random encounter with multiple enemies where Sukukaja and Sukunda are far less impactful and the lost of 2 press turns can be devastating. This is only a major issue in the first few areas of the game until you get access to AOE accuracy buffs like Cautious Cheer and Masukukaja, but reducing the cost of a miss to 1.5 Press Turns or giving the player access to Masukukaja or Masukunda a bit earlier would be a very welcome change in my books

Overall, this is an incredible game and a worthy entry into the franchise.

What a journey! After eight years of waiting, the fifth installment of MegaTen is finally here, and it manages to deliver a satisfying experience. It may not have the deepest plot or most interesting cast of human characters, but it's fun, and I appreciate that it challenged me to think more about myself, my beliefs and how I view the world around me. And how many games can do that? [Issue #57 – January/February 2022, p. 76]

SMTV brought everything I expected from a new chapter in the series of one of the first RPG games made, always renewing and innovating. We have an adventure that will make you stay for more than 40 hours hoping it doesn't end. It's really a great must-have for SMT fans and highly recommended for any RPG fan.

Comparing with an adored Persona cannot be avoided, but it is still a quite different experience for a different audience. Great fights, growing demons, excelent graphics and atmosphere. This JRPG succeeded.
